“We stand united, Family of Immortals. Plagued by life. Cursed by the hand of God …”
Mattia was born into an immortal family whose wealth is marked by a trail of blood. But when he meets the unnervingly familiar assistant of his next target, an unexpected rush of emotions begins to unravel his carefully laid plans.
Lissie lives a mundane life filled with work … and little else. She hasn’t taken a risk since she moved to New York City after college—seven years ago. But when the mysterious Matthew McCloud walks through the door of her office, she finds herself diving head-first into a whirlwind romance she never saw coming.
Rogue is an urban fantasy/contemporary romance/historical romance for teen and adult readers. It is the first book in the Plagued Trilogy.
Kari is a romance, historical fiction, and fantasy author. She was inspired to write after moving to the colorful and energetic city of New York. She and her husband now live in France and spend as much time as possible traveling across Europe. Kari's passion for creating art was developed from the time she was a child. Her artistic endeavors have ranged from music composition to photography to fashion design, but writing novels is far and away her favorite artistic outlet. She can often be found wrapped up in her favorite blanket, writing her next novel with a cup of hot tea in hand. Kari is also a professional wedding photographer with her husband at Cottonwood Studios.
It's not everyday you get to read a book that was written by a friend. I've known Kari for years and it doesn't surprise me that she wrote a book. Not only did she write a book, she wrote a GREAT book! I loved it! I can't wait for the next one to come out! I will be asking tons of questions about the new one soon...be prepared!!! BRING ON GHOST!!!
Kari Nichols' ability to take history and sprinkle it with romance, mystery and suspense must be applauded. Reading the description made me think this was going to be another historical fantasy story that would focus more on romance than fantasy. I was delighted to find out I was wrong. While the romance is visible, it is not over the top and you are not distracted from the plot at hand.
The mystery and suspense of Rogue twists, turns and does more than a backflip with the characters almost becoming real people around you. The author also managed to keep me in suspense to the end, lots of surprises through the book. A vivid tale which is a must read anyone who enjoys historical fiction with an element of suspense.
Reviewer Disclosure - I received a free copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
For its genre, I'd say this first in the series was quite good. If you love romance of the fantastical kind, you'll enjoy it. I have to admit, I was drawn in by the cover art for this series. I'm anxious to see where that ending leads.

***A complimentary copy of this read was furnished by author in exchange for a review*** Mattia, the least in a family of immortal, alpha assassins is preparing to step into the family business. After an inkling of the target's identity, the reader is swept into his memory of that first assignment and earning his assassin moniker, Rogue.
As Mattia awaits the contract details, he cleverly maneuvers a designated 'fall' guy in place. He seamlessly arranges a life for his false identity by establishing friendships and allowing his charm to magnetize the fairer sex and to thwart suspicious whispers aimed his way after the deed is done. But the agreed upon contract upsets Mattia's carefully laid plans and causes unrest in the family business.
Fast forward twp hundred years land Mattia has become the assassin Rogue. He's bored with his immortal lot in life, but dutifully carries out his contracted assignments. When he meets his latest target's assistant, Lissie Renaud, Rogue is overwhelmed by a sense of deja vu.
Lissie appears to be the reincarnation of Rogue's long dead lady love. The most delectably irresistible and intriguing female he ever met. To say Rogue is smitten is an understatement as the longer he's around Lissie, the more he discovers similarities between the women. Lissie, too, is overwhelmed because she doesn't date and is out of her element when she's not working but finds Mattia easy to be with.
Definitely not disappointed, this reader was surprised romance seemed to propel this well paced foundation story. I enjoyed the triangle, and Rogue's desire but wasn't clear if he really understood his own situation. Though the writing style was formal and stilted for this reader's taste and caused a couple of false starts, it was fitting, though I would have appreciated more depth in the leads.
This reader's opinions on the read vary as much as the elements of the read. It dares the reader to pigeonhole it on a shelf. The immortality fits into PNR, UF, Fantasy or Sci-Fi; the speed of the romance was as quick as a PNR; the romance itself is both historical and contemporary and; the different locations are part travelogue, not to mention a bit of suspense, mystery, etc.
I liked but didn't love this installment. A new author captured this cynical reader's imagination with the right amount of characters and a terrific storyline. My curiosity is tweaked enough so that I want to know more about several characters and will watch for more of her work. Overall, this was an interesting enough read to classify it an enjoyable couple of hours on the window seat or at the beach.
I absolutely positively LOVED this book. Kari Nichols has my attention. I will be waiting impatiently for "Ghost".. When will the next book be available?
Rogue is a beautiful, timeless, and suspenseful love story. Imagine losing the love of your life and knowing you will live an eternity without that person. Now, imagine you see her again. Is it really her or is it just a coincidence. Read and decide for yourself.
The author keeps the mystery throughout the story as she doles out info small bits at a time.. Wonderfully delicious. I found it very hard to put this book down and resented intrusions on my "reading" time. Rogue is a member of a family of Immortals. Their family business is mysterious and deadly.
"I received this book in exchange for an honest review."
Wow, this one blew me away. I enjoy most books I read and if you check over my reviews, I give out lots of 4 stars, but this one had that little bit more. I got drawn in to Mattia and Anamaria's story and relationship, then I got drawn in again to Matthew and Lissie's story and relationship. I couldn't help finding myself rooting for the assassins: Matthew and his brothers Antonia and Marcus. I loved the fantasy, the romance and the action. I can't wait to read more about The Family.
I received a complimentary copy in exchange for my honest review but I can't wait to get into book 2 - Ghost!
I’m still not sure if what genre Rogue fits into. As I am not normally one who reads anything remotely connected to romance, I wasn’t sure at first. With the setting among the immortals telling me it was fantasy and with them being a group of assassins saying action and adventure, I read on. In the end the winner was romance.
And it was a winner. I would recommend this book to any and all romance lovers, but it has an appeal beyond that genre. Looking forward to reading the next in the trilogy
I love love love this book! I love how Kari makes the characters relatable and real, but also they have a touch of fairy tale whimsy about them, which makes me adore them even more! Also, Kari's attention to food details makes my heart sing. I'm so intrigued as to how The Family became immortal and I can't wait to read the next one!
I've been on the hunt for a good book to draw me in for awhile. Rogue has been on my radar for a very long time, and I'm so thankful I finally picked it up. The story was intriguing and the character development was captivating. The writing style in this book makes for an enjoyable read with twists that keep you guessing. I'll definitely be recommending this book to everyone!
Loved this book. It appealed to all my senses. There was romance, violence, historical references, etc. Kari's attention to detail is amazing. Can't wait for the next book.
Kari Nichols' Rogue was a interesting book that follows the journey of an immortal assassin across centuries. She definitely has a talent for painting a picture with words with her talent for descriptive writing. I was also impressed with her ability to bring a historical perspective to a fantasy novel, while adding a compelling romantic twist to the story. Kari was also able to bring these elements and more to create an intriguing start to her series that I would highly recommend to those with an interest in fantasy, historical fiction, or romance.
I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I received a free copy of this book through goodreads first reads. The relationship in the book reminded me a lot of the relationship in the 50 Shades of Grey series. In terms of a billionaire meeting a plain jane, falling in love, spending tons of money on the girl, breaking up, being miserable, then getting back together. Although I must say that I liked this book so much better. It revolves around an interesting story about immortal assassins. I would be very interested in picking up the next book to find out more about the immortal "family".
