This is a really sweet second chance love story and can be read as a stand alone as it is a complete story about one couple.

Chloe has had a crush on Jake, her best friend Maisie's brother, since she was a young girl. Jake never really showed any interest in Chloe until one night when he kissed her. They had a 'thing' for a couple of months but it wasn't a public 'thing' and Chloe never felt that Jake was truly committed to her.
When Chloe drops a bit of a bombshell on Jake, he turns his back on her, leaving her heartbroken and feeling abandoned by him.

When Chloe moves away from their hometown to college, she withdraws into herself and begins to self medicate with alcohol and drugs. She has a sweet boyfriend who really cares for her but she has never stopped loving Jake. Jake seems to constantly be flirting with her and this is really confusing for Chloe. He has a reputation for sleeping around and his attention towards her makes no sense.

When Jake declares his hand, Chloe can see that there might just be a chance that he has changed. Can she trust him though after what he has put her through these past few months? Is she willing to put her heart on the line, knowing it may get broken again? Jake is going to have to work hard if he wants to win Chloe's heart and he has no idea what that is going to entail. Is he strong enough to handle what is about to come his way?

I really enjoyed this sweet story. I love second chance love stories and found this really easy to read. Very cute :)

Freedom is a love story involving teenagers and it definitely reads like one. The characters are what you’d expect them to be at that age – self centered, seeing everything as the end of their life, scared, unable to read people and situations correctly, and making rash decisions that end up altering their lives forever. In that respect, Beth Maria did a great job at portraying the age and state of mind of her characters.

Although Chloe is portrayed as the girl with huge problems that got hurt by the big bad boy, Jake, I found her love interest easier to like than her. She had a loving family and great friends, yet she decided for some mysterious reason that they would not help her when she needed them because they’d be too angry. Before that, she dated a known player-type just because she had a thing for her all her life. They were never officially together, had unprotected sex, and when she unsurprisingly got pregnant, she somehow did not expect his first reaction to be utter fear and him encouraging her to have an abortion. I should say she was barely 18 at the time, right before going to collage the next year.

In all honesty, Beth Maria did a great job at portraying the typical teenagers who are acting their age, or even younger. At times it felt they could not be older than 16 or 17, although they were. It’s not the perfect character that deals with everything, or the boy that acts like he’s 5 to 10 years older than his real age. Even if Chloe and sometimes Jake pissed me off throughout the book, it was a good story. Books are supposed to generate powerful emotions, and the author did achieve that in my case.

What took from the experience for me were the small inconsistencies, where Chloe first says she had not taken any drugs from point X (can’t say which because it’s a spoiler), then says she actually did have a bit of cocaine to help her through. Either way, throughout this whole experience, the girl does not seem to go through withdrawal at all. The second one was the lack of build up to her major depressive moment. Chloe goes from happily going on dates with Jake to hitting the bottom. Why the trigger is evident, it’s impossible for her not to have a real buildup, which is quickly resolved by a quick mention of Jake’s on her behavior. The third was the whole bit from Maisie’s point of view. I like multiple points of view in a book, and switching between Jake and Chloe was fun, but Maisie’s bit could have been skipped. All she does is tell the same thing to her boyfriend and debate the issue with him, with no conclusion. Despite all that, Freedom was an enjoyable read and had a very good story to tell.

***I received a free copy of this book in return for an honest review***

This book contains sex, alcohol, and drugs – recommended for 18+.

Freedom is Book 2 in the Mended Heart Series. It is recommended that Book 1, Alive, is read first. There are spoilers in Freedom for Alive and Alive, introduces you to all the characters and their backgrounds.

This is a great follow-up to Alive. In Freedom, we get to see the story of Jake and Chloe fully develop and it also answers the questions we have in regards to their past. In Book 1, there were hints of a history between these characters but they were never expanded on and left the reader excited for Freedom to get these questions answered.

Freedom should be sold with a box of tissues because there were several times in this book that I found myself reaching for one. The author does a fantastic job at getting the reader’s heart racing – from sadness, anxiety, devastation, and excitement. The tears were not just from sadness; there were tears of joy too!

I really loved how this book was written from several points of view. We read a scene from Chloe’s point on view, for example, where she is out with Jake. Then we would switch to Jakes point of view for that same scene. It gave the reader greater insight as to the thoughts behind the characters actions. Doing this made me feel more invested in the story because I knew why each of the characters were acting the way they did even though the characters themselves did not have all the insight. To me it made the story much deeper.

This book made me feel a ton of different emotions and was written in a way that they all flowed with the story. We also got to keep track of the main characters from Alive, Maisse and Jesse. I really liked these characters in Book 1 so I was really happy to see them as prominent secondary characters in Freedom.
I highly suggest you read this book. The cool thing is, you can get Book 1, Alive now and read the two back to back!

This is the second book in the Mended Heart series. Chloe and Jake have been in love since they first laid eyes on each other. Jake has known the Chloe likes him but he has been less revealing in his feelings in the past. This past summer they started sleeping together. Jake didn’t want Chloe to tell anyone about it and she didn’t cause she loved the little bit of him the he allowed her to have. Then something life changing happened. Chloe got pregnant. Jake let her down when she needed him most and now she hates him. Only he realized how wrong what he says was and tried to fix it but was too late. Now he thinks he will never get another chance with her. She has started dating his best friend, Evan. She knows that she should break it off with him because she just doesn’t feel that way about him. Chloe has been slowly dying inside since she had the abortion. She has started doing drugs and has been losing weight. One night Jake has a party and Chloe gets really drunk and winds up sleeping with Jake. Evan found her the next morning in Jake’s room. Needless to say things are over between Chloe and Evan. This one thing starts their journey toward their happy ending. I really loved this book. Just like the first one this one was an emotional roller coaster. I felt so bad for Chloe she lost her baby and the love of her life in one go. She can’t get over him but she can’t forgive him either. Jake realizes his mistake but is too late to fix it and now he feels as if he will never get a chance with the love of his life. I really liked finding out more about Maisie and Jessie’s story. How it was incorporated into this story and continued on. They truly love each other. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series.

This book deals with a heartbreaking decision and the downfall following that and may trigger anguish in some readers that have experienced similar situations.

This is the second book in the Mended Heart Series by Beth Maria and follows Chloe and Jake and their endeavour to find their HEA.

Jake is Chloe’s best friend’s brother and feels an instant attraction the first time they meet. They start a “secret” relationship and seem to be happy until Jake breaks up with her out of the blue.

Chloe is devastated and when she finds out she is pregnant, Jake freaks out and tells her to get rid of it. Chloe is about to start College and without the support of Jake, she also knows her parents, who are old-fashioned, would disown her and not her support her as well. She does the only thing that she thinks is right at that time in her life and she chooses to end her pregnancy.

9 months later and Chloe is still in the dark phase of her life and still trying to move on. She has turned to drugs to cope with her heartbreak and has started a relationship with Jake’s best friend even though she isn’t in love with him.

Jake knows what he did to Chloe was cowardly and he’s still paying the price with Chloe still not talking to him or even acknowledging him. He’s determined to win her back and prove that he can now be the man he wished he was 9 months ago.

This story is filled with heartbreak, drama and angst and will leave you questioning Chloe’s decisions and what you would do in a similar situation.

Beth has done an amazing job of writing from both POV’s and understanding the decisions made on both parts.

I love the Mended Heart Series and am looking forward to the next book in the Series.

Beautiful…just beautiful. This story talks very well about forgiving others and ourselves, about not giving up. Chloe…very strong woman. She went through an ordeal and… It’s amazing how relate-able this story can be. Chloe always had feelings for Jake and Jake reciprocated those feelings, he just didn’t know what to do when Chloe tells him something that changes both of their lives forever. Unfortunately, Jake didn’t handle the situation very well, which led Chloe to make a decision that led her to feel guilt and eventually, turn to drugs in search for a release.

This story hit home, with the feelings of not being worth it to live and trying to commit suicide (keyword being “trying” since Chloe nor I succeeded) but we are both thankful we didn’t, isn’t that right Chloe? (Now I am talking to fictional characters.)

Jake is everything a woman wants in a man. He is so thoughtful and caring… He really earns his second chance with Chloe. Most guys, keep screwing up their chances but Jake stays true to his word and never fails Chloe. He’s there for her through anything and everything. I found myself tearing up in so many scenes. My ebook copy of this book has highlights everywhere. There are so many good things about this story that I just had to mark them so I could re-read them later on. Plus, it has it’s motivational quotes and phrases, which I always love reading about.

Freedom can be read as a stand-alone, event though it is the second book in the series, but it revolves on two other characters. If you want to read Maisie’s story, be sure to check out Alive, the first book in the Mended Heart series.

After getting to know Beth Maria's writing style from the first book in this series, I couldn't wait to learn more about Jake and Chloe. In the first book, the author introduces Chloe as Maisie's best friend and college roommate but we find way more out about her in this book. She has been in love with Jake, Maisie's brother for years, almost since they were kids. She knows that all he likes about her is hooking up and forgetting her but she can't help who her heart wants, can she?
Jake has done quite a bit of growing up since meeting Chloe. Now he must prove to her that he cares for her.
This book has so many twists and turns and secrets between many characters that I just loved how well Beth was able to weave it all together without shoving too many characters in the readers face. Even though Maisie and Jesse's story was told in part one, the reader can rest easily knowing that they both still play a role in this story as well. I thought this was great. Most authors have this way of moving on in the second and third books and not realizing that what made the series great was the original story as well. Putting both of these couples together made this book all the better for me.
The situations that Jake and Chloe have to deal with are emotional, stressful and sad. Chloe seems tough and independent but really all she wants is Jake to love her and to move on from a really bad situation she can't let go of. Jake needs Chloe but will he realize that there is more to Chloe than who she was in the past?

This is a must read by a new author, go check her work out!

As soon as Chloe first set eyes on her best friend's brother she fell in love. When Jake started taking notice of her Chloe felt her life was complete until one day everything fell apart. Jake broke her heart and she was forced to deal with something she never wanted too.
About a year later, she tries to cope with the fallout but the guilt from her mistake eats her alive. She slowly deteriorates, not strong enough to deal with the fallout. It doesn't help that Jake is trying to win her back. But how can she ever open her heart again?
Jake wants Chloe to forgive him. He knows he made a huge mistake and would do anything to rectify it. Can two hearts be mended or will the past never be forgiven?

It was a nice loving story. I was a little disappointed with the story and some of the choices that were made. I haven't read the first book but I kind of wish I would have. At times I found myself more interested in Jesse's and Maisie's story. I felt that this story was missing something. The characters were okay. Chloe was vulnerable and had a silent strength to her but was too afraid to ask for help. Jake was sweet in the end. It took me a bit to warm up to him because of the things he did. Although I think Chloe could have made the right choice.
The sweet ending made me smile and having a baby of my own I know how much stress they are and how much of a treasure they are.
I would rate this story a 3.5.

Freedom by Beth Maria

I'm was give an ARC of this book for an honest review.

Freedom is the second book in The Mended hearts series it is about childhood love, Chloe has loved Jake from the moment she set eyes on him when she was 11 years old. Jake has love Chloe since she walked into his home and laughed at him laughing at the tv.

This story takes you to their college years, where Jake finally notices Chloe.
Chloe is over the moon but she is about to have her heart crushed into a thousand pieces.

Having no one to turn to Chloe ends up alone coping with a heartbreaking decision.

How is Chloe gonna deal with it all?
What happens to Jake?

Will they ever sort themselves out?

I really enjoyed this book it is from different point of views so you get to see how each character is feeling.
It's great that you still get to hear from the two characters from Alive (book one) Jesse and Maisie.
Even though this book is aimed at YA and I'm more old adult I can give it 5*
It made me laugh and it made me cry. So I do advise to have some tissues near by.

LOVE IT.

But of course how could I not? After reading Alive, book 1 in the series, I was overly excited to read this.
The way Beth Maria writes is an inspiration.
The story of Chloe and Jake is beautiful, emotional and absolutely amazing. Beth captures your heart and draws you in to the characters so much that you feel like you're there, like you're actually part of the story.

I loved the way Jesse and Maisie featured too, bringing the whole series together.

I was unable to put it down and reads the entire book in one sitting. The roller coaster ride I was taken on had tears threatening at some points and actual out loud laughter at others.

I can't wait for the next one.

Beth Maria, you amaze me.

I was lucky enough to get a copy of Freedom as an ARC by Beth.

I knew this book would be good, I just didn't think it would blow my mind. I spent all of the book feeling what Chloe and Jake were feeling. I had happy tears and I had sad tears.
I could feel for Chloe in this book. I understood her better then I have any character.
If you want a book that will make you feel emotion, if you want a book that will take you away from everything. Then pick this book. Read this. You will not be disappointed. This is Beth's best book, I would love to see where she goes from her.

TOP read for 2014!

I have to say I didn't like Jake in the beginning of the book. I think he did a wonderful job taking care of Maisie during her time of need the 2nd time around. This book sucked me in pretty fast and kept my attention until the end. Will look for more Beth Maria books.
