TITLE: When People Leave AUTHOR: Leslie Rasmussen PUB DATE: 05.06.2025
When People Leave takes place in 2025 in Los Angeles. It’s the story of three adult sisters who are left reeling after the sudden and inexplicable suicide of their single mother. With questions swirling and not being able to truly grieve, they decide to leave their lives and families of their own and move into their mother’s home hoping to unravel the mystery surrounding her death.
THOUGHTS:
When People Leave is more than a story about loss —it’s a journey of self-discovery, sisterhood, and healing. With sharp wit, emotional depth, and an unforgettable cast of characters, it explores how the secrets we keep can shape generations—and how the courage to face the past can transform the future.
This author writes, or has, for ‘The Huffington Post,’ which would at once disqualify her from my personal library.
Yet I read this book. She has published two other novels, and she has had success with them.
The writing is filled with clichés and overused ideas, includes predictable dialogue, and yesterday’s jokes like those heard during adolescence or from a B-comedy.
She describes herself as a writer for women and their unique causes, which this reader perceives as universal rather than gender specific.
She is not Dostoyevsky nor his great granddaughter.
That said, I appreciate her work.
It is the story of a single mother (shocking?), on her own, raising three daughters who are now young adults.
She tries to be even handed between the genders although in this reader’s mind, obfuscation is often a crime. She elucidates, repeatedly, the positives of Carla and does not delve into the despair that Brian has endured. Which, to me, is like heaping kudos on the nurses and the professors who lived in Kiev while the events at Babi Yar unfolded.
Too deep? Too disproportionate?
While the author’s inclination is to offer a lite story, this reader cannot ignore the unexplained detritus.
I enjoyed elements of the story and parts of the dialogue between the sisters, nevertheless. I also prefer nice endings, so thank you for that crumb. And I believe that her fan base would also enjoy her effort.
Leslie Rasmussen’s latest novel is a compelling story of three sisters negotiating their mother’s death and some devastating family secrets. Rasmussen weaves so much heart and humor through these pages. These sisters live complicated lives that are completely relatable. A story about family and forgiveness.
Great setup for a novel: three sisters return to their childhood home to mourn the loss of their mother and then stay together to figure out WHY she committed suicide. I’m a sucker for sibling stories, and Rasmussen does not disappoint. Charlie, Abby and Morgan share a common upbringing, but their lives have gone in different directions: a stay-at-home mom married to her high school boyfriend, a therapist stuck in a relationship that has gone stale, and a sister in recovery. When People Leave is a wickedly funny look at women’s issues, decisions, residual trauma, and the strength of familial bonds. Highly recommend.
In When People Leave, Leslie Rasmussen deftly tackles themes of grief, family secrets, and sibling relationships without losing her signature humorous style. I raced through this novel, caught up in lives of sisters Charlie, Abby and Morgan who lost their mother, Carla to suicide.. The mysterious reason for Carla’s decision makes for a riveting plotline, filled with surprises and psychological growth for the lovable sisters. Highly recommend.
When People Leave by Leslie A. Rasmussen follows three sisters—Morgan, Charlie, and Abby—as they grapple with the shocking loss of their mother, Carla. After her unexpected death, what first appears to be a tragic suicide sets the sisters on a journey of grief, discovery, and long-buried family secrets. Alongside this mystery, the novel weaves in the sisters’ personal struggles: Morgan’s sobriety, Charlie’s crumbling relationship, and Abby’s overwhelming life as a young mother. Each chapter switches perspectives, layering the narrative with emotion, humor, and an exploration of what it means to really know someone you love.
From the very first chapter, I was hooked. Rasmussen’s writing feels natural, like a good friend sitting you down and telling you a story they have to get off their chest. Her dialogue snaps with authenticity, and the emotional beats land hard without ever feeling forced. I found myself laughing at some parts and genuinely tearing up at others. It’s rare for a book to feel this alive. The pacing was spot-on too; I never once felt bogged down or tempted to skim, which says a lot. Rasmussen nails the chaotic, messy beauty of family, and she doesn’t sugarcoat the ways love and pain can tangle together.
There were a few moments where the writing leaned on exposition, especially when digging into backstories. But honestly, I didn’t care that much because the characters were so real, so heartbreakingly flawed, that I would’ve followed them anywhere. I especially loved Morgan’s arc—her inner battles were raw and painful and, ultimately, hopeful. Rasmussen has a real gift for showing how healing isn’t a straight line but a looping, stumbling kind of journey.
When People Leave is one of those stories that lingers. It’s for anyone who’s ever wondered if they really knew their parents, or who’s ever struggled to forgive the people they love most. I’d recommend this book to readers who like emotionally honest fiction with lots of heart, a touch of mystery, and characters you want to reach through the pages and hug.
Leslie A. Rasmussen’s When People Leave: A Story of Love, Lies, and Finding the Truth is a compelling exploration of grief, sisterhood, and long-buried family secrets. With a perfect balance of emotional depth, mystery, and wit, Rasmussen invites readers into the lives of three sisters—Morgan, Charlotte, and Abby—whose world is shaken after their mother’s unexpected suicide. Left without a note or explanation, the sisters set out on a heartfelt journey to understand not only why their mother left, but who she really was. What makes this novel shine is Rasmussen’s gift for creating characters who feel genuine, complex, and relatable. Each sister brings her own emotional baggage, quirks, and strengths to the narrative, and their dynamic is full of realistic, sharp, and often humorous dialogue that captures the unique bond of siblings. As the trio searches for answers, the story unfolds like a puzzle, taking them (and us) from California to Las Vegas and New York in pursuit of long-buried truths about their mother’s past. This is more than just a mystery—it’s a layered exploration of how grief ripples through a family and how understanding can emerge from pain. Rasmussen doesn’t shy away from the messiness of emotions, and yet her writing maintains a lightness at times that keeps the story deeply engaging and even uplifting. Themes of identity, forgiveness, and the enduring ties of family are woven seamlessly into the plot. I especially appreciated how the story touches on the different ways people cope with loss and the importance of confronting the stories we’ve told ourselves about our past. There are twists you won’t see coming, and moments that stay with you long after the last page. When People Leave is an emotional, thought-provoking, and ultimately hopeful novel that reminds us of the healing power of truth and connection. I highly recommend it!
This was such an great book! It was a tragedy that brought three sisters together to figure things out about their mother secrets she kept and why? The things they found out about their mother could have destroyed themselves but they learned what family values meant! It was such an uplifting and refreshing read! Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I really enjoyed this story about three sisters- Morgan, Charlotte and Abby- who come together when they learn that their mother has taken her own life. None of them can believe it.
After discovering an unknown man’s name in their mother’s will, it leads them to Las Vegas and then to Brooklyn.
Each woman has their own issues- from alcoholism, in a terrible long-term relationship and a young mother who needs more purpose in her life. Each chapter is from a different sister’s point of view. Their mother also has chapters from before it happened.
This journey that they are on is an interesting and emotional read.
Thank you to the author and Suzy Approved Book Tours for my gifted copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This story explores some heavy themes, but it does so with incredible grace and heart. As someone who has personally experienced the loss of a parent to suicide, I found the narrative deeply moving and authentic—it’s never an easy journey, and it always leaves behind unanswered questions. One thing I’ve come to believe is that the truth always finds its way to the surface.
At its core, this is the story of three sisters who lose their mother to suicide and come together to search for answers. In doing so, they uncover long-buried secrets about their mother and their upbringing and begin to better understand not only their mother, but also themselves. Their journey takes them from California to Las Vegas to New York, and ultimately back to California. The dynamic between the sisters felt so genuine and relatable. As one of five sisters myself, I saw so much of my own sibling relationships reflected in their banter and interactions which made the story even more special to me.
While the subject matter includes serious topics, the book itself isn’t a heavy read. It’s filled with heart, humor, and meaningful life lessons about identity, family, and healing. I absolutely loved it and would highly recommend it.
Leslie A. Rasmussen, the Author of “When People Leave” has written a heartfelt, memorable, and thought-provoking novel. The Genres for this story are Sisters Fiction, Sibling Fiction, Domestic Fiction, and Mystery. In this well-written novel, the author vividly describes the scenery and the dramatic characters. The characters are described as complex, complicated, confused, flawed and mostly likable. I love that the author has included both a dog and cat. Three sisters with their own lives and problems are reunited after their mother’s death. The mother had saved a neighbors cat from a fire, which became newsworthy, and shortly after that took her own life. The sisters are grieving, and are determined to find out what the circumstances were that led to this tragic death.
They look for clues in their mother’s house, and question friends and acquaintances. This quest and mystery reveals betrayals, lies, secrets, love and the truth. I appreciate how the author discusses the complexities of love and protection, the importance of family and friends, sisterhood, love and hope. I highly recommend this emotional and captivating story.

A beautiful family saga with flawed, real characters
I enjoyed reading the book and going along sisters Morgan, Charlie, and Abby’s journeys to find closure after their mother’s sudden and unexpected suicide. I don’t want to say too much, because the story evolves and slowly reveals itself and that’s part of the reading experience of it!
I liked the way the chapters alternated between Carla ( the mom), Morgan, (the eldest daughter), ‘Charlie’ (Charlotte, the middle daughter) and Abby (the youngest). The sisters are adult women with their own lives and struggles, who come together to try to solve the mystery of the seemingly happy life of their mother. As they dive into uncovering any clues surrounding her death, they find that their mother had secrets. Big secrets.
This is a slow burn book that delves deep into each character and their histories. If you enjoy personal, character driven family(especially sibling) centered novels, you’ll enjoy it

When People Leave is the story we all need to remind us that there are silver linings in every tragedy. Heartbreaking, uplifting, and at times, hilarious, this novel is essentially a tribute to sisterhood. Morgan, Charlotte, and Abby are all grieving the loss of their mother while struggling to cope with their unique personal problems. As they uncover the shocking secrets of their mother’s past, childhood traumas resurface, new conflicts arise, and the sisters' bonds are tested. Rasmussen expertly weaves the compelling stories of these three women while injecting heavy topics such as suicide, addiction, grief, and forgiveness. But fear not! This story never feels too weighty, as the author's witty dialogue and comical one-liners add a sense of levity. “… four kids under the age of six moved as quickly as a slug and snail racing.” Lines like these made me laugh out loud, and the entire book made me appreciate all the sisters in my life. A wonderful story!
This is a story about family and forgiveness. I found this story resonates with me, as I am one of three sisters, who lost our mother several years ago and had to get together to finalize everything. I could just feel the immense love and teasing among the sisters, creating a complex yet deeply significant relationship. It was a heartfelt read for me, as I just lost one of my sisters a couple of months ago unexpectedly. This was a book I needed at this time in my life, to remind me of the special bond of sisterhood.

Such a heartbreaking and emotional read. While I haven’t lost a parent to suicide, I have lost an uncle, so this story really resonated with me. I loved the mystery aspect of it, as the sisters try and find this mysterious person their mother hid from them their entire lives. I enjoyed seeing the story told from each woman’s POV, as it made me feel closer and get to know each of them a little bit better. The mystery unfolds slowly, but everything comes together in the end. If you enjoy stories about sisterhood, this one is for you!
When People Leave is an emotionally grounded novel about grief, unanswered questions, and the fragile bonds that hold families together after loss.
Leslie A. Rasmussen approaches suicide and its aftermath with care and restraint, focusing less on shock and more on the quiet devastation left behind. The sudden death of the Weiss sisters’ mother fractures their sense of reality, and the absence of a note becomes its own haunting presence throughout the story.
What makes the novel especially compelling is the dynamic between the three sisters. Their shared grief doesn’t erase old resentments or personal struggles; instead, it magnifies them. As they follow clues from their mother’s past across cities and memories, the story becomes as much about identity and trust as it is about uncovering the truth.
The mystery element unfolds gently, never overpowering the emotional core. Rasmussen keeps the focus on how secrets shape relationships how love can coexist with deception, and how understanding doesn’t always bring the closure we expect.
When People Leave is a thoughtful, compassionate exploration of loss and resilience. It will resonate with readers who appreciate character driven stories about family, forgiveness, and the difficult work of moving forward when answers come at a cost.

This is my third book by Leslie Rasmussen, and once again, she has written a story full of emotion and drama, yet laced with humor, preventing it from becoming overly heavy. She has a gift for this.
Three sisters lose their mother in a tragic and unforeseen way, and they go looking for clues as to why their mother would make this choice.
As the sisters hunt for answers, they unearth more secrets and unresolved mysteries about their mother’s past, adding layers of intrigue to the narrative.
I loved that we were given each sister’s point of view, as well as a few chapters from their mother. The sisters interacted so realistically, arguing and bantering, plus they were all at different places in life - this gave the story such an authentic feel.
While the narrative is highlighted with moments of tragedy and grief, it ultimately revolves around the themes of healing, understanding, and closure. The ending, brimming with hope, leaves you with a sense of encouragement. This is a poignant, character-driven tale of sibling dynamics, swirling with secrets.

WHEN PEOPLE LEAVE is the story of three sisters dealing with their mothers suicide. Morgan, Charlie and Abby cannot understand why their mother would commit suicide and go to the house to search for clues. Clues send them to Las Vegas and New York and leave them with more questions than answers. Secrets are revealed leaving the sisters wondering if they really knew their mother.
We see the POV of each sister who has dealt differently with growing up without a father. Morgan is a recovering alcoholic, Charlie has been in an unhealthy relationship for 11 years, and Abby is searching for something more than being a wife and mother.
I liked that we see the POV of each sister and enjoyed their banter. I have four sisters and found all the characters relatable. We also get to see the mother Clara's story unfold. This is a story of secrets, lies, addiction, grief, sisterhood, family and forgiveness
I love books about siblings and books with a mystery and books about smart, witty, and perfectly imperfect women. So, When People Leave was right up my alley. When three sisters--whose lives have taken very different directions--come together to grieve their mother, all kinds of mysteries emerge. Why did their seemingly-happy mother commit suicide? Was she hiding something, and if so, what? Might learning their mother's secret change the sisters' lives forever? These are heavy-duty questions, and the answers raise other heavy-duty questions, yet author Leslie Rasmussen cleverly weaves her narrative not just with empathy and pathos, but with wit and humor, as well. When People Leave is a compelling read that kept me engaged from beginning to end.
When People Leave by Leslie A. Rasmussen is an excellent women's fiction novel I really enjoyed.
I love stories about sisters, and this was fantastic!
There are three sisters that are reunited after their mother has passed away.
The story is interesting as the sisters investigate the circumstance of their mothers suicide. Their mom had saved a cat after a house fire and died by suicide after that.
There is quite a mystery as the sisters try to discover what really happened. They discover secrets as they uncover what happened to their mom.
This story is so full of hope and love.
The characters are well written, complex, flawed and endearing.
Leslie Rasmussen has done it again with another heartfelt, emotionally layered novel that somehow manages to balance grief, mystery, and family drama. In this slow-burn story, three adult sisters set out to uncover the reasons behind their mother’s choice to commit suicide. They dive into layers of secrets that shake everything they thought they knew.
Told from the alternating points of view of the sisters and their mother, the book gives a raw, honest glimpse into sibling dynamics, individual struggles, and the messy beauty of searching for closure. With realistic banter, emotional depth, and a twisty undercurrent of mystery, this is a must-read for anyone who loves character-driven family stories with heart, secrets, and just the right amount of sass.
I have three sisters, and we lost both our parents—so reading this story hit incredibly close to home. I truly believe that grief can either pull a family apart or bring it closer together. For us, it brought us closer, and this book reflected that journey in such a raw and beautiful way.
When People Leave is a powerful and beautifully written story about loss, the complexity of grief, and how love—and truth—can begin to heal old wounds. It’s full of heart, honest emotion, and the kind of family dynamics that stay with you long after you finish the last page.
Perfect for readers who love contemporary fiction with depth, emotion, and strong sibling relationships.
In When People Leave, award-winning author Leslie Rasmussen masterfully weaves a compelling tale of three sisters simultaneously brought together and torn apart by their mother’s tragic suicide. Traveling across the country and back to unravel the mystery behind her death, they unearth painful family secrets. Each sister’s perspective adds depth and complexity, delivering to the reader a nuanced portrait of how trauma can fracture a family—and how love and compassion can piece it back together. Choose When People Leave for your book club. You’ll be captivated by Rasmussen’s powerful story of family, forgiveness, and the tireless search for truth.
As one of four sisters and having lost our mother several years ago, this story certainly resonated with me. This is the second book of Leslie’s that I’ve read and she does not disappoint with her gift of storytelling and her ability to create well-crafted characters. I thoroughly enjoyed reading from all the different POVS of the characters, including mother to the sisters—all woven into a tapestry full of colorful complexities. Readers are sure to read through with good humor and tears as they journey with through, California, to Las Vegas, and New York in order to unveil the mystery, the secrets and lies of the family.
WHEN PEOPLE LEAVE was a unique story about siblings trying to deal with the death of their mother. I really enjoyed this book. The author constructed a story with a lot of very difficult subject matter, but did not create a “heavy read”. There are plenty of twists and turns and even bits of humor in here to keep things on the lighter side. Fun fact, this author was a writer for many famous sit coms during her career!
