What a wonderful collection of recipes! Beautiful, vivid photos and insight into the Amish way of life. I was honored to include a few recipes from our Amish friends too!
╰┈➤ This cookbook had just the right amount of sweet and savory to show us how the Amish crave a simpler life (so to say) while not compromising on stunning dishes. It’s not secret that the Amish create legendary food, so when I saw this cookbook I knew I wanted to take a peek. While I only got a small taste of the full cookbook, I was impressed by the options. Not only was I impressed to find a gluten free recipe (I haven’t been able to eat gluten for most of my life) but I also found that this book is impossible to read without sitting close to a kitchen :) If you’re in the mood for putting on an apron and making some dishes you and your table mates are sure to enjoy then this is the book for you! And as a bonus, I was deeply impressed with the graphics inside of the book. Many of the recipes have photos to go along with (something I look for in any cookbook I want to own), as well as having beautiful quotes and verses pages with barns and the great outdoors. I didn’t leave a full five stars due to some of the complexity of some of the recipes, and due to the lack of variety in recipes. However I am aware I didn’t read a full copy thus only reduced one star.
Special thanks to Netgalley for providing me with a complimentary snippet of this book in exchange for an honest review. I was not required to leave a positive review!
The Hert of the Amish Cookbook: 190 Amish Recipes Barbour This book would be worth purchasing for the photographs, with 180 recipes you are getting two books in one. The photographs are magnificent. The Amish do not allow their face to be photographed but the images of them from behind are powerful. Some of the photographs depict their farms; one picture shows a beautiful 3 story white home with snow covered fields, smoke coming out of the chimney and the sun peeking out of the clouds. There is a photograph of corn shocks in a field, in the background you can see a house, silo, barn and windmill; what a beautiful fall scene. There is a photo of the men cutting hay with a horse drawn mower, men in the field with pitchforks gathering the hay into small stacks; in the background you can see the tall stalks of corn as well as the house, barn and windmill. The Amish children work hard and play hard. This book has 180 delicious recipes; this book is only a sample of what’s actually inside the book. The Morning Glory Muffins sound delicious with cinnamon, grated carrots, raisins, nuts, coconut, apple and wheat flour. The homemade Granola sounds healthy. I definitely want a piece of Walnut Wonder Coffee Cake. The Breakfast Tarts sound delicious filled with potatoes, bacon, and cheese. There is a recipe for Pancake Pizza that has it all: eggs, cheese, sausage gravy, bacon, served on a pancake with Maple Syrup. The Wreck is a breakfast dish popular at a local Amish restaurant. It has a biscuit with ham, bacon, or sausage, hash browns, pepper and onions, shredded cheese topped by Sausage Gravy. I plan to try the recipe for Melt-In-Your-Mouth Biscuits soon as well as the Butterhorns. This book has delicious recipes and photos that will have you dreaming of visiting an Amish farm. I received a complimentary digital copy of this book for review purposes. My reviews express my unbiased opinions.

When it comes to cookbooks, I'm a huge fan of home cooking and recipes that remind me of home, much like the recipes found in this book. Growing up in a Mennonite home, these were many of the dishes my grandma used to cook and have remained favorites for as long as I can remember. Unfortunately I can only speak upon the recipes that are shown in the "sample" printing of this book that are mainly breakfast items but they all sound absolutely amazing!
The recipes are easy to follow and understand, the photographs are beautiful and I would love to see this book in a full version once it's released.
I received this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
The recipes look delicious from what I could read in the small sample given. However there are no portions indicated. How many muffins does one recipe make, how much granola does another recipe give and how many pancakes?? It is not very useful. Living alone, I don’t want to end up with 15 cups of granola or 30 muffins (even if I can freeze them) Unfortunately, we only have access to the breakfast chapter of the cookbook.
This is a wonderful cookbook! The photos are stellar, the background stories and information are fascinating, and the Bible verses add a special touch. There are so many great recipes to choose from, and many of them are even simple enough for the novice cook. It would be a great addition to anyone's cookbook collection.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an advanced copy of this book. All comments and opinions are entirely my own and voluntary.
I enjoy Amish cookbooks because they tend to use whole ingredients in no-nonsense recipes. I love how several recipes use sucanat or honey as sweetners. The protein bars turned out great!
I received this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I should have read the description to realize this was a sample so that is on me. However, I found it really interesting that there was no stories or explanations for the recipes. The recipes that I was able to view, looked delicious and sounded simple enough to make. Pictures were also stunning but the book felt like it was lacking something small and it needed a personal touch.
The topics name for each chapter are brilliant. The pictures are gorgeous. This was a sample reading so I wasn’t able to see the whole book but what I did see was fantastic. This is a book well worth getting and putting in a collection.
I am definitely a fan of made from scratch cooking and baking especially from the Amish. This book seems to cover many of these styles recipes. I will be checking it further on Amazon since I only received a portion through Netgalley. A review was not required.
There are many yummy sounding recipes in The Heart Of The Amish Cookbook and I have tried a few of them already and they turned out delicious. I can’t wait to try more of the recipes.
