Brilliant conclusion to the first arc. Excellent plotting, humor, and incredible art. Everything is drawn with an effortless clarity and consistency that creates a seamless reading experience. Many of the compositions and angles are difficult to pull off, but pose no problems for Mourier.

There is a great chemistry between the 3 main characters, each of them with a clearly-defined, larger than life personality.

The book opens by checking in with the captive trolls and Fouquatou. The trolls are suffering, forced to endure rain and eat cabbage. And Fouquatou needs ever more trolls for his confluence river project.

Meanwhile the heroes are stuck in the middle of the volcano.

SPOILER

They try to pee their way off, but run out of urine. They manage to latch on to a passing dragon and fly to the volcano’s rim, escaping the lava but landing in a nest full of dragons. After battling the dragons, they subdue one and head back home on its back, controlling it by bashing its head with a club. (A lot of comedy in this volume comes from the simple crudity of troll problem-solving.)

They carry the sacred fire (which they at first forget) on a burning stick, and need to land to replace it when it burns down. During one of these stops, in a humorous riff on the three little pigs, Teutram blows down ALL the houses, including the one made of bricks.

The swamp wizard brews the disenchantment potion and the heroes head for the dig site. They rig a bunch of cat lizards to run through the camp, distributing the fumes. Free from the enchantment, the trolls launch an all-out melee of comic ultra-violence.

They kill the overseer and corner the troll hunters on a bridge. As the trolls work to destroy the supports, Fouquatou shows up with a bunch of sages on political junket that he hopes will garner support for his pet project. They arrive in a jet body suspended between a pair of white dragons with pierced wings, painted in airline colors. (This is a nice concept and great design.)

Hoping to kill everyone, Waha instructs the trolls to create a giant bow using a crane and a Teutram-trimmed timber. They impale one of the dragons and the airship crashes. The trolls slaughter the survivors, except for Fouquatou, Halmsly, and a few others who manage to escape on the other dragon.

The trolls then head home to celebrate. Profy joins Phalompe, since everyone from his village is dead. The end for now.
