Avery Patterson’s literally not the girl she used to be.

A past that haunted her for years turned out to be based on a lie. Her father was not an evil man. He loved Avery enough to die for her, and now she’s determined to live for him. She owes him that much, and so much more. Ever since she was fourteen, Avery’s been running and hiding from every challenge she’s faced with, but this time she’s determined not to run. She’s going to fight for the broken boy who not only helped to unveil the truth about her family’s past, but also showed her there was hope for the future.

The only problem is that winter is over. Spring is almost through, and Avery’s New York Cop has turned in his badge and taken up his guitar. It’s been three months without contact. Three months without a single word.

Where on earth is Lucas Reid?

It’s amazing how quickly your life can change. One minute you’re patrolling the streets in one of the world’s craziest cities, arresting felons, and the next you’re singing something you came up with in the shower to fifteen thousand people. It’s easy to forget what life was like before. Easy to blur out the events of a childhood that feels like it happened to someone else.
But it didn’t happen to someone else. It happened to him. Luke knows that in order to move forward with Avery, he needs to come clean. But how best to do that, when his demons are so dirty?

It’s easy to write a song. It’s easy to make a crowd chant your name. But finding the right words to tell a horrible truth?

Nothing’s ever been harder.

Title: Summer
Series: Four Seasons #2
Author: Frankie Rose
Release date: February 2, 2016
Cliffhanger: No
HEA

Summer is the conclusion to Winter, which I read exactly two years ago. I absolutely loved that story, it was a solid 5 star read for me, so it goes without saying that I've been impatient to read this book. Winter had the whole package for me, angst, intriguing characters, mystery, sizzling hot chemistry, and unpredictable twists. Although it ended with a HFN, there were things left unresolved and I was determined to see things come to a tidy close. Two years is a long time to wait to read something, so perhaps my expectations were built to an unfair level. I really don't think that that's the problem entirely though. This book just felt like one big, extended pause that never ended. Waiting, and waiting, and even more waiting.

From the onset of the book, we're shown the deep affection and connection that Avery and Luke feel for one another. You see their intense passion and need hasn't cooled one iota since the end of Winter. However, after a short visit to see Luke in L.A., she's back to New York and as far as she knows, their worst roadblock to happiness will be weathering the long-distance that's between them. Until she gets blindsided. By complete and utter silence. One minute, she leaves him blissfully happy, the next he's gone in the wind.

I need to get my shit straight before that darkness leeches out and into the bright moments I share with the most beautiful creature in the world. My broken girl. My sunshine.

Avery and Luke are both broken from their own tragic pasts. In Winter, when Avery needed someone to lean on Luke was right there with a strong shoulder and a patient heart. Unfortunately, when his ghosts start to haunt him and he begins to feel like he's losing control, instead of putting his trust in her and communicating, he chooses to stay silent and run. While I completely understand his painful past and the fact that his lack of dealing with his feelings could lead to fear...I never had much sympathy for him. It's a simple case of conflict due to non-communication which could have easily been avoided.

Instead of having the two of them battle through the storm together, we spend the majority (and I do mean the majority) of the book waiting for him to work through everything...by himself. The entire time mentally pining after her and wondering if she's moved on to someone else. Not once was he fine with his own actions and the repercussions, yet he stubbornly kept up the silence, distance, and left her without even an explanation as to why he did what he did.

Avery was somewhat childish in her reaction to the situation as well. She was rightfully hurt, but instead of simply finding a way to communicate with him, she took her hurt feelings and ran with them. We get to see Avery adjust to life on her own again, she simply spends months of torment in sadness and anger.

Nothing that happened to either of them seemed to aid the resolution of the "conflict". Things happened in his daily life with the band, he spoke with a therapist, he sits wondering where Avery is and what she's doing. Rinse, and repeat. Avery just...exists. There is a surprise return character that influences the plot somewhat, but at one point something happens with him that felt like unnecessary drama.

On the positive side, I will say that reading this book was simple and easy to slip back into after two years, and the pace was fast and smooth however many frustrations I did have. I never had a problem with boredom. Unfortunately, I just would have been happier leaving things in the story where they left off in Winter. Yes, Luke needed to work through his past and his fears in order to have a stable future with Avery, but that whole process felt rather counterproductive they way he went about it. I can see where some readers may feel the intended angst over their separation and still enjoy this, but for me, it wasn't what I had hoped for.

I'm having some mixed feelings about this book. Don't get me wrong, I really liked the book, but maybe because I was totally blown away with Winter, I think this one just didn't quite match up to it. In book one I loved the fact that I had absolutely no idea about a certain turn of events. How it always left me guessing. With this one however, I didn't think there was quite enough to sink my teeth into. With Summer, there's a very different feel to it. Luke has headed to LA to embark on a year long stint with his band D.M.F and Avery remaining in New York to finish her studies at University. The question I knew going into this book was, how will the twosome cope with a long distance relationship? Instead of adoring Luke like I did in the first book, I found he needed a few slaps around the head in this one. Avery, for me, was the star of the book. The way she handled herself with grace and dignity, despite what she had to endure, is a real credit to how she has grown as a character. Now I know at times I became incredibly frustrated with Luke, I really did sympathise with him in many ways and in a way I understood why he did certain things, but my god, the guy is a dumbass at times. Although still an incredibly sexy dumbass. And underneath his 'dumbassiness' is a perfect and caring guy. For me I loved the fact that we went from point A to point B, but something for me was lacking somewhere in between. Perhaps I needed more angst. Maybe I needed more of that chemistry that we were given in the first book. Also a really good antagonist wasn't present so much in this book, where as we were spoilt for choice in Winter. I'm not entirely sure if there is more to Avery and Luke's story in a third book, because I really do feel like I'm missing something. I understand this book had to take a different route to the first, to enable the story to progress and I have to point out that this was an incredibly well written story with amazing characters. As it stands, I really want more from Avery and Luke and definitely more of that incredibly chemistry we have come to love from this couple.

After reading and loving Winter, I couldn’t wait to read the conclusion to Avery and Luke’s story but just when you think their problems are behind them, Luke’s past come back to haunt him.

After the mystery surrounding Avery’s father’s death was resolved at the end of Winter, we thought, or at least hoped, that Avery and Luke could finally move on with their lives. Luke, now on a sabbatical from his police job, is in LA trying to see whether D.M.F. have what it takes to become successful but with his private life still in tatters, Luke finds himself not as committed to his band as he hoped to be. Despite Avery and Luke spending a happy weekend together in LA, what comes next floors Avery. When Luke realises that he has to fight his demons in order to protect Avery he pulls back from what they have, with devastating results.

This series is something a little bit different. From being a cop to the lead singer in a band, Luke draws readers into the story with his vulnerability. The plot is both intriguing and fascinating as you pick your way through the pieces of Avery and Luke’s lives. Both damaged almost beyond repair, they need each other in order to crawl out of the shadows of their respective lives but despite Avery’s strength, Luke is fearful that his past will endanger Avery.

D.M.F. are also not without their own problems especially after Luke finds himself unable to play guitar and the result makes the band mates realise that they have an unbreakable bond and the determination to succeed despite the challenges thrown at them.

I really enjoyed Noah’s contribution to this story and I can’t wait to read more about him. He showed his true self in the care and support he gave to Avery and he became an altogether more rounded individual which I enjoyed.

This is a series that I wholeheartedly recommend. The writing style is very strong, as expected from those who know the author as Callie Hart. I found the start of Summer a little disjointed though and it was almost like the author was trying to find her feet in finally starting to write this long await conclusion to Avery and Luke’s story. That being said from about 30% in I was hooked and read it practically non-stop until its perfect conclusion.

How will I tell you the way I felt wile I was reading this book without spoil it? First of all if you haven't read Winter, the first book in this series, you really should, because this book will explain a few things, answer some questions and give some flashbacks regarding the first book. I was so excited to have this book to read once i finished reading the first one because, if didn't have it, i would be a wreck waiting for it.
I had a roller coaster of emotions while I was reading Summer because things that I thought it wouldn't happen did and when I thought that everything was perfect it wasn't! Dayum, it was insane.
I really enjoyed reading this series and I know you will enjoy it too.
In this book Avery is trying to live her life without the fear of someone find out about her past and about her father because for the first time in years she's free. Avery's father was an innocent man and died to protect her.
Luke is about to live the dream. He's a known musician and with his band mates they are about to conquer the music world, but can they do it? Can Luke fight his demons?
I will not say another word because I refuse to spoil this series. So you will have to read it to find out.

I received a complimenty copy of this book through Crazy Cajun Book Addicts for an honest review.

Summer is the follow up to Winter (Book 1) and at first it seems Avery and Luke can finally make a go of their relationship and be happy but life's just not that easy. Luke and his band D.M.F are on their way to making it big and they move to LA for a year leaving Avery back in New York. Luke and Avery are determined that nothing can pull them apart but what happens when demons from Luke's past start to resurface will he pull away from Avery? Is there love strong enough to survive all that life is about to throw at them?

This is a great read from Frankie Rose its a mixture of emotions throughout that I just couldn't put it down until I had reached the end. I am pretty intrigued as to what the D.M.F stands for and you do need to read Winter before starting Summer but you definitely won't be disappointed.

I'm 20% into this book and already so pissed off, it makes me wanna to smack the author!

He just dumps her cold, after promising her forever, because he's having bad dreams?!!! FOR FUCK SAKE! If this was a paperback, I'd throw it across the room! I don't know how I finished it or even WHY!

When was there time to have a murder trial? Avery was in the hospital for weeks, then Luke left for L.A. shortly after she was released (not to mention when the hell did he recoved from a gunshot wound to the chest that nearly killed him). And how could a serial killer, no matter how much money her family has, be granted an appeal hearing with absolutely no grounds, especially when they have a home movie of her killing the three men she teamed up with to commit 15 murders, and Avery/Iris' father?!!? Ridiculous!!!

As much as I liked Like and Avery, the second book in the series contained many more examples of incorrect word usage for American English. This would not bother me if it were not set in America. Also, the whole writing of the justice system has issues.

Summer (Four Seasons #2) by Frankie Rose is the follow up to Winter (Four Seasons #1). I didn’t read Winter first, and I would advise that readers read these books in order for maximum appreciation. The start of Summer jumps right into an intimate scene that felt abrupt since I had not read the previous book in the series.

Avery and Luke’s intense passion continues from the end of Winter. After a short visit to see Luke in L.A., Avery is back to New York with the only worry being how to maintain a long-distance relationship. Until Luke goes radio-silent and she can only presume that she has been dropped like a hot potato.

Avery and Luke each has a tragic past. In Summer, Luke’s past trauma is haunting him, and he feels out of control. As with most NA romance stories, he doesn’t trust his girl enough to communicate the issue. The resulting drama provides for the standard NA angst. Most of the book is about their individual angst over the losing their soul mate.

The story is told from dual POV with the insertion of Luke’s therapist’s notes on their meetings.

The plot points between their separation and the zenith of the story did not add much to the resolution of the conflict with two exceptions. Luke’s therapy clearly helped him work through his personal issue so he felt he could really be with Avery, and Avery’s (seemingly random) reconnection with a prior antagonist allows her not only closure on that past issue but said antagonist points out that she should not let the love of her life slip through her fingers without a fight.

Overall it was an okay read for me that might have been better if I had already been vested in the characters. Rating: 2.5-3 stars

Be still my poor heart. Holly .... I am struck speechless. I think I was going to go crazy when I was half finished. I think I was going to have to write a letter to the author and let me tell you it would not have been filled with love and appreciation. Thankfully I took my time and finished the book and then took a little more time to calm my self and after the emotional rollercoaster raging in me.

It has been such a long time since I felt so much anger, frustration, sadness, fear and happiness while reading a book. These feelings were just too strong and held me captive all day long.

I would have loved for so many things to be different and I was so mad at the author 80% of the time (hence one star down) but I loved the book regardless. 'How come?' You might think. Well I seriously have no clue myself, I just know that I loved Luke and Avery so damn much and their pain was my pain, their fear was my fear, their happiness was my happiness (you get the idea) and at the end I was doing the happy dance and was laughing like an idiot.

Oh, Frankie Rose. I love you so much.

FLY HIGH, ICARUS

Summer I'd the second book in the Four Seasons series, so to understand this book I suggest you read Winter first.

We begin "Summer" with Luke taking a year sabbatical from the NYPD to help his fellow band members to promote them in LA.
Avery has enrolled in college, in New York, to study Journalism.

As Luke and Avery start off with a long distance relationship and are enjoying life until past demons emerge for Luke and he feels like he cannot maintain a safe environment for Avery.
There are many times I wanted to slap Luke on the side of his head, yell at him and tell him how stupid he really is.
As the story unfolds, it is told from a dual point of view, both past and present, we get to find out how each of them deal with the past and how they are responsible for their own destiny.

Will Luke and Avery have a HEA or will their pasts rip them apart. Only time will tell.

A wonderful conclusion to Avery Patterson and Lucas Reid's story. Lucas goes off to LA with the band to give them a year to try to get a record label to take them on and become a popular and successful band. He felt that he should give his bandmates and friends a chance to reach their dreams. His love for Avery never waivers but his belief in himself and the terrible things he experienced growing up make him question if being with her is good for her. So he stops talking to her and contacting her any way for her own good. He sees a therapist trying to deal with his past. Avery has to go on thinking that he never really loved her. Her love for him never waivers but she's broken-hearted by his actions.

Definitely worth reading.

**SPOILER ALERT**

You have to read the first book to understand what's going on in this one.

And as much as I like Avery & Luke, this story is similar in the fact that i skimmed most of the first half. To much emotional devastation, it kept me from connecting to Avery. So why did I give it 4 stars? Because the overall story is good, but don't go looking for a classic romance, or even a beautiful HEA. It is the journey of 2 people brought together by horrible events from childhood, and they will forever be entwined together for it. So lucky for them that they are madly in love with each other. It's just painful to (read) wade through the emotional trauma that they both go through. Not sure if this series had more books, but if it does, I hope we get some more "happy" to outway the bad.

Avery (Iris) and Luke, linked through a terrifying ordeal and both living with pasts that will have lasting memories and nightmares. Ultimately they are in love and determined to be strong, stay together and live happily ever after. Luke is in turmoil, unable to share his darkest fears and secrets leaving Avery devastated and heartbroken. When news from their hometown comes calling them back to relive their worst nightmares again. A great story I can't wait for more.

The first book, Winter, was sooo good. I have to say I was disappointed in this book. I get that Luke has things he needs to work through but between Luke and Avery there was just way too much drama. Avery in particular got on my last nerve. The same thing with DMF. It was just too much.
