Good book. Andrea is trying to finish the work on her PhD, which means all night at the observatory telescope, watching for the appearance of a new star. Then she'll have the credentials she needs for an overseas job, away from the influences of her prominent parents, neither of whom are happy with her presence in Texas. One night she witnesses some strange lights that may be smugglers, finds a badly beaten man and is run off the road and almost killed as she tries to get him to a hospital. She's rescued by Sheriff Pete Morrison, but nearly kidnapped by a fake Homeland Security agent. Andrea is in danger and Pete is the one assigned to keep her safe while they try to find out who wants her and why.

I liked both Andrea and Pete. Andrea is smart, funny and determined. She knows what she wants, but she suffers from somewhat overprotective parents, especially her father. As he is somewhat high up in his current profession, his interference is particularly frustrating for her. When she sees the lights that night, her first thought is to get pictures so she can find out what it is. When she finds the injured man by her car, she knows she needs to help. She keeps her head pretty well during the attack that follows, and again at the hospital. Pete's insistence on protecting her makes her feel safe, but she also wants to protect her independence. Her attraction to him isn't helping her keep her distance. As they work together, the attraction keeps getting stronger, but both of them have reasons they shouldn't get involved. Attraction overcomes reason and things between them get pretty intense, but their obstacles are still there. I liked the way that she resisted getting sent away for safety and insisted on being involved in a way that could help. I especially liked the way she was shown having some doubts about whether she was doing the right thing, and that she had fears about what could happen. It made her more realistic as a character. I also liked her relationship with her father, who at times seemed overbearing and others he was just a worried dad. At the end, I loved how it was the combination of dad and commander who was able to make her happy ending possible.

Pete has become the acting sheriff as the current sheriff, who is also his adoptive father, is preparing to retire. He has some decisions to make about his future because running for election as sheriff would reveal a secret about his past that could be trouble for his dad. He likes what he does, but causing trouble for his father is not an option. The trouble that comes his way via Andrea isn't making things any easier. It becomes obvious that there's more going on than a simple car accident when he rescues her from an attempted kidnapping. Having Homeland Security involved and his forced participation in the task force makes it more likely that his secret won't stay one for long. Added to all of that is his attraction to Andrea. Besides the chemistry between them, he just plain likes her. She's smart and funny, even if he doesn't always understand what she's talking about. He'd like to pursue a relationship with her, but with his past it isn't possible. In the meantime he's determined to keep her safe, and her insistence on being in the middle of what's going on is making him crazy. When the unthinkable happens and she is taken, it's Pete that has the ability to save her, and he knows that she's counting on him to do just that. And when it's all over he has to have the willpower to let her go.

The suspense of the story was good. It is a continuation of the theme of drug and weapons smuggling that has been in previous books by the author. There were some very intense moments, especially at the end, as Andrea's safety was at risk. There were many possibilities they had to consider about what was happening and why, and the steps they had to take to cover each one. I really enjoyed seeing the various personalities on the task force and how they worked together. It will be interesting to see which ones appear in future books.

I enjoyed reading The Sheriff "West Texas Watchmen" series by Angi Morgan very much. Sheriff Pete Morrison has secrets from childhood. He thought his father had adopted him when his real dad was sent to prison. The town just accepted Pete as Joe's son. Joe was a sheriff also but was retiring and wanted Pete to take over. In comes Andrea Allen. A flighty woman. She is a student there to look at the star and night trying to find a new star. But....drug runners are in the area. They think Andrea heard something she wasn't suppose to hear. They are after her now and Pete wants to make sure nothing happens to Andrea. A good read.

I absolutely loved this. It was fast moving with an interesting twist. It was so hard to put down and I really want to read more of this author's work. The characters were so descriptive and I really wanted them to find a way to be together because they are so different. Not for under 18.

The book begins very well, grabbing my attention and keeping it for several chapters. Though it never bored me, the action stalled through most of the rest of the book. Only Andrea seems at all concerned about her friend’s disappearance. Nobody is scouring the desert looking for her or publicizing her as missing. The relationship between Pete and Andrea rises and sinks for absurd reasons and sometimes no reason. It was also frustrating to repeatedly have the same thing explained twice in different words, sometimes in the same sentence. Pete and Joe’s secret seemed overblown to me and its resolution was predictable. Despite these problems, the story and writing were enough to maintain my enjoyment.

I thought it was one of the best books I have read by harlequin in a long time. I loved the character of joe, and how andrea was brave, smart and independent. Her relationship with her father, i found quite confusing those. I loved the fact that Joe and andrea were not afraid to call out pete on the crap they saw him dishing out. I have to wonder if the villian is somehow related to pete. I do not trust some of the agents and think one of them is somehow connected to the villian.

Never a dull moment!

This story moved fast, with a lot of humor and life or death stakes for three books! I loved it. The heroine was feisty, the hero all kinds of aw shucks, both of them super competent and swooning for each other. Five stars of yum.

It kept your interest from the start. Honey and Peach were really down-home characters.

I received this book for free at the RT 2015 convention, but my review reflects my honest opinion.

I haven't read a straight up Harlequin for quite some time, but this one seems to be everything you'd want and expect from a Harlequin Intrigue. It's not my thing, but if you enjoy other books in this line, you'll enjoy this one.

Andrea Allen is the daughter of a very high ranking soldier type, currently in the Department of Homeland Security. She fought her parents for the right to finish her Ph.D. in Astronomy in a small town in Texas. One night leaving the observatory she sees lights that look like the local alien obsession and runs to her car to get her video camera. A man crawls toward her beaten nearly to death asking for help. She gets him into her car and while they are driving to the hospital she is run off the road by something in the air. Andrea is found a few hours later by our hero, Sheriff Pete Morrison, but the man is already dead. Andrea is slightly injured and Pete takes her to the hospital. While there she is nearly abducted by a man posing as the DHS, but Pete saves her. Meanwhile, the body of the dead man disappears.

This story has very familiar elements. Andrea and Pete kiss almost immediately, he has a terrible secret that compels him to tell her over and over again that they can never be together, Andrea is very plucky and surprisingly intelligent, and Pete is the strong silent type. He spends the entire book trying to stop her from assisting her father with the investigation. The villain is very over the top with multiple quirks. There were a few plot holes, but the one that really bothered me is when her Department of Homeland Security tracking devices fail when wet. Really? The DHS can think to give her earrings with tracking devices in them, but it doesn't occur to them to make the electronics waterproof?

Personally, I prefer less of the "we can never be together (because of my terrible secret)", less of the heroine not understanding her limitations, and a whole lot less of the hero telling the heroine what she can and can't do. Andrea was more interesting than I expected and I enjoyed her personality. Her father was much more likable than I expected and not the usual cold, inflexible, dominating military father that's in so many other books.

I really enjoyed this book. I loved the story line, action, suspense, and romance.

Andrea was strong heroine. Her father was a military officer, most of the time throughout the story she called him commander, and not dad. He taught her how to shoot, fly a helicopter, life saving skills, and basic first aid. Andrea ended up using all her father had taught her when faced with illegal aliens that was part of a drug smuggling ring. Andrea's father was assigned to the Customs and Border Protection office, reporting directly to the DHS. The leader in the ring wanted to kidnap her, and make a deal with her father to transport the drugs.

Pete was Sheriff, and appointed himself as Andrea's body guard. I loved the way the two worked together as a team. He was impressed with a lady that could shoot, and wasn't afraid to do so.

I loved this book, and I'm looking forward to reading the other books in the series.

"Morgan’s newest not only has an independent and quirky heroine, but an adorably quirky — and steamy — romance between the hero and heroine. While the playful banter was a nice addition, the storyline also felt fresh and full of intrigue" (RT Book Reviews, 4 stars).

Angi Morgan has done a great job writing the series The Watchmen of Texas. In the first book your grande right from the start and the mystery just gets bigger and bigger until the end were you let out your breath that you've been holding. Who said that true love can't be love at first sight.
