I never thought I'd find a Jily fanfic as good as TLAT but alas, here I am. The main thing for me when reading a Jily fanfic is getting their characters right. Now, we haven't actually met them according to J.K Rowling, but personally, TLAT James and Lily are 100% canon to me. So yeah, Jily was on point for me in this. We get a new Marlene and slightly different versions of Peter, Sirius and Remus, which I really enjoyed because it showed their growth as characters, not necessarily in a positive way, but how life just gets to them and shapes them to be the characters that Rowling did present to us. Can I just quickly mention how much I love Dorcas and how lovely I thought it was that the strongly seemed to be like Tonks? Really really well done honestly. Peter's story in this fanfic is specially my favorite thing because it explains and shows the origins of why he betrayed his friends, and while it is unforgivable, I was able to just understand the motive.
Anyways here's some thoughts I had back when I just finished reading it (it's quite long).
I love reading Marauder era fanfics because it’s fun to have a view of the first wizarding war with Voldemort. Sometimes when you read a book or watch a movie you don’t consider the background information, which is important because it enriches the story. You get a general perception of why characters commit certain things or are the way they are.
Take peter pettigrew for example. Yeah he’s the asshole who betrayed his friends in such an unforgivable way that’s hard to comprehend but I understand him. I could get a different perception of him, specially after reading this fanfic where this author, even though made up a whole story about him that isn’t told by JK Rowling herself, made me realize that people don’t change out of the sudden without any given reason. Peter was in a war, a war where people he loved were constantly dying and he was constantly beaten up for being friends with muggleborns and blood traitors. Yeah, the rest of the marauders were too but people are different.
Damn it we tend to generalize people to the point were we can’t even see that yeah, we’re flawed and we understand and see things differently. Peter couldn’t take it, the war got to him and he decided to save himself because quite frankly it was easier than saving everybody else. It’s fucked up but it’s so real. One might think that you’re strong enough, that you can take anything, but we all have a breaking point. And I understand why peter did what he did, why he saved his own skin and broke the lives of his friends.
This story really gets to me. Harry Potter, not just the story we know from the books, but the ones fans write because they need something more, really get to me. Because they’re real. These are things that are happening constantly in the world and it tears my heart apart, because human beings can be really cruel to the people they love. Because the human mind is so fragile, specially during times of war, that you can become less of a human. Yeah maybe it’s funny that it’s takes Harry Potter fan fiction to make me see and feel this, but I appreciate it. I really do. Because even though they’re fictional characters, the things they’ve gone through are things that actually happen.
A man like Voldemort did exist and did kill millions of people because they weren’t “pure”. He killed people who sided with them and thought differently. There were men and women who couldn’t face and stand up to the horrible things that happened. People that have lived before us (and even now man) went through horrible unimaginable things and I just don’t want to ever experience the things I read. I honestly don’t know how I’d handle it. The loss of your dearest friends, your life and basically your will to live. Lily and james had harry to look forward to, he’s the only reason why they were coping. The rest of the marauders barely had a fire in them (peter’s died way back in 6th year!) because of how much of what they had faced wasn’t helping them win the war. And then James and lily died, all of their life, at 21, was taken from them. The life they could have had with harry. I just, it’s so fucked up. And not to mention the fact that Sirius spent 12 years in jail because his friend betrayed all of them, knowing james and lily had a child. Not being able to see his best friend be buried, of being able to take care of his godson, be there for Remus who I can’t even imagen must have gone through ALONE (specially with his condition! He’s already excluded from society!) It’s horrible because it is a reality and it’s so so sad.
I had a fucking blast reading this, as I always do with Jily / Marauders fanfics. I do heavily recommend it!
