Sixth-grader Josh Cotter never wanted to live in Rock Hollow. The town was just too small and too strange especially since his eccentric grandmother lived there. When his parents divorced, he wasn't given a choice; his mother moved the two of them to Rock Hollow aka "the middle of nowhere." All he really wants is to move home.As if the weird little town and the school bully weren't bad enough...Josh accidentally discovers something dark and dangerous lurks in Rock Hollow. It figures Rock Hollow would harbor a monster. As funny as it is scary, readers of "Tales from Lovecraft Middle School" or the works of Bruce Coville and R L Stine will enjoy visiting Rock Hollow (but they won't want to live there!)
Check out my young adult novel, "Summer Stranger Than Fiction"! Though it's based on one summer in my high school career...my parents never had their own variety show--to my knowledge. It's funny...well, the people who inspired it and I think so...give it a read and leave an honest review!
A couple years ago, I published a scary & funny middle grade reader. Check out "Shadowangel" and write a review! (It will have a sequel if my hubbie has anything to say about it) In 2007, I published a collection of my stories, "Seeking the Link," Most of those were published in magazines first. (All three are available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Title Source 360!) They are in OCLC Worldcat now, a fact that could excite only a librarian!
I live in a 180 year old farm house in Dayton with my nun & cow lovin' husband Trent and our small furry children. We see too many movies & I read and write fiction in what time I can make. I am a Children's Librarian (not just a "goodreads librarian") between my moments with books.
I have written reviews for every professional review journal in existence (Name one...go ahead...yep, I wrote for them! Still do!) I'm approaching the 2500 books reviewed mark (in print, Goodreads not included).
I was on the 2007 Newbery committee (look at my friends for most of the committee :-) We're the ones who chose "Higher Power of Lucky" Yeah! Scrotum! I was on Newbery again in 2012. We picked "Dead End in Norvelt" this time around. Yeah...um nosebleeds and dead, old ladies??? AND I was just on the 2021 Newbery Committee! "When you Trap a Tiger" Yeah mythical tiger spirits!
I am working on getting several books published. Wish me luck! (None of them have zombies in them...oh wait, one might. Dang!)
It is always enjoyable to discover a new young adult book to try and when it has aspects of Weirdness (yes with a capital W) and some creepiness, then it's right up my alley. Shadowangel definitely qualifies. Of course I'm an adult (most days) but it's always nice to step back and relax into earlier years. I wish books like this existed when I was young.
The children in the story, Josh and Marylis are sixth and fifth graders who have some typical modern problems, family issues, bullies, etc. but then they have one potentially huge one that is not typical, something unknown that seems to exist in the night. I'm not going to say much more about it as I don't want to spoil the plot but it does make for a good read. It is not gorey but it has moments of fright for the characters and wonder for the reader.
One section I enjoyed describes a "research" mission by our "heroes".
Josh had to admit that he really liked being in old libraries. Not only were they guaranteed cool on a hot afternoon, but they were also full of crackle-paged books and the powdery, earthy scent of aging paper. His mom called that smell "musty." Josh always thought of it as the scent of knowledge. (p 58)
Can you tell that the author is also a librarian!
There were many sentences that made me smile throughout the book, phrases that were just so apt. And as I finished, I wondered, will there be a sequel to learn more about the goings on in Rock Hollow?
I really liked this book when I read it, but it's been so long since I've read it, I can't write a review. I do remember thinking, "Why doesn't a big publishing house pick this up?" Maybe I should reread it and get back to you.
