Houston homicide detective Brittany Garner just got hit with a one-two punch. The twin sister she never knew existed has been found dead, leaving behind a three-month-old daughter. Brittany's vow to find her sister's murderer, as well as the father of the orphaned infant, leads straight to Cannon Dalton. A bull rider who spends his life roaming from rodeo to rodeo, Cannon has only one mission now: protect the beautiful cop and the child who could be his. Caught in the crosshairs of escalating danger—and his powerful desire for Brittany—Cannon races to stop a desperate killer…and a revenge that's been a long time coming.
Joanna Wayne began her professional writing career with the release of her first novel, DEEP IN THE BAYOU, in 1994, but Joanna will be the first to tell you that the wheels were set in motion years before. She started reading at four years of age, the same age that she began making weekly trips to the library to check out as many books as they’d let her have, only to finish reading them all before bedtime. That love of books never waned.
Joanna was born and raised in Shreveport, Louisiana and was the middle child of a large family. She moved to New Orleans, Louisiana in 1984 when she married her current husband. New Orleans opened up a whole new realm of activities and she found the mix of cultures, music, history, food and sultry southern classics along with her love of reading a natural impetus for beginning her writing career. It was there that she attended her first writing class and joined her first professional writing organization. From that point on, there was no looking back.
Now, forty published books later, Joanna has made a name for herself as being on the cutting edge of romantic suspense in both series and mainstream novels. She is known for the suspense and emotion she brings to the page, as she takes ordinary people and thrusts them into life-and-death situations. She has been on the Walden Bestselling List for romance and won many industry awards. She is a popular speaker at writing organizations and local community functions and has taught creative writing at the University of New Orleans Metropolitan College.
She currently resides in a small community forty miles north of Houston, Texas with her husband. Though she still has many family and emotional ties to Louisiana, she loves living in the Lone Star state.
I really enjoyed this book. It is the 4th book in a series. Each book could be read as a standalone. R. J was not a good father. Now that he has a brain tumor, he wants to get to know his sons. The sons has a lot of resentment towards R.J. In each book one of the sons comes around, and the family keeps growing. I also loved the suspense of each book.
In this book Britney was about to take her very first vacation. She is a homicide detective. She gets called to the morgue. When she gets there she sees a mirror image of herself. She had no idea she had a twin sister. Shortly after she gets attacked. She is ordered off the case. Her sister had a 3 month old daughter. The father who is a cowboy that rides bulls has no idea that he is a dad. I loved how protective Cannon was, and how he watched over Britney throughout the book. The two worked to solve the murder, and throughout the book their friendship grew into love. She may have been ordered off the attack, but she just couldn't sit by, and do nothing. She was determined to get answers.
The Bull Rider and the Cop From the moment Detective Brit Garner stares at the body of her twin sister in the morgue, I was hooked. In addition to the mystery of her death, her sister leaves a baby – and instructions to take the child to her father. Cannon Dalton has plans for his future. An infant daughter and reconciliation with his father are not included. He has doubts the child is his, but consents to the paternity testing. He wants information, thinking Brit holds the key, he goes to talk to her. Brit’s in danger. She manages to wound the man attacking her in her own home but the department demands she take time off to recover from injuries and gain distance from her sister’s case. Cannon sees an opportunity to get his answers and takes her to his father’s ranch, where his extended and estranged family is caring for his daughter. Family secrets, revenge, and crime for hire combine for an excellent read.
Midnight Rider the Big "D" Dads: The Dalton's is number four in the series by Joanna Wayne. I really liked this book. It pulls together all the other children from the first three books. Cannon Dalton is the start of this book. He is a rodeo cowboy. Hates his dad just like all the other children did. He meets Brittany Garner who is a detective trying to find out who killed her dad and her twin sister she didn't know she had until her murder. Her twin sister has a three month old little girl. In papers found in her apartment is says the father is Cannon Dalton and to get the baby to him. A lot goes on in this story. Someone is trying to kill Brittany. You will be surprised to find out who it is. Also does Cannon forgive his dad. A very good read.
Strong cast of characters with an intriguing murder mystery round out this suspense. The heroine was a tough as nails homicide detective who gets a huge surprise at the morgue. The woman lying on the slab looks exactly like her. From here story moves along quickly. There is the investigation into her twins’ murder along with an attempt on her own life. In the middle of this is the hero who is introduced when it turns out he fathered a baby with the dead twin he knew nothing about.
For the most part the story was strong. I felt the reveal of the who and why of the murder(s) was weak but otherwise it was a good romantic suspense.
The cowboy and homicide cop story was a balanced one where neither character was stronger than the other which was a pleasant suprise. Both characters were strong but flawed which showed their vulnerability. I enjoyed the way their relationship played out although as sometimes happens it was very fast from meeting to being in love. Getting to know the who the characters are and feeling their relationship grow stuffers a bit for me to be completely satisfied but it was enjoyablr.
Good book with a strong start that just keeps getting better. Brit is a Houston homicide detective who is dedicated to her job. Just as she's getting ready to take the first vacation she's had in years, she's called to the morgue to view a body - one that looks just like her. She discovers that the woman is the twin sister she never knew she had, and that she left behind a three month old daughter. First order of business is to find the little girl's father, then find out who murdered her sister and why.
Cannon Dalton is a rodeo bull rider who doesn't believe Brit when she tracks him down. She informs Cannon that she left the little girl with his father at the Dry Gulch Ranch while she looked for him. He accompanies her back to Houston to take a paternity test, all the time certain that there's no way he could be a father. When Brit is attacked while he's in Houston, his protective instincts kick in and he's determined to protect her, even if that means taking her to his father's ranch.
Cannon's father, RJ, was a terrible father when his kids were young. When he found out he was dying of a brain tumor, he was determined to try to reconnect with them. He's made peace with three of his sons, and now he's hoping to do the same with Cannon. Cannon isn't interested, having too much resentment over his dad's abandonment to want anything to do with him. But in order to keep Brit and Kimmie safe, he'll put up with RJ for a little while. Being on the ranch and around his brothers gives him a different perspective and things begin to change a little for him. I also liked seeing how Cannon went from denying he could be a father, to falling for little Kimmie and wanting to be a better father than his own had been.
Brit's been told to stay away from the investigation until she has recovered from her injuries, but she can't and won't do that. Cannon won't step back and let her investigate without him there to keep her safe. There's more than just protectiveness going on, as Cannon feels a powerful attraction to Brit, even though their lives are very different. I liked seeing the trust that developed between them first and how that trust turned to love.
The mystery is very good. Brit starts out by trying to figure out what the connection is between her sister's murder and the attack on her. There also may be a connection with her father, who was murdered three years earlier, and whose killer hasn't yet been caught. Brit's instincts tell her that her attack is related to a murderer she helped catch and convict right after she became a detective, but she can't figure out what the connection would be to her sister and father. In trying to find out more about her sister, she also learns something disturbing about her father. Just when Brit thinks everything is safe, a twist in the investigation puts her life in danger, and Cannon is the only one who can save her.
Wonderful story! Of course there is a murder that needs to be solved, but the intrigue doesn't stop there. As secrets from the past come out, the characters are faced with life changing events where choices must be made and danger is hiding around every corner. Love for a child... Love for a father...Love between a man and a woman from two different ways of life. It's all here and told in a way that keeps you turning the pages until the end. I think you will love this book. I can't wait to read the next Intrigue Joanna Wayne writes.
This quick read has a fast pace and enough twists to keep readers turning pages. Cannon comes across as a stand up guy although Brittany is prickly enough to make anyone wonder what he sees in her. In the end readers might be left scratching their heads and feeling as if they got off a tilt-a-whirl. Kaitlin Reviewer for Coffee Time Romance & More
I didn't read the first few books of this series and I found that it was still easy to pick-up with the storyline. It wasn't as suspenseful as I would've liked it to be but it was still a good read for what it was.
Thanks God the killer was not as predictable as it normally is in these books. Having a twin sister you do not know murdered is a good start of a book.
A down home read that will have your heart in your throat and hands around your book. I strongly recommend reading this series it's a read you won't forget.
