This book deals with helping you find your Why It Matters statement...i.e., your dream, your personal mission statement, your passion...thus helping you to decide what to leave in your life, what not to

As we gathered to discuss Why It Matters by Brenda Corbett, we shared the thought-provoking journey of self-discovery through which the book led us. As Instructional Designers ourselves, we found the disorganization and incompleteness of the book disappointing. Many concepts were not fully developed and others were repetitive. The description of the book led us to believe there would be more of a process to lead us through the self-discovery. That said, we all got something out of the book and the discussion.

I expected Why It Matters to be a book about mission and purpose, but I soon discovered it meant something completely different. Corbett states that purpose and passion are acts of doing but “why it matters” just is. Your “why it matters” is discovered by reflecting on your past, the stories you tell and the words you use, reviewing your strengths and weaknesses, identifying your passions and your essence. Once you determine your “why it matters” you can see that your weakness are your “why it matters” run amok.

Many of us struggled to get down to one “why it matters.” It is hard to find one thing that always holds true for you. One participant narrowed it down to five and then tried each on for size until she found one that fit. Another participant did not particularly like her “why it matters” which lead to discussions on how to change them and whether they can be either good or bad.

So, why does “Why It Matters” matter? The main reason is to help you to recognize when your “why it matters” is getting in the way of what you really want. Behaviors can be changed by reflecting and taking different actions.

The book felt disorganized and contrived. It had to be self-published. If there was an editor, s/he should find “why it matters” because it clearly isn’t editing.
