Take a rousing romp through 1790s England with this third book in the Properly Spanked series…
The Earl of Augustine has always thought of Lady Minette as a sister, but when a nocturnal adventure goes horribly awry, he’s forced to make her his bride.
Now his friend Warren is furious with him, the jilted Lady Priscilla is spreading ugly gossip, his father’s illness is worsening, and Minette is…well…being Minette. Flighty, exuberant, and utterly irascible, she wants a true marriage, when all August can see is the impish girl he rescued from scrapes as a child.
But Minette has idolized Lord August for years, as long as she can remember, and she’s determined to make their union a passionate and fulfilling one. She launches caper after caper in an effort to capture his attention and awaken his masculine hungers. Unfortunately, all she seems to accomplish are repeated disciplinary sessions over his lap. Can she make August realize she’s the love of his life in time to save their crumbling marriage—and her smarting backside? Or will he hold her at arm’s length forever, refusing to acknowledge the powerful emotions she stirs in his heart?

I'm impressed! I'm not ashamed to admit that I was only expecting to read a naughty book, but August and Minette blew me away. Great characterization and chemistry, emotionally charged interactions - not only between August and Minette, but also between August and her brother Warren - and very good writing. Definitely the best book in the series so far. If it keeps going like this, the next book will be fantastic. Can't wait!
Spoiler Ahead This is book 3 in the "Properly Spanked Series" I read this book in one sitting. I have been waiting to read Minette's book she is a chatter box. Minette who is Lord Warrens little sister and she has been in love with Lord August since she was a little girl but he only sees her as a little sister. Lord August is under pressure to marry Lady Priscilla he is also dealing with a sick father so when Lord and Lady Townsend have a party everyone is there and he knows that before the week is over he has to ask to wed Lady Priscilla. While sleep walking Minette ends up in Lord August bed although he thinks it's the maid as it is dark in the room and they share a night of passion until morning comes and he sees what he has done and when his friends come into his room and see Minette Lord Warren wants to kill him so he agrees to marry her let the games begin. This was a really good book Minette only wanted to be a good wife to Lord August but he only saw her as a sister and would not consummate the marriage and he leaves her in the country and returns to London and two weeks later Minette follows and he spanks her with the paddle that Warren gave him as a wedding present. Minette gets in to all kinds trouble including going to visit Lord August lover Esme. For 75% of this book I wanted to slap Lord August he was so mean to Minette when all she wanted was to be treated like his wife she put up with a lot his mother hated her and the household staff treated her bad also but she continued to fight. Lord August started opening up to her about his past with his father who he hated. When the damn breaks we find out that Lord August has darker urges than Lord Warren and Lord Townsend he likes breath play while having sex. This book also had some funny moments in it also. The book was well written like the rest of the books in this series with no errors in grammar or spelling. I am looking forward to reading the next book about Lord Arlington and his bride that he was ordered to take by the king.
Depressing until about 90% through. The spanking was decidedly unsexy and abusive, the heroines “antics” were her misguided attempts to please her husband because he was a totally uncommunicative asshole, and her desperation for him went from romantic to downright pathetic by the end. I wanted her to stand up for herself FOR REAL but she would back down after any stand because the hero physically intimidated her and abused her. It was depressing and made me sad for her.
Annabel Joseph is famous for writing broody, emotional Alpha males. The kind of guys that draw you to her books. The kind of guys that make you fight with your girlfriends over who REALLY has ownership of them. The kind of guys you just really fall in love with…whether it be on page one or during the epilogue, you walk away loving them. So when I picked up My Naughty Minette, I was totally prepared to fall for August in the way that I have fallen for every other male Annabel has written about, but something happened. I am not saying that I didn’t love August, because I did, but Minette….Minette was the show stealer in the book. She leapt into my heart and I can still feel her there 2 weeks after reading this wonderful story.
“She lives for you, and you very well know it. You’re the sun in her sky, the only flower in her meadow. You always have been….”
If you have been keeping up with Annabel’s Properly Spanked series, you have already been introduced to Minette and August. She is the younger sister of Warren and has had a crush on August her entire life. You totally sense her young love for him….it is written on the pages, and you can feel it in your heart. This girl is utterly devoted to August and the fact he will marry another is soul crushing to her. When an unforeseen situation arises, that I absolutely thought was brilliant on Minette’s part, and August has to wed her because that is just how reputations are upheld back in the day, the story takes a huge turn.
Because sometimes you could be standing a foot away from a person and feel like there were acres between you to be crossed.
Of all of Annabel’s books I have read (and I have read all but 2) I felt the most emotionally invested with Minette. Maybe it is the fact that as a woman I have loved and didn’t feel it reciprocated and no matter what I did, it wasn’t enough. And that is the heartache that Minette struggles with through most of this book...so maybe she is my kindred spirit….I don’t know, but her plight was something I think anyone who has ever loved will relate to in some degree. But don’t count her devotion to August out. The strength of the heart always wins. Always. Her innocence and oblivious nature truly made me smile and I laughed out loud many times when she chose to run from her punishments!
“My bottom’s on fire.” She reached to rub it but he make a quelling sound. “Leave your hands where they are.” “I’m trying,” she said. “But you’re hurting me very much. I wish you would touch me and stroke me instead.”
Now as for August….man he took a bit to win me over for the shear fact he was hurting my Minette, but when secrets come out as to why he is keeping her at arm’s length, my heart shattered and I just fell head over heels in love with him. August of course is sexy as all get out and he can bring the bedroom moves as well as a heavy handed spanking. There is no lacking with his sexual prowess or his sexual experience and August teaching Minette his likings was extremely hot!
“I love you,” he whispered. “Even when I’m naughty?” “Especially when you’re naughty,” he said.
I can’t say enough about how much I loved this book! As always, the editing was perfect and tight and the cover could be one of my favorites of Annabel's. This series keeps getting better and better and to see what is up with the rest of the players from books one and two was such a treat. I encourage you to jump into My Naughty Minette and fall in love with this wonderful young girl and the boy who stole her heart at age 7. You won’t be disappointed. 5 W.A.R. stars Annabel. This book ran the gamut of my emotions and it was pure AJ brilliance!
Wow! This book took a sharp right - or left - from the previous book in the series, To Tame a Countess, which was rather lighthearted in tone. This one had me weeping at one point, which was totally unexpected. Minette is still the adorable, always upbeat, and chatty young woman introduced in the previous books, but August is taciturn in the extreme. My heart broke for these two and, although I wanted to smack August upside the head for being so stupidly stubborn, I could understand the no-win situation his feelings towards Minette left them in.
In this story Minette was the strong one, unbelievably strong really considering what August put her through. August was tortured and filled with angst, caught between his brotherly feelings for Minette and his hatred for his dying father. He really was a sad and frustrating character. Annabel Joseph has an amazing touch when it comes to the depth of emotions in her characters.
This book was far less erotic than the others, because there was far less intimacy between our main characters - but that's a main plot point so it fits... even though I really missed the delicious heat the other couples had in their stories.
My absolute favorite in the Properly Spanked series and possibly one of my favorites of all time. The perfect combination of angsty and sexy that makes up an interesting and emotionally satisfying story. I cried and laughed with Minette (because Minette most definitely means shenanigans) and loved all over Lord August (when I wasn't mentally slapping him). Loved. Must read!
So I was browsing through my library's ebook catalog looking for something fluffy and brainless to read because I have no brain right now and I love historical romances where they have to get married at the beginning and then fall in love during the book while they're already married, and this fell under that trope and I read the description and I was all, "...huh?" So I started reading it, and then I kept reading it with the same sort of horror that one watches a train speeding along its tracks and you know it's about to go over the cliff but surely someone's going to stop the train but no. No, they do not stop the train. And you're just left staring at it thinking, "Someone should have stopped that train."
This is a book about spanking adult women because they need to be spanked to learn manners and submit to the man who obviously knows better. Apparently this is book three in a series about men who spank their women into submission. And I'm pretty sure that's abuse. Because physically harming someone when they're begging you to stop doesn't seem romantic.
And seriously, the brother of the heroine (who apparently got married in one of the earlier books) gives the hero a paddle with his sister's new monogram on it for a wedding present.
BECAUSE EW!!!
So no. Please do not read this book. It's a gross train wreck of normalizing abuse as romance and it's icky and gross and I should have stopped after just reading the description but I thought it couldn't possibly be that but it was.
It really was.
And now I'm going to go scrub my brain with bleach.
If you have been reading the Properly Spanked series in order, My Naughty Minette is a U-turn of sorts. With a title like My Naughty Minette, I was excited. Minette is not like the other heroines. She is happy. She is herself and society accepts that. What could August possibly discipline her for except for exciting hijinks??
So, that was not the story that I was to read.
This is a very sombre story with little spice. Minette has been in love with her brother's friend, August, since she first laid eyes on him. After a night of sleepwalking adventures, she is married off to August. But unfortunately for Minette, August can't seem to accept her as his wife. He is the brooding type (he writes piano music), so there's that to it, but he also wants Minette to "stay innocent and pure, because she was the only innocent, pure thing that had ever existed in his life." It's not so much that he sees her like a kid sister so much as he is scared of losing the naive devotion Minette has of him if he engages with her in a husband-wife dynamic. Not to mention, his father is on his deathbed, and his friendship with Minette's brother, August, is understandably tense and awkward. Minette, surprisingly, is mature and does not do anything to get his attention other than ask him to her bed. A shorter story compared to the rest of the series, this could have been developed further but it's a good read. Minette should have disciplined August with the ginger IMO.
4.5, really......I really enjoyed this book, the characters were developed beautifully and it was lovely to see Minette for the achingly honest and loving woman she was - one who eventually allowed August to shed MOST of his darkness and allow himself to see the treasure right in front of him. The relationships between all 4 men/3 women received time here, deepening the connections which were more superficial in previous books. So why not 5 stars? I generally enjoy more sex with my spankings, so I've docked one half of a star to be 4.5. I love this series! Though I can't wait to see Arlingron's story, I'll be sad to see it end.
Wanted to like it more. This book is repetitive with its hero's indecision, which is dragged out for most of the book. I like the heroine being spunky and talkative. It was too drawn out and the hero's change of mind happens like a switch. Not compelling enough overall. Where was the villain? Where was the story? Conflict? All lacking here.
August is in bed dreading his up coming engagement to Priscilla who he is expected to ask to marry him by his mother and her mother, when Minette who is sleep walking gets into his bed. He thinks that she is one of the maid servants and that she was sent to him by his friend as today is his birthday. So August proceeds to have sex with Minette, as Minette doesn't leave even though she wakes up after a while. The next morning they are discovered by Minette's brother Warren and August's other friend as well. So there is a Wedding in a week. After the wedding August and his new wife go to his parent's house and Minette refuses to cooperate and go to bed alone, because August is thinking he is not going to have s x with again ever, so he is trying to send her to bed. So the next thing August does is use a paddle Warren gave him and gives his wife a spanking. August's father is dying of "the French Pox" and is in the last stages in which the victim goes mad and has convulsions and August goes to London and tells Minette that she is to stay in Oxfordshire and instead she follows later in the company of her aunt, so she gets a paddling while bent over his desk in the study. Minette is confused by her husband's behaviour and doesn't understand why he won't have sex with her. So goes and visits her husband's ladybird and asks her for advice and of course when her husband finds out she gets spanked. Then later Minette is with Aurelia and Josephine, the wives of her husband's married friends and they show her some naughty books and try to explain about sex and pleasing one's husband and of course she gets spanked when she gets home after August and his friends walk in on them. However eventually August's father dies and August stops being so determined not to have sex with Minette again and there is a nice HEA.

“Do you know what? You are terribly confused about how to be a husband. You’re not doing anything right." Minette says to August. Ahhh, I love that quote. Another quote I really liked: “I’ve loved you forever,” she shouted, crying through her anger. “But it hurts too much to be the only one in love, so if you won’t love me, then I’m going to leave you, and then you’ll wish that you’d loved me, because no one else will ever love you as much as I do.”
What's different with this book that it starts soon off with a sex scene (earlier than most sex scenes in romances) and then you have to wait forever for another one. I liked how August's birthday was given. He's a Scorpio! And boy, does he fit it well. He's very private and secretive and unwilling to let Minette in for a while. I'm not sure exactly, in the beginning, he didn't desire her because he felt it would be almost incestuous, but then later on, in the story, he does desire her, but resists it because (I don't remember the many reasons why) he doesn't want to ruin her innocence, the only innocent thing left in his life (yet she's not super innocent anymore, after all, he bedded her before marriage). Honestly, it seemed like August would never give in... You can't help but feel bad for Minette, who is a very charming chatterbox and sometimes meddler. Once or twice, I was like Minette shut up, you're just making it worse for yourself! When Minette got angry, sometimes I could hear her voice talking in my head, lol. Also I felt bad for Minette because instead of sex, she got spankings and other punishments.
I liked how we saw the other characters from the previous books in here. Arlington and Hunter (Townsend) were amusing.
Our Lady is labeled as a a naughty child, but I found her truly adorable. She was sweet and caring, kind and thoughtful. She wanted nothing more than to please her spouse and his family. I loved her persistence nature. She has proven that should is a strong female lead that won’t take no for an answer.
Then, there is Lord August . He doesn’t realize what a true delight Minette is. He still sees her as a child instead of the beautiful woman she has become. While I do believe he found his feelings for her challenging in the beginning, I wish he would have broken down his barrier long before he did.
Thank goodness Minette was able to deal with this brooding male. I think I may have kicked him to the curb.
I was also thrilled Warren in the book. He is such a wonderful brother. The one thing he desperately wants is his sister’s happiness. He won’t stop until he can ensure that August will make this happen.
While I enjoyed the book I was getting frustrated with August. I know this union wasn’t his first choice, but like Warren, I only wish for Minette’s happiness.
I think this was my favorite of the Properly Spanked series. I enjoyed the relationship between August and Minette and thought they were good for each other. I thought their personalities balanced well with the other. There was a lot of angst, but it was well written angst. August continuously broke my heart (and Minette's). But I was well satisfied with the whole story and definitely recommend it!
I found this story differed from the first two quite a bit. The hero struggles with his feelings for his wife when he has helped his best friend raise her from a young girl. Seeing her as a woman instead of a little sister takes up a good portion of the book. Minette does find herself spanked on numerous occasions before the resolution of his feelings takes place. I'm looking forward to reading the 4th book in this series!
I really love Minette as the heroine from the series. She's different from other noble lady. She pinned for a man who treat her like a sister. Minette is my fave.
But... I didn't like Augustine. Just no. I couldn't find his appeal. Such a disappointment.
Oh heavens, this was a satisfying love story! Minette is an utterly charming character, and the way that she and August began their relationship was one of the most fun parts of the book. There was not, however, as much sexual content as I'd come to expect from Annabel Joseph--as one of the major plot points was the lack of sex in August and Minette's marriage. August's Madonna/whore complex wore on me a bit after a while, but I thought the way everything resolved itself was really lovely and satisfying. I only wish that, after such a long time of August worrying that his desires were too dark and depraved to inflict upon Minette, that when the sex finally happened that it had lived up to that depravity. Instead it was relatively tame for an Annabel Joseph book. Still, I did enjoy the story a lot, and I'm looking forward to reading Arlington's book with high hopes that he brings the depravity back.
When an author deviates from the plot of a series to such an extent, it ruins the entire experience and the journey for the reader and now I'm doubtful that I will continue with these stories. I was so looking forward to reading about August ,and Minette but he is seemingly disgusted by his feelings for her for about 80% of the Book! So much so, that I couldn't wait for the story to end. It was a shame because he had a long time love for her but there was no passion in their relationship even when they finally came together in like the last 2 chapters! It was poorly done and NOT AT ALL like the sensual and erotic reads in the previous books. I could go on and on about everything that was wrong and disappointing with this story, but I've wasted enough time and energy in trying to get through this book already. What a mistake!
This story was significantly less 'naughty' than other books in the series and that is a good thing as it shows the author's versatility within the genre (I understand she writes a lot of contemporary stuff). Relative to other novels in the genre this deserved perhaps 1.5 stars from me. The prose was fine but we also went through a lot of tropes here that weren't employed in a clever way.
It was a stark contrast to the previous book "To tame a Countess", much more concerned with how to make the marriage work and August coming to terms with his father dying. I appreciated Warren telling his brother-in-law that he didn't want to see his sister's spirit broken.
I suppose it was the asphyxiation part why the other three friends thought August more depraved than them. It's not for me but I also didn't see the difference to the other men's proclivities.
The part at the beginning, where Minette discovers the blood – it reminded me of that part in Plath's "The Bell Jar"... but here it didn't really serve a purpose.
Generally, it's a short enough read. It needs saying though that the tone is rather different from the other novels in the series. I didn't mind that at all but others might.
This one is my favorite in the series so far. I love a brooding Hero and a sweet as pie heroine. This one had the least smut and maybe the most angst because the H denied his feelings for her for so long, but it was still so good. My only disappointment was the H being scared the whole book to unleash his “perverse” sexual desires so I was expecting some crazy stuff, but he literally only choked her for like 5 seconds.
With the way the H was musically gifted, their characters kind of reminded me of Pretty Woman (the movie) a little. Vivienne and Minette were both cheerful chatterboxes that help their brooding Heroes enjoy life and open their hearts to love.
3.5 stars. I finished this in almost one day and I really enjoyed myself. I rarely read friends to lovers in historical romances so this was a cute start. Towards the end she was a little annoying, I wanted her to find a passion and not be so reliant on August for a reason to live. I understand it in the grand scheme of things but I just felt like she was punished for every little thing she did but he wasn’t even reprimanded for his faults which I didn’t like. Overall was a cute story, I recommend if you want to read a quick story without much thought.
Liked purely for the vibes, and if ranked based on that alone it would have scored higher. Sadly, this book was better at the not being a proper couple thing, especially with August’s abrupt switch to love and Minette never truly being a fleshed out character apart from being a love-driven airhead with wit more of a topic for conversation rather than an actual trait. Despite the fact that I enjoyed Minette as a lovable fool and August as a fool in love, there really was not much to their characters and their relationship but the promise of what their story should have been.
Aww this story was so sweet, so tender. I thought I could predict how August and Minette’s story would be but it wasn’t at all as I had imagined! . So far this has been my favourite of the series. Something about both Minette and August seemed so very realistic. Their personalities, behaviour and outlooks didn’t seem forced. . This book felt much more emotional, less spicy and more feeling and growth. I really enjoyed it!
She’s childish and feather-brained, he’s self-loathing and closed off. Not the most fun couple. I spent much of the first half wishing to wring her neck just to shut her up, and his to make him speak. The worst of it is that there is no sex for a good portion of the book. It came around in the end but falls short of its predecessors in the series.
Of this series, this is my least fave and I love them all I understand not letting go of his childhood feelings for her he was just not ready to make the transition to lover
