Atlantic Wall

During World War II, Adolf Hitler gave the order for a line of defence to be constructed along the coasts of the western front. Ranging from the French-Spanish border to the north of Norway, this Atlantic Wall is a series of bunkers, barricades and coastal batteries. Over the past year, Stephan Vanfleteren photographed this 'wall' of more than 2600 kilometers in his well-known black-and-white style. He planted his tripod on various beaches in Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany, climbed cliff faces in France, sailed between the fjords of Norway and stood in the surf in Denmark to photograph the ruins of the largest military structure of the previous century. Vanfleteren shows with this series of photos his wonder for the untamed architectural beauty of these concrete structures and he shows the power of nature as it slowly reclaims these structures that were once considered impenetrable.

About the author

Stephan Vanfleteren is one of Belgium’s most renowned photographers. Among the general public, he is mainly celebrated for his penetrating black and white portraits of people from all walks of life, from artists and actors, to surfers, fisher- and sportsmen. However, his oeuvre is much more diverse than that. Starting his career as a press photographer, Vanfleteren made captivating photo reports about the events that dominated the news of the 1990s, such as the genocide in Rwanda, the war in Kosovo and the Dutroux affaire in Belgium. Later on, he began to elaborate a variation of themes in extended photo reportages, going from storefront façades to a journey along the mythical Atlantic Wall.

For his most recent work, Vanfleteren withdrew into his studio to focus on his own version of classic themes such as nude portraits and still life photography. In the latter, entitled Nature Morte, he portrayed dead animals (in colour) he found near his home. Where most of his images are very time phased, this series marks an evolution in Vanfleteren’s work towards a more timeless approach and subject matter.

Atlantic Wall, de verdediginglinie langs de kustlijn ten tijde van Wereldoorlog Twee. Een verdediging die zich uitstrekte van het noordelijke punt van Noorwegen tot het zuidelijkste punt van Frankrijk. Een 5283 km lange kustlijn, bezaaid met bunkers.
Stephan Vanfleteren is een Belgische fotograaf die als kenmerken soberheid en karakter fotografie krijgt. Vanfleteren fotografeert ook zeer veel in zwart-wit.
De foto’s in Atlantic Wall dragen ook deze kenmerken. Uitgebracht in zwart-wit en met uitstraling van karakter.
Vanfleteren slaagt erin om de bunkers, loopgraven of zelfs ruïnes weer te geven met oog voor hun structuur. De ruwheid van de stenen of beton komt mooi naar voren op deze foto’s.
De zee wordt weergegeven zoals een spiegel door gebruik te maken van een lange sluitertijd. Dit zorgt er voor dat de aandacht volledig uitgaat naar de bunkers.
De gebruikte contrasten zorgt voor een goeie diepgang in de foto.
De foto’s zijn afgedrukt in groot formaat. Hierdoor kun je zeer gemakkelijk de foto’s van boven tot onder bestuderen.
Conclusie
Vanfleteren toont met dit boek de vergankelijkheid aan van de Atlantic Wall. Ze is alsmaar minder zichtbaar. Door afbraak door de mens of slijtage door het water verdwijnen er nu en dan bunkers.
Het jammere aan dit boek zijn de vele witte, lege, pagina’s. Liever had ik ze gevuld gezien met nog meer foto’s.
Maar het blijft een bijzonder naslagwerk over de Atlantic Wall.
