I'm really liking Meg's chapters. I'm kinda bummed that our main characters aren't in it that much anymore but honestly they haven't been offering anything interesting lately. But seeing Meg struggling with her modeling career is definitely intriguing. Can't wait to see how it pans out

“No matter how we struggle we can’t let go of the anxiety we still hold on to. All we can do is move forward. We can’t stay the way we are.”

Megumi is front and center in this volume. She’s in Paris determined to not go home without a modeling contract. Even tho she’s got a terrible personality and is awfully to everyone, I’m interested to see if she can get what she wants.

I get that Megumi is a character that the author really loves and you can tell that’s where her inspiration is at this point in the series, but it really is becoming an uneven focus at this point as far as A plots and B plots go. So, the my enjoyment of the volume heavily now just depends on who gets to be the main focus of it!

If you'd told me I would enjoy a volume with a focus on Megumi before, would have laughed in your face. But Hazuki reminds us that she's human underneath that unpleasantness, and the racism she faces in France feels very real - as does her shock at her lack of marketability outside of Japan.

Unrelatedly, I am starting to have some vague doubts about the plausibility of Mei and Yamato as a couple in the long run...I hope I'm wrong, but I also wouldn't fault Hazuki if they don't end up together forever. She seems more invested in reality than most romances.

I'm actually preferring Meg over the main characters right now. Their story and career paths are just kind of boring. Childcare, really, I've already read that manga before. It's too old hat. Now if she went into psychology that could be interesting and I just don't find Yamato as a photographer believable. There just wasn't enough career foundation for them in these volumes. Heck, it would make more sense for her to become a vet with their love of cats. I don't know. I just feel let down by the main characters.

Suki-Tte Ii Na Yo a.k.a Say I Love You

A light read filled with positive messages.

(The rating and review are conclusion for all of the volumes excluding the synopsis. Beware of spoiler.)

《 Plot 》
The pace of the story is good. Although there are 18 volumes all over, it doesn’t make you lose interest in it. The story starts by introducing Mei who's a bully victim. She doesn’t have any friends because she always distances herself from people. This is because she has been betrayed by her friends back in the middle school. Ever since then, she never trusts people anymore. However, she begins to change when she gets to know Yamato. Yamato is a popular guy that has many friends and is wayyy too friendly with girls. He starts to approach Mei when she kicked him because of some misunderstanding that happened. Yamato pursues Mei every day which eventually leads them being together. The story starts to develop from there and it’s being told from Mei’s POV.

《 Characters 》
Mei Tachibana, the heroine
When Mei starts falling in love with Yamato, she feels scared of showing everything to him. I can relate to that a lot because you don't know how things will be so it's scary. There are other moments that I can relate to but I won't tell you to avoid spoiler.

At one point, Mei begins to change herself by engaging more with people around her. That's what makes her strong and kind girl. She is very observant of people around her and tries to help them the best she can. I love her character development.

Yamato Kurosawa, the hero
Yamato is a typical cool who is popular for his kindness. Despite being a cool popular guy, he still has his own flaws. There are some issues that he struggles with but didn't let people see him in that way. I wouldn't really picture him as a really good guy. He has his flaw but he learns to change little by little.

《 Pros & Cons 》
Realistic & healthy relationship
↳ There are several couples born in this comic and each of them shows what relationship is likely to be in real life especially Mei’s relationship. If you have been in a relationship, several situations that happened will make you go “Omg, I went through that too!”. On top of that, most of them are in a healthy relationship making it enjoyable to read.

Positive messages
↳ It touches the issue of bully and friendship. Although Mei has been bullied, she doesn’t retaliate at those who had betrayed her back then. It also shows that life is more wonderful with loyal companions being by your side.

The art drawn
↳ It’s not that the art are bad or anything. It’s just not really my cup of tea. I noticed that the art was changing slightly as the volume continues on. It got better in my opinion.

《 Extras 》
My favourite manga! I keep going back to this whenever I feel like reading something light and fun. This is my first manga that I read when I first started to read comic. I was so happy when I found out this comic had completed in English version. These are several quotes that I love from this story.
“Nothing makes a girlfriend more insecure than a boyfriend who's kind to everyone.”
“No matter how beautiful you are, when you're dating someone, all of your flaws come out.”
“If you want to move forward, sometimes, you can't keep doing things the way you've always done them. That peace of mind ruins you and hurts people.”
“You can get stronger by loving others and letting them love you.”

⚝ Who should read? ⚝
❥ Enjoy high school story.
❥ Love friendship theme story.
❥ Can tolerate typical “famous guy” falls for “unpopular girl”.

So our characters are steadily moving toward adulthood, and this is their summer break from school.

Most of this volume is modeling. Mei models hair styles, and Meg tries desperately to get a contract in France. That's pretty much it.

I really liked Meg's story. Getting the contract is not easy. In fact, it couldn't be harder because, and I'm not joking, the Parisian agencies are racist jerks. One even says, and I quote, "We don't need yellows." I liked that it wasn't easy and that she had to work her ass off for it. While "Say I Love You" doesn't have a track record of handing main characters everything on a silver platter through plot convenience, a lot of manga series do. I was afraid that the photographer she met at the airport would actually be a modeling agency's scout, and that she would spend all her France trip modeling and not looking for work. In the end , but not before she was driving herself to desperation.

As I said, there was some Mei stuff early on, but it was more of an aside compared to the rest of the Meg-focus in this volume. There was also some Rin and Kai story stuff that resolved early in the volume, but again, it felt more like an interlude to Meg getting it together.

Although I wanted to read more about Mei and Yamato's future plans, this volume was more focused on Megumi. While I wouldn't say she's one of my favorite characters, I do like how she is a strong and determined individual who is willing to do what she can for her dream. I like how the author brings attention to how each passing day leads each of the characters closer to their futures.

Side note: I really wanted to start reading manga again, but I wasn't sure what series to start with. By now, I've forgotten most of what happened in the manga I was reading--but I didn't want to start from the beginning for ALL of the series I was reading. So I thought it would likely be the best to start from continue reading a series I really, really like. Say I Love You is a series that's really close to my heart--I have a fondness and kind of nostalgia towards it, so I think this is the perfect series for me as of now~

3.5 rounded down. While Megumi's modeling was neat to see Rin and Takemura are so-so and the modeling guy's potential romance was super creepy. Everyone's past knowing their goal and is now slowly trying to achieve it. The salon photo shoot was cute and got Hazuki to draw some fun outfits as well as have some sweet moments of just Mei and Yamato.
Takemura and Rin are happening more and I'm still just eh about it. Kai struggling to see what makes him “worthy” to Rin is an interesting idea but much hasn't been done with it yet than acknowledging it's existence.
Megumi tries to make it big in France. While Kazuki had tackled some of the issues in the world of modeling, we do get to see its more pickier and demoralizing side as Megumi struggles and finds she needs to start smaller and make herself a “niche” to get into a smaller gig than straight into prime time Fashion Week. I thought it was great and really interesting. There is a major ick though. The freelance photographer tries to date Megumi which is just super gross. I can't tell if it'll be a plotline where it's romanticized or called out for the clear creepiness of it and I do not want to be not able to tell.

I enjoyed reading/having the focus be on Megumi. Her character are is quite interesting, given there are reasons not to love her given her history.

That said, I liked the adventure she was embarking in the pursuit of her career and the closed doors one encounters when going after the thing which they love. Each 'no' is a test and looking back, there can be some fun in looking at those times. Especially as she tries her luck in France.

Reading this made me think of times where I just went on a limb and did something. Also a reminder you can create your own adventure, lean into the unknown at any time, to move outside your own comfort zone to encourage growth.

It was interesting getting to see Megumi struggle in Paris and the industry. I wasnt expecting the story to show her deal with racism but I like that it didnt sugarcoat it. I dont like the photographer guy. I dont trust him and if they make a romance happen between him (30 year old grown man) and Megumi (an 18 year old high school student), I'm going to be so disappointed. I would truly rather see a love triangle between her, Kai, and Rin instead, if I have to choose.

Also, I'm not sure if Kai likes Rin, and obviously he doesnt know rn either, but I'm a little nervous about how their storyline is gonna go.

I was getting a little bored while reading this and I may have just started reading a new series because of the lull in this one sjshsh

HOWEVER, Megumi’s story really pulled though. I mean Kai and Rin are an interesting add and all but I can’t wait to see where Megumi goes <3 especially after her development.

Waiting for the moment all the characters blossom and have the ending they deserve ✨

the amount of racism in this chapter is sad, and the fact that most likely it still happens everywhere is even more horrible. i also fucking hope that the 18 yo girl will not start a relationship with the 30 yo photographer tf. anyway i didn’t know i would be so interested in megumi’s chapters, but i was pretty invested anyway

This was a really good volume that is heavily focused on Meg. I didn't know whether I'd like that or not but it really humanized her character a lot, it also gave us a bit of a glimpse on the racism that takes place in france towards asian people.

Man, I really hated Meg in the beginning but now I just want the best for her. I’m worried about this modeling in France idea and this 30 year old photographer asking her out is just… ick!

I gave this volume only 2 stars because it's pretty much all about Megumi and I don't really care about Megumi. If she suddenly disappeared from the series, that would be fine with me.

Megumi es la más chida de esta serie, es mala onda, sí, pero se ve que le cae bien a la autora y por eso le da mejor desarrollo.
