He’s ruining her mission, disrupting her plans, and making it impossible to escape. Worst of all, she can’t shake the feeling that he’s not just toying with her—he’s courting her.
Dani has spent her life following the rules. All she wants is to earn her blue suit, make it to the science sector, and prove she’s more than a collector sent to scavenge artifacts from dead worlds.
She just has to survive this one last mission.
But the planet isn’t as empty as it should be. Something is stalking her in the ruins—fast, relentless, and far too intelligent. A deadly alien with sharp instincts, strange features, and an unsettling fixation on her. They’re ruining her mission at every turn, and she’s certain they want to harm her. Or worse.
Kryxis has spent his life in solitude, a predator feared by all. And he prefers it that way. But lately, the silence has grown hollow. He craves something more—someone to share his den, his hoard, his hunger.
Then a ship arrives. And with it, her.
The human is fearless, reckless, and utterly captivating. At first, he thinks he’ll devour her. But now? Now he’s determined to claim her, to prove he’s more than a monster in the dark—he’s a warrior worthy to be her mate.
Kryxis is part of the vrisha warriors series, a scifi romance with very alien-looking aliens, and can be read as a standalone. To enjoy the universe even more, each book can be read in Xora Axrel Vrexus Xeda Kryxis
3/28/25 edit: It's officially release day for KRYXIS! I can't recommend this series enough for seasoned alien lovers or new readers looking to explore the genre. Kryxis is a great addition to the series, and I can't wait to see everyone fall in love with our new semi-feral, magpie, hoarder alien boyfriend😍
This is an ARC read and review. As always, many thanks to the author + team for this opportunity!
4✨ 2.5🌶️
Kryxis by Olivia Riley is Book 5 in her Vrisha Warriors series, alien romance books with a different main couple each go around.
While a part of the series, Kryxis also seems like a separate entity all on its own, for a number of reasons, mostly plot-related. I’m about 60% sure this could be read as a standalone, but it would make it a more enjoyable and meaningful read to have read the others in the series first—just to understand the overarching plot history.
Kryxis follows FMC Dani, a team lead on artifact collection unit for the company Nexacor. However, her true passion is to become an officer in the science unit, doing the research on the artifacts, versus being the one to collect it.
Dani knows that in order for her to get that promotion, the mission she’s leading has to be successful. Especially because she’s already battling a less than sterling standing in society, as the daughter of father’s affair. She just needs to land on this bug-infested, no-longer-inhabitable planet, get some batteries, and mission success.
If only it was that easy.
Kryxis is a vrisha who has been living on that planet for almost as long as he could remember. And he usually doesn’t want to remember those beginning days. He’s carved out a life for himself here, keeping his hunting instincts fresh with the local bug population and amassing a collection of intriguing items to fill his den with. But there’s something missing…
And Kryxis knows exactly what it is when an enticing human female arrives on his planet.
❤️sci-fi alien romance 💙dual pov, third person (about 70/30 majority Dani pov) ❤️human FMC x alien MMC 💙he falls first (after she tries to kill him) ❤️language barrier 💙gives off 1979’s Alien energy, but instead of scary tension, it’s sexy tension ❤️feral MMC who hunts and gathers for FMC 💙MMC smells like coffee ❤️double EVERYTHING 💙virgin mmc
I really liked Kryxis and thought it was a solid yet different entry to the series as a whole. It provided almost like an offshoot story, something set in the same world but taking place in parallel, and it was really interesting to explore elements of the larger story we haven’t seen fleshed out yet, as well as a fresh take on the human x vrisha romance storyline. That’s something I really appreciate about the series—its ability to make each romance unique, even with the same species pairing each time.
The romance between Dani and Kryxis is a high point of the book. They were each dealing with loneliness in their own ways—Kryxis through the literal lack of other species’ contact, and Dani through feeling like she would never mean anything more than temporary fun to someone—so when the two finally get to the romantic climax of the story, you see so clearly as a reader how they each fill the other’s loneliness perfectly. They had been looking for each other, unknowingly, this whole time, and it was truly cosmic fate to have found each other in all the universe.
Because Dani and Kryxis have so much chemistry together, the spice scenes are SO SO SO SO HOT. They start out with exploring each other’s differences, seeing what gave the other pleasure. This was Dani’s first time with a species other than human, but this was Kryxis’ first time, period. But even that initial exploring was sexy.
When I say Kryxis had double everything, I mean EVERYTHING. 4 arms, 2 tongues, 2 eye sets, double 🍆🍆… and yes, he knew how to use it (I’m talking double AND dual penetration). The spice happened toward the back end (😂) of the book, but it was really worth it, especially with the sparks of romantic and sexual tension thrown in before then.
With the language barrier between the two, I love that trope of the struggle of trying to figure out what the other means, and slowly teaching each other their languages, but it happened a little too quickly and easily for me sometimes. I would’ve loved to see this book padded with at least 50-70 more pages, to give more time to that language learning. Or, use the they-get-translators-when-back-in-safety trope as well. I would also use those extra pages to expand on the ending. I would’ve loved a “I love you” or equivalent declaration scene, although the “my love/my mate” language was so sweet and did fulfill that want in a way.
I selfishly want more of this series. But whatever stories Olivia Riley tells, she has a reader in me!
4.5 stars ARC review Kryxis was such a shit and I loved him for it. He was playful in the most Vrisha sense of that word. Even though he was practically feral, he was still intelligent and wanted companionship. Dani was kind, assertive, and goal oriented, although whose goals wouldn’t change a bit after meeting a hot AF Vrisha? It was interesting to have a Vrisha book almost completely isolated from goings on in the Vrisha home world drama saga.
Spice: 3/5
Triggers: violence, gore, death, involuntary body modification/splicing, captivity (historical), semi-kidnapping, abduction of child, animal attack, bugs, animal death, corrupt corporation, references to parent cheating, family estrangement, references to death of parent
Christina’s review is so good at capturing this sci-fi romance. I’ve been hit and miss with this author mostly because some of her books are too dark or experiment-heavy for me personally. Since Kryxis does read like a standalone in this world, I wasn’t lost over the books I haven’t been able to read and I could sink into this entertaining, feral alien becoming intrigued by and enamored with a human on a mission. Along with the human becoming equally intrigued back.
Written in third person, dual POV. No ow drama, tiny amount of om drama from a security guy who’s interested in the h too. H was inexperienced and the h seemed to only have casual flings.
Some tropes/themes: ☆ FMC trying to move up in a company ☆ Deserted planet that’s not as deserted as they think ☆ Results of medical experimentation uncovered ☆ Mostly feral MMC with a mischievous edge ☆ Found family ☆ Instincts ☆ Mains protective of each other ☆ Language barrier ☆ Cute animal sidekick ☆ Shady organizations
Like Christina mentions in her review, this felt like a fresh sci-fi romance and I sped through it on this Sunday morning. Dani (h) struck me as a competent and caring leader who wasn’t brash and thought about more than just the company-line. Kryxis (H) was intelligent, curious-minded, and Dani’s team coming to his planet opens up his whole world, literally. Dani’s terrified of him at first, as one usually would be by a ginormous, demon-like creature, but circumstances develop that allow for trust to slowly be built and a budding relationship to form amongst the backdrop of a dangerous, abandoned planet.
There are intense moments in the story with uncertainties and danger surrounding them, before they officially “meet” and afterwards. I don’t want to spoil the book by mentioning too much, but there’s more than just Kryxis to uncover on this planet. He was pretty much the king of his defined world. Sadly, it wasn’t much of a life for him though and his origins are heartbreaking. However, something about Dani sparks intense responses inside him. He just has to win her over despite a rocky start and unbeknownst to him, a ticking time limit. Dani's personal story also had some sadness, but she's found a family with her team and now Kryxis sparks something in her too.
I adored how Kryxis was careful with Dani once he focused on her, also how he went about trying to woo her. Dani's unsure of him, for good reason, but she also recognizes the interest there. Steam-wise, it’s a slow burn with two very spicy scenes. Kryxis has double the pleasure if you know what I mean and figures out how he can use it. I do wish that there had been slightly more to the page count and the build-up to the steamy times, particularly since they'd gotten more effective at communicating but it still wasn't completely smooth. It doesn’t feel too fast exactly, I just wanted more and then I wanted more relationship-focused time once they’re actually safe before the end.
I did feel like the end was somewhat rushed, esp given a conflicting authority issue and some questionable actions that arise. It might have also felt rushed in contrast to the pacing and tenseness of the earlier part of the book. However, I loved the peek at the end of their new life. It was precious and heartwarming for Dani, Kryxis, and their found family. The last couple pages were especially good. Again, I still could have had some more time spent on them here because I’m greedy like that but this is them in their HEA, mated and having found their home with each other. I loved this!
I was kindly given a free copy of Olivia Riley's newest Vrisha warrior book, and what's not to like? I don't want to give any spoilers. I loved the world that was created here. Kryxis was primal and feral. My favorite ingredients for an alien romance book. I loved his POV. Dani was determined because of where she came from, but how can you even deny a Vrisha warrior? You can't. I'd be putty in their hands. 🙈😂 It was bloody and had some gore. Dani and Kryxis's relationship was off the charts, and one of my fav pairings so far in this series. And that's saying something. Could beat Heart's Prisoner maybe. This book was exciting and fast paced until the end. I'll be buying a physical copy as I have all of Olivia's books because I like them so much. Her "heroes" actually look like aliens and I love that. Definitely recommend the whole series and I'm looking forward to more.
❥ 𝑫𝒂𝒏𝒊 𝜗𝜚˚⋆ I liked her. She is brave, fights for her life and has a good heart.
❥ 𝑲𝒓𝒚𝒙𝒊𝒔 ⋆✮ He is such a cutie despite being a warrior. Loved him.
✥ 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒃𝒐𝒐𝒌 Another great book in this series and I liked it better than the previous ones. This is the perfect mixture of dark sci-fi, comedy and love story. There is a solid and interesting plot with some shocking twists and turns. The writing style is fluent and easy to understand. I love the world the author has created and I‘m a big fan of the Vrisha. Dani and Kryxis are a good couple. There is a language barrier which is kind of funny. Kryxis is obsessed with Dani and stalks her. His behaviour sometimes was a mix between funny and creepy. He protects her and tries to court her (but he doesn‘t know how) and it was heartwarming to read how these two get closer to each other. I really liked them and had a smile on my face while reading. All in all this was a very good alien romance book!
𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐬 ᡣ𐭩ྀི₊ ⊹ possessive and protective hero, alien romance, science fiction, slow burn, touch her and die, secrets and lies, alien that looks alien, forced proximity, wound tending, he falls first and harder, language barrier
Another awesome book by Olivia Riley, an insta-buy author for me! Kryxis is a monstrous-looking alien who is so playful and charming that I was aww-ing at his antics in no time. The FMC is tough, courageous, and such a good match for him. The world building was superb, and the creepy atmosphere had me wrapping myself tightly in a comforting blanket. Action, adventure, danger, some jump scares, a cute and hot love story on a planet full of secrets - that's a 5-star sci-fi romance for me!
I enjoyed this a lot! Like every Riley book, there was a lot of action and adventure with some stellar world building. Dani, the FMC, was a bad ass captain who really cared for her team and Kryxis was a lonely soul trapped on a desolate planet. The romance was sweet but I felt it needed more development… hence the 3 star rating. It could have been great with another 100 pages devoted to the building of an emotional connection between the two. Still a fun read, though!
I love this series I have a soft spot for the Vrisha they’re so alien deadly and monstrous in their appearance but underneath that with the mate they choose they’re a pussycat for them. So i was incredibly excited to get my latest fix.
Dani works for Nexacor shes a lowly collector despite her father being the boss. Shes the result of an extra marital affair so unlike her siblings Dani has had to work for every one of her limited opportunities. If this goes well it means the chance of a promotion. Her assignment is the decommissioned planet of X110 previously inhabited by the Marityne industries but unlike they’ve been led to believe it’s actually far from empty.
Xryxis takes an instant interest in the strangers invading his home used to being alone he’s bored and decides to play stalking and hunting from the shadows. At first he delights in Dani’s fear until he swiftly comes to the realisation that he feels something unexpected and decides to change gears. We have plenty of danger, X110 is a perilous place, theres also an initial language barrier and then theres the fact that these two are totally different species so a whole lot to unpack.
Xryxis was such a sweetheart well at least after he made a conscious effort to be nice he was. He’s also incredibly unsocialised being isolated and alone for so much of his life and his backstory was definitely sad for sure. Dani well I really did like her. She’s a definite trier is completely loyal but is also crying out for the affection shes been starved of and these two lost souls together just worked. Dani also becomes incredibly protective over Xryxis which was laughable when you consider just how deadly and capable he is. Theres a scene near the end when she proves this and it was totally endearing.
This was as usual well written and immersive and such a great read. Highly recommend if you like sci-fi romance this is a great one. I voluntary reviewed a copy of Kryxis.
Olivia Riley strikes again!! The sci-fi concepts are well executed and not confusing to understand, the world building is immersive and fleshed out, and the alien romance is frrrreaky in the best possible way. This was a short but action packed read. I only wish it was longer. Love this series!
Kryxis is at its best during the first 1/3 of the novel - excellent atmospheric writing with our stealthy alien hero and his heroine. Dani was smart and it showed and Kryxis was more than a little feral.
Once things got going however I did feel the speed picked up a little bit too quickly and we lost the suspense that made our first bit so good. This continued as we headed to the ship.
I’m still a sucker for the vrisha and always enjoy a new addition to the series ☺️
Kryxis was an absolutely delightful read for anyone who enjoys sci-fi romance. It had everything! From the action and thrills to the aliens, intergalactic tensions, and--of course--romance, this story hit every mark. The best part is that Kryxis is book 5 in the Vrisha Warriors series, and yet you could definitely jump straight into this story without any knowledge of the previous books. (Although, you'll also want to go back and read those too!)
Olivia Riley is phenomenal at crafting detailed and complex science fiction worlds. The different planets, aliens, the rivalries and alliances between the various species... everything is so well-written, and you can tell Riley has put a lot of thought into every part.
The MMC, Kryxis, is... well, an alien. In both looks and mannerisms, he's certainly no human. But despite these unique details, he's 100% lovable and ready to show the FMC, Dani, exactly just how much. Kryxis' personality was one of my favourite things about this story. He was feral and scary, yet also a bit of a jokester who just wanted to court his mate.
I don't want to give too many details away since it's better to read this story for yourself, but I will mention that I was completely over the moon with their meet-cute. The only way I can describe it is "hilariously determined." Both characters enjoyed the thrill of the hunt, but in vastly different ways.
I can already tell this is going to be one of my favourite reads for 2025. I've been a fangirl of Olivia Riley's work for a while now, and this book is just another favourite to add to the list. Her books are accessible for both newbies and seasoned lovers of sci-fi romance, and I would highly recommend Kryxis for anyone who wants to read about a feral yet fun, lovable alien getting the girl!
This one deviated from the others in the series in a surprising way. I was hooked from the first page (frankly, I'm just a fangirl of Olivia Riley's work). Krysis is a lonely but quite funny character. He's a joker who enjoys playing tricks. Many of the Vrisha in the series so far have been quite serious characters, so it was refreshing to see a very different type of MMC.
first things first if you know me, YOU KNOW exactly how much I love Olivia Riley‘s books! Now you can imagine how grateful and excited I was when I got this ARC🤪💓 and yes she did it again😌 won me over with the cutest vrishan potato ever!!
✔️An abandoned planet ✔️with a vrisha ruling over it ✔️and a girl on a mission ✔️ she tries to kill him like she literally set him on fire ✔️ he falls first and HARD after that
It was fantastic. He was as playful and flirty as it gets with a Vrisha. And everytime he gifted her something and tried to properly court her I just swooned and lost it!😭💗 When I tell you he even wore JEWELRY on a dangerous mission just to IMPRESS her!! It was such a refreshing read! I can’t recommend her books enough!
Can’t wait for her next release!🤭
ARC was given by the author in exchange for an honest review
The pronoun usage the first part of the book was confusing and annoying. Once that stopped and I understood who the book was talking about, it went much smoother and I enjoyed the story. I recommend for a quick read and the storylines in this series are unique not rinse and repeat.
Kryxis: The giant red murder kitty you didn’t know you needed in this Vrisha World
Let’s start with the cons, and boy, it’s a BIG ONE. Well… more like ONE big con against this book. This book is just not f*ckin’ long enough! Yep, I said it. I fell head over heels for my big red bad kitty Kryxis, and I need more of him. That’s my biggest gripe, and pretty much my only one. But before we dive deep into the alien meat of this review, here are some quick stats:
🔥 Spice Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars. The scenes were good—really good—but I needed more! (Or maybe I’m just greedy. Probably both.) 📖 Plot & Ending: 5 out of 5 stars. No notes, loved it. 💖 Happily Ever After? You bet. 😂 Wit & Humor: 4 out of 5 stars, mostly because Kryxis was unintentionally hilarious. 📜 Storyline & Development: 2 out of 5 stars. I really think this book needed to be longer to hit all the emotional beats and give Dani’s character more depth.
As expected from Olivia Riley, I was instantly sucked into the story and enjoyed every second of it. Now, I might be a bit biased here—Olivia Riley has been one of my top alien romance authors for the past two years, so this book had some big expectations to meet. And guess what? It did not disappoint. I especially loved the unexpected twist of having a fierce Vrisha who wasn't quite what you’d expect. It completely threw me off when I found myself feeling protective over him—warm fuzzy feelings for a Vrisha? Unheard of. They’re supposed to be terrifying giants that look like demons straight out of hell! But Kryxis? Kryxis might as well be a giant red cat pretending to be a Vrisha. And let me be clear about this, that is NOT a complaint.
However, let’s not forget: this kitty has claws. Big ones. And he knows how to use them. He’s just more of a wild, feral kitty than a murderous one.
Now, having devoured all of Olivia Riley’s books, I know my way around her alien worlds and dark, broody heroes. And Kryxis? He’s hands down the most lovable and adorable of all the Vrisha we’ve met so far. I stand by my earlier statement—he is a giant red cat trapped in a demon’s body. But don’t get it twisted, he’s still powerful, still scary, and definitely still capable of ripping your throat out if you so much as look at his lady the wrong way. The only difference is that, compared to the other Vrisha, Kryxis gives off more playful energy rather than straight-up murdery vibes. “Compared to the Vrisha” which still means he will absolutely rip your heart out, he’d just do it out of boredom rather than hatred towards humanity.
The one radiating that fierce, commanding energy isn’t Kryxis—it’s Dani. She’s confident, a natural leader, and absolutely unafraid to take charge. Which, honestly, is the perfect balance for Kryxis, who is naive when it comes to the world outside his forgotten world. Unlike the other Vrisha, Kryxis hasn't been conditioned to hate and be the fierce alpha that the others are. Those motherpuckers I would not want to stumble upon in the dark of night; Kryxis might give me a scare, but I'd show him my rock collection and we'd become best buds after he nearly gives me a heart attack. Let's not forget this kitty has big claws and knows how to use them; he's just more of a wild, feral kitty than a murderous one.
You can tell that Kryxis is a different hero than the others we've seen in the series. And even though I love the scary red alien falling hard for the human who tames him and shows him that humans aren't just puny ants beneath their feet, Kryxis flips the script by changing Dani instead. Once they get past all the misunderstandings (or, let’s be honest, him “teasing” the newcomers that landed in his domain), we see a lonely, primal creature who has just found his mate and is pulling out all the stops to woo her. And let me tell you, it’s freaking sweet! No wonder Dani falls for him. He’s not an evil asshole just because he’s Vrisha he’s just… bored. And in survival mode.
And of course, there’s still spice, still romance, but we just get a different kind of Vrisha this time around. It was a damn good story, and even though I wanted to drop a star because I felt like this book needed to be longer (seriously, I NEED MORE), I just couldn’t do it. Kryxis, with all his feral charm, won me over. So yeah—five stars.
Book 1 is still one of my favorites. I really liked how the two protagonists in that book were so different. Watching them learn to communicate / interact with each other and how their love story slowly unfolded was great. I felt this aspect of storytelling got a little bit forgotten in the following books of the Vrisha series but I still enjoy them.
The start of Krysis was very nice because we went back to what I liked best about the first book: we've got one scary monster our FMC didn't recognize. Krysis was a feral hunter who enjoyed violence and the author was very successful in picking my interest with his introduction. Dani sounded like a competent main character from the start, too. She was goal-oriented, not easily scared, and stepped up when sh*t needed to be done. Even the world building was great. A team stuck in a hostile environment with a mission, creepy creatures, alien tech...
All in all, a very promising start.
My only issue - which is kind of a big one, tbh - is about the timeline.
Everything unfolded within the span of... two days? I wish the author had given her two main characters time to breathe and grow into their relationship. Because they barely interacted for 48 hours (if even that) before the humans' spaceship was ready to leave the planet again.
By that time our MMC was absolutely in love with Dani, willing to die for her even, while Dani herself was ready to fall into bed with him. A part of me felt this cheapened her character a little bit, especially since it was mentioned at the start of the book that she didn't want a relationship right now : she didn't want anything superficial anymore, didn't want to feel used. But then? She goes and start a til-death-do-us-part relationship in less than 48 hours? Without really knowing the guy or even interacting much with him? Sure, there's that one scene where she thinks he's handsome, but were is the emotional connection ? Honestly, it felt more like she was sorry for Krysis for his horrible childhood and felt responsible because her boss was about to nuke his place. I didn't really see her starting to fall in love.
Meh.
Really, they went from trying to kill each other (Dina's perspective) and hunter playing with his meal cat-style (Krysis') to ride or die mates in less than 2 days. The shift in their relationship felt superficial. You could argue that from Krysis' pov it makes sense (he was impressed with her courage) and Dani's emotions were subtly shown (waaay too subtly), but I still think that their feelings were not explored enough or given the space it needed to grow properly before hitting the I-love-you-forever thing.
The wshiplash was kinda disorientating. And sorta disappointing.
I would have loved to spend just a tiny little bit more time watching their romance develop. Even one or two chapters about them spending time together to learn about each other would have been great. It would have been so easy to do, especially with the whole storm-thing blowing outside to keep them stuck in some building or something.
Anyway, I enjoyed the book but didn't love it... which is disappointing because it started so well but then just kind of fizzled out and ended up missing the mark by this much.
Uh baby, I’m going to love this one, I just know it. There’s no doubt about it—I LOVE EVERY VRISHA BOOK. Not one of them has been bad. If I could pick my kind of alien? The Vrisha nailed every damn point. Perfect blend of terrifying, hot, and fascinating.
So Kryxis… alone on the planet? Was he banned? Exiled? Left behind? I can’t wait to know more about that. And I’m already obsessed with the dual POVs. It makes the whole thing more immersive, like I’m living in both their skins at once. And this forgotten city—could it be the same one from the first book???
I didn’t even remember (or maybe didn’t know) that the Vrisha could mimic voices. Interesting. But what the actual fuck is going on with this planet? And these fungi? Are they controlling the creatures in the city? Is this some Last of Us situation? And Kryxis—oh gods, he’s having the time of his life messing with Dani and her team. Of course he is, he’s been alone for ages, bored out of his mind.
But what is Kryxis? He’s definitely not a normal Vrisha. I’m pretty damn sure Vrisha don’t have extra arms and eyes. Is he some kind of experiment? Tortured and twisted into something else? Is that why he has no memories? Or maybe this weird fungus is part of it? The mystery is killing me.
And Dani… oh Dani. She just started a courtship with Kryxis and doesn’t even know it. She bit him and then ran? That’s basically foreplay to a predator. Poor Kryxis though, he’s out here trying to impress her like a lovesick teen—showing her his lair, flexing his hunting skills—and she’s just like “meh, I’m here for the mission.” I almost feel bad for him.
Then the reveal: TWO cocks. Two. Holy hell. Makes sense though, since the guy’s got everything doubled. Honestly I should’ve expected it, but still—DAMN.
I’m liking this book, but I’ll be honest—it’s not the strongest of the series. Dani and Kryxis’s romance feels a little insta-love. Kryxis doesn’t have much experience with people (understandably, after all the shit he’s been through), but Dani? She just dives headfirst into everything with him. Maybe it’s loneliness, maybe it’s her being reckless, but it all felt too fast. Something’s missing here.
The part I am loving: the Alliance plotline. Dani’s company? No way they’re innocent. If they find out about Kryxis, it’s going to blow up. And the Vrisha? They’ll be beyond furious to learn that one of their fledglings was abducted, experimented on, tortured, and turned into something else. That fallout is going to be delicious.
So yeah, overall? The book was fine. Not amazing, not terrible. The sex was good (not mind-blowing, but solid). The romance was decent (but kind of shallow). The action was… meh. Everything about this book was just “so-so.” I think what I missed most was the survival element. Every Vrisha book before had that raw struggle to survive—hunting, fighting, pushing through danger. This one teased that vibe but never really delivered.
So Kryxis’s story was good enough to keep me listening, but it didn’t leave me wrecked and obsessed the way the other Vrisha books always do. I still love the series with my whole heart, but this one was missing the claws and teeth that usually keep me hooked. A little too much insta-love, not enough survival grit. Still, it’s Vrisha, so it’s better than most series out there—and I’ll always be here for them.
On her last mission before a serious promotion, girl is heading up a reckon mission for some seriously old tech on a seriously dodgy planet. They never know what to expect, but her spidey senses start tingling straight away that something isn't right, especially when her mum's old 'monster proximity wristband' keeps going off. It's not long before she's been kidnapped-rescued (rescu-napped?) and has to figure out how to move forward.
✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧
Plot The plot is very much split into two parts, with the first being centred on the not-so-abandoned planet and later moving to the company ship. I enjoyed the forced proximity that came with their struggles on the planet more so than those on the ship, with the second half of the story feeling a bit rushed. I also liked the language barrier and how they worked to overcome this, and while we know the Vrisha are incredibly quick to learn new languages, I did feel that they both did this too quickly. Either way, the overall plot lines were really engaging and I enjoyed all of Kryxis' antics.
Characters FMC I have mixed feelings about our FMC. I like her ambition and drive to not only improve her own life, but also in trying to care for her team, even if this was a bit like herding cats. I liked her initial reaction to being rescue-napped by the MMC, in the respect that she was all "okay thanks, but imma go now", which felt very natural in a world of instalove alien romances. But I didn't feel that she had a huge amount of character development and despite some insight into her past and family she came across a bit flat.
MMC The MMC is incredibly unique as the Vrisha go - he's spend so much of his life alone and has no obvious ideas of his peoples culture or normal behaviours and has therefore become the the cutest killing machine ever. He reminds me so much of a golden retriever, needing to make a friend and wanting to do everything he could to make her happy and keep her safe. I really liked how his lack of social skills lead him to express himself in the way that he did and felt that this was a refreshing step away from the gruff and grumpy standard Vrisha MMC's. My only complaint is that I wish we had found out more about him. We got a glimpse at his past and why he was on that planet, but I wanted even more.
The Rest Her team were okay, but we didn't get to see a lot of them.
Chemistry The chemistry was okay-ish, although I think I felt it came from from the MMC.
The Good Kryxis. I loved everything about him and his backstory and personality.
The Bad Most backstory on both main characters. And for the main story to be longer.
The Ugly Nothing ugly.
The Wrap Up This is an excellent further addition to the Vrisha books and it was wonderful to see a Vrisha with an unusual personality.

Ever since I read about my first Vrisha warrior in Heart's Prisoner, I have been completely intrigued (*cough-obsessed-cough*) with them. Each new one I read I say is my favorite story lol But Kryxis was definitely the most interesting male lead.
Great world building and wonderful characters. The story was an exciting adventure with danger, action, and suspense. I loved both Dani and Kryxis. When I started with Kryxis's chapter, I liked his outlook on things and thought I'd enjoy being in his perspective more. But then in Dani's chapters, I'm quickly roped into her side of things. I can't say which I enjoyed more- the hunter and these new beings he's toying with and observing, or the hunted, noticing odd scents and sounds and realizing they're not alone.
Kryxis is an apex predator and loves his freedom, but has grown bored of the day-to-day, and lonely with no one to share his time and den with. Dani is also very lonely. She has her own issues to work through, and all her relationships never last because she feels she won't be taken seriously or seen as good enough. She wants to prove herself.
I love the way the relationship between them develops. Loved that you could see the way their opinions of each other begin to shift and change from each of their perspectives over time.
There were times I thought Kryxis was absolutely adorable. He is different from previous Vrisha I've read about. I found him completely endearing. I especially liked the scene where he was trying to think of ways to make himself more attractive to her.
'He never thought much about how he looked. He could tell by the way other creatures reacted that he looked scary without even having to try. Everything was afraid of him. And he’d always relished that fact. He’d thrilled in Dani’s fear. Now he badly wanted her to like him. He’d never cared about being liked before. He was so different from her that changing parts of him wouldn’t matter. He was what he was. But maybe there was another way. He’d seen other creatures preen themselves to look as good as possible for potential mates… to look as pretty as possible. He was not pretty. He knew that. But it couldn’t hurt to try.'
I love when the female lead shows the male she loves him just the way he is. But when I read this, my brain immediately pictured him shining his scales, preening, and doing some kind of elaborate mating dance like some birds in the wild to win her over. I had to stop reading for a few minutes to control my laughter and try to breathe again. (How I would love to see little comic strips illustrating this kind of craziness!)
A beautiful, fun, and sweet romance. Another amazing addition to the Vrisha Warriors series! I can't wait until it comes out in audio! 5 stars.
𝐑𝐄𝐕𝐈𝐄𝐖/𝐓𝐇𝐎𝐔𝐆𝐇𝐓𝐒: Where to start? Perhaps at the beginning which was a FREAKING HORROR MOVIE and I was here for every second of it. Kryxis is definitely a multifaceted character. I've never been this creeped out starting a romance book, and yet full of laughter at the same time. Yes, it was a bit quick how he changes from horrific to cute, but you honestly just go with it because it was so fun. Honestly, it was really exciting! Then the story progresses and we see Kryxis interact with Dani and they get a feel for each other, and start to work through communicating. There is an underlying attraction early on but we don't get to delve into it until about 75% of the way in, when things fully heat up. So there's alot of slow burn alongside the world building. Which was okay and it does make for a fun relationship, paired with the language barrier and Kryxis's animalistic nature. He's a murderous monster one moment and a sweet puppy the next. I could see the vibe Olivia was going for with this and I honestly just had alot of fun with it. Probably a favorite of the series overall, though I'm not quite sure what order I'd rank them all in. The humor was really cute and and makes you all smiley, and once the spice kicks in it was really good, and the slow burn had some great kick-your-feet moments.
It was fun, pure and simple. A really really great addition to the series!
I really did enjoy this, but it felt a smidge flat compared to some of Olivia Riley’s other books, almost like an imitation of them. It started off extremely strong, setting Kryxis up as an interminably bored trickster predator, whose interest is sparked by the unaware heroine, Dani, touching down on his desolate planet. For a while, we see him stalking her, mimicking her, toying with her — it's an exciting and enthralling dynamic.
Then they properly meet.
And Kryxis instantly goes from feral apex predator to domesticated pet, eager and servile and infantilised.
The power dynamic that had been so titillating in the first few chapters flips in a slightly uncomfortable way, which is somewhat acknowledged but never fully dealt with. There’s a hint of the old ‘born sexy yesterday’ trope, as he’s reduced to naivety and eroticism. She teaches him to eat pussy and not to eat cat food. And he becomes entirely dependent on her. And she scolds him like a child when he doesn’t do as he’s told.
It lost the sense of romantic fantasy for me there.
The language-barrier arc also felt rushed. Sure, his species has innate linguistic abilities, which is a cool concept, but he instantly picks up words we never see her use and, within the space of a day, can effectively communicate at a B1 level. I found this, counterintuitively, to be a detriment to their relationship development. We lose the sense of focused attention and deliberateness, the compound longing to be understood that can make a language barrier intimate. We also lose a component of the inherent strangeness and animalism that made Kryxis feel alien and intriguing.
But overall, it’s a romp. The story rollicks along, and the planet’s dangers — both terrestrial and bureaucratic — keep the engine trundling on. Dani’s backstory doesn’t feel fully fleshed out or truly “lived in,” yet the on-page character doesn’t suffer for it. She’s generally reasonable and likeable without falling into the standard too-cool-to-fail space-opera archetype. The secondary characters also felt differentiated, though they sometimes leaned into quirky-girl-cringe territory for comic relief.
Alone he has ruled over a kingdom where time has no meaning and memories of before are clouded, distant and bring only pain. A prime predator who yearns for more, his wait will soon be over, and with her newest book Kryxis, author Olivia Riley delivers a sci-fi romance in her Vrisha warriors universe that captures the heart as it brings to life the dangers of a ruined world and all of the secrets it holds.
Planet X110 is one of many that has been visited by Nexacor’s team of collecters who are contracted to recover data, and other remnants from these abandoned worlds, items of value to be eventually returned to their owners, this time for Marityne Industries. Dani is leading the current team in the hope that if she does well she’ll finally obtain the spot she desires in Nexacor’s science sector, and earning the coveted blue suit rank that goes along with it.
But another kind of desire will soon consume her as the team and their security guards make their way through the desolate once thriving city now a graveyard of rotting structures, and deadly wildlife, it’s human inhabitants now long gone.
Dani feels it as they close in on their assigned targets, something watching, unseen amongst the shadows that fill every corner of the buildings, and route they travel. Something that will follow them back to their ship where Dani will face a monster whose kingdom she has entered uninvited.
Kryxis’ main focus soon becomes Dani whose scent he finds a tantalizing tease that has instincts awakening in him unthought of until the moment he saw her.
With a fast paced narrative of adventure, passion, secrets, mystery, friendships, danger, and action this wonderfully written story will reveal who the real monsters are as a wild and untamed survivor of injustice with a childishly playful spirit finds his salvation in a woman named Dani and she in a Vrisha named Kryxis.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I let be and adore the Vrisha warriors!. This book was very different from many of the previous ones. This takes place on an abandoned planet that holds dark dangerous secrets ones that will change peoples loves forever. Dani a child born of an affair always looking and striving more o fond her place and her fathers approval. She and her crew are on a mission to find a list of artifacts on an abandoned mining world if she finds everything she's on track for the promotion to the science division. Being on the science team has been her only goal for years shmexy wants nothing to get In her way! That is until she meets Kryxis. Taken when he was just a child Kryxis does not have many memories before the crumbling planet he calls home. Fuzzy pain filled memories that he rather forget than live through again. when a ship lands near the only place he can remember as home and a femake gets off the ship his whole world changes.Dani an amazing scientist with k owe she's being watched but by what she's not sure . when Kryxis comes out to play she believes he's the enemy at first, but quickly changes her mind when she realizes just why the mining colony was abandoned. To gentler they must fight together to preserve what they have , right for their friends and take care if each other. Olivia Riley strikes again I love her world building as soon as I started d to flip the pages it felt like I was returning to old friends. I sincerely hope she plans too revisit the Vrisha again ill certainly be here waiting ! Highly recommend terrific character development and over all world building🌟💖🔥💖🌟🔥💖🌟💖🌟🔥💖🌟🔥🔥
I had a blast with this one—an actual crew, loyal crew members, friends, a real variety of aliens, and a heroine with experience and a life of her own.
She’s deemed lesser because of circumstances beyond her control, while the hero, kidnapped as a child, has lived in isolation. There’s a good-light kind of insta romance, intense and nerve-wracking dangers, evil scientists from the past, and corrupt corporations. I loved that the heroine actively protects not just the hero but her crew as well. And despite the lighter ending, there’s still that swoon-worthy feeling.
Honestly, I wish this had been a movie. But I wouldn’t dare hope for that, considering how awful special effects are these days and how nobody in the industry wants or seems to grasp the depth of stories like this. Just look at what they did to The Electric State—just no.
The climax did feel a little like "power of the plot" at work, but it wasn’t unbelievable—Vrishas are a very protected species, after all. More than anything, I just wish this book had been longer. I could have read a thousand pages about their experiences, the hero adjusting to his new freedom, the crew interacting, and what lay beyond the kidnappings—why, how, etc.
Overall, it’s a light read—many things are short-lived or brushed over—but it carries darker undertones considering the themes. For me, it was a success. I cannot wait for another (hopefully super long but never dull) story about Vrishas or even other species. Thank you, author, for another wonderful adventure!

**For some reason, Amazon didn't post my original review, so we're gonna try this again, though the story is not as fresh in my mind. So this will be more general opinion of how I liked the story, rather than in-depth details regarding it.**
So this was a fun dive back into the Vrisha universe, and it only makes me want more! (lol hint hint Olivia). I really liked our FMC, and found her character made this quite the enjoyable read. She was strong-minded, yet her actions when scared or backed into a corner were quite realistic.
As for our MMC, he, of course, is made up of exactly what we love about our Vrisha males: Hissy, muscled, and alien. His actions toward the humans were of teasing prey with a hint of suggested violence, which reflected how long he had been alone. Once he started crushing on our FMC, we got to see how sweet and giving he is, especially as he doesn't want to be left alone again, which means pulling out all the stops so our FMC can't live without him as well.
I did enjoy this Vrisha novel, but I would prefer it to be longer. That way, we can have our couples' relationship more fleshed out, which I found to be the only thing lacking. It felt as though our FMC's feelings went from uncertain to spicy over the span of a page. That made their relationship feel less deep or meaningful. By the ending, their happiness felt genuine, but the initial getting together felt rather flimsy.
Regardless, I devoured this book within a few hours and will continue to look forward to any and all future stories regarding our favorite Vrisha warriors.
I am a huge fan and have been following the Vrisha Warrior series for some time now, and I would like to thank the author for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book. I apologize for posting this late; things have been quite hectic on my end recently.
This was quite a different story compared to its predecessors, and honestly, I enjoyed the direction the author took! Exploring and scavenging an abandoned lab on a different planet, accompanied by the unknown, including unlocking its mysteries, made the story exciting to follow. The story reminds me of sci-fi or horror films such as "Alien," "Predator," "The Ruins," and "Splice." In addition, I liked how the author integrated other species and how distinctive each character was, despite playing a minor role.
Looking at the main characters, Dani was such a badass, intelligent, and resilient character. I loved how strong she was and how she took matters into her own hands regardless of others' opinions. Kryxis, on the other hand, was definitely and secretly a (dangerous) cinnamon roll. The way he hunted for and protected her, how eager he was to please, and how patient and caring he was towards her was absolutely endearing, in spite of his intimidating appearance. Finally, the spicy scenes were intense and passionate.
I WOULD RECOMMEND IF 📒
If you're looking for a spicy alien romance novel with featured themes such as "slow burn romance," "predator/hunter and prey," "language barrier," "she tries to k!ll him," "he falls first and rescues her," "touch her and d!e," "double peen features," and "HEA," then this is the book for you.
I haven’t ever read one of the Vrisha warriors books before (that I can recall), though I have read other Olivia Riley books. I haven’t ever been disappointed with any of them, so I gave this a try — and was glad to find I did enjoy it.
This is about Kryxis (a rather mischievous male) and Dani (a woman on a mission to raise herself above her current station in both work and life). The beginning where they “meet” had me snickering. I thought it was both funny (each of their thoughts was given so you could see their POV) and a little sad, and could definitely picture myself in such a situation. I don’t know that I’d have reacted as well as Dani.
Kryxis was bored and needed some form of entertainment; give the guy a break 😂 — and Dani was far too serious so needed someone to help her lighten up (to be fair, Kryxis kind of deserved the blame for how Dani reacted so she did ease up once she got to know him better).
I’ll admit there were moments while reading that I assumed things would go one way, or happen, and it went nothing like I expected lol — I’m happy about that because I like to be kept wondering, though I was pretty upset on Kryxis’ behalf after finding out what happened to him.
Needless to say, I am SO FREAKIN’ HAPPY that Kryxis got his HEA. He more than deserved it.
I think this might be one of Olivia Riley’s best book yet. I have a really big soft spot for Heart’s Prisoner but I think this book Kryxis takes the cake.
Honestly, the way Olivia writes is just so good and always flows so naturally. I love how Dani is so fearful of Kryxis at first but later on grows to care for him. The dynamic is a little bit of an insta-lust once she gets over her fear of him but when there’s a hot alien who’s trying to woo you and protect you, can you blame a girl?
I love the plot as it was a little bit more unique than typical crash landing on a jungle planet and the alien saves her and steals her away. Even Kryxis is more unique than the other Vrishas. And that makes him all the more fun to play with when he finally catches his prey if you know what I mean. 😏 Kryxis has a fun playful behavior that we don’t really get to see in the other Vrishas which is part of why I love Olivia’s work as her characters like Dani and Kryxis have depth of character so we understand where their motivations are and are fleshed out.
Absolutely loved this book, my only complaint was it was too short yet again! And can we applaud Ms. Olivia Riley for the spiciest scenes she’s ever written? The other books were on the milder side but this one had me sweating!
I've really enjoyed this series. The first book, Xora, was my favorite. It had a bit of the same vibe as "The Shape Of Water". Books 2 and 3 were okay, then book 4 was another winner for me with the intensity of emotion and the desperate need to build trust.
Kryxis, book 5, got off to an amazing start. But, somehow, along the way it lost me. Maybe it's me, a case of alien romance burnout.. I couldn't say. There's really nothing I would point to as the big reason 'why'. But, I found myself skimming the last third or so..
One weird little thing, unrelated to my skimmimg issue; at 55% this sentence made me blink. "The pit in her stomach grew". I have seen a couple of writers say this. The pit of the stomach is the bottom of the stomach. Examples of use in a sentence: She had butterflies in the pit of her stomach. The feeling of dread in the pit of his stomach grew stronger. Anyway, you get it. Saying the pit in her stomach grew is like saying the bottom of her stomach got bigger. I was surprised to see it because it's unusual to see a mistake like that from Ms Riley.
Anyway.... if you like the series, you're going to enjoy Kryxis. As a character, well he's a bit of a character. And these books are all on KU, so that's a huge plus. Cheers.
