Rei Hiroe (広江 礼威, Hiroe Rei, born 5 December 1972) is a Japanese manga artist who is best known for his latest manga, Black Lagoon. When he is working on doujin comics he goes by the name Red Bear and TEX-MEX. Hiroe's manga were originally published by Kadokawa Shoten in the 1990s but none were complete. As a response Hiroe transferred to Shogakukan in the early 2000s, where all of his manga released before Black Lagoon were republished and re-released.
For me there wasn't years and years of wait between vols 9 and 10 because I started reading the series just this year, so that doesn't affect my opinion one way or another. This volume felt less intense. Not just because there wasn't that much shooting/action in this one but for example Revy conversed normally almost all the time. So little cussing, what? Hahaha. The new arc seems okay but I'm a bit puzzled by Jane, she didn't seem this way when she was introduced. Well, let's see what her deal... The storytelling was jumpier in this one than previously, the long break etc. might've played a role. Jumpy nonetheless. Also, Hiroe seems to want to make Rock a compelling character but I'm not so sure he is succeeding. His thoughts and actions are kept too cryptic.
Finally, after a few long years of waiting since Vol. 9, I finally get to read an official print! I never even finished the fan-scans because I'd rather read the real thing. Now that I've got it (I got a Kobo version for my desktop), I'm glad I waited.
Anyway. It's a good start to a new arc. One thing I noticed by the time I finished this volume is that it seems to be a bit tamer in comparison to the other volumes. Revy hardly seems to swear, which was especially weird. Maybe it was the version I read, though I doubt that. Most of the action involves sitting behind a computer, and I'll admit I couldn't understand some of the techno-babble thrown around, but it wasn't enough for me to lose interest or lose track of what was going on. Still, despite it being tamer, the quality is still the same, and that's what counts.
I liked this arc's parallels with Rock's opening arc, when an undercover hacker working for the Chinese government is set up by 'Greenback' Jane and then ditched by her own government. I'm glad Rock still maintains his humanity even after all this time in Roanapur. It keeps the uniqueness of this series intact.
Also, on a side note: Jane is still a total bitch.
FINALLY, we get continuation in this exciting, action-packed, thrilling saga that is Black Lagoon. There was a 5-year duration between vol.9 and 10, where fans of this manga series have been waiting and pining for a the new volume... And for a good reason. Rei Hiroe have been busy with the production of the anime adaptation, for which he had to take an hiatus from the manga to get the anime just right. And for that he stayed so long away from the manga, that he was afraid to disappoint his fanbase... So he spent a long time writing and rewriting, drawing and redrawing, so that he could come back with quality.
With all that said, this volume is a good comeback. It's drawn beautifully, and the transition from manually drawn to digital, is unnoticeable through the volume. It starts with a new typical Black Lagoon story-arc, but yet entices the reader to read more. I'm looking forward to the next volumes, because I belive that Rei Hiroe is back with a new view of things that will bring new depths to the story.
It's been so long! You've returned to rescue me from the tragedy of the end of 'Blade of the Immortal!' Ugh, Benny, I don't like your girlfriend, I never did. Dutch, I need more of you in my life! Rock and Revy, I can't even begin to elucidate my feelings for you both! That being said, I miss Balalaika and Chang. But I'm so pleased to see Bao again. Sniffle. I'm so happy you've returned!
All that being said, I'm slightly confused, so I'll probably have to start the series over and reread it all. Again.
Don't judge me. Revy is totally in my top twenty whoa babies anime edition.
*edit*
Now that I've reread the whole thing, after the Roberta arc, this one feels a little anticlimactic. BUT we shall see.
At last! Volume 10! And it's great. Super-great. However it's a wee bit of a tease, being the first part of what I'm guessing is gonna be a two-part story. Still, we get a great new character (Feng) who makes an interesting comparison with Rock as being someone who was abandoned by her employers. A fun and menacing trio of "bros", your typical Black Lagoon gallows humor and some realistic cyber-espionage. Starts off a wee bit slow but delivers in terms of character. My only real complaint is that Dutch is absent for practically this entire volume...that, and who in the bloody hell knows when volume 11 is due.
Good book. We get some character development in Rock, who's dealing with the fall out of Roberta's latest visit, while Greenback Jane reappears. We also meet our cover heroine, who reminds us of Rock, a bit.
Nice to see the scene where Revy is confirmed to have been prison bisexual made it through, as well as her threatening to make Jane her bitch. *lol*
