The Legends of The Goldens Series is a collection of quirky urban-fantasy romances, about vampire good guys—psychic orbweavers who create, or weave together, real universes. They can shapeshift, telepath, teleport, heal—and make love, not war, with their fangs. Instinctively they rescue both humans and vampires, even when neither is too keen on being saved.
Book II: Dancing Dragons Eco warrior Maggie Maclaurin can somehow see through Andrew’s conjured fraternity disguise: he’s a psychic cousin to the vampires, and with those flying dragon tattoos undulating suggestively across his naked chest, positively an endangered species, definitely in need of saving.
But when real vampires make a pact with the corrupt government to bring a little more nasty on to campus, Maggie’s chaotic human vibes keep Andrew from protecting herby making him sick each time he comes in for a nibble from the neck of this attractive, yet headstrong young woman.
Can Andrew forget about his self-centeredness long enough to gain Maggie’s trust so he can save her from the vampire’s fangs, and, if he does, who will save her from his own?

This book was genial, but extremely confusing. I was halfway through before I realized everyone was living on an alternate version of Earth, and there was a lot of alien terminology that was explained too late -- Golden, Goo-goo, GeoSurvery, etc. Things zipped along too fast, with a lot of dialogue, and there was little real worldbuilding or exposition. Readable, but I got tired of it quickly.
That said, the characters were appealing. In this alternate world, there are aliens (Goldens) and vampires (the traditional Bela Lugosi kind) that were at odds, halfbreed variations of the two with humans, and a clan of humans who are immune to alien powers, and serve as a control on their machinations. The aliens have the power to create and jump into alternate realities, control minds, and shapeshift, which makes them near-omniscient. Both aliens and vampires and have fangs and like to bite humans; in the aliens' case, the bite makes the human bond to them. The story happens when Andrew, a young human/alien crossbreed, falls in love with Maggie, an alien-resistant human, whose uncle is also Andrew's advisor. The conflict, what I could tell of it, happens when Maggie's college is infiltrated by vampires. This should have been a fun idea, but it wasn't depicted very well -- there was a stew, more like a maelstrom, of churning characters but little real tension, danger, or stakes for them, because they had superpowers and were all going to be all right in the end. In the end, the story was a lot of talk and little else.
I did give it two stars, though, for having an alternate-world version of New Hope, Pennsylvania, and Princeton, New Jersey. You don't see that very often. And kudos to the author for having a local landmark on the Delaware as the vampires' hangout.
This was the first book I’ve read from this author, but it came highly recommended from a person whose opinion I trust. Not only was I not disappointed, I was even more impressed with it than I’d expected to be! I loved S.B.K. Burn’s storytelling abilities and the style of writing she uses—the distinctive ‘voice’. It is so simple and easy to read, but each sentence and page packs so much emotion and imagery that you really get a bang for your buck. This is a romantic NA paranormal/sci-fi, But not gratuitous, like so many novels are becoming these days in order to cash in on the trend, but a genuine, sincere level of sexy that captivates from the beginning to the end, and an intelligent, multilayered plot that keeps you invested through the end. Happy to see this author has more books out and I will definitely be reading them very soon! Recommend for fans of paranormal romance and light sci-fi.(
Andrew is a Golden - genetic descendant of vampires - on an alternative version of earth. He meets up with Maggie - a human with supernatural abilities. And he has to learn how not to permanently bond with her... while also dealing with local vampires, UFO groupies, reality jumping, etc etc. And there is also genetic engineered clone robots involved somewhere there.
OK, the concept of the book is good - but it's really hard to follow it. The author tends to go more on the talking only side and has very little in terms of scene switches. Which means the book is almost impossible to follow - one minute we're talking about Andrew, then it's on to the bad guys, and back. Combine that with lack of background (by the way - read the 1st book - you can't jump into this series without it), it makes the whole thing choppy.
*I got this book through GoodRead's Giveaways - an excellent source of interesting books!
Dancing Dragons is the second in a series, but can serve as a stand alone. I like that it included New Jersey, as that's where i'm from. The book started out slowly, but I was intrigued with the vampire/fantasy aspects. I like how the characters are fleshed out and described. Andrew and Maggie can move through portals. This is something I liked about The City of Bones series as well. Dancing Dragons is a good young adult novel, I feel intrigued to read the first part now. Overall I like where this story went and enjoyed the plot. While I received a copy of this book for testing purposes, this review has been written based on my unbiased opinion.
I must be over vampires, because I rolled my eyes through this entire book. It is really well written, but I really struggled not fully understanding the back story and should have read the first book. This does not take way from the author’s incredible story telling abilities, and if you are still into vampires and like Science Fiction, please pick this up and read it. If not, move on. I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
