Madame Edwarda

Rate this book

Georges Bataille

French essayist, philosophical theorist, and novelist, often called the "metaphysician of evil." Bataille was interested in sex, death, degradation, and the power and potential of the obscene. He rejected traditional literature and considered that the ultimate aim of all intellectual, artistic, or religious activity should be the annihilation of the rational individual in a violent, transcendental act of communion. Roland Barthes, Julia Kristeva, and Philippe Sollers have all written enthusiastically about his work.

- μα..., μπροστά στους άλλους;

Sure, the real Bataille snobs, ähem, I mean: experts, use this hallucinatory tale about an out-of-control sex worker and her mesmerized customer as a gateway to discussing Hegel's Phänomenologie des Geistes (and the preface by Bataille is obnoxiously showy), but I'm a mere literary passerby fascinated by the French transgressive movement, so let's be as crude as the author of this, again: ähem, oeuvre. Because our Georges here also has some very un-subtle thoughts on how apparent moral opposites are connected, and he hits us over the head with his hot takes in this short, surprising story. So the nameless narrator, a man, is so horny that he already takes his pants off on the way to the brothel. There, he meets sex worker Edwarda, who claims to be God, and then they tumble into the night entertaining us with bouts of symbolism. The end.

Right at the beginning, the narrator ponders whether his tellings should have stayed believable, and indeed: This is a fever dream, playing with antagonistic images. Black / white, death / sex, sadness / ecstasy, madness / holiness, fear / desire, you get the idea - it's all there to challenge common perceptions. But mind you: We're talking about common perceptions in 1941 France, this is a historic text, and while some shock effects have always been silly (the narrator is puzzled that God could be found in a crazy prostitute - has he ever heard about the moral ethics of a certain carpenter from Bethlehem?), others might have read as daring and liberating sexuality at the time, but now are merely misogynistic and strangely funny (a vulva is "a wound", "a trap", "a slit"). Fun fact: Some English translations of "Madame Edwarda" are titled The Naked Beast at Heaven's Gate - nice one, bois! *facepalm*

When Edwarda has a breakdown, it remains unclear whether it's a medical emergency or quasi-religious ecstasy. Also, the narrator remains strangely submissive and sometimes passive, without it being clear whether that's his preference, or whether it's a dream-like fugue-state, or whether he is just an incel who has to pay anyways. :-) These hazy aspects are what renders the text intriguing.

Let's read on - more Bataille!

“Madame Edwarda’s thin voice, like her slender body, was obscene: ‘I guess what you want is to see the old rag and ruin,’ she said. Hanging on to the tabletop with both hands, I twisted around toward her. She was seated, she held one leg stuck up in the air, to open her crack yet wider she used fingers to draw the folds of skin apart. And so Madame Edwarda’s ‘old rag and ruin’ loured at me, hairy and pink, just as full of life as some loathsome squid. ‘Why,’ I stammered in a subdued tone, ‘why are you doing that?’ ‘You can see for yourself,’ she said, ‘I’m GOD.’”

She wasn’t kidding. She was GOD. Bataille knew that anyone with a cephalopod kink can count themselves among the blessed. He was also making another important point: if you look carefully at a woman’s labia you’ll find GOD there. But you won’t necessarily be saved, only liberated: “making that love liberated us at last” to the “emptiness of heaven.”

In the story, Madame Edwarda works in a brothel that has mirrored walls and ceiling, which makes sense when you remember that GOD has narcissistic tendencies and a voyeuristic vocation. She reveals herself to people who are perceptive enough to understand what they see and she’s open to an intense personal relationship with anyone (terms and conditions apply). She’s also terrifying: with her squid like parts she could immobilize you and make you submit to her. I don’t know if you are similar to Bataille’s narrator or not, but when GOD touched him, he burst “like a pane of glass shattering” all over himself. He searched for the divine in a room full of mirrors, where he saw himself being seen, and where the object of his desire commanded his gaze. GOD wasn’t passive. At the same time, GOD wasn’t cozy. Her old rag and ruin are symbols of an absolute Other, bringing to mind Gustave Courbet’s painting L’Origine du monde, where you can also try to search for GOD and suffer the consequences.

“I consented to suffer. I desired to suffer, to go farther, as far as the ‘emptiness’ itself, even were I to be stricken, destroyed, no matter. I knew, I wanted that knowing, for I lusted after her secret and did not for one instant doubt that it was death’s kingdom.”

A story written by philosophers brings philosophy to the majority of images. This short story is a strange and fluid view of the madness and convulsions that result from sitting waiting for death as much as eternity and human decay.

This was another read for my thesis on Bataille’s eroticism but I have to say this story did not have nearly enough transgression in it for me. Yes yes I know his préface was all about transgression and I saw what he was trying to do with finding God in the p***y of a prostitute (and he does have an entire chapter dedicated to prostitution in eroticism) but I honestly think that in order to get transgression in the way he meant it, you should stick to Story of the Eye.

Transgression ascends to godhood as a man finds a heavenly visage within a local whore, only to have that beauty and holy wisdom taken from him just as soon as he receives it, as our God/Whore reveals her deification to any that will receive it (in particular a random taxi driver).

Igaljuhul ma olen mitu korda mõtelnud, et mu jaoks on "Silma lugu" üks häirivamaid lugemiskogemusi, eks Bataille ongi ilmselt transgressiivse kirjanduse mainituimaid esindajaid.

Je me rends malade d'y penser.

Tenia moltes ganes, com bé totes podeu imaginar.
