Good overview of group counseling and 10 main theories that inform group process. Clear, well-structured, and I appreciated the comparative charts in the concluding chapter.

I read Theory and Practice of Group Counseling in Graduate school. The book helps with setting the foundation for facilitating and understanding group dynamics, leadership and principles of group therapy. Although, I would have preferred to read The Theory and Practice of Group Psychotherapy by Irvin Yalom, which focuses more on the group and better prepares Clinicians to manage group conflict and how to effectively facilitate groups.

A useful overview of the main theoretical schools in counseling psychology and their adaption to group therapeutic work. Not a lot of high or low points here. It does draw heavily from some new world existentialists like Yalom, though as is often the case gives short shrift to old world practitioners or off-shoots of this and other theoretical schools. I'm sure its because these are written by and for American rather than European grad students. It would be interesting to see a comparison between what is typically used in programs here in the states and what is used in grad programs overseas.

Okay I really wanted to like this book. The first chapter gave a great introduction but then I was absolutely bored the rest of the way. It felt like a lot of the chapters were repeating and the authors were trying to fill as many words as they could

This was one of the most helpful as well as not boring to read textbooks I’ve ever read. I rented it for the term but highly considering purchasing because I can see myself returning to it.

Helpful. The student manual also has very useful information, it provides the same information but more concise, and other times has suggestions and recomendations that doesn't appear in the text book.
