The flat characters continue, though there's slightly more world building in this volume. Cixi is still extremely sexually harassing, but it's okay, because she's worried when Zanfyst is hurt, right? And Zanfyst and C'ian are now engaged where volume one seemed to indicate dating/courting. (???) With this volume we've got ourselves a villain, who doesn't get much beyond classic villain introduction (he loves to be evil) and then he's gone until next volume.
Will read all eight volumes, but wondering if it's a waste of time. It's all very superficial coupled with so much sexism and harassment it's astonishing. :/
The quest continues, now with a main antagonist — the pirate, Thanos.
Tension increases as the plot begins to take shape. At volume’s close Lanfeust and Thanos are racing for the sword of supreme power, the fate of Troy hanging in the balance.
The art has improved a little, though it was no slouch to begin with.
While Lanfeust makes excellent and consistent use of expository captions, it would read more smoothly with additional narrative summary captions.
The setting, characters, and scenarios continue to surprise and captivate. Plenty of humor as well. All in all, an excellent book.
This was so good, I read it all over my morning coffee, quick read but immensely satisfying. The art is so dynamic, it feels like Joe Mad but a European version of that so like, better and more detailed. The humour is always there, it bounces between quirky like in Asterix and mid-90s-written-for-teen-boys type of juvenile. I wish I would’ve discovered this in my teens! If you can get past the book’s immaturity, there a big epic adventure well worth reading.
