A Hopi myth about the eruption of Sunset Crater (now a National Monument) near modern Flagstaff, Arizona. A great tale.
Imagine trying to explain a volcanic eruption while living in the area in 1064 A.D.! That and later eruptions created a cinder "mulch" downwind, which encouraged Hopi predecessors to occupy what is now Wupatki National Monument.
Book is out-of-print but available in booksellers. A great read; mild graphic sex is part of the myth.
A relevant translation (with transcription of original words) of the Hopi legend regarding the Sunset Crater Eruption. For me, as an amateur interested in native mythologies from different cultures, this book is a small treasure. The text is, in my edition, accompanied by information on the history of the peoples of the area, the geology and in the Hopi language. With illustrations.
This author is fantastic! I very much enjoy everything he writes! This book tells the Hopi oral legend based on the actual volcanic activity in the area in the far past. The book has a thorough introduction, the legend with interesting illustrations, and an excellent Glossary. Recommended for all nonfiction lovers, plus those who like legends and stories.
