If you knew the future, what would you do differently? Economist and generational expert Rebecca Ryan shares her futuristic view in her newest book, A Manifesto for America's Next Leaders to answer the question on everyone s what s next? ReGENERATION is based on the premise that America goes through seasons. In winter now, America faces choices about how it will evolve into spring, which Ryan estimates will occur around 2020. According to Ryan, America will go through a process that will change how Americans spend, relate, collaborate, work and live.
This was a fast little read but that is as much as I can say for it. Ryan puts forward a curious idea regarding a renewing cycle of civic engagement in the US. However, the manifesto reads more like a simple advocacy for a return towards a more future-minded civic engagement and thus eliminates the need of her cycle-hypothesis. While there are certainly interesting ideas in the book, like her suggestion to rebalance the federal budget so that more investment is geared towards education rather than retirement benefits, the whole work feels unfocused and an attempt to expand a magazine article into a booklet.
Rebecca brings to point some radical and thought provoking ideas. Is she right? I just don't know. She makes very good points and backs them up with solid support and references. Hard not to agree with her ideas and suggestions. A great read if you are willing to be challenged and still are optimistic about this great country of our and the whole world.
The cover caught my attention. I really didn't know what to expect. "A Manifesto for America's Next Leaders" was an easy read. I liked the way Rebecca Ryan has categorized America into Seasons and gave a modern look at history and current events.
