From the time she was ten and tried to write her own detective series in the fashion of the Hardy Boys, Renée Pawlish has been developing her craft. Along with creative writing classes, Renée studied great writers like Dashiell Hammett, Rex Stout, Stephen King, Sue Grafton and many more. Once Renée graduated from college, she began her first novel. Now, all these years later, she has penned numerous books in a variety of genres.
Renée was born in California, but has lived most of her life in Colorado. When she's not hiking, cycling, or chasing ballplayers for autographs, she is writing mysteries and thrillers. She also has some middle grade novels waiting to be published.
Renée loves to travel and has visited numerous countries around the world. She has also spent many summer days at her parents' cabin in the hills outside of Boulder, which was the inspiration for the setting of Taylor Crossing in her novel Nephilim: Genesis of Evil.

Reed and his fairly new girlfriend, Willie, are asleep in his condo when he is awakened by a fire in the old Victorian across the street. Of the three units, one person is found in the top-floor unit dead. Willie is the owner/landlord of the building and becomes the police’s #1 suspect. Reed needs to find out who wanted Nick O’Rourke dead and who wants Reed off the case. What did Nick have in his apartment that someone else wants and is sneaking around at night among the rubble to find it? But, Nick was not a nice person and lots of people had reason to wish him dead. The book was a fast, fun read — more sophisticated than a cozy mystery, but not nearly as deep and long as a book written by, say…Deville Nelson.
15 stars!!!!!! Wow, when Willie needs help Reed moves heaven and earth to fix it and found out, who, why and when did it. Reed has his gang of misfits to help whether he thought he didn't need it, he got it thank goodness. He got in a few really bad situations that turned out to help, but not before the people didn't take a little of a pound of flesh off of him, for getting in their business. There happened to be murder, fires, bombs, and gambling depths, and the mob, ex-girlfriend, ex-wife, and ex-business partner. You won't be disappointed, Renee did it again. I read this book in a 12 hour period, I didn't sleep much.
very enjoyable, suspense kept you waiting for the finale, it was definately a good read, although I think I prob should have read the others first but it didnt detract from the overall story. The characters are great, watch out for the twists to throw you off !!!
Life is good for Reed Ferguson. He has a beautiful girlfriend and work is good. Then the unthinkable happens. His girfriend’s house is set afire and one of her tenants is found dead in the rubble. As usual, Reed steps up to solve the mystery. This installment has the usual twists and turns and unexpected red herrings with the surprise ending.
I have really been enjoying working my way through this series. Reed Ferguson is a likeable guy with fun and dependable friends. There is plenty of humor and references to noir movies. Reed’s obsession with film noir is endearing. His mother is a real hoot! I look forward to seeing more of him.
Johnny Peppers did an excellent job with this narration as usual. He is always a pleasure to listen to!!

Torch Scene was an average read. Most of it wasn't anything not read in a previous book. Reed is getting himself beat up, Cal, the hermit leaving his house again to help. The goofballs brothers were still dense but always bright enough to help Reed. The only change I could note is Reed and Willie are in the sack more and more. I guess a plus for some, but for me, one of the biggest yawns in most reads these days. At least I do not have to partake in their time n the sack.
As for the plot, I identified the villain when they were first introduced. It was such an obvious clue; I'm assuming the author was intentional. Another unanswered question until the end was obvious way earlier.
I still like Reed Ferguson Mysteries, but it seems to have peaked and is just another good read.
This was one of my favorite books in the series so far. Willie's house is burned down and a dead body is found among the ashes. When it is discovered that the fire was a case of arson, and that Willie and the deceased weren't exactly bosom buddies, she becomes the #1 suspect in the fire and the murder. And on a positive note, Reed and Willie's relationship moved forward in a significant way. You don't have to start with the first book in the series to know who's who or what's going on, but it would be more fun that way!
Solid mystery with the usual nods to the heroes and tropes of film noir. Reed gets himself into and out of all sorts of trouble, with the help of Willie, his best friend Cal, and - last but not least - the Goofball Brothers. This story probably doesn't work as well as a standalone as others in the series, there isn't much "extra" characterization, the reader is already supposed to know the cast well enough.
It was ok. It seemed weird how little he shared with the police and how much he got away with. I guess in a sense the author was able to convey a noir feeling to the book. I doubt I'll read any more by her. As if it weren't obvious, I do enjoy reading murder mysteries, but I'm finding most modern ones very simplistic and lacking imagination (which is a bit redundant, I know). The book moves along at a good clip and was engaging, so there is that. Hence the 3 stars.
A fast-read of a mystery that is entertaining and light. Really loved it, except for some of the language, which I'll admit was very mild by today's standards. It's a story of Reed Ferguson, private eye, trying to rescue his girlfriend from a murder charge when her building catches fire. I did figure out who did it, but it was fun, nonetheless.
Plot is fine but it's low on character. This is a later book in a series I've not read, so it probably relies on preexisting characterization. For me reading it on its own, I struggled to care about the characters and even ended up putting it down and reading another book in the middle.
Always guarantee a good mystery with a dose of humour from the author. Reed's girlfriend has her house burnt down and one of the tenants is found dead. Reed now has to find out who is responsible with a number of suspects available. Enjoyable way to pass a few hours.
It is my belief that R. Pawlish was waiting to write this book. I don't want to give too much away, but a statue is involved. My only criticism is that if this guy Ferguson in the story wants to be a PI, he seriously needs to get some self-defense classes! But as always it's a fun story and I enjoyed reading it.
I enjoy detective mystery genre. Easy light read with well developed main characters and good storyline. More twists to keep you guessing till reed solves the case. Not my first reed ferguson mystery and won't be my last. Do yourself a favor. Read it.
These are fast reads usually and this one really kept you turning pages. Lots of twists and turns with a few firebombs thrown in for good measure. Reed is very likable. If you're fond of detective stories, this series won't disappoint you.
This was a great action, murder ,mystery. The story starts off fast and doesn't slow down till the end. You never know unless you pay strict attention , who was the culprit.
Reed Ferguson works his magic on this mystery. He has to save his girlfriend from being charged with murder and arson when her house burns, killing one of her renters.
This book kept me on my seat, the story was packed with excitement and suspense. The characters were believable. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys cozy mysteries.
This book has a little different twist to it . Reed Ferguson is a good investigator and gets his man, but has a few scrapes to do it. I don't really like the references to all the old movies.
Very good book. Reed and his girlfriend, Willie are sleeping at his place when her house catches fire. Everything points to Willie being guilty so Reed needs to find out who started the fire and killed one of Willie's renters.
I enjoyed the bit of romance that went along with the story. I also enjoyed the twists and turns but some of the parts of the story seemed unnecessary.
