American icon Joe Kubert and Italian writer Claudio Nizzi collaborated on the exhilarating western The Lonesome Rider at the turn of the century--and this standalone graphic novel is now available to a wider English-language audience! Tex hunts down four ruthless killers who massacred a peaceful farming family, using his detective skills, ranger's experience, and brute force to track down his targets! However, each killer is cunning and skilled in his own right! This is the first U.S. edition of a graphic novel that was drawn by Kubert in the early 2000s!
Λοιπόν, αυτή δεν είναι η πρώτη επαφή με τον Τεξ Γουίλερ, τον τρομερό Ρέιντζερ από το Τέξας. Έχω διαβάσει αρκετές (έγχρωμες) ιστορίες του, χάρη στο σούπερ περιοδικό "Μίστερ Νο και οι... άλλοι". Όλες, λίγο έως πολύ, με είχαν αφήσει ευχαριστημένο, αλλά και... πεινασμένο, γιατί ήθελα περισσότερα. Και να που τώρα χόρτασα (και με το παραπάνω!) μια κλασική ιστορία Γουέστερν, στα χνάρια των καλύτερων σπαγγέτι. Δράση, βία, υπερβολές, φοβερά σκηνικά, μαυρίλα και σαπίλα, τι άλλο θέλει κανείς;
A lot of what I’m about to say is going to be in praise of Kubert who’s page designs, composition and story telling I think are all nigh perfect. He never gets too fancy and puts his brilliance for story telling above the plot, everything he does is in service of the story. Every single panel conveys exactly what it’s supposed to, it’s ridiculous how clear everything is. Even panel choices contribute to the storytelling. Kubert knows exactly when to utilize landscape/widescreen panels for important actions, vertical panels for vertical movements, shifting the “camera” back for a row of panels to highlight how empty the West is and using 4 panels in a row the illustrate rapid action or though are only some of the pure comic storytelling goodness in Kubert’s work.
Kubert’s illustration is also incredible. He uses lots of lines for detail and texture. You can totally see his influence on people like Neal Adams. The figure drawing and backgrounds are always dynamic. Each scene is so alive because of the gritty saloons and personality dripping from each cowboy on the page.
The story too I think is pretty great. Sure, it’s pretty standard Western stuff but it’s structured in such a way that you go from A to B to C really fluidly. I could totally see how this was serialized but the way it’s collected in the black and white edition I own has no breaks in it’s presentation but that’s fine. It flows well if you read it non-stop but there are also nice, clear points to take breaks.
This was actually a lot better than I thought it was going to be. I knew Kubert was a renowned cartoonist but I really wasn’t expecting to be as blown away as I was. You can tell he’s so comfortable with telling stories in the comics medium that each page could stand as it’s own comics masterpiece.
Westerns are a tough genre. It's hard to do a straight western without it feeling a little bit played out. On the other hand, I like westerns, and this one looked wonderful, as you would expect from Joe Kubert. Thus, Nizzi wasn't required to re-invent the genre. He just had to keep pace with Kubert for Tex would be a successful book.
Fortunately, he was up to the task. Tex Willer comes upon his friends' ranch, and finds the entire family murdered. He sets out to get vengeance on the killers. It's an old plot, but it works for this book. What makes it work, to me, is that the four killers split up, which kept the story from getting bogged down in any one western cliche. It moved around, as each killer was encountered in a slightly different setting - although the notion that two of the killers had corrupt brothers who would protect them was a bit redundant.
The Indian setting was well done, I thought, although the ending might be a little too neat for some readers. But I'm an optimist, so I went with it.
Tex is a pretty straight-forward, square-jawed western hero. He was pretty smart and resourceful. However, his ability to have his foes constantly miss him when they had an open shot and to survive an unsurvivable fall were a little distracting. Nevertheless, I had a good time chasing across the western frontier with Joe Kubert lighting the way.
Kubertov stil savrseno se uklopio u Texov svijet. Dinamika americkog superherojskog stripa i tipicna Texovska priča o tvrdoj pravdi, časti i osveti linearno se raspliću dotičući se svih klasičnih mjesta žanra.
One of the best Wild West graphic novels available in English
Tex Willer is a legend in many countries, although, surprisingly, not very well known in USA. He should be. The story (Claudio Nizzi) is very good and the drawings of Joe Kubert are phenomenal. Just like a movie. Actually, better than a movie.
This was originally created in 2005, but now now it's collected by Dark Horse. I wasn't aware of Tex Willer comics before, but I see that the character was created in 1948. This is a great western, and we don't get many like this in comics anymore. In some ways it reminds me of Doug Wildy's Rio, but his stories were more episodic. This is much more cohesive and intended for long-form storytelling. Plus, it's Joe Kubert art!
