Another winner by Diane Marina!

Despite loving her writing in After The Glitter Fades I was a little apprehensive about reading this. This books deals with a certain subject matter that I will never enjoy reading about but the author really, and I mean really did an amazing job telling the story of Beth & Toni.

The narrative is solely from Beth's perspective and while I was curious about Toni's thoughts on everything that happened, I wasn't too disappointed because this is one of those books where the characters actually communicate... eventually. Because of course there were moments when they didn't talk at all and yes their timing wasn't always perfect. Despite all of that they still managed to lay all their cards on the table in the end.

And the best part about everything? Not one single moment did it feel like anything that happened in this book was fake. The characters felt real, their anger, pain and lack of trust were all completely valid. This is by no means a light read but so worth it because of that.

The only thing I didn't like personally was the ending. I am nowhere near as forgiving as Toni and would not have made the same choice as her. Then again if I was Toni this book would be labeled as a thriller and not romance.

Full 4* for this heart breaker!

“How Still My Love: A Contemporary Romance” provides an emotional roller coaster, and it’s a particularly enjoyable ride because of the terrific narration by Daniela Acitelli.

MC Beth is still hurting years after her last relationship failed, she has a long-term secret crush on her married BFF Laurel, and she’s 100% dedicated to work. Beth scratches her occasional itch with one-night stands, but has no plans to ever again be in a relationship that would expose her to another heartbreak.

With the help of Beth’s coworkers, Laurel finally arm-twists Beth into a blind date with her friend Toni. “I found a lesbian for you!”, she exclaims!

Author Diane Marina provides the narrator with some hilarious material as Beth, running late and out of gas, tries getting to the restaurant, and Acitelli really runs with it! Seeing MC Toni for the first time, Beth is stunned, and the feeling is mutual. At their first date, Toni says she’d like to have children of her own one day, and after her last partner was unfaithful, she won’t go into another relationship unless that woman is “all in”.

Well, insta-attraction moves quickly to insta-love, and three days later Beth realizes she loves Toni. Life together is sweet and fun, and listening to their relationship advance and mature is delightful.

And then…three years later, Toni is ready for a child, but Beth has concerns…that she keeps to herself. At this point, we’re at the halfway point of the book, and the sweet and funny “ride through the countryside” feeling shifts dramatically. I don’t want to give away spoilers, but I do want to share some observations.

Throughout the book, Beth describes Toni as visually stunning, and frequently reminds us that she (Beth) drives a Jaguar, and is very successful in her career. She’s attracted to physical things, and enjoys Toni physically. Toni frequently mentions her love of family, her love of (and desire for) children, her joy at working in a school, and she is the one who initiates communication between the partners. Two different people. Attracted to each other, and in love with each other, but there are clear differences.

Well, those differences, combined with a growing lack of honest communication about bringing a new life into their partnership finally boils over. The blurb uses the word “heartbreaking”, and that’s the right word for many ensuing chapters. The title of the book includes “Contemporary Romance”, and that phrase too is appropriate. This is not artificial angst brought in Melissa Brayden style; this is such a damned realistic portrayal of how two women in love can tear themselves and their relationship apart by not being honest with each other about fears and concerns. I really have to find as angst-free a book as I can for my next audiobook!

Once things go terribly wrong, and betrayal, anger and mistrust replace doubt and fear…can love survive?

I strongly encourage you to listen to “How Still My Love: A Contemporary Romance” to find out. Toni provides a particularly honest evaluation of their relationship at the end of the book that really provides some wonderful relationship advice for any person, lesbian or not. 4.5* with an extra 1/2 * for the terrific narration; strongly recommended!

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

My rating and my review was not in anyway affected by my having been provided a review copy.

Wow. BIG FAT FEELINGS. While this story is not new, Ms. Marina certainly wrote it well, full of a roller coaster of emotions. This is counted as one of my rare late-nighters (I goddamned love my sleep).

Beth and Toni. Four letters. Already a perfect match. I really, really liked these two together. It is told from Beth's POV only, but I really liked being on their journey from first date to their turmoils and troubles. I really had a hard time with best friend Laurel at the beginning...maybe it's because I attempted the audio version first and found her whiny and meddling and just ..... too much drama. But she appeared to mellow and when I swtiched to the book copy, her personality was more tolerable.

These two had a true, deep connection but they also had failings. I had conflicting feelings for both of them with their mistakes, and I love it when I am challenged as a reader! At one point I thought Toni way overreacted and was more "team Beth." Then I saw more of Beth's failings and switched teams. Back and forth, happy, angry, sad, yet their story was totally believable for any couple. The huge trope of non-communication rears its ugly head, but this time for plausible reasons. To be a parent or not is a biggie and super complex, and could for sure be a deal-breaker.

I was taken back to how my own conversation about kids/no kids happened with my spouse.
SCENE: At a party about 3 years being with my girl, and the upteenth person came up to me asking if we were going to have kids. I was tired of it, and realized we actually had never addressed it.

Me: (yells across room): BABE!
Babe: Yeah?
Me: Do you want kids?
Babe: (long, wide-eyed stare) Uh........no.
Me: Good, me either. (turns to fairweather friend): Nope.

I didn't much care for the ending of this book however, especially . That's the reason I dropped a half star to 4.5/5. Otherwise, holy shit. Well done, Ms. Marina. Can't wait to read more.

This was my second read by Ms.Marina, I enjoyed this book too, especially the first half. Some might say that it was kinda insta but Beth and Toni's relationship was written beautifully with loads of bookmarking scenes.
A special shout out to Laurel and Will. The things this beautiful couple did to the h/h were beyond friendship despite having their plates full on their own too. Available on KU and if you're interested to purchase, it's USD5.

I read After The Glitter Fades first so I already kinda knew where this was going, and I really enjoyed the way the author went about it. I found myself at times feeling really sorry for Beth and her inability to deal with her insecurity even though there was so much love between her and Toni. I liked the way both characters evolve, the journey they go through, and the secondary cast is good too. This is a story of love and growth, definitely not a light read but don’t let that stop you, it’s worth the effort.

This is a story that tells us what happened next after the dust has settled (so to speak). It’s a story of Beth & Toni who found each other and what come next after the initial thrill of finding each other. Their ups and downs, commitment and love with each other. Of course it’s a HEA at the end of it all but it’s the journey which both Beth & Toni took which makes this an interesting (an emotionally) read for me.

Enjoyed the characters. The story was good, but without giving anything away, I had issues with some of the events that take place. That is why it only gets 3 stars from me.

Sweet and Sorrowful and Seriously Good!
Beth has been single for more years than she cares to remember. Her best friend Laurel decides its past time she got on with her love life and pretty much demands she go on a blind date. She’s not thrilled but she agrees. Toni works with Laurel and wasn’t excited about going on a date with her best friend but after seeing Beth’s picture she’s all in! They click right off and love is soon in the air. Both women have issues and desires and for a while all is good until they stop communicating. Things go from bad to worse…is there any hope for these lovely women? Both Beth and Toni are strong and loving and sweet and wonderful, especially together. That part will make you so blissfully happy to read but I for one cried actual tears when things seemed hopeless and they were going through such hard times. I wanted so much for them to get themselves sorted and get back together but things just seem too difficult to recover from. This book is so full of lots of emotions you WILL get invested! Luckily Ms Marina is a sweetheart and a HEA is in order but how it gets there is so worth reading!! I think you will enjoy this book every bit as much as I did!!

It was very difficult to take a break while reading this well written romance. The author, Diane Marina, does a wonderful job in drawing the reader in to the sometimes difficult and often intense relationship between Beth and Toni. Character development was excellent. Quite an emotional ride and I must admit that some tears were shed. Did not want the story to end:) This is a must read!

Amazing book!
I loved the story and the characters.
It's impressive to see how Diane Marina can still be funny in the most dramatic moment.

Ok, the thing is I don’t like to read about cheating, I just don’t like it, specially in committed relationships, and that’s what happens in this book.

I decided to read it because I read other book from this author first and the MCs in this one make an apperance and talk about the cheating and how now they are happy, so my logic was: if I liked the other book, it was funny, romantic, frustraiting in a good way and the characters were likable this was going to be a good book too, even though there was still the infidelity thing.

I liked the humor, the time jumping was necessary, the MCs took bad decisions but that made them more real for me, they were annoying at times, but I liked it, and I’m aware that I’ve disliked some of the same things in other books, but in this one it worked for me. Maybe it’s a 3.75 instead of a 4.

Really good read, goes in depth with the Character development and covers multiple years which is really good implemented. In the middle not very lighthearted but I really liked that it isn´t a typical rainbow and sunshine through the whole book.
Even if this has a little bit of my pet peeve which is simple miscommunication, I really liked it and will look out for more by the author!

Wow!!! This book is absolutely incredible! Laughter, tears, joy...joy... JOY, amidst brutal uncertainty. I could not stop reading this from the moment I started it. So many wonderful and rapturous moments even in the midst of devastatingly painful distances. Can friends, coworkers, family, and children reconstitute and resurrect the love that never completely faded, but hovers on the very brink of extinction for years? There is even the reconnection to a parent that seemed lost to the ethers in the midst of the bleakest despondency. If you can handle crying for joy, blessing the heavens, even while wallowing in the blackest of pits, I totally suggest you read this book. I recommend it wholeheartedly, because life happens on both ends of the spectrum. Indubitably astounding!

Beth has been wangled into a blind date. Well not quite, because she's double dating with her best friend and husband. This best friend is also a good buddy of the blind date. However, it is nearly over before it starts, because Beth is late getting on her way, nearly runs out of gas, and has all sorts of hassles paying for the fuel, arrives almost too late, but then the two women meeting for the first time are simply smitten with each other above and beyond Beth's bizarre late arrival. This romance was like a fairy tale until the unthinkable seems to happen. I just cried really huge tears. How could such perfection go so south because of gross misinterpretation? Heartbreaking!

Toni is a teacher, just like Beth's friend. Toni is also Beth's good friend's friend. Toni has a loving family and she is loving. However, like Beth, she has had some complicated earlier relationships and that makes her more susceptible to bruising and pain. Nevertheless, it is a miscommunication and a misinterpretation that really shakes the seemingly unbreakable foundations to crumbling mush. Feelings sometimes get hurt so profoundly as to blind and undermine the ostensibly unshakable. One of the deal breakers that hovers over things for quite a while is Toni's strong desire to become a mother. It isn't the only crushing blow, but it plays a major influence on sending things south. Devastating!

The curiously evolving reconstruction and resurrection on several fronts rewarded me thrice fold. I bequeath the gold seal for true romance to this fine book. You simply have to read it all, experience it all, and finally celebrate all its wonder. Magnificent!

Tissues. Lots of tissues

Wow, just wow. That was an emotional roller coaster that I could not put down. I read it in one sitting, which doesn’t happen very often. Although, I’m not sure if it’s one I’d be able to read again, considering I was in tears for half of it. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, if you can bring out that kind of emotion in me, that’s a solid 5 stars! Frustration mounted between the two mains, just talk to each other!! However, sometimes that’s easier said than done when you are both scared. I don’t want to go into more, for fear I’ll spoil it, but it is clear these two were destined for each other, even with a painful detour.

I wasn't sure what to think with this book, I kind of just expected a typical lesbian romance. But as painful as the middle of the book was to read, I really think it was necessary to get a full scope of the characters and their flaws. It was a story that reflected so many relationships today, and I'm glad i stuck with it to the end. While it is not as lighthearted as most, I think it is a good read. Nice job.

I had a great time with this book. Very surprised from the beginning, I almost gave up, what an error I would have made .... We are immersed in this story and these 2 characters who are great with interesting second roles, and i cry, cry, this book is surprising, and it's good to be transported. I put 5 stars because what is expected of a romance, besides being seduced , immersed in a story that has twists and ends well and, mission accomplished.

Wonderful

These are two women meant to be together. Their love sucked them into a vortex so quickly they had no chance to breath. One day it all came to a screeching halt. Read as they learn to breath again and come back to each other as life had always intended. They are, with each other, who I hope to be some day.

I was completely engrossed in this story and the many interesting issues that can divide couples. I read and hoped, in anticipation to see if a solution and a reconciliation could be found. Beth and Toni met through a mutual friend, Laurel. They fell madly in love and bought a house together. Devoted to each other, their happy future was set until the topic of having children divided them. Toni had grown up secure, in a home with parents who accepted her sexuality, but Beth’s parents had thrown her out, leaving her with many emotionally conflicting feelings on how to deal with sharing her love and feelings on having a family. This storyline is so true of many relationships when partners aren’t on the same page about starting a family.

From the very beginning of the relationship Toni stressed that she could never deal with any degree of betrayal or infidelity. Something happened that blew up the relationship and Toni refused to even hear what Beth had to say.

I thought the author did a great job of presenting the issues of what happens when trust becomes an issue, how people react and relate differently to different situations. There were moments of hope, disappointment, devotion, patience, courage and a love that was questioned and challenged until trust could be found. It took a long time for both women to do some deep soul searching to recognize their own contributions to what happened.
This is a love story that I’ll surely be listening to again.

This is my first Diane Marina's book and I love it. I couldn't stop reading as soon as I began reading the book. At first, I thought the romance between the 2 main characters kind of developed way too early in the beginning chapters but as I continued to read the whole book I realized that many lesbian couples can relate to them, including myself. The love and struggles story between these 2 characters are very well written. This is one of my favorite lesbian romances and I will certainly find time to read it the second time.

The beginning was boring. When they met it went fast chemistry and love wise. When they started talking about having a baby and after that it was a rollercoaster of emotions. I even cried with them. And the end was cute. I loved it that we saw their lives over a couple of years. As a couple and when they broke up and got back together. It is written in a first person view, so you only see it from
Beth’s site. But I could feel Toni too. So 4 stars.
