Three stars. The action is great, but little things like "his mountain green eyes" (what color is that, exactly?) and "saw the love coursing from his eyes" (oooo, is it flowing down over his cheeks?) pulled me out of the story to ponder possibilities.
I'll definitely be reading more of this series! The town of Mountain Cove, Alaska is interesting and filled with some intriguing characters.
I usually enjoy Elizabeth Goddard's work, but this one fell a little flat for me. There was some really awkward dialog between Cade and Leah. I know these romantic suspense romances move along fast, but as soon as Cade digs Leah out of an avalanche and sees her eyes...he is in love. That is a little fast even for me( a die-hard romantic.) And the man who is after Leah showing up seemingly just seconds before he attacks someone, is somewhat far-fetched. I did enjoy the interaction between Cade's family and Leah. She felt safe, comfortable and loved there. It was the best part of the book.
Wow! A wonderful suspenseful romance set in Alaska. The story grabbed me at page 1. The author use of imagery pulls the reader into the story. Leah was a beautiful young woman with a troubled childhood that left her unable to trust anyone. Suddenly she's thrown into a situation where she needs to trust someone. Cade rescued her after an avalanche, but as trusting as he was could she give him that kind of power over her? Cade senses something is off about her behavior and body language, but he vows to see this rescue through till the end. A wonderful book that I would recommend to anyone.
Buried is the fifth book I've read by Elizabeth Goddard and another enjoyable read. I really liked the characters of Cade and his family (they seemed like nice people) and although Leah wasn't a favorite heroine for me, she wasn't a bad character either.
I enjoyed the mystery/suspense side of Buried -- there were several times my pulse quickened (especially towards the end!) because of what was going on in the story. I wasn't a fan of the times when I felt the characters' actions seemed unrealistic, but other than that there weren't many things I didn't like about this book.
All in all, Buried was a good book. I enjoyed reading it and, if you enjoy Love Inspired Suspense books, I think you will too -- especially if you are a fan of books set in Alaska!

Love Inspired Suspense is a new line for me in Harlequin’s catalogues. I was intrigued by this title because I loved the idea of the story being set in Alaska. I’m so glad I ordered the book, as I’ve become a devoted fan of Elizabeth Goddard’s books since reading this first one! Buried opens with a scene that makes your scalp tingle it’s so exciting, and it sets the tone for a story that is flowing, smooth, and always keeps you guessing. Cade Warren, a search and rescue avalanche specialist is a strong, caring, intelligent man who is the perfect foil for lovely Leah Marks. She’s literally running for her life, and their attraction is intense, but always just that little bit out of reach while a man bent on vengeance hunts Leah into the remote wilds of Alaska.
Buried is the kind of story that makes you cheer for the hero, wish you were the heroine, and generally just fall in love with the whole wonderful cast of characters. From Cade’s feisty and spirited grandmother, to his siblings, everyone is richly painted on the majestic tapestry of Alaska’s snowy scenery. When the ultimate showdown brings Leah and Cade face to face with a killer, it will take your breath away! Buried is the first book in a new series called Mountain Cove, and I for one will be happy to revisit – often!
This story opens with a bang and does not let up until the riveting conclusion. Elisabeth Goddard does a spectacular job of immersing readers into settings that are dangerous and mesmerizing. I’m thrilled that this is the first in the Mountain Cove series and I’m looking forward to more books! But let me tell you what I loved about this one… Cade’s story really really hit home for me. I think a lot of people can relate to having people in our lives disappoint and let us down. Leah is on the run, hiding, desperate for answers, isn’t sure who she can trust…to me, she was so easy to empathize with and cheer on- something that’s necessary for me to enjoy main characters. The author has done a fabulous job creating memorable characters! I loved the instant connection Cade felt to Leah. It felt natural and true to his character and really worked so well for the story. This is one of those books that will keep you reading late into the night, you won’t be able to put it down!
Buried was an exciting ride from start to finish! I love the way this book starts out. The author just throws the reader right into the action and lets you start running with it! It’s a great way to start the book and pump the excitement right into the story.
Leah Marks is trying to stay alive. She is on the run and trying to hide from a pursuer who always seems to be one step ahead of her. When will she catch a break? How can she ever hope to convince people that the man they think is a hero is really a villain? And how can Leah ask for help when she doesn’t allow herself to trust people? She learned long ago that you can’t trust anyone, especially men.
Cade Warren has his own trust issues. After the woman he loved betrayed him, he plans to never let another woman into his heart. He has too much on his plate as it is. Discouraged over failed rescue attempts and the inability to live up to his father’s legacy, Cade needs some things to go his way. But, will he allow himself to open his heart up to a woman who has more secrets than he can even imagine?
I really enjoyed this exciting story and I thought both characters grew a lot throughout the book. This is the first book in the Mountain Cove series and I look forward to future books involving this family that is devoted to Search and Rescue missions.
My thanks to the author for the complimentary copy of Buried that I received in exchange for an honest review.
Buried ( Mountain Cove Book 1 ) By: Elizabeth Goddard Good story. Here is an author who knows how to weave a story with action, suspense, and romance. Before you start reading Buried, you want to be sure and be prepared for anything. You may even want to have you pair of snowshoes handy and be ready to fight for your life. Right from the start you are carried to Mountain Cove in Alaska, where love and danger collides. Buried, has you on the edge of your seated holding your breath till the last page. Leah is a legal investigator who witness a murder by the town's hero. Leah is also a young woman who does not trust men. What should she do ? She runs and ends up in a cabin in Mountain Cove Where she thinks she will be safe. She cannot escape the killer, he seems to know her every move. There is an avalanche which Leah and the killer is both trapped. Cade Warren is a search and rescue specialist who goes looking for both of them. Cade and the team have so long to find them. Leah is found and dug out, but where is the killer? Cade just had a bad relationship and he does not trust women. Leah seems to be hiding something . She does not feel safe not knowing where the killer is . What will she do, she does not want to put Cade in danger by telling him everything . She does not know who she can trust. This is one book you do not want to miss out on. I cannot wait for the next book in the series. I was given a copy of this book by the author for my honest review, which I have given.
I thought this book was great! It is one of those that once you start it, it is hard to put down. It started off full speed and did not stop until the last page. I loved the characters although Leah was hard on Cade in the beginning, both of them had problems trusting people in general. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the characters and I am looking forward to reading more from this series and this author.
Trust doesn’t come easy for Leah Marks. Too many things have happened in her past to teach her that. When she witnesses a murder, she relies on herself to figure out what to do. That is until she met SAR specialist Cade Warren when he rescues her after an avalanche! Ultra-reluctant to expose him to any more danger, she has no other choice but to involve him in what’s going on. Cade, on his part, feels he has much in his past to make up for. Wanting to help and be a hero in Leah’s eyes, he goes above and beyond the role of rescuer to help her. Can they escape a killer who’s always one step ahead of them?
Right from the very first sentence, this story puts you smack in the middle of a suspenseful scene & doesn’t let you go until the very last page! This is one book that kept my nose glued to it! Just when I thought they escaped, the killer shows up yet again. With nowhere to hide, they must rely on each other to bring him to justice and find out what he’s after. But playing cat and mouse on the mountain is a dangerous game! They each know the risks involved, but must outrun and outsmart the killer in order to survive. This has all the elements I love; suspense that keeps you on your toes, heart-pounding danger around each corner, two people thrown together by circumstance who must rely on one another, and romance thrown in the midst of it all! I also can’t forget to mention the side characters that make up the rest of this story. The author had me from the start, riding along all the twists and turns second guessing what came next. A great start to the Mountain Cove series set in Alaska; I’m certainly looking forward to reading more!
I felt chilled just reading this book! From the first page, it grabs your attention and you can't quit reading until the last page! The author has you hooked from the beginning! Her characters are carefully crafted as real people that are believable and so is the storyline. Leah has witnessed a murder of her boss in Washington by a detective, of all people, so she runs....to Alaska! She thinks she's safe but the killer follows her there and they both end up in an avalanche! I would be petrified to be in an avalanche!!! The author has really done her research on everything regarding Alaska. You could tell by all the little AND big things that happened in the book. It was very realistic. It was really man vs. nature! Because of Leah's background, she does not trust men and yet, she has to trust Cade with some things because she has a killer after her. Cade is the search and rescue guy who saved her from being buried in the avalanche. Leah thinks she can handle things on her own but it quickly spirals out of control and has to let Cade help her. Cade's family takes her in and she's never been around a "loving" family before. It becomes a race against the clock as the killer has Leah in his sights. Will Cade be able to save her before either the snow or the killer get her? Fantastic suspense! I highly recommend it!
“Buried” had a good storyline and plot. I liked the characters, especially Cade. He really is a perfect hero! I also liked how the bad guy wasn't your typical bad guy. I know I wouldn’t have guessed him to have done what he did if Leah had told me.
I was however slightly disappointed there wasn't as much as action as I had liked. I felt it came in spurts for the first half of the novel, with majority of it being inner dialogue. This isn't a bad thing, but I wanted something more to happen beside what they’re thinking. The action does pick up though for the last quarter of the story and had me on the edge of my seat.
The beginning was utterly fascinating concerning avalanches and even being buried in one (well really all of the SAR roles). I have told quite a few people about it because I found the info so interesting. Granted I hope I never have to actually apply it personally!
Overall, this was a good suspense novel and something different then my usual read! I would recommend it as it was a nice change for me with an awesome hero and scenery. (3.5/4 stars)
*(I did receive this novel from the author in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts expressed are my own and I was not required to write a positive review.)*
I really enjoy books by Elizabeth Goddard they are always a page turning book filled with action, drama , mystery and romance (clean). Be prepared to be sitting on the edge of you seat in this book. Follow Leah to Mountain Cove, Alaska. After she has witnessed the murder of her boss and now a treat to her where can she go. The killer being someone well known how can they get him? So she fleas to Alaska thinking no one would know to follow her there. O was she very wrong they was hot on her trail. Running from them they find her and then there is a avalanche Buried with the bad guy. Cade Warren is there to help with the rescue he does find her but not the bad guy. Leaving there and thinking things are going to be ok., but is it? Cade and Leah both feel feelings for one another but both have things going on in their own lives can they love again can Leah find she can trust someone again? Is there forgiveness in Cades life to move on? Will their Faith in God bring them through? There is a lot more action in this story to get the murderer. Get this book and follow this great suspense. Wonderfully written and loved the characters.
Have you ever witnessed a murder? A murder committed by a decorated member of the police force? You can’t call anyone because it is being set up as if you committed the crime. Where would you go to hide? Well, get a warm beverage, grab a blanket and off we go with Leah Marks, legal investigator to hide in Mountain Cove, Alaska. Leah just saw this decorated police detective kill her boss. But why ??? The only place Leah figures she can hide while she figures out what is happening is a cabin her boss recently inherit in Alaska…. But she guesses wrong….the murderer is on her trail !!! As she runs away into the wilderness, an avalanche buries her !!! What will be Leah’s fate? This story starts out with a wallop and just keeps on being action packed to the very end. The author creates an utterly unbelievable storyline that keeps you riveted from the first to the last word. Vivid characters, drama, mystery, stunning surprises plus a bit of romance twist and turn to a captivating read. Thanks to the author for the book. My opinion is my own.
What a good book! I started this and finished almost on the same day, I just had to see what happened to Leah! There is SOOOOOOOO much snow in this book, just loved that :) I got really annoyed by Snyder after a while, how is this villain so effective at chasing Leah?! No one is that accurate, but he was definitely a maniac that Leah averted expertly until all is resolved. Loved how she calls on God at every opportunity and her heart that she doesn't want to endanger anyone while a killer is on the loose. Also enjoyed the author's note at the end of the book, Goddard enjoys providing her readers with accurate research and heroic characters that have faith, nicely done :) *am hoping to read more about Cade's family in this series, loved them also*
Elizabeth Goddard weaves a non-stop story with Buried in the fictional town of Mountain Cove, Alaska. The plot gripped me from the first page. I was living this nightmare with the main character and experiencing a little panic as the character dealt with her sudden peril. Terrifying!
Half-way through the book, I had my family chuckling over the gasps I kept emitting. One action after another not only kept the pace high (and kept me flipping pages as fast as I could) but twisted the characters into a knot that offered no chance of escape - the mark of excellence in any suspense!
And this suspense is indeed excellent, but the story doesn't stop there. The two main characters had instant chemistry and a palpable romance blooming. Yummy! I would so love to see this story hit the big screen!
“In the Alaskan wilderness, love and danger collide.”
Buried is an exciting Alaskan adventure! Elizabeth Goddard’s imagery grabbed me and pulled me into the story on the very first page! The drama unfolds quickly and kept me engaged throughout the book. I especially enjoyed the setting and the search and rescue aspects of the story, which are described with great vividness and detail.
Full of danger, intrigue, and romance, Buried will delight fans of romantic suspense! I loved this story and look forward to more adventures in Mountain Cove!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. All thoughts expressed in this review are my own and no monetary compensation was received.
After witnessing her boss' murder, legal investigator Leah Marks runs to Alaska to hide from a killer. When her hideaway is discovered, the murderer chases her right into the teeth of an avalanche. Buried alive, Leah prays for rescue when who should appear above her but search and rescue expert, Cade Warren. Cade digs her out and does all he can to make sure she's OK. But, the more questions he asks, the more Leah avoids answering them. Suspicious, he keeps an eye on her, only to realize that someone else is doing the same. As the attempts on Leah's life mount, can Cade win enough of Leah's trust to get the full scoop on what she's running from? Because, she is running, and he has no intention of losing her!
Trust has never come easily to Leah. Growing up in the home she had, few would argue with her on the subject. She works alone and that's the way she likes it but as her nemesis closes in, she knows she needs help. Could Cade be the man she needs to help her bring down a crooked cop?
This story was one thrill ride after another but, fair warning, if one of your greatest fears is being buried alive (like mine is) you may not want to read this book after dark! There is an avalanche at the beginning and one near the end. I learned WAY more about being buried by a river of ice and snow than I ever hoped to know. I definitely recommend this one and I'm going to be looking for books 2 - 6 in the series.
I have read newer books by this author so I started checking out her older LIS Harlequin books. I love "series" books so fortunately I was able to find all of her Mountain Cove books online to read even though this is an older series (2015-2016).
This series is set in Alaska and the author did a beautiful job with the imagery of the area, along with describing the beauty and danger that can lie between the mountains.
Each book in this series has its unique story and characters but they all tied back together with some of the characters mentioned in previous books and were located in the same Mountain Cove, Alaska area.
I really enjoyed this fast paced, suspenseful, romance series and would highly recommend! I read each book in less than a day because they were so fun and easy to read.
This is a "clean" Christian romance about Leah Marks, a woman fleeing a killer after she witnesses the murder of her boss. She hides out in a remote cabin in Alaska and is rescued from an avalanche by a search-and-rescue volunteer, Cade Warren. Cade is immediately drawn into Leah's drama and the pair have to get through multiple dangerous incidents before finally being free of the killer.
I think readers who enjoy the softer romances will like this story. Unfortunately, I didn't enjoy this one. I found all the danger and excitement to be contrived and the romance to be nonexistent and unbelievable. I would say this would fall into a "cozy" romantic suspense genre (if there is such a thing).
Interesting start to a new series. I don't think I've read Elizabeth Goddard before, but I've been planning to for a while now. And I'm glad i picked up this book to read. I was hooked from the very beginning. I wasn't really drawn to the characters, but I did enjoy the plot. From the avalanche to the late night break in at the office. I was thoroughly interested and wanted to find out what happened next. Luckily for me there was a storm going on so I had time to just sit and read. Meaning I finished this book in one setting. Like I said, a great plot. the characters were kind of meh to me. But they didn't kill the story so it all worked out in the end. I'll likely check out the next books in this series, when I get a chance. Recommended? Sure Buy/Borrow? Borrow
When you witness your boss being killed by a well respected local police detective, what can you do but flee to a remote cabin in the mountains. Why a BOLO or something like that being used to track her down wasn't thought of by the main character. Because she has to end up in danger. So that she could be rescued by the handsome but wary search and rescue hero. A woman had done him wrong, cheating on him and making him distrustful. Who will survive this cat and mouse game in this dangerous location?
Leah Marks witnessed the murder of her boss and fled to a cabin in Alaska. The murderer, a police detective, gets close when they are caught in an avalanche. Cade Warren is on the search and rescue team that pulls her free. He knows that she is hiding something and afraid. She tries to pull away and flee again but Cade keeps her under watch. As the killer keeps pursuing and attempting to kill her they draw closer. There is plenty of action here as well as romance, however, it just felt sluggish at times.
I was reccomended this book and it didn't disappoint. It was fast paced filled with action and suspense at every turn. However, with so much happening at EVERY turn it was a little crazy. I did enjoy the characters and liked them. I was happy to find out this was a series as it explained the ending. I still had questions I wanted answered about the storyline in the book so I can only imagine that it will carry on into the next. I will look into the sequel.
I appreciated how the avalanche survival information was woven throughout the storyline without bogging it down. Leah's unwillingness to go to the police combined well with Cade's trust issues (both of which made sense given their backgrounds). My biggest issue was that the encounters with the villain at the end starting feeling a bit melodramatic. He survived a few too many close calls for my tastes.
Author Elizabeth Goddard keeps the reader engaged from the first sentence. Action, mystery, intrigue, suspense and love are all found in this story. The descriptions are so good that I actually felt cold while reading about the snow. A great read. I received a complimentary copy of the book. No review was required.
Having grown up in avalanche country and knowing both survivors and non-survivors, I wanted to see how this background could foster a romance and mystery. I wasn't disappointed. I enjoyed this book because the main character, Cade, is a Christian who emulates and shares his strong belief in God and His merciful love even as he navigates through a world of evil and unbelief.
