Ice Mountain #2

An Amish Man of Ice Mountain

Rate this book
An Amish Man

Joseph King has good reasons to work an oil rig far from his beloved Ice Mountain . . . and to mind his own business. He hopes to protect his younger brother Edward from worldly influences. And maybe he can finally forget how yielding to temptation forced him to leave home in disgrace. Still, no honorable Amish man would let Priscilla Allen and her four-year-old daughter remain homeless, living out of their car. And how can he not be drawn to the feisty waitress's bravery and hidden strength . . .

Offering Priscilla a home on Ice Mountain as his wife-in-name-only gives her a place to start again. For Joseph, it's also an unexpected chance to regain his reputation and standing in the community. But Priscilla's warmth, caring, and determination to adjust to Amish society are renewing Joseph's long-buried hope. Now as his guilt and her wrenching secrets threaten the fragile trust growing between them, they will need the riskiest of miracles to put the past to rest--and fulfill a promise only love and renewed faith can bring.

This is most definitely not your typical Amish fiction! Kelly Long has written a book filled with passion and there are scenes of sexual expression. I felt it was very tastefully written but want to disclose it as some readers may be surprised or even shocked. This book also deals with some very heavy issues but I do not want to spoil the book for readers so I will let readers discover the issues for themselves. Joseph is such an honest and caring young Amish man. It is hard not to love the man. Forgiveness and confession play a large part in the story.
I have experienced some of the issues addressed in the book and it helped me to read this account. The setting of Ice Mountain is so peaceful and beautiful. I could picture it all as if I were actually there myself. I wish I could go to a place like it to relax and reflect, taking along some special family members and friends who also need healing. Ice Mountain is indeed a place of healing and peace for the characters. The story is so compelling that I finished it in just two short evenings. Readers will not be disappointed. I am interested in seeing what other readers think of this unique book. I rate this book 5 stars and highly recommend it to readers.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS SERIES OF BOOKS

When I saw the cover of these books, I really had to have them, because I love pretty covers. And these are very good and well written stories, I just don’t agree with them being listing as Christian or Inspirational fiction. In book one, The Amish Bride of Ice Mountain, I felt the author went overboard with giving detailed descriptions of the love scenes, this is for secular books, not books labeled as Christian fiction. Then I read the second book, The Man of Ice Mountain and it was even worse even more detailed scenes. I respect people who enjoy this type of book, but not if they are listed as Christian. For this reason, I didn’t bother to read Book Three, because I didn’t want to waist one or two days on a book I didn’t feel comfortable reading. Like I said, these are really good stories, but they are definitely NOT Christian or Inspirational fiction. I am sorry but I can not support contents like that here.

I received this book from Zebra Publishing to read and review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 55.

DISAPPOINTING

I was very disappointed in this book as it was not the caliber of other Amish books that I've read. The "love scenes" were very explicit and that was not necessary. The author could have gotten her point across with out doing so. I will not read another book by this author & I most definitely would not recommend it.

I thought this book was a bad example of Amish fiction, it was like the author wanted to write a steamy romance novel and knowing that Amish fiction is popular added in the Amish. I have three of the series and hope the other two are better.

The Amish Man of Ice Mountain by Kelly Long is the second book in The Amish of Ice Mountain series. Joseph King is away from the mountain with his younger brother, Edward, working at Commodore Gas Drilling Rig in West Virginia. Joseph does not like it, but he feels he needs to keep an eye on Edward (who spends a lot of time drinking and playing cards). They work four weeks on and two weeks off. On his weeks Joseph likes to spend his time in town at the Bear Claw Inn run by Mary (call her Mama) Malizza. During his recent stay Joseph meets her newest staff member, Priscilla Allen. Of course, when they meet he is only wearing a towel (he just got out of the bath and was expecting his brother). Joseph finds out that Priscilla is living in her car with her daughter, Hollie. They are running from her abusive ex-husband, Heath. Despite the divorce Heath still wants to control Priscilla (and he likes to do it by taking Hollie).

Joseph tells Priscilla that he knows of a safe place and he is willing to take her. Priscilla agrees and they head to Ice Mountain, Pennsylvania. The Bishop agrees to let Priscilla and Hollie stay in their community. He assigns Joseph as Priscilla’s prayer partner. Hollie is tired of running and embraces life on Ice Mountain.

We also get to see how Mary and Jude are doing. Mary is pregnant with their first child and Jude is teaching at the school. They agree to take in Priscilla and Hollie. Abner King is lonesome in the house by himself and is happy to see Joseph. Joseph does not think that he will ever marry. There is something in his past that he cannot get over and has never revealed to anyone. Priscilla has her abusive husband as well as an abusive father as baggage. Edward returns to the mountain and finds that life has kept moving on while he was away. His intended, Sarah, has taken up herbal healing while he was gone. She is more confident. Edward does not know if he likes the changes. Will Priscilla and Joseph be able to unload their baggage and move forward with their lives? Will Heath find Priscilla and Hollie on Ice Mountain? To see what happens read The Amish Man of Ice Mountain.

I have tried to just give you an overview of the book. There are several story lines in the book. I give The Amish Man of Ice Mountain 4.25 out of 5 stars. It is a lovely story but very similar to the first book. I like that we are getting a view of a different Amish culture. The ice mine sounds fascinating (I would love to see it). There are some great characters in the book as well as the lovely setting.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel from NetGalley (and the publisher) in exchange for an honest review.

The Amish Man of Ice Mountain is the second book in thus-far excellent series by Kelly Long. While this book could be read before The Amish Bride of Ice Mountain I would recommend you read the books in order. Ms. Long has a beautiful way of writing endearing characters and you will enjoy characters like Abner, Jude, Mary, and two personal favorites of mine-- Grossmudder May and the Bishop.

The main character of this story is Joseph, the brother of Mary who was the Amish Bride of book one. Ms. Long provides a powerful lesson in what is definitely a crime but often goes unreported. And not another word about that ...

I adore Joseph. You see these characters are very real to me. I'm just sure there *is* an Ice Mountain Amish community and Joseph lives there. I would love to sit on the porch and have a glass of Mary's lemonade. And oh, would I have questions for the Bishop

I highlighted so many passages in this book. Kindle has four highlight colors and the color indicates my feeling about a passage at the time I read/highlight. Blue denotes Bible verses or something that is closely related to the Bible. Pink is my "Hmm. That's interesting." Yellow is "Boy. That is REALLY interesting. And orange is for *profound* words or paragraphs. Something that makes me truly think. And something I want to re-read. Something I hope I can remember. Something of great use and value.
I have many orange highlights.

As I read through my highlights (something I do for every book review) I have the blessing of reading those words that I found the "best of the best" when I originally read the story.

I quote one below and it was the first orange highlight I made.
"...falling means getting up. Standing up again and again. Until the falling doesn't matter as much as the standing."

Isn't that something. Substitute failing for falling. I don't remember who said it or the exact wording. But it goes something like this -- Those who are successful are those who have failed the most. Why? Because they keep getting back up and trying again.

I wrote a note about half-way through this book that summarizes of how Kelly Long writes.
This author's words are filled with such wisdom, at times profound wisdom.

I can see the hand of God in her writing.

Do read this wonderful inspiring series.

The second installment of Long’s Ice Mountain series offers a stronger premise for a relationship between the main characters than the first title, but the author continues to focus on the explicit physical details of the romance, which feels very awkward in an Amish story.

Joseph spends his energy trying to keep his wayward younger brother out of trouble, secretly struggling with guilt over a sexual relationship he had as a teen with an older Englisch woman. Priscilla is running from an abusive ex-husband who will stop at nothing to get her back. When Joseph discovers her living in a car with her 5-year-old daughter, he is determined to keep them both safe by bringing them to Ice Mountain. (Zebra, May, 352 pp., $7.99)

I had to stop reading this book because I don't believe that it should be catalogued under Christian fiction. The sexual scenes were too much for me!

A. Wonderful and Fun Read!

This is a different kind of Amish novel. The mountain Amish of Ice Mountain are a hundred years behind the other Amish in Pennsylvania and that a long with their unusual Bishop makes Kelly Kong's Ice Mountain books such great reads. The characters are complex and they grow so much in this novel as Joseph, an Amish man working on an oil rig to watch over his younger brother who is working on the rig to save money so he can get married. Joseph never plans to marry. Neither of the men end up as they expect and that is the fun part. Serious topics are dealt with in this book as well such as abusive spouses. The first book was so good that I have bought three more!

This is the second book in a 6 book series. I didn't realize it when I bought it. When I looked on Goodreads, there were differences in opinions on the book. I will say that if you are looking for a regular Amish Fiction book, then you will think this is Fifty Shades of Grey because there is talks of having sex in the book. Joseph, an Amish man was working on an oil rig. When he meets Priscilla at a saloon, he realizes that her and her young daughter are living out of her car. When he hears of her sorted past, he offers to take her up Ice Mountain to stay with him and the rest of the Amish people. Will they fall in love? Will her past come back to haunt her?

This book takes on sensitive subjects that are not usually a part of Amish fiction and I thought the author presented them in a respectful, thoughtful and compelling manner that made Joseph and Priscilla’s story especially thought provoking. Joseph’s kindness and concern for Priscilla and her daughter Hollie who are on the run from her abusive husband speaks volumes about the Christian faith he practices and life on Ice Mountain is quaint, loving and inspirational. I especially enjoyed the sensual nature of Joseph and Priscilla’s relationship which greatly adds to the romantic nature of the story.

I think I am now current, but of course I didn't read them in the proper order. It was neat knowing how things were going to go with one set of characters since I ended up picking up #3 by accident first.
This allowed me to fill in a few blanks from the later books. This one also didn't leave much to the imagination about relationships between married couples.
Enjoyed the series.

Definitely not like any of the Amish stories I have read before. Story/plot jumped around, skimmed over events - no depth, not sure what the x-rated stuff was that popped in towards the end - had nothing to do with the rest of the book and was a trumped up version that seemed it was written by a pre-pubescent wanna be.

Very un-typical, un-Amish and un-traditional story about love and healing. Or not?

The two were somehow meant to be together, but in the "normal" world would their love be going towards the very dysfunctional end. Both are scarred on their souls - Amish man Joseph has fallen victim to the seduction of older sexual predatoress in his youth and has been feeling "dirty" since, not understanding that he was the victim there. Englischer Priscilla realized only after her wedding that she married a psychopath who has been beating and abusing her from the very first day of the marriage. But God can heal even these two broken people and make their love story to go strong.

I must honestly say I was quite nervous to read this book, after the series was being labeled "erotic" in some reviews. And yes, it is - I would not call it erotic (even of some content is quite explicit, but never cheap), but it is sexual FOR ALL OF THE RIGHT REASONS. Yes, it is very open. yes, not for the young readers. Yes, you should be warned beforehand. But it is not the vulgar sexuality to arouse the cheapest instincts, it is about sexuality in its beauty - and yes, even in the purity of the heart, even if it might sound strange in this context. And the most importantly - it is a love story, with the sexuality integrated within. And it just rings true. There, I have said that.

And even more, it is a very Christian story (sans explicit scenes) about healing and forgiveness, about finding peace and trust towards people once again, about leaving your (false) shame in front of the God's face.
And it is a powerful story - you should dive deep and read about all of the amazing love God has for us.

And I just love some of the characters - like Grossmudder May, who is wise above the common wisdom; the bishop with the true heart of the leader and Sarah, the heroine of the following novel (yay!) with the gift of healing. God's power shines through these wise people.

My only reservation is about the speed of resolving of issues - there is no "present time" suffering in the book, every unhappy thing/feeling is solved quite quickly, which I find quite unrealistic.

And now I am off to read about Edward and Sarah in the third installment of the series!

Joseph King followed his younger brother Edward to West Virginia to work on the oil rig there. Edward picks up some bad habits that the other oil rig English men do themselves on their off time.

Priscilla Allen and her four-year-old daughter remain homeless, living out of their car after months of running. Priscilla applies for a job a Bear Claw Inn, owned by Mary "Mama" Malizza, where she meets Joseph and the other men in the dining room.

Can secrets stay secrets?? Can trust be learned and earned? Forgiveness to those who trespass against us?

"'Maybe there's so much more to everyone's story.'"

Anyone who reads An Amish Man of Ice Mountain should know that An Amish Man of Ice Mountain is not the innocent Amish reading material that we have read before. The content is need to understand the topic of the book that An Amish Man of Ice Mountain is based around.

Kelly Long has out done herself with An Amish Man of Ice Mountain. It's not easy taking on a topic that most won't take on themselves to write about, but most readers don't realize it does exist in an Amish communities. Nor is it easy for anyone to talk about either.

Over all, I loved An Amish Man of Ice Mountain. I felt like I was there with the characters experiencing everything they were experiencing and feeling all they were feeling, too; which I love to do when I'm reading. I was on my edge of seat, and not wanting to put down my Kindle to sleep, drive my bus, eat, or attend to my daily routine.

MY REVIEW
Amazing writing and such an unusual story for an Amish book. Kelly really mixes the Amish and the Englisch lives in this series. This book takes on a subject that you don't normally read about in a Amish story. There is some sexual content but nothing 'too deep'. I am enjoying this series and really looking forward to reading "The Amish Heart of Ice Mountain" when it comes out in October.

Joseph King was 23. He worked from dawn to dusk. His job was exhausting mentally, physically, and spiritually. He worked four weeks on and two weeks off. He was driven to keep his 21yr old brother Edward safe and away from the world's influence. They were working on a gas drilling rig in West Virginia. They'd been there about two months. The brothers were complete opposites. Mary "Mama" Malizza ran the Bear Claw Inn with a soft heart and an iron hand. She knew how to handle rough men and understood them. Priscilla was hired as a waitress on a one week trial. She had a 4yr old daughter named Holly and they lived in Priscilla's station wagon. Joseph saw Priscilla go to the car and found out they were living in it. He tried to do little things to help out. Joseph took Priscilla and Holly to Ice Mountain for sanctuary. Her mother had been Amish but left to marry her dad.Priscilla was a very strong woman and did whatever it took to keep her child and herself safe. She had a good heart and was a good person. Once she grew enough to trust again and to learn to love. She was a great mom and everything she did was for Holly until she met an Amish man. Through the twists and turns of the story, Priscilla finds true contentment and love. Joseph felt he didn't deserve a family because of the bad things he'd done as a teenage boy. He loved his family and community. He was kind, compassionate and a good man. He, too, had a lot of growing and forgiving of himself to do. It was a good story. I recommend it to anyone that likes this genre.

I have a love and hate relationship with this series. There's a lot of thing that set this series apart from the typical Amish romance, some are good, some aren't so good.

Likes:

1. I like that we see the Amish portrayed as sexual beings. I realize that they are a very religious people but they do have the same desires the rest of us have, and it is nice to see them portrayed as such.

2. I love that these books aren't set in the usual settings. (It is also cool that the ice mine is real)

3. Each book has a real world issue that the Amish people are dealing with. In this book it is domestic violence and sexual abuse.

4. I really love the characters and how the characters from the first book still figure prominently into this story, without making things difficult to understand.

Dislikes

1. Joseph's father's cancer/heart attack/illness whatever you want to call it. I like miracles where they can be believable, but in this case it was laughable. A stage 4 lung cancer diagnosis usually doesn't happen in the ER either and PET scans don't usually happen that way either.

2. The bishop letting all the Englischers into the faith. To the best of my knowledge about this faith, it is not that easy, even if they are a mountain people. The bishop seemed a little too easygoing.

3. This story seemed to go on much longer than it should have. I felt it should have wrapped up after the drama with Priscilla's ex or even after the business with her father.

The book was enjoyable but there was way too much that didn't feel quite right for the Amish

I just finished the second book in this series, and yes you should read the first, but this can be a read alone. When the first book ended Joseph King was departing the mountain to follow his brother Edward and be there for him.
We find the men working on an oil rig, and living in West Virginia, with Edward continuing some of his bad choices. Joseph is trying to help, but finding Edward often out of control, how can he change him and continues to plead to God.
Joseph has an encounter with a pretty divorced woman and her precocious 4 year old, who he find out are living in their car. Joseph has let all know that he is not interested in marriage, but does God have other plans?
I so enjoyed this book and how you don’t see what is coming next. There is such compassion shown by these people, and makes you want to live here. We revisit the ice mine on this picturesque mountain in Pennsylvania. Loved how some of the evil that is present is shown the hand of God, and dealt with in a loving but firm manner.
This is a fast and enjoyable read, and you should read the first book, it is referenced and continued here, but you can read this one alone, but don’t deprive yourself! I can’t wait for the next book, and what happens between Edward and Sarah?

“The Amish Man of Ice Mountain” by Kelly Long is a story of two brothers from Ice Mountain, Pennsylvania who are working on an oil rig in West Virginia. They are working there because opportunities in their hometown are not so great. Joseph is the older brother who carries a secret from his past that continues to weigh him down. Edward, the younger, is supposed to be saving money in order to marry his sweetheart back home. However, Edward is drinking and carousing far too much. They meet a new waitress at their boarding house, Priscilla and her young daughter Hollie. Joseph finds out that the two are living in their car in the parking lot and tries to help them. The story continues as these three struggle with their secrets while also struggling with their faith. The book kept my interest throughout was well written, and the characters were well thought out.

The many divided reviews made me curious about this book and I decided to pick it up and see for myself. I’m not an avid Amish fiction reader, but I have read enough to know that what Long did in this book is outside the box and ‘too much’ for many readers of Amish fiction.

Like any human being, the Amish struggle with the same sexual desires as anyone. I found it really refreshing to read the sexual parts in this book. Concerning this, it’s it a realistic storyline.
Besides the sexual scenes, I found other scenes lacking in development and sometimes a bit unbelievable or wrapped up too fast. There are also scenes in the book that I’m not sure about why they were in the story. Perhaps it is something that will be dealt with in the next book in series?

All in all, this was an enjoyable and refreshing read. There is sexual content in the story. If you can’t deal with that, then don’t read the book. It’s not just one scene – it is something that repeats often during the storyline.

I was surprised when I read An Amish Man of Ice Mountain. It's not an Amish fiction of simple sweet romance or mystery. The author writes about some issues that many people like to avoid and in this book there are scenes of sexual connections and expressions of these sexual feelings, but this is happening between husband and wife. I do believe the author needed to write these expressions and connections to correlate with the issues in this book and Kelly Long is excellent in her writing of these sensitive issues and how the experiences were described. Also, there are other characters and happenings described in great detail until they felt real. An Amish Man of Ice Mountain was interesting to me and it's the 2nd Book in the Amish Romance Series: Ice Mountain. I'm fascinated by this series and looking forward to the 3rd Book.

I received a complimentary copy from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for my honest review. This review is one hundred percent my opinion.

Not a G-rated book; likely not PG-13, either.

Unusual book, considering the Amish setting. The story was interesting, but note the caveat about a fair amount of sexual content. It did not offend me, but it might not work for readers who assume a book about Amish characters will leave the bedroom door closed.

I did finish the book, and the ending was something of a cliffhanger for the sequel. I forgot to mention that ICE MOUNTAIN is a trilogy of books about siblings: in the first, the sister meets an "English" teacher, then the two brothers get their stories.

The unreality of the story IMHO is reflected in the lower-than-usual rating: it was an OK read. Since I did give the first book a 4-star rating, I may or may not read the younger brother's story.
