This is a book about the marvelous city of Vilnius in the eyes of the great poet Tomas Venclova, a Nobel Prize runner-up, about whom Harold Bloom has said, "One believes Mandelstam and Babel might have rejoiced" in his writing. As an essayist, Venclova writes that he has been occupied by Vilnius, his native city, "through whose example one could easily trace all of the complexity and tragedy of ethnic and national relations in Eastern Europe." He has, for a quarter of a century, been one of the lonely representatives of the conscience of Lithuania.

About the author

Tomas Venclova (g. 1937 m. rugsėjo 11 d. Klaipėdoje) – Lietuvos poetas, publicistas, vertėjas, literatūros tyrinėtojas, profesorius.

Gimė ir užaugo rašytojo Antano Venclovos, LSSR himno autoriaus, šeimoje. 1946 m. rudenį Venclovų šeima iš Kauno persikėlė gyventi į Vilnių. Nuo 1947 m. mokėsi Vilniaus 1-oje berniukų gimnazijoje. 1954–1960 m. Vilniaus universiteto Istorijos-Filologijos fakultete studijavo lituanistiką.

1961–1965 m. gyveno Maskvoje, vėliau Leningrade. 1966 m. Vilniaus universitete įsteigė semiotikų būrelį. 1975 m. įstojo į Lietuvos Helsinkio grupę. 1977 m. Česlovo Milošo kvietimu išvyko dėstyti į Berklio universitetą (JAV, Kalifornija). Tais pačiais metais jam buvo atimta sovietinė pilietybė. [1][2]

Gyvendamas JAV, 1977 m. dirbo Berklio, vėliau Ohajo universitete. Nuo 1980 m. dirba Jeilio universitete, kur 1985 m. apsigynė doktoratą, gavo filosofijos daktaro (Ph. D.) laipsnį. Specialybė – rusų ir lenkų literatūros, taip pat yra dėstęs lietuvių kalbą ir literatūrą. Šiuo metu gyvena ir dirba New Havene (JAV).

T. Venclova artimai bičiuliavosi su kita Lietuvos kultūrai svarbia figūra – Česlovu Milošu[3] [4]. T. Venclova yra išvertęs nemažai Nobelio literatūros premijos laureato Č. Milošo poezijos darbų.

Tomo Venclovos eilėraščio poetinė kalba disciplinuota. Poetas laikosi daugelio klasikinės poezijos normų – ritmo, rimo, metro. Pasaulį lyrinis subjektas tarsi stebi iš šalies ir jį komentuoja. Poetas dažnai atsigręžia į pasaulinę literatūros ir kultūros tradiciją. Taip pat poetui rūpima problema – laiko tėkmė, istorija ir jos poveikis žmogui. Jo kūryboje yra ir pilietinių, net politinių eilėraščių, ir meilės lyrikos. Emigracijoje rašytuose eilėraščiuose dažna tremties, kaip išbandymo, atskleidžiančio žmogaus būties esmę, tema.

T. Venclovos eilėraščiai versti į daugelį kalbų (rinkiniai pasirodė angliškai, vokiškai, itališkai, švediškai, rusiškai, lenkiškai, vengriškai, kiniškai ir kitomis kalbomis).

For me as a Belarusian it was particularly interesting to read the Lithuanian's account of things, but not the usual account I am used to hearing from my peers, which is not always historically accurate and tolerant. Venclova acknowledges what is best about Vilnius - its diversity, complexity and the fact that it equally belongs to all the citizens who toiled and died for it, no matter language, religion or, later, nationality. I found myself thinking over some things, which I used to take for granted, from a different perspective. And then all the images of those dear streets and churches, yards and squares that stood so clear in front of my eyes as I was reading... Venclova describes important episodes of the city's history through the stories of its characters, which are so extraordinary, touching and inspirational that I want to learn more about each and every one of them now.

This is a love letter to Vilnius, its architectural beauty, its extraordinary and tragic history. To describe a city without being pedantic or boring or superfluous is not an easy task, but Venclova managed to do it beautifully. What's more, he is not taking part and avoids easy judgements. Vilnius has been disputed between Poles, Lithuanians, and Belorusians, and the author can understand their perspectives and reasons.

Двоякие впечатления, в целом очень интересно рассказано про жизнь города, но вот описание исторических фактов местами вызывает сомнение. Ну и самое обидное для беларуски читать, что беларусы были там где-то на обочине истории, и что беларуская мова вообще польский диалект, что противоречит даже данным в википедии.

This is very interesting read for someone interested in the history of Vilnius and Lithuania. It is a bit of a hodge podge in the early going, but the more recent history is full of interesting information and personal accounts from Venclova. It does have the air of a not particularly researched history (and there are no citations), so some of the information might need to be taken with a grain of salt. It is very much like a series of lectures by Venclova, including his strong opinions.

The most important Lithuanian poet of the 20th century has written a lovestory about the multicultural capital that is Vilnius. It is thrilling to read about history, literature and ideas on the grounds of an actual European city and their development under eight centuries without the precisment of a historian.
