David is a disillusioned American wine broker who meets his partner and best friend, Brian, in France's Côte d'Azur to tour the vineyards of Provence. Brian brings his wife, Vanessa, who David has been desperately in love with for years. David has cultivated his obsession with Vanessa, using it as a distraction from his otherwise unfulfilling life.
As the threesome drink themselves through The French Riviera, David is losing his ability to hide his feelings.
Christa Wojciechowski is an American dark fiction writer who lives in Panama. She is the author of the SICK series and the founder of the Writers' Mastermind virtual writing community.
Christa's novella "Popsicle" was a semi-finalist in Coverfly's Cinematic Short Story Competition and will be published by Bloodshot Books in 2021. Her short story, "Observer Dependent Universe" will be featured in the upcoming "Chiral Mad 5" anthology, and “Blood Sisters” will be featured in “Shadow Atlas: Dark Landscapes of the Americas.”
Christa Wojciechowski is a member of the Horror Writers Association. She loves to play Chopin (badly) and sip Hendrick’s gin. When she is not reading or writing, she can be found rambling through the Panamanian wilderness with her two dogs or traveling with her dashing husband, Marco.
For those of you who have not had the pleasure of losing yourself in Christa Wojo’s words, all I can say is I am so very sorry for you. Her blog, My Sweet Delirium, is a work of art in and of itself, full of magical phrases, rhythmic passages, and divine ruminations, all wrapped up in an incredibly sensual package that just keeps you wanting more.
Interestingly enough, I could say the same of Wojo’s first foray into the world of fiction, The Wrong David.
The Wrong David follows Brian, Vanessa, and David as they schmooze up their wine suppliers throughout Provence. Best friends since childhood, David is the nerd Brian rescued from obscurity and continues to love into adulthood, the men building a successful business together; Vanessa is Brian’s wife, loved by Brian, coveted by David.
The threesome make for a very entertaining, sexually wrought, wistful romp throughout the beaches and streets of Marseille, leaving you on the edge of your seat up until the very last word, wondering what choices they will make, what lives they will destroy.
Wojo’s writing is gorgeous and reminds me of The Talented Mr. Ripley, not so much the book, but the movie, for her words and descriptions are as beautiful as that movie’s young stars.
"Her powerful presence was like that of a goddess and Marlene Dietrich mixed with the occasional swagger of a teenage boy from Long Island. She was amazing."
"Even when I pretended to be my coolest, I always felt the world spinning under my feet when Vanessa was near. She was the world. Life itself."
I loved this little book and highly recommend you take an afternoon to yourself, grab a bottle of wine, and get lost in Marseille and The Wrong David.
And there definitely is a right time so choose carefully. A short read like this needs to be undisturbed and swallowed whole so that the momentum doesn't get the chance to subside. This is a clever little tale that may catch you off guard. The characters are well written and totally believable: I bet there are equivalents of nerdy David, nice Brian, and irritatingly perfect Vanessa on nearly every college campus. But now the trio are sharing the heady delights of Marseille three has definitely become a crowd. Fuelled by boozy days and nights of over-indulgence David finds a voice we didn't think he had. The scene is set for a perfect indiscretion - but there's a twist in the tail!
I swallowed this novelette in about 1 hour - I absolutely loved it! It's refreshing, it's of a genre that I haven't read in a while and today I realized how much I've missed it. I'm a big fan of Francoise Sagan, and this story gave me the same unforgettable vibe that you tend to carry with you through your life. I'm always amazed by authors who manage to say a lot in a few words - and this is a perfect example! Would you like to take a little trip to the South of France? Read this novelette. You won't regret it. Thank you, Christa Wojo!
Anyone who has ever secretly longed for the significant other of a close friend will immediately identify with this well-written story set in the South of France. The dialog is sharp and the characters believable. The writing is both funny and poignant. The Wrong David entertains and delivers. Nicely done.
I thoroughly enjoyed this little novellete and read it in only one sitting. It is very good written, light and keeps things simple. It is also a realistic - though it's fiction - story.
I'll try my best and not giveaway spoilers.
So we have this one "happy" married couple consisted of David's high school best friend Brian and Vannesa - Brian's wife. David has a very long crush on her since, like, forever. On their trip to France the only one who manages to be a little sober, after a night out in a club, is none other than Vannesa. But,will David tell her finally how he feels about her, even if this means destroying his friendship with Brian ?
Looking forward in reading more from Christa in the future !
This short novelette was a surprise. I love this author's dark work, this one is a lighter read, and none the worse for it. It hooks you and leads you through the story easily and I read it at one sitting, needing to know how it ended. Very clever story twist, but no spoilers here. I loved the non traditional approach to the usual romance, unrequited love story. This author is one to watch, her work goes beyond the usual story. You Tube Review: https://youtu.be/qrR6yVQBSpY
Really enjoyable short story. I empathised totally with David, the narrator, and recognised the other 3 characters. A story very simply told but all the better for it.
