Love, the ache in your heart when you meet the one. It can take you to soaring heights; and it can leave you bleeding in the wreckage. Loyalty, the thing which binds a Vampire Lord to his children for eternity . . . unless it rots from within, birthing hatred. Betrayal, it comes in many forms and from many sources…love…loyalty…betrayal. War has come to the North American vampires, and Vampire Lords are reaching across territorial lines to strengthen allies and weaken enemies. The most powerful Lord of them all, Raphael, could change the course of the war and determine who raises the final banner of victory. But at what price? And will his mate, Cyn, be the one to pay it?

Third re-read: 08.01.2021
I probably would've had the same reaction as Cyn, though most likely worse. I love Raphael and I'd never want to lose him.

Second re-read: 06.01.2017
Everything to do with Raphael and I'm in. I even re-read the parts (only) with Raphael in Sophia (book #4), and that is just a simply thing of what I'm willing to do to read about my Raphael. As you probably understand: I am completely and utterly in love with Raphael. Strangely enough, I seem to like/love everyone with the name Raphael. Angels' Blood, anybody? :P Anyway, this short novella of Raphael and Cyn is good. It's Raphael, so there's no questioning that. Hell it's good enough for me to re-read yet again. Though it's not the best I've read, as I feel like something is missing to make this one great, but still.... it's good.
“You can’t tell me who—”
Raphael slammed his mouth over hers, yanking her up against his body and tightening his arm around her waist to hold her there.

Quick basic facts:
Genre: - (Adult) Paranormal Romance
Series: - Series, Book Five and a Half.
Love triangle? -
Cheating? -
HEA? -
Favorite character? - Is there point in asking? Lord Raphael of course.
Would I read more by this author/or of series? - Yes.
Would I recommend this book/series? - Yes.
Will I read this again in the future? - Probably.
New Rating - 3 stars.

This was a nice little novella leading up to Lucas' book. In this book Raphael has someone coming for him and uses himself as bait to catch them, which of course pisses Cyn off. Lucas and Raphael's close relationship is touched on in this read. We also meet Jared who takes over for Duncan. Overall a nice little filler book in between novels.

Reread on: 2.11.21
I’ve reread the series many times but have skipped the novellas....I figured it was time for a “ “Raphael & Cyn Novella Reread Day!” I’ve forgotten how much I love these novellas!!

8.15.2012
This was a great addition to the series.... D.B. Reynolds has managed to keep the series fresh by introducing new and exciting character's for us to drool over and still manages to keep Raphael & Cyn included in each story (which I love because I cannot get enough of "Fang Boy")!!

I Absolutely LOVE this series!!! It was awesome to catch up with Raphael & Cyn! This was a great novella leading up to Lucas book, who happens to be a yummy Raphael look-a-like (according to Cyn) except he's an Irish cowboy vamp!!....did I already say YUMMY!! I cannot wait for his book.

This is the novella that precedes Lucas and the war that is coming between the American vampires. It's one of my favourite series so always a joy to read but the storyline here felt a little disjointed as it rushes from midweek to the weekend. That being said the author takes time to reaffirm Raphael and Cyn's passionate relationship but there are cracks that are joyfully exploited. Imagine being mated to a vampire who believes he is nigh on indestructible but there's always a slim chance that someone will do the impossible. Their love is vivid in the readers mind but for Cyn and indeed Raphael too it's still a relationship that needs work. I really like that this power couple struggle as it makes their relationship feel more real.
Best of all though was the introduction of cowboy boots wearing Lucas! That vampire sure does enjoy pushing buttons!

I think Cyn and Raphael rank up there in my favorite literary couples of all time. For sure they are in my urban fantasy/paranormal romance top 5. This story, which was a novella focusing on Raphael and Cyn between the book Duncan and Lucas, was a perfect interlude.

I actually read this one after Lucas, which was phenomenal, and it made me smile to be re-introduced to my favorite Irish vampire cowboy. The story itself is pure Raphael and Cyn, though, and I loved having the focus back on them for a time. Raphael is the perfect mix of dominant, dangerous, and smexy, and I love how Cyn keeps him on his toes.

Cyn... swoons... if I could create my ideal heroine it would be her. She is smart, strong, and not the least bit annoying. I love her to bits and I love her chemistry with Raphael.

For a novella, the pace was tight, the action was good, and the dialogue was on point. My only issue is that it felt a little like a filler book, which I know it was, but I needed MORE and left this one greedy and wanting.

Maybe another full length Raphael and Cyn book? Pretty please, D.B. Reynolds?

5 Fang-tastic Stars!! Terrific addition to the Vampires in America series!! Cyn and Raphael are right up there at the top of my list of favorite couples. When these two are together it's magic! They play so well off each other, and play naughty...ALOT!! Raphael oozes sexuality, his devotion and love for “his” Cyn makes me swoon. No one can topple her defensive ways quite like “Fang boy”. Sweet Jesus, he knows how to make her scream with those pointy teeth and leave her in an orgasmic haze, over and over…my misting fan was set on HIGH!!

Along with the fabulous sexy times is a substantial story that is a nice transition into the much anticipated upcoming book Lucas. The author introduces some new characters and allows us to visit with past favorites. We got a taste of Lucas in Duncan, and I liked what I saw in the cocky, sexy Irishmen. Now after his appearance in this book, I’m salivating and can’t wait to get my hands on him.

There is nothing else out there quite like this series. The writing is smart, sensual, detailed without being boring, and the stories are always fascinating. I can’t recommend it enough.

FABULOUS!

This is a fantastic series and this novella, just wets my appetite for more. The chemistry between Cyn and Raphael, just oozes. The author has a great voice and puts it on the page exquisitely. Top that off with action and lots of sexy heat, makes this book a winner for me. I also thoroughly enjoyed the glimpses and revisiting of the previous characters. Loved it!

I thought this would be a light hearted sex romp like the short stories but before I knew it was tearing up. War is brewing in the vampire world, we meet Raphael's first child, another near death experience, we meet Jared who is Duncan's replacement and beauty between Cyn and Raphael. The final scene where he breaks his promise to her broke my heart, thankfully they didn't separate. This series really surprised me I'm hooked! On to the next!

Steamy Suspenseful Prequel to LUCAS, One You Don’t Want to Miss!

For those of you lovers of Reynolds’ Vampires in America Series (see list of books below) who, like me, can’t get enough of Raphael and Cyn, AND are looking forward to the next installment, LUCAS, this novella prequel is a must read!

Raphael and Cyn are visiting Grand Junction, Colorado when Raphael is suddenly attacked. Of course, Cyn goes into major protective investigator mode and Raphael and Cyn have words about her involvement, but she will not be thwarted. Then a new “right arm” vamp enters the picture, one selected by Raphael to take Duncan’s place (as if any vamp could do that!). His name’s Jared and he’s a cutie. But the real new player we’re all curious about is Lucas. And wouldn’t you know it? Reynolds hit a soft spot with me when she made him a handsome, hunky IRISH vamp, who looks enough like Raphael to be his brother (oh, yeah!), who has been with Raphael since he pulled Lucas off the streets of Dublin way back at the “beginning.” I can hear the Irish lilt in his voice now….oh, baby. Well, anyway, there’s this FBI woman who’s looking for her brother and is coming to see Lucas…get the picture?

The villain in the attack seems to be the Midwest lord, Klemens, who is about to go to war with Lucas. Needless to say, there’s some good sleuthing as they search out the human who did it…and hence, much suspense. But let me not forget to mention the very steamy love scenes between Raphael and Cyn.

I don’t see how you can read Lucas without having this prequel novella. It’s a good one, too!

The Vampires in America series thus far:

RAPHAEL – Western Territories/Malibu - 2009
JABRIL – Southwest Territory/Houston - 2009
RAJMUND – Northeast Territory/New York City - 2010
SOPHIA – Canadian Territories/Vancouver - 2011
DUNCAN – Capital Territory/Washington DC - 2011
LUCAS – Plains Territory/South Dakota Badlands – coming soon 2012

Meh... I was expecting much more...

With the title like "Betrayed" I was expecting something more, but the betrayal was ...

Rather lame...

Also, since this is a short novella, many pages were dedicated to sex between Cyn and Raphael...

3 stars are due only to my liking the world building...

I thought this was going to be another light-hearted novella about Raphael and Cyn with cute romance scenes, and a little bit of vampire politics on the side - Whelp - Nope. This novella was surprisingly more serious and emotional, especially as it progressed. I'm not even going to lie - I did tear up a bit at a certain key moment between Raphael and Cyn. This novella was a nice development to their relationship and made me curious to see what would happen in future books.

I also have to say that the title was a nice touch. When I first read it, I did not give it a second thought because it sounded cliché and it was somewhat like "Duh, that's going to happen." -- However, I did not see the betrayal happen until it was explicitly stated - I am shocked (in a good way).

The plot of this book also set the stage up perfectly for Lucas' book.

Something that irked me? There was a bitttttt of a fat-shaming moment (the protagonist fat-shamed a man). I didn't find it funny. Not cool (no matter what gender or whatever context).

A nice little interlude in the life of Cyn and Raphael. Although it also served as a lead in to Lucas, next book in the series. It made me want to read it even more.

I love Raphael and all of his vampires. Cyn, as always, is great and independent and far away from a wilting flower.

The only thing I didn't like is

We do get to meet an interesting character - Jared, Raphael's new lieutenant, I have a feeling we'll be seeing more of him in books to come. :D

It's always awesome to get more Raphael & Cyn - What a dynamic pair! Raphael may be the most powerful Vampire Lord of them all, but Cyn can go toe to toe with him. Together, they hunt down a sniper and the vampire lord who hired him to kill Raphael. In the process, Raphael does something that Cyn won't tolerate - can they come to terms with it? Betrayed is an action-packed novella that is intense and sinfully delicious. It also serves as a great intro into Lucas's story coming up next. A Must Read!

My Thoughts - 4 out of 5 unicorns - I really liked it!!
***Received the ebook for an honest review from the publisher

The cover is very sexy with that look in Raphael’s eyes.

This is a novella that is about 90 pages, and it is about Raphael and Cyn. This is an adult series with the sexual content it contains, so no kids or teens.

This story does not have as much action as D.B. full novel length books have, and this is added information that is mentioned in one of the other books, but no details were given in that book because they are all contained here. It does give you information about Duncan’s replacement and Raphael’s relationship with Lucas too. I think you definitely want to read this because if you are like me and reading a book and it mentions something happening that you don’t recall reading about…you may start thinking you have to go back and read all of the books again to see if you fell asleep…lol! Okay really I just can’t stand not knowing….it is my curious nature…I just want to know :)

As always D.B. is just amazing with her descriptions and the story just comes alive. She also writes sex scenes that make the pages smoke while you are reading them :) I really do love this series, but I definitely prefer her action packed stories more :)

Even though you do not have to, I recommend reading them in order, so you can see everything happen and connect better with the world D.B. creates and its characters :)

I highly recommend this series to vamp lovers especially if you like complex storylines and lots of awesome characters.

An attempt on the life of the most powerful vampire in North America has been made. The hunt is on to find the gunman as two Vampire Lords are on the brink of war.

In Cyn and Raphael's first novella, someone has sent a sniper after Raphael and the vampire Lord, along with his head strong mate, are searching for the gunman and the one who sent him. The investigation puts some strain on their relationship and shows it's not always sweet words and hot sex between this power couple. I love this pair and think their flaws only make them stronger characters because it makes them more relatable and "real".

We meet Raphael's new Lieutenant, a position left open after the departure of Duncan, and we get know a little more about Lucas, one of Raphael's children and another vampire Lord. We met Lucas at the end of Duncan's book where it's briefly mentioned what's taking place in his territory. We get a better grasp if what's to come and a little more about the Irish vampire himself. It all has me even more excited for his book.

There's a little bit of everything in this novella: action, romance, relationship turmoil and humor. I think D.B. Reynolds did a wonderful job of setting up new characters while not taking away from Cyn and Raphael. Everything worked together great and the only thing I wish is that it was longer. I can't get enough of this series.

Raphael is one of my favorite vampire heroes. He can kill with a single thought. He's ruthless in his punishments. His back story weighs down the heart. And his blood lust adds potency to his already sexual brawn. All the attributes we love about vampires amass into this self-contained Lord of lords. But he isn't without weakness. Cyn, the heroine who stands at his side, couldn't be a better fit. My favorite thing about her is her display of guns. In this 5.5 novella in the Vampires in America series, Raphael dismisses Cyn as a confidant to execute a strategic maneuver that would risk his life. The title is appropriate as this story tests the trust between Raphael and Cyn. It also introduces Lucas, the MC in book 6. DB's writing is masterful and her acumen of tactical terminology and gear is the best in the genre. I highly recommend this series, but it should be read in order.

This was a great novella to introduce the reader to Lucas and give us a teaser for his upcoming book! I am excited to read his book as he is one sexy vampire!! Also it was nice to get more of Raphael and Cyn; I will never complain when we get more of them! Of course the sex scene in this book was scorching hot, but I expect no less from DB Reynold's and her awesome series!
Definately a great read and a wonderful treat to have as we are waiting for the upcoming book, "Lucas".

Well, I'm going to start by saying that Raphael is my favourite paranormal character, against some stiff competition; but, for me, nobody beats this brooding, strong, charismatic Vampire Lord. He acts like a powerful vampire should, and he loves like one too. Raphael and Cyn are a power couple and they are off the charts sexy, mmm. Raphael's PI partner, Cyn, is good by herself, and even better with Raphael attached. Cyn stands toe-to-toe with Raphael and comes off well because of it. Cynthia Leighton is no shrinking violet, she knows how to handle herself, and a gun, and she doesn't hold back from either if she needs to, much to Raphael's consternation....and pride.

In this novella, Raphael and Cyn are in Colarado when someone takes a sniper shot at Raphael. It seems everyone suspects who is behind the 'hit' pretty quickly; all fingers point to Klemens, a power hungry Vampire Lord from a neighbouring territory. In ViA the vampires have territories and guard them fiercely; and it is not unheard of for them to want to poach someone elses territory, if they feel they can. Time for the crew to pull back to home territory so they can plan and regroup. Naturally, Cyn is worried about Raphael, as she is nothing if not protective of him. She also feels that he is keeping something vital from her, perhaps setting himself up as bait for the unknown sniper. But Raphael will do what Raphael will do. Will Cynthia deal with this, or will it put a dampener on their relationship? I like the way things finish here, both in regards to Raphael/Cyn and Lucas. I cannot wait for Lucas, his book has interesting, roguish vampire, and intrigue stamped all over it. Plus, you just know Raphael and Cyn are going to be in the mix with their tumultuous, passionate relationship, yay.

I really like the vampires in this series, there's a relatable aspect to them, but they are pretty unforgiving and they exercise their power quite ruthlessly when required. Raphael is 500 years old, exceedingly powerful, and a wonderful political player; and these vampires are political, they are wealthy and mix business in the human world as well as having their own council. D B Reynolds walks the line of UF/paranormal/contemporary romance perfectly with the Vampires in America series, it's one of my must reads. There is always a mystery and the MC's storylines are well developed and strong.

Betrayed acts as a fine lead in, or prequel, if you like, to Lucas, the next in the Vampires in America series. As the title states, this story is centred primarily around Raphael and Cyn, with Duncan's replacement, Jared, and the next protagonist, Lucas, interwoven just enough to titillate. Looking forward to Lucas - bring it on!

D.B. Reynolds is always a winner with me. I always love seeing Cyn and Raphael interact with one another. They are so tough on the outside but are totally sweet and melty when it comes to each other. I sigh every time Raphael calls Cyn lubimaya.....so sweet.

And this story really has me chomping at the bit to read Lucas' story this Fall. Darn you D.B. for making us wait that long. LOL. I wish I could pre-order it but neither the publishing company or Amazon have made it available yet. . But I'll be ordering it as soon as it becomes available.

Betrayed by D.B. Reynolds
Genres; Adult, Erotica, Mystery, Paranormal, Romance, Suspense
4.5 Stars!

Fast paced
Plenty of action, mystery and suspense.
Lots of steamy scenes. Maybe one too many.

More later........

It's later!

This is where Cyn meets Jared for the 1st time. Jared is Raphael's new lieutenant, taking Duncan's place now that he is lord of the D.C. area. We get great insight into Cyn's emotions and thoughts of Jared. Also detail on who Jared is.

While Cyn & Raphael are in Colorado they become the target of a sniper and the action begins. Not only do they have to deal with the attack, but also the mechanics of their relationship. Some very intense moments.

We are also introduced to Lucas. And boy does he make an entrance! He brings just a bit of humor to the story & we get to see a more 'humane' side of Raphael through his relationship with Lucas.

While I felt there was one to many steamy scenes, they are very well done & I very much enjoyed this story.

I really enjoyed this novella. D.B.'s vignettes are always a nice teaser to keep her readers enticed between novels, but I like the longer format of this and the development of a full plot. I also liked this intimate glimpse at Raphael and Cyn and their struggle with the events from SOPHIA. It had a great ending, but it wasn't all butterflies and rainbows and I appreciated seeing that side of them. Their relationship has always been a little push and shove and it was both good and hard to see that struggle in them again.

It was also a great set up to LUCAS which I can't wait to read. We got a taste of him at the end of DUNCAN, but this gave us a lot more to work with and I'm looking forward to spending an entire novel with him.

I think perhaps my favorite line in this novella was the mention of the "unholy trio" in reference to Cyn, Sarah, and Emma. I'm sure D.B. has much more planned for those three and I'm eager to see what it is and how it torments the men.

I'm really enjoy these "bridge" stories. First, I don't think I can get enough of Cyn and Raphael. They just ooze sexual tension. Yet, in every relationship there are blips in the road and the hardest to overcome is betrayal. This one takes place over about 10 sentences and it still stings. I am amazed how much drama D.B. Reynolds can write in a short novella. I feel ready now to head right into Lucas.

Reynolds has been increasingly writing in a way that causes me to roll my eyes and/or exclaim in disgust. I have never been a fan of her sex scenes, which are repetitive to the point of being rote, rife with purple prose and genitalia lingo that annoys me, and strangely, overly focused on breasts and ripe red cherries as a metaphor for nipples. Ugh!

As I said, I've never liked the sex scenes. Unfortunately, they have become more and more numerous, especially in the Vignettes which are usually porn without plot. The repetitiveness of the sex has become more grating and obvious as it increased in frequency. I can predict the mechanics all too well. Nearly all Raphael and Cyn sex scenes pretty much go like this:

Kissing
Orgasm
Breast obsession for 2-4 pages
Orgasm
Blood drinking
Orgasm
Penetration
Orgasm
Blood drinking
Orgasm

It all takes so long and bores me to death! After falling asleep several times while trying to slog through this tiresome smut, I started skimming, something I rarely do. I like to read every word, but not at the expense of my overrolled eyeballs falling from their sockets.

I initially really liked Cynthia, our heroine, because of her assertive, sexually aware attitude. But her character has become annoying by now. She's overly feisty and defiant to the point of stupidity. Raphael has suffered a similar fate and his growling possessiveness is just too much for me at this point.

Having read this after reading Christopher Pike's Witch World, I was struck by the roughness of Reynolds' plotting, which is simplistic and clumsy. Pike is a master when it comes to plot. His plotlines are so elegant and subtle, deftly foreshadowed and full of surprising twists. In comparison, Reynolds' plotting seems contrived and overly obvious, and forget about suspense - there is none. The wizard behind the curtain is too visible for the plot to feel realistic or flow compellingly.

I already bought the next book, Lucas, but I'm not sure I'll be able to enjoy it, especially with how all the females in these types of series tend towards excessive feistiness, even when it contradicts other character traits. Gratuitous feistiness, it's worse than gratuitous sex!

Our Review, by LITERAL ADDICTION's Pack Alpha, Michelle L. Olson:
VAMPIRES IN AMERICA is easily one of my favorite vampire series out there. It's engaging, action packed, & seriously hot. While Paranormal Romance, it has an arc like an Urban Fantasy that keeps you coming back for more and yearning for the next story to be released. Like most readers of VIA, I craved more Cyn and Raphael, and D.B definitely delivered with this novella. My exact words upon finishing the story were: "Holy hotness D.B!! Yowza! I wanted more Cyn & Raphael & you delivered beautifully. A wonderful continuation from Sophia & the Vignettes, & a great tease for Lucas. I can't wait!". :)

Betrayed delivered the things that we've come to want and love with the Vampires in America books - intrigue, action, danger, drama, and emotion filled scenes - whether they be angst, passion, light-hearted foolishness, or a combination.

Betrayed picks up after Sophia, Duncan and the Vignettes and throws us back into Cyn and Raphael's world of love, trust (and mistrust) and the "Super Secret Vampire Stuff" that is always going on.

D.B revisits a tough spot in Cyn and Raphael's relationship and brings some of their issues to a head in this novella. It's heart-wrenching and beautiful. She also introduces us to our stud of book #6, Lucas, and I for one cannot wait for the Irish Cowboy's book in October!

LITERAL ADDICTION gives Betrayed 5 Skulls. While you can read and enjoy the story without reading the other books, I would STRONGLY advise against it because there is just so much history in these books and they are just too darn good to pass up.

I adore Cyn & Raphael and D.B. Reynolds gives her fans a great Novella to get them ready for the release of Lucas...Loved the novella and can't wait for Lucas!

My Thoughts:

Everything I could want in a D.B. Reynolds book. Cyn and Raphael are one of my favorite PNR couples and I was happy to see them come back in this Vampire in America novella. This novella has a bit of everything relationship issues, action, steam, more steam, and an introduction to Lucas our next ViA hero. I adored it..Nothing in this book was a disappointment except I wished it was a whole book. Yes I am a greedy reader. Thanks D.B for the taste of Lucas, I can't wait!!!

4.5 solid stars for this novella. Only reason this wasn't a 5 star read is cause I wanted it to be a whole book damn it!

They say a good book is judge by what you take from it, now I wonder how you judge a book that is etched in your mind eternally …
Betrayed was a beautifully written piece and I loved every minute of it! Although, why I’m surprise I don’t know, D.B. Reynolds, never disappoints! Nothing she writes is mediocre… And all her books have an addictive quality to it. As always, I love reading about Cyn and Raphael and this Novella portrayed them in Spades. And there were brief moment where old characters we know were mentioned.

Lucas was introduced in this book and I must say I can’t wait to meet him! I love the relationship Lucas and Raphael has and it was … I don’t think there is an adjective to qualify their bond because It was astonishing to read…plus Raphael’s fondness for Lucas was genuinely paternal and sweet!

DB Reynolds is and amazing writer, I love her world and I hope she never stops writing…. Because if she did, it will be a blasphemy! Her books are everlasting and her writing is always etched in my heart for a long time and I can’t wait until her next full novel and novella…I am counting down to the release date! I want more, now!
Oh! I love the Cover Art, it is Stunning! wouldn't you say?

Someone is trying to kill Raphael and Lucas and Raphael's new lieutenant are introduced into the series.

Cyn is against the idea Raphael making himself a target to catch a shooter and the main conflict between them is that he hides from her that he is going to endanger himself. Although the author gave us a bit more drama between them than usual, they are still a great couple. It isn't the type of drama where a previously strong female character is reduced to a doormat.

Some authors could learn from D. B. Reynolds how to write a truly strong couple, drama and all. I hope I haven't jinxed these two just now.

The best part of Cyn/Raphel duo is even when she is driving him crazy, when she puts herself in danger, he never treats her as something less. Cyn is tough on her own and he never tries to diminish the importance of her independence. Raphael just sighs and makes sure she has backup whatever she is doing. He knows and accepts Cyn would do whatever she wants. The same goes for him. They are not a stagnant couple, they change and evolve with new problems and issues as they come. Some of those issues are interesting, some are just the way they deal with each other and some are plain dangerous. The author hasn't ruined them yet.
