When uni gives you a dreadfully long reading list and people just generally stress you to death, proceed reading manga and ignore everything.

That is my motto these days anyway.

Sekaiichi just calms and entertains me in the best way possible. I love the characters and the story, especially that it can make me laugh. The story is mostly realistic, and I do appreciate that we can see a normal work day in an editor's life. It's difficult and demanding, especially if you have a boss like Takano-san. I've noticed this duality in his behaviour: I think he acts differently at work. He's very strict (to keep up appearances), but at the same time helpful and supportive. One of my favourite things about him is when he smacks Onodera's head with a newspaper when he's daydreaming. xD

This volume is also about jealousy, and it's safe to say that all the characters feel it in some way, whether they realise it or not. Seeing your crush with someone else will always stir those kinds of feelings. However, Yokozawa is the only one who openly admits it, and even threats Ritsu.
Ritsu's transfer to the literature department is also brought up, and safely avoided, thanks to the mangaka he manages.

We also get to see glimpses from 10 years before, and the library scene was very nice. Looking forward to the next volume, whenever that might be!

Ritsu is determined not to fall for Masamune again. He is in such denial in this volume. He even gets jealous over a dinner meeting! But not everyone likes his behavior as he is repeatedly warned away from hurting Masamune again. But Ritsu feels it is he that was betrayed. Lots of flashbacks to their high school days to begin to uncover the truth. I liked seeing how they were together and wished there was more.

I cannot make up my mind about Masamune's intentions. He keeps assaulting Ritsu's lips a lot here! But is he sincere? I think so since he seems to have a jealous streak too...

Not much happens. Lots of pointless filler to me. I hope the next volume picks up the pace.

¡Damelo a mi!)

Okay, I just love this series. Yes, this is as ridiculous as Junjo Romantica, but it's also as much fun as that series, and it's cute and adorable and really, really sweet. Considering how much I seem to crave this sort of thing at the moment I haven't read enough fluff in the last weeks months years.

Second verse same as the first. Major trigger warnings abound.

I love this volume because it's where Ritsu is complimented by his mangaka for being a good editor and he's so flattered by it because he so rarely gets compliments and it makes me cry every fucking time.

In Volume 2, as the mangaka counts down the days until Ritsu Onedera falls in love with his high school sweet heart and, now, boss, Masamune Takano (the clock is at 270 days by the end of this book), I'm left wondering just how long she can keep this story going. Yes, volume 2 continues to be interesting, but fault lines also start to appear.

Just how dense can Onedera be? The lack of self-insight and honesty with oneself starts to grate in this volume. That said, just what kind of uptight emotional zombie is Takano? He needs to stop playing games and have a heart to heart with Onedera. Moreover, Takano is clearly starting to break in his resistance to Onedera because several times he forces Onedera into intimate situations. But these only become more fodder for Onedera to tell himself “He’s just messing with me,” adding to his mantra on self deception. Really?

And then there's two other lingering story threads that are waiting to go off, A) that Onedera did something heinous to Takano in high school, so much so that a friend, Yokozawa, had to help pick up Takano’s shattered emotional life, and B) something about Onedera’s childhood engagement to a girl, meaning that, improbably, he already has a fiancé.

Sigh.

On the upside, I ordered volume 3 so I'm still engaged with the story. But the negatives are accumulating. The rough, jagged artwork, while very effective in terms of visual storytelling, is starting to lose its appeal. Just how long do I want to look at these ugly drawings of guys? And they are ugly. Occasionally Onedera or Takano or someone else is drawn in an attractive way, but the slashing lines used for just about everything, from hair to features to clothes, and the awkward jutting of limbs and gangly elbows and knees are no longer novel or interesting. Unlike a Giacometti sculpture, these attenuated figure drawings don't command attention or speak much about anything. I don't hate them, yet. But they're getting old.

There is something about this series that is so addicting for me. I can't help but read the volumes within a day, if not a single sitting, and I ended up buying all of the available volumes in English for me to binge read. This volume builds up on the greatness of the first volume, and you can start to see how Masamune Takano is starting to break down the walls of Ritsu Onodera. I would even say that the manga is better than the anime, and that's why I am loving it so much!

The plot of this volume focuses on Ritsu's manga career and what he wants for the future, whilst showing us a lot of his past with Masamune. I am really invested in the story, and the characters, that I can't wait to finish this review and start reading volume 3! I really hope I'll be able to survive not reading this series for 1 and a bit days after finishing volume 3!

I would really recommend this series if you want to get into yaoi manga or just haven't read it!

After reading the first book, I was very excited to get started reading this one. I like that it had a lot of throw backs to Takano and Onodera’s high school days. You start to see parallels in their adult lives and the hints of their personal selves that still linger from their childhood. I especially like them meeting at the library by chance in present time, it’s a nice parallel to all the high school Library scenes we’ve seen so far in the series.

For those of you looking for some actual action, there’s at least 3 scenes of it in this volume- which is fantastic. Although there’s one scene in particular I’m not sure I understand why Onodera is reciprocating, especially with how uncomfortable he is... If you’ve seen the anime, i think this scene there makes a lot more sense there.

Anyway—looking forward to Vol 3! Onward!

The World's Greatest First Love 2
5/5 stars

Holy shit these are so addictive. I love them so much, no joke, I get paid tomorrow and I'm probably going to buy the rest of the series (or at least what we carry)

The characters and plot are basically the same but I adored the flashbacks to when they were first together in this one.

I am still LIVING for this art style, and the angst. I literally haven't stopped thinking about the series since I finished the first volume, the addiction is bad.

I also loved the progression of the couple in this one and how vulnerable they each are around one another. (Takano less so, but still) And the plot delving into Onodera possibly leaving the company was interesting too.

Overall:
I am officially trash for this series.

More like 3.5. The writing is very engaging but the art style is still very distracting. Tons of panels that make me ask "what is anatomy?"

The thread of sexual assault, coercion, and rape continues in this volume. It's supposed to be A-OK because Onodera really loves him and just won't admit it, but that's obvious bullshit.

I can tell this series is going to be riddled with miscommunication and misunderstandings, combined with Onodera's selective amnesia. Which doesn't bother me at this point because I like the setting and characters. The story overall is fun, though soured by lack of consent in all things.

If you don’t like the “miscommunication causes obstacles for the main couple” trope, steer clear of this book because there’s literally nothing else.

I’m still confused that this is a book about adults but there’s a lot of juvenile tropes flying around. Also it’s just creepy when someone cries and tries to get away and begs to stop during sex but apparently that’s just someone being overwhelmed by their strong emotions and confusion??? Idgaf, if someone does that the sex stops. I don’t get it.

The publishing aspect is cool. It’s a neat insight into something I know absolutely nothing about.

Pretty good. Unlike on the show, I find myself more invested in the main couple’s relationship from when they were still in school versus the one they have in the present but that might just be because I’m less invested in the work business in this volume. I do think Ritsu should transfer departments because he would enjoy it more and it would be better for his career but that wouldn’t be the romance manga choice so he can’t. No happy literary career for this guy, only deeply exhausting work in the sparkly manga dungeon with his pushy tyrant boss/ex.
