I'm not exactly sure when I fell in love with books. Probably on my mother's knee listening to her read Dr. Seuss to me. I do remember that I was barely old enough to cross the street by myself when I discovered the delights of the local library. Could anything be more wonderful than spending summer days surrounded by stacks of Nancy Drew mysteries? Over the years I fell in love with Victoria Holt, Jane Austen, Agatha Christie, and J.R.R. Tolkien just to name a few. I read poetry, essays, biographies, and plays. In fact, I read anything I could get my hands on.

Years later (no, I'm not admitting how many) I'm still an avid reader, and my tastes are still as varied as they were in my youth, which I suppose helps to explain why I enjoy writing regency historicals under the name of Deborah Raleigh, as well as my contemporary paranormals as Alexandra Ivy. For now that is enough to keep me busy, but who knows what the future might hold!

I do have a few other loves in my life besides reading and writing, the most important being my unbelievably patient husband, David, and my two sons, Chance and Alexander. Without their constant support and belief in me, I never could have been able to follow my dreams. They are truly my heroes.

Three and a half
I'd actually forgotten that I had this on my kindle so decided it was high time to get back to this extraordinary world the author has created.
This prequel is about Dr Angela Locke, an amazing genetic scientist and Niko a sentinel on a mission. Niko has to pose as a professor in order to get close to Angela . Angela has no idea that she's the target of a psychopath sentinel and her life is in danger. They clearly both want to heat up the sheets from the moment they meet ! Still I found their romance worked and I liked them together, Niko was a typical alpha male but Angela was no lightweight!
This sexy and fast paced (albeit )short story was a good introduction to the Sentinel world and I'm glad I finally read it
This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair

➕ What I liked :

Some tiny parts of the world-building.

“Experienced” heroine.

Some tiny little parts here and there of the plot were somewhat interesting.

➖ What I disliked:

Even for a novella the plot and romance was very rushed.

The romance and the plot but also the main characters needed more depth and development because it was lacking and thin even for a novella.

The romantic build-up and chemistry is very rushed and lacking … and what little there is feels very forced and based only on the physical…. especially from the heroines side of things.

Even for the genre (Paranormal Romance) things are way too OTT.

Too much going on all over the place for a novella.

Contradicting.
(In everything from the heroines and heroes personalities to the romance.)

Confusing.

Jumbled.

Plot-holes.

Believability/plausibility issues.
(Especially that the heroine did not know or surmised that she was a high-blood…. And for being a very smart and highly educated woman the heroine sure acted dumb about many things and made strange decisions…. But also many many other things in the plot.)

Formulaic in the character description/visual appearance/character choice about both the main characters.
(Hero= tall, muscular, very handsome…. And heroine: slender and pretty etc.)

This book is the prequel to the book series Sentinels by Alexandra Ivy. I am a fan of her Guardians of Eternity series and have really enjoyed following that series. This series though completely different shows promise to be good.

The book introduces us to a very fascinating world where there are freaks (high-blood), necromancers, psychics, witches who live mostly in Valhala and their differences are due to genetic mutations. These differences have given them different powers of varying degrees.

The prequel is about Dr Anegla Locke, a brilliant young genetic scientist and Niko a sentinel on a mission. Niko's mission involves him posing as a professor to get close to Angela who is in sights of a psychopath sentinel. They are both attracted to each other from the moment they meet. I liked them together, Niko was very much an alpha male but Angela held her own.

Quibbles: I would liked a bit more Niko and Anegla's meetings as flashbacks or memories and Angela's back story which was quite limited in the book. I do think it is quite hard to keep a balance when starting a new book in relation to the setting/ back story, just giving enough information to tantalize the audience without giving away too much. And in the case of this book the backstory took a second role to the overall plot. I would liked a bit more information about the sentinels and the Valhala because it felt quite a few unanswered questions about how it all came to be. Though I am not complaining about the book being more focused on the protagonists.

I enjoyed this book. There isn't much else to say since the book is quite short without giving away everything. Overall I think this book was a interesting start to a new series by Miss Ivy and I'm looking forward to reading more from it.

** Read as part of Predatory **

This one is an introduction to The Sentinels #0.5 series. It features Nikolo a Sentinel and Angela. The set up is interesting. I’m not found of the quick hook up’s. The couple featured have only known each other for a few weeks, they are thrown together, with not much dating happening; before they hook up. I wasn’t fully feeling the connection between these two even though you can clearly see the desires and sexual tensions.

Out of Control gives us heartache, betrayal, and surprises. It had plenty of action, humor, and lust. This novella was enjoyable!

Narrator Performance: 3/5

This was my first Alexandra Ivy read and unfortunately I have to say that I was disappointed in it. That could be because of it's length though. Sometimes novelists have trouble putting together a well rounded story within the limited amount of words that novellas have. Maybe it was the narrator. I didn't really appreciate her style so that could have effected the way I felt. Whatever it was it's not enough to deter me from trying to read Ivy again. She's written lots of books and a number of my book friends enjoy her writing. The story wasn't bad, it just didn't live up to my expectations.

More about the narrator...
Like I said I wasn't super thrilled with the narrator's performance of this. Her pace was kind of stilted IMO. She also made like no effort to differentiate the characters by changing her speech pattern or the timber of her voice.

I've read The Sentinels series by Alexandra Ivy, so I was wondering how I managed to miss this prequel novella, Out of Control. I can say, reading it first or reading it after Born in Blood, it still is a wonderfully entertaining story.

There is something special about Angela Locke, she has an uncanny ability to work on the cellular level. Angela's ability has drawn the attention of a psychotic Sentinel. How can she, a mere mortal, come up against the powers of a Sentinel? She can't! Luckily she won't have to face it alone, the electrifying professor Dr. Nikolo Bartrev isn't just someone she's been crushing/lusting on but another Sentinel sent to capture the rogue.

Out of Control is a fast, fun and paranormal romance with lots of action in and out of bed from start to finish. A great introduction in the Sentinel world, Out of Control gives you just a taste but leaves you wanting more.

I received this copy of Out of Control from Kensington Books - Zebra Books in exchange for an honest review.

Interesting characters and a series that definitely has potential but this short novella just needed... more. They came together too quickly and the story was rushed.

I don't know... it just didn't work for me...

I might read the first book in the series though... it has an interesting premise.

Out of Control was an enjoyable introduction to a paranormal series featuring a romance between a scientist and a powerful Sentinel.

Angela Locke has had a crush on her professor, Dr. Nikolo Bartrev, for weeks but the sexy professor has ignored all of her signals that she's interested. When Angela is attacked, Niko is the one who saves her drawing her into the world of Sentinels and other beings with extraordinary powers. But as danger closes in, will Niko be strong enough to keep Angela safe?

At the start of this book Niko has been in town for six weeks and Angela has had limited interactions with him mostly related to her work at the university. During that time she developed a crush on him which he didn't notice. After Angela is attacked by a woman who escaped from Valhalla, the home of the Sentinels and others, Niko tells her the truth about who he is and why the woman is after her. Angela struggles with Niko's lies which was understandable but eventually she begins to warm up to him. The confrontation with the woman when she comes after Angela again was well done and I did enjoy how that played out. I do feel like Niko didn't make up enough for deceiving Angela and I didn't love the ending with how Angela had to give up so much.

Overall Out of Control was a good start to the series and I will definitely continue with the series soon.

The Story:

A good introductory tale to a series. I have issues with the connotation and number of times the word “freak” was used but I did listen with my 2023 ears when this was written in 2014. I’m not sure I will continue the series because I’m sure that kind of language will continue and it really did hit me hard.

The prequel to The Sentinel series is one hot and erotic novella. As we are being brought back into the world of the Sentinel’s and introduced to characters that we’ll no doubt see in the upcoming series, Alexandra Ivy tells a tale mixed with love, fear and a future filled with people who we will undoubtedly fall in love with ourselves.
As the series starts, we meet Angela Locke and Nikolo Bartrev. Both are drawn to each other but Dr. Bartrev has a mission to fulfill. Friends and Norms have been brutally murdered and it is up to him to stop the person responsible. He’s never compromised his duties, until Angela. A “freak” who has no idea of the powers that she holds within her.
Angela cannot stop thinking or dreaming of Niko but is convinced that his interest in her is just about her work in the lab. She’s a nerd and there is no way a man like him would ever look twice at her. Then, feeling betrayed by him in his quest to capture and kill his prey, Angela finds herself in his arms and his bed. As the story unfolds and Angela is drawn into the world of The Sentinel’s, she has a lot of truths to face. Being a stubborn, strong woman, it’s going to take a lot for Niko to get her to accept who and what she is. Valhalla is the only place to keep her safe and she refuses to see her gifts.
I am always drawn into the world that Alexandra Ivy weaves for us. She filled this Novella with so much action that you are surprised when the story is brought to a close as soon as it is. I’m not surprised at all that she wrote such an interesting introduction to The Sentinel’s nor am I surprised that she completely draws you into their world so quickly. Her writing has always been dramatic, flowing and filled with erotic interludes that keep you wanting more.

Cheyenne 4 STARS

I am a huge paranormal romance fan and I loved this novella for Alexandra Ivy’s newest series. From the start I was hooked and read the entire novella in one sitting without putting it down. It is not your average paranormal type romance with vampires or werewolves, but this time it deals with witches, psychic, necromancers and Sentinels. It was a different twist than other paranormal books and I think that is one of the reasons why I enjoyed it so much.
Angela is well aware that the high bloods, or what some call freaks, exist. What she doesn’t know though is that her current research has made her the target of a rogue freak, one that doesn’t care who she kills to get her way. She also doesn’t know that the sexy Niko is more than he seems. Together not only does the sexual chemistry between them cause some explosive and hot as hell sex but they will be the ones to bring that rogue down.
Niko is one of the top Sentinels and is at times cold hearted when it comes to getting the job done. That cold heartedness of his should have kept him from falling for Angela but he wants her and will protect her with his life. He never wanted Angela to be hurt. He wanted her to be his.
I can’t wait to see how this series is going to play out. This novella has me hooked and wanting more so I pray that the next book will release soon. Paranormal and Alexandra Ivy fans need to pick this one up because I have the feeling this is the start to another great series.

Ph.D student Angela Locke has a crush on her sexy professor, Dr. Nikolo Bartrev but it seems as he is not interested in her. When she is nearly kidnapped, she learns he’s actually a Sentinel with extraordinary powers, and she has to join forces with him to catch a psychopath.

this is a short but good story which introduces us to the world of the series "Sentinels", where there are freaks (high-blood), necromancers, psychics, witches who live mostly in Valhala and their differences are due to genetic mutations. These differences have given them different powers of varying degrees.

I liked how the story developed and that you can really feel the attratction between Nico and Angela. but I would have loved to see more about how they first met and to learn more about them as characters.
we also got only a short time with them together as a couple - which could have developed in something really serious or eventually just be a fling, although there are serious feelings involved.

the whole world is introduced to us but there is a lot of information missing, which I assume will be told in the next books. nevertheless I would have loved for this book to be a bit longer and a tad more extensive.

all in all, it was a nice short read and an interesting start for a new series.

I realize that this novella is an introduction to a series, but I have to say the lack of relevant information creates more confusion than anticipation. Everything from beginning to end just happens too fast and with very little detail.

Shortly into the book we discover that Niko has been watching Angela for quite some time, and that the couple has been friendly for weeks. The problem is, we know this only because it is what we are told. Their initial getting-to-know-you period happens entirely off-page before the book begins. Because this is the way the story is presented, it feels to the reader as though the H/h have just met, and their connection and insta-love makes little sense.

I liked the concept, but there is simply not enough attention spent on world building and character development. It feels like you’ve just been dumped in this new place, and that despite having no idea where you are, you should already know how to get where you are going.

The over all impression that I am left with is that this book is more an outline for a novel than a finished piece.

For the sake of full disclosure it must be stated that I received this book, free of charge, from Netgalley.

This is Book 0.5 of The Sentinels Series and I have to admit, it’s the first book I ever read by Alexandra Ivy. So happy I just found another great author to add to my favorites list!

It’s the story of Niko, a hunter Sentinel and Angela, a promising Ph.D. student. Niko has been hunting an escaped psychopath and poses as a professor at Angela’s university. He’s been suspecting that the escapee is out to kidnap Angela. Niko initially plans to use her as bait, but their strong mutual attraction makes it more and more difficult for him to focus on his duties.

The storyline is complex and well-developed and Alexandra Ivy’s writing is amazing. I loved the mysterious new Sentinel world. Alexandra Ivy knows how to keep you turning the pages well past bedtime.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Out of Control. It's a captivating novella with lovable and believable characters, sweet romance and hot passion. I’m looking forward to reading the full length books in this series.

Angela Locke is a Ph.D student and Nikolo Bartrev is a consulting professor. Or so she’s told. For six weeks she’s drooled over him as he visits her lab daily. When she finds out he’s actually a high-blood, a Sentinel or, the not-so-nice term, freak and he’s been using her as bait, well…to put it mildly, she’s not pleased. But neither is Niko. Never, in all his time as a hunter, has he let himself get distracted by anything. Not even a woman. But Angela is different and not just because she’s also a high-blood (which she refuses to believe), but because he wants her. Badly. But has he screwed it all up by keeping secrets from her? Only time will tell.

I love this story and the fact that it’s the start of a new series delights me. Paranormal, humor, steaminess and danger combined with a wonderful new supernatural world living side-by-side with the norms and delicious characters. I can’t wait for more stories in this series. This story is fairly short, but it’s enough to whet the appetite for more, more, more.

This was a great read! It's short enough to get through it in one night, with a glass or two of wine!

drinking wine photo drinkingwine_zps225bbc43.gif

Angela is a student scientist going for her doctorate. She is mooning over "Professor Hottie" Niko. Niko is a Sentinel on the hunt for a murderer. When he is with Angela, he finds he will do anything to protect her.

I read the first book in this series & even though this one supposedly falls first, it could be read anytime. It's a fast full story unlike the prequels that leave you hanging or just expand on a specific character. I am really glad she is starting another series & not dragging on and on with her other series.

What a great start to a new series by Alexandra Ivy! Though it's a novella, it pulls you in quickly with fast paced story telling. Angela is a smart student and has a little crust on her Prof. Niko. She is kidnapped by someone who wants her help, but the person is crazed and not really human. Niko is a Sentinel hunter and was using Angela as bait because of powers she doesn't even know that she has, but otherwordly beings can sense. Niko knows that he has to save Angela and he really does start to care for her. This story also has some strong secondary characters whom I am sure are going to get their own story is this exciting new series.

I was given an ARC of this story by NetGalley for an honest review.

0.5 Of the Sentinels series.

After Dylan a psychotic member of the Sentinels escapes from a private facility, Niko is sent to recapture her before she can kidnap a budding geneticist. But when his emotions become compromised by his attraction to Angela his mission turns from capture the fugitive to protect the loved one.

Took me awhile to figure the backstory enough to understand what was going on. The whole High-blood/Valhalla/Sentinel organizational thing was oddly confusing. Might have helped if I’d read any of the main books, but this was the beginning story.

Footnote: 1) I read this originally in the ‘Predatory’ anthology.

Fave scene: Angela discovering the contents of her hastily packed bag.

Highbloods are people with gifts, some can blend in and some cannot. Dylan is one who can't and she wants so badly to be normal that she goes on a killing spree to get to Angela. She is a scientist who works with cell manipulation....she is also a highblood but she doesn't know it. Niko is posing as a profressor but he is a sentinel who is on Dylan's trail but gets caught up with his feelings for Angela.

This was ok...about what you would expect from a novella. I did like Niko and Angela and I thought the idea of the highbloods sounds pretty interesting.

Dr. Nikolo Bartrev,, her new sexy professor - who checks in with her each evening... he is a Sentinel sent to protect her as a crazed >>>> has escaped Valhala and they predict she is on her way to Dr. Locke, so she can fix her strange looks...
