Intrigued by Polynesian folklore, biologist Thor Heyerdahl suspected the South Sea Islands had been settled by an ancient race, led by a mythical hero, Kon Tiki. To prove his theory, he duplicated the 4300 mile journey across the Pacific. Starting on April 28, 1947, Heyerdahl and 5 others sailed from Peru on a balsa log raft. After 3 months and many harrowing adventures, they sighted land, the Polynesian island of Pukapuka.

Loved all these novels, every one, in the 1960's. Airs Above the Ground is a fast moving story of intrigue involving the Spanish Riding School and the Lippizaner stallions; Up the Down Staircase is at times funny and sad and always gripping as it follows the diary of an inner city school teacher; Kon Tiki is a thrilling and true life sea saga; How Far to Bethlehem is a sweet and moving story of those on their way to Bethlehem for a very important event. Loved this collection then, well worth reading again and again.
