Emersyn Valis is an author from the east coast, but not the beachy part. When she's not carting her three kids, a cat who thinks he's human, and a hamster who eats Reese's around, she can be seen with a book in her hand or on her face when she drops it from falling asleep and reading.

Right out of the gate, I want to say that I don’t think the blurb and the book match up as well as they should. Based on the blurb I anticipated some serious drama with Sidney and her family. That isn’t the case, she had her heart broken and left. There was obviously some event surrounding the pre-breakup that spurred full-on-breakup but we only get a small glimpse at that.

Simon is a triplet!! Him and his brothers are described as being gorgeous and there are three of them!! Sign me up ;) Any way, I really liked Simon, he’s got this reputation of being kind of awful (mostly because he broke Sidney’s heart I’m sure) but he’s actually funny and nice. He was a really enjoyable character and I loved seeing him and Sidney together, there was so much history between the two (not only romantic) and it made me yearn for the Simon and Sidney to be on the pages together!

Sidney was also an enjoyable character. She is a make-up artist in Hollywood which added a complexity to her character that I really liked. She spent so much time trying to distance herself from the socialite scene that she was born into only to end up in a similarly public arena because of her job. I thought it was interesting to see her try to reconcile her job with her wanting not to be in any sort of spotlight. Sidney has a bit of a flirtation with this guy from work who she refers to as GQ, I wouldn’t mind seeing more interaction between the two of them in the future. For the beginning of the book there was way more interaction with GQ than Simon which could be setting up for a bit of a love triangle. With the ending of the book I am firmly on Team Simon right now though, I wouldn’t count GQ out of the race.

This book read a bit like a diary. I often felt like Sidney was talking to me which was an interesting experience as a reader. It took a bit of getting used to, there were times when it was like she paused what was happening to explain things to the reader and then hit play after the explanation. It was a bit disorienting at times but it was unique and seemed to be well done. I’m looking forward to reading more about Sidney and Simon!

Wonderful!!!

Really enjoyed this book and cannot wait till the next one comes out!

Be patient, a tad bit slow at first but when it picks up you cannot put it down!!! Well worth the build up!!

Sidney and Simon....loved these two and all the rest of the gang.

Where do I start...Sidney, really loved her! She was sweet, strong, independent and sassy. Simon, sexy, strong and really dedicated to Sidney (even though in the beginning it doesn't seem like it). Those two go way back and Sidney was hurt by Simon ten years ago and pretty much closed herself off from him and her family. She made a life for herself away from them with a career she loves and wonderful friends. But she would run into Simon occasionally and kept telling herself she hated (but you just know she wasn't being honest with herself) him. SImon seemed to be watching over her from a distance.

Sidney and her two sisters are close. And they grew up neighbors to Simon and his brother Chase and Dean. I absolutely loved this set up. Yep, the three sister all had a thing for the three brother and they for them. Oh, they are all six a hoot!!!!

Sidney's parents renew their marriage vows and have a party, inviting family and friends. I absolutely loved reading what unfolded during this time. Love, family, friends and a whole lot of shenanigans and pranks!!! Chemistry between these couples was fantastic but Sidney and Simon, wow, slow burn!!!! There love story slowly unfolds and just draws you in. Oh, loved Grandma, she was quite the character too!

What was slow to unfold was that really Sidney and Simon really never stopped loving each other. Loved how Sidney really was true to Simon without really realizing it and Simon let her go so she can really live out part of her dream. But yet they belonged together and deep down Sidney really new it would always only be Simon. I LOVED that!!

Cannot wait for the next book and see the continuation of there story and watch their love unfold as their journey really has only just begun!!

Fantastic characters, plot, pace and love story. Very impressed for first time book for this author. Well done!!!

Highly recommended!!!!

Favorite Quotes:

“You know when you witness something, and you know you should look away, but you can’t because it’s one of those moments, those damn life-changing moments that your brain makes sure to take notes on so that nothing is missed, no detail is overlooked, and nothing is ever forgotten. It’s one of those moments in life that you know instantly will repeat itself over and over in your head until it eventually causes you to change.”

“I need to find this guy she’s dating and slap some man into him. He is turning my best friend and fellow dark side dweller into one of those… those… happy women. My body shudders at the thought.”

“That didn’t sound hot. That sounded stalkerish. See me again soon? He might as well slide a note made from magazine clippings under my door.”

“Grams is one of the few who I have kept in contact with over the years. One, because she is old, and two, because she would have no problem taking me out at the knees and running over me with her scooter.”

My Review:

Emersyn Vallis’s writing style initially frustrated me as I worked my way through this tantalizing story. The narrator and main character, Sidney, seems to have a hair trigger temper, poor impulse control, and the attention span of a gnat; as her childish and churlish thoughts skitter and jump from one incomplete memory, idea, and affirmation to the next. I was frequently at sea, and growing increasingly annoyed as the plot and history were slowly revealed in snippets with a back and forth manner. I couldn’t always tell what she was so upset about, but she was almost always upset. Other than the ever hilarious Grams, most of the characters are over-indulged and selfish rich kids turned adults, whose antics would land the average person in jail. But there were also these niggling and intriguing elements in the plot and writing that kept me reading, and I am ever so glad I did. The dynamic between the families was entertaining and I loved the back stories and humor. The story is being told from Sydney’s perspective, so it is of course skewed by her personal humiliations, immature thoughts, and overwhelming emotions, and since she tends to waffle and is so self-involved and doesn’t focus much past her own nose, I know there is much more to this elaborately constructed tale, and I cannot wait to get to it. Color me hooked, but with 3 more books in this series to go, I may need to attend a 12-step program by the end.

3.5 stars.. I wanted to love it, but I really like it eventually..
I am new to Emersyn Vallis I wasn't sure what to expect. The Story starts off a bit slow and a tad confusing but no worries it will all sorta come together. . I almost gave up, but I never do that so I stuck with it and I am truly happy I did. The humor in this story will have you laughing out loud. I loved Sydney and her roommates. Eventually I fell in love with Simon.

I would recommend this read, while it doesn't have the steamy sex some readers enjoy it does have laughter. Sydney and her friends along with her sister will definitely have you laughing with their fun and witty banter. Will I read book 2? Yes because I don't have all the answers I need..

This book was just okay for me. I found myself struggling to keep up with all of the various characters that were being thrown around, in particular with how they were all interconnected. Even now that I am finished, I honestly couldn’t tell you how half of them relate to one another. There were several spots where the story just seemed to drift with no particular destination in mind, I think the book could have been much shorter and tighter if some of these extraneous scenes were cut out. There were some intriguing plot points that were sprinkled throughout but they sometimes get lost with all of the other randomness going on, and I really have no idea what any of it means because there are literally no answers given in this book. The relationship between Sidney and Simon had a few sweet moments, but most of the time it was giving me whiplash, I couldn’t understand why she was so against him one second, daydreaming about him the next and then pushing him away again. Nothing that Simon did, at least not that we were told or shown (aside from the graduation party debacle) warranted the kind of hostility that Sidney threw his way. I know there are a few more books, so maybe we’ll get more insight into their backstory that’ll shed more light on their dynamic. I did enjoy some of the humor in the book and I liked the almost conversational narrative. A friend recommended this series to me and raved about it, she said the last few books are really good and I am intrigued enough by the ending of this one, so I am going to give it the benefit of the doubt and keep reading to see what’ll happen next.

I read the excerpt for this book and immediately knew I had to read it! I was hooked from the beginning and couldn't put it down (I read it ALL in one day/night)! The banter in the book is hilarious, I was laughing out loud several times. But the sexual chemistry is also very intense and oh so good! I loved the interaction between the McAllister and the Chandler families.

"Just a few more days, and I'm out of here."

Sidney Chandler chose to walk away from her life. She had to step back from her family and… him, to let them all heal and move on with their life. After leaving everything behind, she tries to just live. To finally be in control. Sidney has made a life for herself with friends and a career that she loves. Her best friends Jacob and Lexi help her deal with all of her anxiety with life gets out of control. (some of those moments are priceless… flying shoes, hilarious words, and peanut butter cups ha!) But no matter how happy she tries to appear on the outside… something is still missing.

"All those years of holding onto that dream are gone, as is my nonexistent relationship with Simon McAllister; a man I will forever loath. Even if I have to force myself to do it."

Simon McAllister broke Sidney's heart many years ago. But he never meant to. Getting her to forgive him is never going to be easy. It has been 10 long years and she still hates him. They were once very close, and he can't seem to stay away from her still even after all this time. Only Simon can bring Sidney out of her shell and let the true woman she is shine. And he loves pushing her buttons and making her lose control. They live in the same city, so no matter how hard she tries to avoid him, they always wind up running into each other.

"We might have these moments where we… can get along but deep down we don't like each other."

When her parents decide to renew their vows, Sidney is forced to go back to a life she left many years ago. Everything comes out when she has to go home, where she has avoided all this time. Everything Sidney has tried to bury is brought to the surface the moment she walks in the door (OMG the pranks are hilarious). The secondary characters are just as great and a huge part of the story. We have Simon's brothers… did I mention he is a triplet OMG! We have Morgan and Molly who are Sidney's sisters… plus uncles, parents and a HILARIOUS Grams (the things she says are priceless).

Can Sidney ever forgive Simon? Will she finally find what has been missing in her life?

"My heart is paralyzed, not sure whether to beat or crumble. The disturbing part is that only this man can do both to it with just a few words."

When is book 2 available??? Now… I wish! I am so excited to see where this story is headed. I was so not prepared for the mysterious stuff not to be resolved (why oh why didn't I check if it was a cliffhanger lol). As soon as I finished I immediately added it to my re-read list. I have laughed so hard at the banter between the characters and swooned just as much. The relationship between these two families, will make you question whether your family is as crazy as you thought…but you can't help but want to join them. I love love love Sidney and Simon's back and forth relationship and the sexual tension is OFF THE CHARTS! Emersyn Vallis is definitely an Author I will be watching for and can't wait to read more from her… especially book 2 (quickly pretty please!!!) Every character helps mold this story and make it that much more interesting!

And just because I can't not add it, this is one of the favorite quotes. I love ALL of the Chandler women!

"Five letters across… what is the word for how Sidney is suddenly feeling right now. Starts with an H."

A great read that keeps you on your toes. It keeps you interested right from the start and throughout the rest of the series. It is not only suspenseful but very funny. He author did an excellent job with the details throughout and definitely left you hanging at the end of each book until you reached the end of the series. It was a great escape from reality. I can't wait to read more works from this author. I was given an ARC for my honest review.

This story is completely from Sidney's point of view. We see her pain from past rejection and heartbreak, the inner mental struggles between her stubborn, protective mind and the physical needs and desires of her body for Simon. We see choices she makes in various situations and why she makes those choices. Her reasoning processes was frustrating to watch at times but one understood where she was coming from. The momentum of the story was so engaging, I sacrificed a nights sleep in order to see how it would all play out. I loved Grams, she brought humor to the mix. My favorite scene was the paintball challenge. The description was so clear, I felt like I was there. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves a story of two people overcoming past mistakes, dealing with challenges of hurt egos and overcoming denial and self disillusionment to find love, peace and home. I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Five Stars.

The story of Simon and Sidney is one of young love gone a little crazy. When Sidney catches Simon with her best friends she thinks Fate has turned against her. So for ten long years she avoids her family and her friends from home. Because that night she changed her plans to become what she wanted to be a make up artist. When she starts seeing Simon at places she turns up she wonders what fate has in store for her. Her friends have been telling her she has a type and they all look like Simon she disagrees until one night she realizes it after a blind date.

When her parents decide to renew their vows on their 35th anniversary she has to go home an face her demons. While she is at this four day event Simon and her come to realize that fate has brought them back together or has it. Sidney wants to go back to her regular life without Simon and Simon doesn't want that he want to start anew. Can they finally be together or will fate have other plans. This book ends in a cliffhanger.

I'm not quite sure where to start. I really enjoyed the way this author writes structurally. However, I was confused throughout most of the book. Simon and Sidney have known each other since high school and apparently there was something big that happened back then. Sidney is trying to avoid it and therefore the reader only gets glimpses and half ideas about what it was. The author tends to put you in scene without giving the backstory first. Then she fills you in as she goes. I just found it very confusing to figure out what was going on. Because of that I don't feel like I truly connected with the characters. All of the characters were enjoyable and likable (well except Judith and Priscilla). I especially liked how Simon kept coming back for Sidney. You can tell he doesn't want to give up on her. The scene setting was excellent. Also, there were some little things that happen throughout the book (i.e., the chess pieces showing up) that are never discussed or explained.

This is not a stand alone and does have a cliffhanger.

"Adjounrment (Fate Series #1)" by Emersyn Vallis
3 out of 5 stars

I must admit that I've been staring at my screen for awhile trying to figure out what to write about this one and as a result this review will be quite a bit different for me. I think I will start on a positive note because there are pros to reading this book.

Pros
1. Vallis has a solid writing style. She's fluid and easy to read...I had no issues with her actual structure, word choices, etc. There wasn't any choppiness and I never felt disconnected from the story.
2. The characters are interesting. There is a large cast but Vallis has done a good job of making each one unique, with their own voice. I thought they each brought something different to the story and even though the narrative is done by only one character I really felt like I got to know all the different personalities. Simon, as the male lead, sort of commands the page but never in an aggressive way. I liked his wit and humor and his determination to get through to Sidney. She was compelling and I never liked her more than when she was locked in a verbal sparring match with Simon.
3. The story is intriguing. I was invested in Sidney and her relationship with Simon, as well as the interactions between her family. They were fun and I would have loved to spend the weekend at their holiday get together.

Misgivings (I think this word fits better than Cons)
1. The book is long and that might be an understatement. It typically takes me about 2 hours to read a full length novel but it took me the better part of 11 hours to finish this. Now I don't mind a long book if it's worth it, which leads me to....
2. There is a cliffhanger at the end. When my blog admin gave me the book to review there was no indication that this was the start of a series. That's important because my expectations are different going into a series. With those I know some threads will likely be left hanging and there might not be full resolution. Here, I was unaware and I almost threw my tablet across the room...so be warned.
3. For a long book I felt very in the dark about some stuff. There is a very big event that happened in the past that is alluded to OFTEN and has obviously played a role in where things stand currently. I waited the entire book to get the full story and yet those questions were never answered. I think this affected my ability to really connect with these characters because I had no foundation to build on. I know I would have enjoyed the book much more had I had all the information up front and then been able to witness the aftermath.

So I guess the simplistic answer when it comes to my recommendation is this...exercise caution. This book is a time investment and you will have no resolution for your efforts. If you are willing to commit to it as a series (and I have no idea how many books that might entail) then have at it. At this point I'm committed and I do want to see what happens in the end...even if I'm a good bit frustrated about having to wait for that information.

This...this needs some serious work.

First the synopsis-it is extremely misleading. They synopsis will make you think this is about a girl who had disappeared from her family's lives to not be heard from again for ten years after some major tragedy caused by her. It leads you to believe that she's hiding from everyone and this one guy knows the truth.

What you get couldn't be farther from that. What we get is a typical girl who had her heart broken as a teenager. Who went to college, moved out of her parents house and basically got a life. She hasn't disappeared. In fact she has spoken to, seen and had contact with the family the entire time. She may be an avoider, but certainly not the disappearing act the synopsis would have us believe.

This misleading or contradictory writing is present throughout the entire book. We are constantly told things. This is how things are, this is what I am, this is truth etc etc.... but the actions of the characters rarely support what we are told. We're also never given any real reasons as to WHY Sydney thinks the way she does. If it's solely based on what we're presented in the beginning, then it just doesn't make sense to me.

The first several chapters are all over the place and disjointed. It was difficult to follow along at best. It's funny because in my personal notes about the prologue through chapter 3 I wrote that reading that section reminded me of speaking with kid. They start off telling you about something then abruptly switch to a completely new topic. Only to switch back a bit later. Leaving us just smiling and nodding. Later in the book one of the characters says "You string a conversation together like a five-year old trying to make a necklace out of cereal." Same concept. It's frustrating. And the entire book is like this.

This book also rambles quite a bit. There are several scenes that could (and should) be completely removed, as while fun to read, they don't contribute to moving the story forward. The play by play of the paintball game is not needed. The entire charades game. Again, not needed. A lot of the scenes with the girls working could also be completely cut or condensed.

The book also ends with a bit of a dangle. It seems the author wants to make this into a series. I can't say she drew me in enough to want to bother. It goes back to not supporting what we're being told. If the whole "girl disappears because of some tragedy" theme had been supported and played on throughout the book, I would have likely been drawn in and wanted to know what happens. But since it seems we completely abandon that idea and just get a normal girl, with a seemingly normal family and normal friends, I have no desire to continue. So she got her heart broken as a teen. Big whoop. All of us did. It doesn't do anything for me.

Overall I think the author has a decent enough storyline and concept. IF you can muddle through the excess to find it. IF she had stayed true to the synopsis or even true to thoughts vs actions, this could have easily been a 4 star book.

Adjournment by Emersyn Vallis, (originally published in June, 2014) is not only the start of the Fate series; it's her first book and obviously she's new to me, as well. With all the newness around this author and her book, I had no expectations, other than what was revealed in the blurb and that didn't give much away. The writing style is clean and crisp with the book opening with the voice of Sidney Chandler, who left home several years earlier, apparently broken-hearted.

While Sidney thinks that her method of survival - to run away and maintain strict control over her emotions is the answer to her problems, she certainly doesn't seem happy; quite the opposite, in fact. She comes from a loving family with two older sisters (twins Molly and Morgan) who are in college and grew up with very close friends and neighbours, the McAllister family. They include triplets Simon, Chase and Dean who are about the same age as the twins and who attend the same college. There is mystery surrounding Sidney's departure for New York, where she studied and became a make-up artist working on films.

Once she arrives home to join in the celebrations of her parents Vowel Renewal, it becomes clear that something big happened between Sidney and Simon years ago, that triggered her departure from this close and loving group. Sidney seems not to have even considered the affect that her actions would have on those left behind; she seems rather selfish in that regard and I had trouble responding sympathetically because of what seemed to be very self-centred behaviour. There is plenty of scene-setting in this book to introduce a myriad of characters who will undoubtedly fall into their roles as we go through to other books in the series.

Fate is a complicated series and a complex undertaking for a new author, Emersyn Vallis has managed to create a captivating group of characters to hold the readers attention. The banter between the families is funny and the affection that the brothers and sisters hold for each other is evident right from the start. This family saga has great potential and I'm looking forward to the next book, Hanging Pawns (Fate #2).

Sydney Chandler choose to leave home, to give up her family and most of all to leave the love of her life Simon behind. He broke her heart, he made his choice now she had to make hers. She chose herself. She left it all and started her life anew. She never really left Simon though he was always in her heart. The love she felt for him from their childhood never diminished. When fate throws them back into each other’s sights can Sydney forgive and forget? Can Simon prove to her he’s worth the risk?

My Review – 4 STARS

This story is about Sidney Chandler and Simon McAllister and the love they built when they were very young growing up together. Somehow along the way tragedy had Simon making a tough decision that tore at him for years. The plot takes us through the story of how Fate gives two young lovers a second chance to get it right. Ten years after Simon broke Sidney’s heart Fate brings then together and Simon will stop at nothing to win Sidney’s trust and her heart. I loved how Simon did everything he could to get Sidney to notice him, to get her to see how he never forgot their connection. He knows her better than she knows herself. He has never truly let her out of his sight, watching her from a far keeping her safe and waiting for the day they could finally be together.

I absolutely loved the character of Simon and the fact that he was a triplet made him all the more appealing. Three hot alpha males to love and adore. I very much enjoyed the banter between the three Chandler sisters and the three McAllister brothers. Lots of sexual tension, a little less heat then I am used to in the books I read but when the sex scenes come they are well written and steamy.

Something happened to Simon and Sidney that the author hints at it seems everyone else remembers the accident but Sidney has blocked it out a bit. That part of the story confused me a little there were some holes in the story but there are four more books so I am sure the author will piece it all together. This one ends in a bit of a cliffhanger. All the books in the series are out so no waiting you can get the whole story all at once.

When Simon broke Sidney's heart all those years ago she decided then and there that she was done. Leaving her past behind she goes out and gets the job she always wanted, has a great life and great friends but it always feels like something is missing.

The last thing Simon wanted to do was break Sidney's heart but he never wanted to hold her back. Trying to do the right thing he does something that will make you want to beat him he just doesn't realize it will take 10 years for him to be able to explain it all. Will Sidney be able to forgive him?

The characters in this book are absolutely amazing and will have you laughing your butt off at some of the things they say and do. If you want a fun read, a great mystery and some hotttt and steamy scenes then this is def the book for you!! I cannot wait for book 2 to see how things will work out for everyone.

I recieved this review and was asked to write an honest review.
The book starts out with a first person narration from the main character Sydney and I was engaged in the dialogue and personality of Sydney I read straight through the day! This book was amazing with unique characters. The love interest in a man named Simon and he has a history with Sydney that couldn't stop me from swooning. The way Simon interacts with Sydney is a beautiful friends to lovers storyline I just loved it! Sydney is a witty girl who struggles with anxiety and the grey descriptions makes you feel like your in the story and feeling the same things great work am already well into book 2 Hanging Pawns I give this book 5 well deserved stars and highly recommend very awesome contemporary romance read!

Sidney is an undeniable force. Her voice is so strong and fun. Her anger management is hilarious. The way she struggles and yells at herself to behave, the peanut butter cup addiction, her habit of violent tantrums and throwing things. It’s epic comedy. She’s adorably flustered.

Took me while to get to grips with the story, as you don't get all the facts. I loved the dynamics of Sidney & Simon and how they know each other so well. Once i got to grips with it I couldn't put it down! well worth a read.

Melissa's Review- 5 AMAZING STARS!!

When I picked up Adjournment, I wasn’t sure what exactly to expect. The title refers to a term in chess, suspension until a later time or place. Well, Emersyn Vallis could not have thought of a more fitting title. This book is so impressive; especially considering it is Emersyn’s debut novel. Her writing style is so unique and well-crafted. The way she built up the story, starting off slow, giving us the back story, and then speeding up with the exchanges between Sidney and Simon, it was like my emotions were on a roller coaster. My favorite thing about Emersyn’s writing was her wit. This book is not only witty but absolutely hysterical. I wasn’t expecting to actually laugh out loud but I did, on numerous occasions.

There were so many amazing characters in Adjournment. Not just Sidney and Simon but the secondary characters as well. Sidney has older twin sisters, who are handfuls of trouble and a best friend, Lexi, who has no problem calling Sidney out when she is acting like a brat. Simon is one third of the McAllister triplets. His brothers are equally as sinister as Sidney’s sister and it makes this story so much more entertaining. Sidney’s parents, actually her whole family, is obscure, but in the best way possible. And Grams, well, she may be my favorite. Who doesn’t love an old lady who thrives on saying the most inappropriate things at the most awkward of times? But alas, it is Sidney and Simon who sealed my love for this story. Their chemistry and cat and mouse game kept my pages turning and my heart in a vice. Sidney is amazing. She is full of sarcasm and cracked me up. Simon was a harder call. When I started the book he was just another typical, gets what he wants, rich kid but as the story went on my love for him grew. By the end of the story I was cheering for Sidney and Simon. I am a firm believer in second chances and I hope Sidney is too!! (Fingers Crossed!!)

Adjournment is the first book in the fate series and worth every single penny. I was impressed by the length of the story (369 pages for $3.99?? a total steal!!) and am so stoked that there is 3 MORE BOOKS in this series!!! I know Emersyn has great things in store for Sidney and Simon and the rest of the crew. You can also quote me when I say Emersyn Vallis is the one to watch! She will no doubt be a best seller one day soon! I’ve recommended this book to everyone I know and even some people I don’t because no one should miss out on one of the best books of 2014!! You rock, Emersyn!!

Jaymee's Review- 5 Stars

Adjournment is the debut novel by Emersyn Vallis and if I didn't know that before i started I would have thought she had written several novels already. Her writing style is incredibly well developed, engaging, flows perfectly and it is both clear and detailed. Her attention to detail is amazing and allows the reader to clearly picture the people and places in the story. My favorite part of this novel was the different characters, each one was unique, engaging and added something special to the story. The book is told through Sidney's point of view and I simply adored her. Being inside her head was a fun place to be, she is hysterical and often had me laughing out loud especially with all the references to flying shoes. "Don't throw the shoes." She has been through a heartbreak and some trauma that caused her to run away from her past to start over. The reader doesn't find out everything that caused her to leave her old life behind since this is only the first book in the series but we do know a bit of what happened and the author gives us just enough to keep us hooked. This story is a romance but it also is about Sidney finding herself again. She forced her true self into hiding in order to survive but being around the McAllisters and her family helps to bring her old self back to the surface. She went from a snobbish priss to a hilarious firecracker in the span of this novel! Her childhood crush, Simon, is totally swoon worthy. I can't count the number of times I went "awwwww" while reading this book. The ways he shows his love is absolutely heart melting and the sexual tension between the two of them is off the charts! I am so in love with the idea of them as a couple it's almost ridiculous. Her sisters, Molly and Morgan are amazing secondary characters whose shenanigans had me cracking up throughout the story. Lexi and Jacob are the perfect friends for Sidney and they are very dynamic, realistic characters that remind me of people in my own life. I must say Grams is by far one of my favorite characters of all time, I'm not sure I've ever laughed as hard as I did at some of the things she said and did. Not only are the characters fantastic the plot is captivating and intriguing. The love hate relationship between Sidney and Simon made for an addicting plot but the author drops in some strange occurrences that add an element of suspense and I can't wait to find out what the clues are leading up to in the rest of the series! It is the first book in a series and Emerysn leaves you wanting more and with unanswered questions but it isn't the kind of cliff hanger that has you tearing out your hair while waiting for the next novel.

This is the first book I've read by this author and I loved it! I thought it was going to be a dark romance, but boy was I wrong! It's friggin hilarious !! The main character, Sydney is sassy and has definite anger management issues- but with her family and friends I'm not surprised! The characters are amazing and not over the top! There's just enough angst to balance out the comedy! I just downloaded the second book. Emersyn has a new loyal reader!!

This book came as a surprise. Judging by title and cover alone, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I really enjoyed this book.. so much so that it's 6am and I'm just now finishing it after staying up all night devouring it! I absolutely loved the chemistry between Simon and Sidney. Really, between their families in general. I had more than a few laugh out loud moments! Warning, there is a cliffhanger! I definitely wasn't expecting it and now I need to go find book 2!!

I randomly picked this book to start because it was a new to me author and I really enjoy meeting new authors and learning their writing story. The cover of this book seems to give off a different vibe then the book was, but it ties in with the whole don't judge a book by its cover.

Sidney was different then other heroines. Yes she was strange and as the story goes on you slowly get to see all of her layers.

From the description you wonder what's going to happen why did certain things happen and if you other things. I liked the small mystery that was surrounding these characters. The secondary characters played a pivotal part in the main characters lives. I can't say I loved all the characters but I did like them.

I really liked the author's writing. Being my first book from her, it took me a little while to get into the way she writes. It flows good, but at times it was a little confusing.

Overall; I look forward to reading more books by her. With the ending of this book I feel compelled to continue reading this series and seeing what is going to happen in the future. 3 stars. #2OCCJD

I was given this book in exchange for an honest review so I will be honest and say it did take me a while to get into the story it seemed to have to many characters and got confusing. HOWEVER please stick with it and give this book a chance as it's a lovely slow burn second chance romance, or is it. I'm not sure as I need to read the following books as there is quite a cliffhanger.. I will definitely be getting the rest of the series as soon as funds allow, and I would recommend giving this a go..x

Emersyn Vallis has such a creative writing style, and this is definitely a series that you should not miss out on if you are looking for a book to occupy you for quite awhile (it's a longer series) with a really unique storyline, romance, and lots of mystery!

My goodness, this story has so many layers! The underlying mystery with chess and the pieces were very well played throughout each of the individual books. Vallis has created such an intriguing cast of characters, all so intricately woven in each other’s lives. They are fun, quirky, and so down to earth that you just adore them completely once you get to know them. I love the crazy (REALLY crazy) family feel between them all, and these are only a few of the many things that I loved about this series!

That being said, I had quite a few challenges with the first book in the series, ‘Adjournment,' which introduces you to Sidney Chandler, Simon McAllister, and the very unique characters in this complex story. However, it was a bit slow and somewhat wordy, and left me a bit confused because of this.

Vallis is VERY thorough in her descriptions and events, and sometimes this can really help you to know the characters better and draw you more into the overall feel of the story. However, this was almost so wordy that it became tiring to follow. A lot of times there was such a ramble going on with Sidney’s inner thoughts that I began to feel like I was just impatiently enduring the story and wishing it would just hurry up and get to the point. This was disappointing, because this really is such a good story that it deserves to keep the reader’s attention with a better pace. I would also like to note here that I did not have this challenge in the other books in the series (maybe a little bit in the final book), and it definitely improved and seemed to possibly be formatted a bit differently as well.

I also had a hard time understanding the characters' connections and relationships to each other, which made it a little hard to follow what was going on in the story. I wasn’t really sure where they actually stood with each other. I couldn’t figure out why Simon was calling Sydney ‘Pet’ and where anything stood with him at all. I mostly found myself continuously trying to figure out if he was a total creeper or not. I didn’t understand the way the sisters behaved, their family relationship, and their relationship to the brothers at all. However, as I have said before this really was a great set up for the rest of the series. Maybe I would just would have liked to have a little more to go on in this first book.

The foreshadowing into the mystery was very well done. The snippets of insight along the way did pull my attention back in, however they were spaced very far apart in the story. I am sure a lot of this was intended to keep the intrigue and mystery flowing, but it kept me at loose ends much of the time with the direction of the story.

Vallis certainly has a very unique writing style! I feel that perhaps she truly writes like she thinks, which can actually be somewhat bittersweet. Where it can certainly engage a lot more at times, it can also distance, confuse, and be hard to follow for the reader without a very defined path or direction. I am trying to say that this book walked a very fine line for me with its combination of this, but honestly, I am probably doing the same thing here trying to make my own point. Vallis is a new author, and the writing in each book grew in leaps and bounds.

This is a ridiculously long review, and It’s not meant to take away from my enjoyment of this series. If anything, I just want to convey that going in it’s a bit of a slow start, a bit confusing at times, and the books are long (which I actually really enjoy), but this series is well worth your time. You will meet some fun and lighthearted characters who I believe are easy to relate to once you know them better, and this really is a great storyline. The ending grabbed me for sure, and you won’t be disappointed when you continue through this series!

I was given this book for an honest review.

Guilt, anger, second chances, amends, revenge, and love this sums up how your emotions will run wild in this book. I have to say is wow. Never reading this author before and diving into this book, made me realize this is why I love reading new authors for the first time. You never know what to expect and when you get something great, you never want it to end. This is what that book did for me. Remember you first love, the one that you heart never stopped beating for and then realize that it was only one sided and you have this emptiness in your heart that never goes away. I love that this is not the same old story that they find themselves ten years later and it all comes together and everyone goes and lives happily ever after not realizing the consequences of a lie, a stretch of the truth can cause. That is what this book does. It puts everyday real life situations into perspective and makes you think what happened to us. The characters in this book are written in so percisely that you feel everything they are feeling and more. I love that is starts in the city but then goes elsewhere for the plot to become more intense. Each character tells their story and it all runs together so well being intertwined makes you want all of these people to win in love at the end. Its beautifully paced and nothing seems to be rushed in the book at all. It lets you visualize everything that they are feeling and you react the same way as the characters and that is what makes this book so real. The only real disappointment I had was that is a cliffhanger and I was not expecting that.

Sydney had something traumatic happen to her ten years ago and it has completely changed her. She is not the happy go lucky person she was back then. She is confused, angry and trying to prove to herself that she is in fact in control. Easier said and done when it comes to Simon, her first true love. She sees him sparingly in the city but when her parents decide to throw a anniversary party all bets will be off. Sydney is a very strong but fragile character. I know that doesnt make much sense, but as you read the story you will understand why. She tries to put her heart in the back burner and concentrate on everything but, but it is hard when Simon keeps popping up unexpectingly all the time. Simon. OMG I can only describe him as sex on stick. He is powerful, gorgeous and determined. It is exactly what Sydney is not expecting. So this anniversary weekend is going to be a time not forgotten any time soon.

I know these are the main characters, but really I think you need everyone in this story to make it complete. Now we can not forget Syndey's sisters. They are great. They bring the story to life. They are Pyros, they love to get into trouble and lets not forget that they are also in love with Simons brothers, which by they way they are triplets. More sex on a stick in this book and it keeps on coming. Lexi is Sydney's best friend and I love her to death. She centers sydney when she needs it and that is what Sydney needs at times. Lets not forget the gay best friend Jacob. He is totally awesome too. You've got to love a guy that can touch a girls boobs and get away with it.

This has to be one of my favorite books I have read this year so far. I can't wait to read the book in this series and can only imagine it will get better. I would recommend this author to many people and hope that she gets many more followers. Great book, Great Author, Great time spent.

Copy provided by author in exchange for an honest review.

When I stumbled upon a post of the author looking for reviewers, I subsequently read the blurb and was captivated by the mystery and drama of it. However, when I was about halfway done with the book, I realized that the blurb was quite misleading. It led me to believe that there’s a possibility for a tremendous outpour of tears (maybe) or perhaps a situation where it calls for you to pull your hair out then throw your kindle across the room.

Now, don’t be surprised because that’s how it felt at that time. Apparently, Adjournment has light drama and a little bit of mystery. This is more of a chick lit novel that centers on Sidney Chandler’s relationships, especially with her family and lost love - Simon McAllister.
”When I was a young girl and had my first broken heart my mother gave me some advice. She said, ”Never love anyone more than they love you,” which sounds cynical to most, but watching my parents together I’ve realized now that what she meant was to love each other equally. The day-to-day like of each other will rise and fall, but the genuine love will never be questioned if it’s equal.”
Sidney Chandler is a sweet and feisty character while Simon tends to be a bit caustic and often brews trouble wherever he goes. Both are beautiful and came from rich families. They’ve been neighbors since childhood and since then, they’ve perfected the art of pranks and jokes. I must say it was entertaining to see them match up with each other together with Sidney’s two elder sisters and Simon’s two brothers.

 photo Adjournment_zpsoa4d3cq9.jpg

Emersyn Vallis created such amazing, well-rounded characters. I’m really looking forward to the unveiling of Sidney’s involvement in the puzzle initiated by the schemer/s, unbeknownst to her. I am also hoping for a more in-depth development of the characters and further clues of the directions of the story.

One a side note, it confuses me why after a big cliffhanger in the end of first book, upon advance reading, reviewers mentioned that it’ll be followed by Mea and Josh’s story. Honestly, it only added more unanswered questions about this series and I’m not sure whether to be thrilled or passive about it. Hopefully, by the end of second book, Hanging Pawns, I’ll have at least some semblance of understanding about this whole conundrum.

Nevertheless, I still recommend this book to chick lit readers who are also fond of random bouts of mystery. Enjoy!

THREE STARS.

I went back and forth on how to rate this book. Part of me wanting to give this book 4 stars because it did eventually suck me in, but the rest of me just couldn't do it. There was just too much that I felt was lacking to give it that many stars.

For starters, it ended with a cliffhanger. As I got to about the 95% mark, I had a feeling it was going to happen. Either everything was going to fall into place very quickly, or it was going to leave me hanging. It left me hanging... which was unfortunate because I was anxious to see Sidney and Simon finally embrace their meant-to-be, happily-ever-after bliss. Because I so want that to happen for them. The rejection she felt because of him hurt my heart immensely (more than I expected, actually), and I wanted her to finally get to have him so much. Not to mention, I wanted to see her give in to him because he was trying so hard to win her over. The cliffhanger left a sour taste in my mouth because I was praying the book would end with them together and that, if there was another book, it would be about one of Sidney's sisters.

Another reason I flip-flopped over my rating is because, though I did get into the story, there was way too much that felt left open. And I hate loose ends. At the very beginning, characters were mentioned but not introduced, leaving you wondering who this person was. Sometimes, a character would randomly pop up in a place, and I would wonder, "Where did he/she come from?". Also, the way Sidney went back and forth over how she felt about her sisters and her mother in the beginning got frustrating. All of this improved once they got to the Hamptons house, but it made getting through the beginning difficult.

What really sealed the deal on my rating was the editing. Though it is definitely not the poorest edited book I've read, it was most definitely lacking. Word confusion, particularly then and than, is one of my peeves, and it tended to happen frequently. Also, commas missing with a direct address and misspelled words that spellcheck didn't catch riddled the book. These may be minor, and I'm sure they'll get less frequent as the author continues to write... but they tipped the scale for me and my rating.

I'm kind of torn over reading the next book. I became very invested in Simon and Sidney's love story (and I'm a total Simon fan), but I may break my Kindle if it ends in a cliffhanger like this one did. I was ready for their tale to come to a happy close at the end of this book. I really want to see what happens, but I'm not sure how I'll feel if it continues to drag out.

If you don't mind cliffhangers and can overlook editing errors easily, then I recommend reading this book. If you're like me and hate being kept waiting, you might want to wait until the next book comes out or to find out how many books their story is going to entail before you get invested like I did.

I was given this book in exchange for an honest review.

Books written in first person are a hit-or-miss thing for me. There are a few authors that have forced me to overcome my first-person phobia (yes, that’s a thing). Emersyn Vallis is one of them. Where some authors “talk AT you”, Emersyn Vallis “talks TO you.” She pulls you in and allows you to become a part of the story as if you are living it right alongside the characters.

Adjournment is the first book in The Fated Series. It may confuse you a bit (the original reason for the break up), that’s because what happened to cause the rift between Sidney and Simon can’t be told in one book. There are entirely too many players and pawns to rush the story. The first book sets the stage for Sidney and Simon to try to heal their hearts and perhaps find each other again. It ends on a cliffhanger, but like I said, it has to.

The entire series is centered around Sidney Chandler (a snarky, sarcastic, panic attack prone, make-up artist with a serious peanut butter cup addiction), Simon McAllister (one third of the McAllister triplets, Sidney’s sexy arrogant ex, who still holds her heart), and a long history of events that tore them apart.

Sidney is completely lovable, full of angst and a hair trigger temper she tries desperately to control. Simon is one of those characters you’re not sure how to read. He’s an enigma, but you can’t help but hate love him so hard.

It doesn’t end with them. Every single secondary character, plays an integral part in the history that was once S&S. There’s Sidney’s older sisters – twins Morgan and Molly (both of whom have a penchant for violence, dirty Shirley Temples, and may or may not need medication). Lexi, Sidney’s business partner, best friend and roommate (an avid reader and alien conspiracy theorist, who doesn’t hear half the innuendo that comes out of her mouth). Simon’s womb mates Chase (the know it all) and Dean (the “weak” one)–both are just as hot and intriguing as Simon. Sidney’s mother- aka Madness (who has a Bailey’s addiction), the triplet’s mother Judith aka Pain in the A**, Sidney’s Grams (who has no filter and I really want to be just like her when I grow up), their friends Josh, Brett, Jacob, and Mea… and a few surprise characters along the way. I won’t spoil it.

Full of suspense, snarky humor, intrigue, intelligence, complex characters and plot line–The Fated Series is a roller coaster ride to the very end. With plenty of sexy times, secondary relationships, laughs, tears, and surprises along the way to make it a ride you don’t want to miss.

Embrace the Cups and Fear the Madness–do yourself a favor read this series! Well done Emersyn Vallis I really hated to see it end. I highly recommend the entire series and will read it again.

Sidney and Simon had their moment, but they also had their heartache. When she left home, she left him behind but she never really let him go, her heart always kept him close.
Sometimes as much as fate can be a cruel mistress, it can also be the means by which two old lovers can have their second bite at the cherry. The opportunity to get right what went wrong so long ago.
It may have taken a decade but they are back in each-other’s company have decisions to not only make afresh but to reconcile from the past.
Simon is determined to do everything he can to right his wrongs, to show Sidney that he is a better man, the man that she always wanted to be for her but never thought he could, the man she deserves. And this time he is going to stop at nothing to keep her in his life.
But how can she trust him again, juts how much has he changed …really? Why set herself up for more heartache, I could understand almost ever doubt she had but what I couldn’t get over was the fact that she hadn’t really ever gotten over him either. She has loved him all along and he knows it because while she carried her love for him internally, Simon has never been far from her side, she may have refused to emotionally cut ties but for him, it what much deeper than that, he has watched over her from his self-appointed distance, certain that when the time was right they could be together again. Now it might have been a little on the stalkerish side but I quite liked his resolve that she was always his, it was only a matter of time.
Word of warning though ladies, Simon isn’t a solo act…. Oh no this man has his two equally hot brothers in two and when I say equally hot I do mean exactly that because this delicious alpha male is a triplet, and his mirror images are like him in every way – testosterone overload, yippee!!
You will be entranced by the brothers but when you add the McAllister sisters into the storyline you have a tale that just scoots along, the conversations were funny a with a sensual undertone that lifted the whole story.
I will admit that there were bits of the story that confused me, but I am hoping that as part of the series, the gaps I have now will all be filled in as the other books take shape.
A well written story that leaves room for the reader to exercise their imagination.

Have you ever read a book that makes you squeal with delight? Well, Adjournment was that book for me!! Emersyn Vallis is so incredibly talented and her writing style is so well honed that you would think she has been doing it for years and years!

Adjournment is the story of Sidney, a girl who is sure fate had forgot about her. Young Sidney has her sights set on Simon, a boy she knows is her perfect mate. Although they never really have a relationship they have planned their future together until one selfish act of Simon's part shatters that future and changes Sidney forever.
Fast forward to present day- Sidney shares a apartment in New York City with her best friend and fellow make-up artist, Lexi. Sidney has removed herself as much as she could from her family and former life. She has made a career and life for herself to keep old memories at bay. But that is all threatened when her presence is required at her parent's vow renewal. Sidney will be forced back to a place that she has fought so hard to stay away from, both physically and mentally. Now she will be back where it all began with the man who changed her from a girl who believed in the ideals of love to this woman who thought fate forgot her. Will Sidney be able to hide be hide the front that she has so masterfully perfected?

There honestly are not enough adjectives to describe how awesome this book is!! The plot was so well thought out and the words so perfectly executed! Anyone reading this book will be able to tell that Emersyn poured her heart and soul into every single word!

My favorite thing about this book was the characters, don't get me wrong, the story was great but the characters took it to a whole other level!! Sidney is hilarious! I laughed through out the entire book! Her wit is something else! Lexi is the perfect partner in crime and definitely someone I would want as a bestie!! And Simon, oh Simon, I am still swooning over him!! I didn't think anyone could make the term 'pet' so sexy!!

I still can not believe this is Emersyn's debut novel! She seems like an old pro!! I know you can not see me but I am totally giving you a standing ovation!! You have a very long and promising career ahead of you, ma'am!!
