If I could have jumped into the pages of this book, I would have became a murderer.
Sherry Burton is one of my favorite authors. The Jerry McNeal series and the Orphan Train series are two immensely different kinds of stories, but nothing in those series or any of her other books had prepared me for this book.
I'm very careful when I chose psychological thrillers because I tend to get involved but the intensity of this book drew me into to the point that I wanted to stop reading, put the book far away and walk away, but I couldn't.
When Abby arrived at her new home in Louisiana, she was depressed and lonely. She had everything she owned, including her beloved animals in her car. Something nagged at het, telling her she was making a huge mistake, again. But, what did she have to lose. After all, she'd already post her husband to drugs and shortly afterward her parents died of carbon monoxide poisoning. Maybe this really was the man she should have married directly out of high school.
Jacob was handsome, caring, kind and rich. He was patient enough to have waited for her most of her life, every since he had saved her from a house fire when she was four years old. He said he loved her and would wait until she was ready to marry.
Life with Jacob in his beautiful home that he had remodelled just for her was indeed peaceful and quiet. He took her to dinner in some beautiful restaurants in town, showered her with attention and gifts. Still she knew she didn't love him and wondered if she ever could.
Then while on a walk along the riverfront streets, someone bumped into her, stealing her purse. Jacob warned her to stay right there while he pushed the thief. Curiosity and worry got the best of her when he was gone for a long time. She went in search of him. What if her had ended upharmed. While searching and in tears an ugly old woman wrapped her in wrinkled arms and told her Jacob was fine but she Warned her in cajan That she eeded to worry about herself.
Jacob was livid when he returned and found Abby gone . Abby tried to explain that she was worried, then explained about the old lady who spoke to her in French which she hadn't understood. Jacob laughed telling her the old lady told her to get a away from him that he was too old for her. They both laughed off the comments.
Two days later Jacob showed her a picture in the paper and asked if it was the old lady who spoke to her. The article said the old lady, a cajhan priestess had been found with her throat slit and her tongue cut out. But why? Jacob shrugged, "Sounds as if someone was telling her to mind her own business."
