The simple but sage words of Dr. Seuss have helped many a child (and grownup) along the complicated road of life. For those who need reminders, here is a collection of some of the good doctor's wisest and wittiest sayings, on subjects as varied as "Equality and Justice" and "Facing Up to Adversity" to "The Art of Eating" and "The First Nerd"! A perfect gift for all occasions, ideal for sharing among generations--now with a "gift tag" on the jacket flap for consumers to personalize!
Theodor Seuss Geisel was born 2 March 1904 in Springfield, Massachusetts. He graduated Dartmouth College in 1925, and proceeded on to Oxford University with the intent of acquiring a doctorate in literature. At Oxford he met Helen Palmer, who he wed in 1927. He returned from Europe in 1927, and began working for a magazine called Judge, the leading humor magazine in America at the time, submitting both cartoons and humorous articles for them. Additionally, he was submitting cartoons to Life, Vanity Fair and Liberty. In some of his works, he'd made reference to an insecticide called Flit. These references gained notice, and led to a contract to draw comic ads for Flit. This association lasted 17 years, gained him national exposure, and coined the catchphrase "Quick, Henry, the Flit!"
In 1936 on the way to a vacation in Europe, listening to the rhythm of the ship's engines, he came up with And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street, which was then promptly rejected by the first 43 publishers he showed it to. Eventually in 1937 a friend published the book for him, and it went on to at least moderate success.
During World War II, Geisel joined the army and was sent to Hollywood. Captain Geisel would write for Frank Capra's Signal Corps Unit (for which he won the Legion of Merit) and do documentaries (he won Oscar's for Hitler Lives and Design for Death). He also created a cartoon called Gerald McBoing-Boing which also won him an Oscar.
In May of 1954, Life published a report concerning illiteracy among school children. The report said, among other things, that children were having trouble to read because their books were boring. This inspired Geisel's publisher, and prompted him to send Geisel a list of 400 words he felt were important, asked him to cut the list to 250 words (the publishers idea of how many words at one time a first grader could absorb), and write a book. Nine months later, Geisel, using 220 of the words given to him published The Cat in the Hat, which went on to instant success.
In 1960 Bennett Cerf bet Geisel $50 that he couldn't write an entire book using only fifty words. The result was Green Eggs and Ham. Cerf never paid the $50 from the bet.
Helen Palmer Geisel died in 1967. Theodor Geisel married Audrey Stone Diamond in 1968. Theodor Seuss Geisel died 24 September 1991.
This book made me think/indeed it did/how helpful the doctor is/even if you are not a kid! - Sorry...but imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. It is amazing to me how many lessons we learned from the good doctor that keep confronting us throughout life; that is why every year I set a day aside and go on a picnic with about three Dr. Seuss books - kind of a vacation back to childhood - with lots of lessons I can still take with me.
No childhood should be without the wisdom and wit of Dr Seuss, but this book in particular sums up the hopes, dreams and expectations we have for our children.
Whether your child is 6, 16, 26 ..... It says almost everything you would wish to say about their journey through life.
I first came across this at a conference for entrepreneurs, being read from the stage by one of the speakers. It was both inspiring and motivating, but as I listened, I know it was something I wanted to pass on to my family.
I bought the hardback version which tells you something of the degree to which I believe this is an absolute classic.
3.5 stars (4/10 hearts). I had high hopes for this book, because I’ve been on a Seuss binge and I loved his homely, pithy wisdom. I was a bit disappointed that some of these “wisdom” bits were a bit stretched/out of context, or where the point could have been illustrated better with a different quotation. I also wished they’d included a few other of his great quotes. However, overall, this was a good collection of Seuss’ good sayings and it included some I hadn’t thought about or noticed, which I appreciated! Overall, I think this is a good base for me to start my own personal collection of “Seuss-isms.” :)

A guide to life for those just starting out….and those already on their way
I think I’ve read this at least once before. But to be truthfully honest, I’m really not sure. It’s filled with wit, wisdom and lore. But for being stupid, it’s not a guaranteed cure.
Always fun - makes me want to read a couple of the titles that I have not read before in full - lucky, I know we have them in the library - might read during my lunch break I think.
One of 44 children's books he wrote... this tiny gift edition gives us a peek into some of them. My favorite line found here from the book "On Aging": You're in pretty good shape for the shape you are in!" Awesome! Who says it is just for kids?
Filled with the wonder words of Dr. Seuss from his many books, this book will bring back memories of your favorites! Each quote from a book is labeled with advice. From How The Grinch Stole Christmas, Learn to Improvise: “All I need is a reindeer. . . . The Grinch looked around.” And from One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish, Take A Walk On The Wild Side: “Did you ever walk/with ten cats/on your head?” I’m not sure that all are included, but many, many of the favorite books are here, a lovely walk through our Seussical reading lives!
Who doesn't love Dr. Seuss?!?!? This book contains a few favorite quotes from Dr. Seuss books, organized by topics. Just a short inspirational reference....to raise your spirits!
I wish I would've had this when I was younger, it would've saved me from making a mistake or two. I love Dr. Seuss so I may be biased. But, definitely a new juvie fave for this adult.
I was gifted this book for my birthday and I finally had a chance to read it. It’s a great book with a compilation of quotes and snippets from other Dr Suess published works. Indeed Dr Suess makes reading fun.. really brought back memories of my childhood! A lot of the snippets need to be printed and framed..
It was nice reminiscing about some of my childhood favorite books. So many lessons we learn through reading funny Dr. Seuss books. This would make a great gift for anyone who grew up reading Dr. Seuss.
It is fun to have so many of the lessons from Dr. Seuss in one place. This is one that would make a great addition to all home libraries, especially if the entire Seuss library is not available.
The perfect book for a 3-year-old starting preschool, or for a twenty-something who feels completely lost and confused in life. I’ve read this book several times — I go back to it whenever I feel lost, and I love it deeply.
Title: Seuss-isms Author:Theodor Seuss Geisel Illustrator: Bryan Collier Genre:Poetry Theme(s): Words of Advice Opening line/sentence: Be True to Yourself- You have brains in your head. Brief Book Summary: This book of Dr. Seuss poetry is in the normal Dr. Seuss rhyme scheme but all of the poems are words of wisdom or advice. Professional Recommendation/Review #1: Dozens of advice nuggets ("Think Before You Speak," "Tell the Truth," etc.) are reinforced with lines and images from Dr. Seuss books (e.g., "A person's a person, no matter how small," from Horton Hears a Who!, illustrates "Never Underestimate the Power of One"). The doctor gives great advice, although this time it's aimed at those older than his typical reader. Professional Recommendation/Review #2: With a whimsical drawing of the Cat in the Hat s hat and child-like lettering on the cover, this small-format book appears to appeal to young readers. It is published by the Children s Books division of Random House, after all, and the contents consist of illustrations from books by Dr. Seuss, accompanied by one or two stanza-long quotations from various of his books. In her introduction, however, Audrey Geisel, president and CEO of Dr. Seuss Enterprises, reveals the book s purpose: to offer advice for living. Despite appearances, this didactic collection of Seuss snippets, packaged as a Gift Edition, is not child-friendly. The material is arranged according to such sub-heads as On adversity and On aging, topics that are not intrinsically interesting to children. On life s mysteries contains the advice Cause you never can tell/What goes on down below!/This pool might be bigger/Than you or I know! Nostalgic adults might find this prescription amusing. Most children, however, would be baffled or insulted to receive this volume as a gift. 1997, Random House Children s Books, $7.99. Ages adult. (PUBLISHER: Random House (New York:), PUBLISHED: c1997.) Response to Two Professional Reviews: I do not believe that there is an age minimum or limit for reading this book. Yes, younger readers will need help analyzing the words to find the meaning but that is the magic of poetry. Everyone can interpret it in a different way and all of those ways are meaningful. Evaluation of Literary Elements: The illustrations in the the book take up a full spread which invites the reader right into the page. The font although is small, is written in a Times New Roman to make it easy to read. Consideration of Instructional Application: I would read a poem to my class everyday. I would write it on the board and give my students a chance to draw, write, record themselves if we have ipad technology to express how
This collection of small excerpts from Dr. Seuss's book, highlighting different words of wisdom of different everyday topics, has been put together by Dr. Seuss's wife. Dr. Seuss had such a unique way of talking through his books to people about common everyday topics, such as diversity, love, growing up and success. I loved this book and the truth behind it. A book that is short, but teaches so much to the reader about life, which is what Dr. Seuss was so famous for. A book that can be read over and over again and you will learn something new each time you read it. For children of all ages.
A collection of excerpts from Seuss's picture books divided into categories such as adversity. loyalty, equality and justice, diversity, respecting your elders, activism, spirituality, aging, being true to yourself, eating, and success. Also included is an introduction by Audrey Geisel (Seuss's wife).
I bought a Seuss-ism book for my daughter's teachers to write messages in to present to her with on her graduation day. The beginning of school year I'll ask them to write on the "for those just starting out..." page and on the last day of school I'll ask them to write to her again on the "and those already on their way" page.

when I first got it I was surprised with how tiny it is but it was so cute. I thought it would be different and have some more things inside but it was just some quotes from his other books. I was still a great read! it only took me like 3 minutes to read it but worth it. very cute for someone going through some tough times.
Seuss-isms! A Guide to Life for Those Just Starting Out…and Those Already on Their Way by Dr. Seuss is a compilation of the best stanzas Dr. Seuss has to offer. Giving advice on everything from diversity to being flexible to telling the truth, this is definitely a book to read to little ones to build character.
An amazing gift for those who are starting out on a journey. I received this as a gift for graduation undergrad and it has brought me so much joy. This book takes excerpts from Dr. Seuss books and complies them with themed lessons we can receive from each book. Love it! Dr. Seuss fans will adore this!
This book comes in very handy (it's small) and you can always carry it with you and you can learn a lot from it. It contains cuts from the various children's books by Dr. Seuss, who is an amazing writer. Adults can relate well to all his books!
