Ive been on a sci fi kick recently and had this author recommended to me but I fear I've made a tiny mistake and this is the second in a series. That being said I thought this story started with a bang and never let the pace slow. I admit I've missed a little of the background and world building but nevertheless I found this to be an entertaining read.
The Phoenix brothers are treasure hunters and this book focuses on Zayn, whose past haunts him and his new mission is about to truly test his mettle. Ria is an assassin but she desperately wants to leave the Guild but that's impossible or is it? Ria has a cunning plan but she needs the Phoenix boys to help her. Ok so finally her plan is operable but there's a really big fly in the ointment because every time Zayn looks at her it's the face of a dead woman looking back at him, a woman he killed!
I really liked the idea of these treasure hunting brothers searching for old earth artefacts. Yes it's an adventure story with a strong romance running through it but the more poignant moments really helped to open it up. There's a huge twist with corruption and secrecy to uncover and although the end seemed almost too pat I didn't really mind. What has me screaming though is the mystery thief Nera Darc and I can't wait to learn more about her. So bottom line I liked it and would read more by this author but my favourite character has to be a certain teenage bomb maker who quite literally blew me away! Fast, fun and entertaining

I love the Phoenix brothers! :)

Another great addition to the series!

I'm looking forward to Nera Darc and Niklas' story, or, at least I hope they will have their story!! I don't know when or if Ms. Hackett will write it, since the n° 5 book in the series (Beyond Galaxy's Edge) is about the cousin of the Phoenix brothers... But I can still hope! :)

The treasure-hunting Phoenix brothers find themselves on an impossible hunt for an old earth (Terrain) artifact once again. Following the events from the first book, At Star’s End, the story begins with the trio of Phoenix brothers trying to figure out who keeps stealing their discoveries from under them. This leads them to Ria, an assassin with the Assassin Guild, who wants to do the impossible: leave the Guild. She implores the brothers and Dathan’s wife, Eos, to help her steal an artifact from the Guild so that she can use it to bargain for her freedom. However, Zayn, the youngest brother, only sees his former Wing Commander, Viktoria, in Ria’s face, convinced Ria is his lost comrade and the focus of his unrequited feelings left behind years ago. Now Zayn must put his past behind him if he hopes to heal his unseen wounds and move forward.

In the Devil’s Nebula is an enjoyable sci-fi romance, full of exciting adventure and a few twists and turns that give the story added depth. Zayn and Ria share an immediate attraction, but it is clouded because of Zayn’s memories of the woman he lost two years prior to their meeting. I appreciate that Zayn confronts Ria near the beginning of the book, rather than keeps his thoughts that Ria is really Vik to himself. Zayn’s struggles to see Ria as her own person, rather than the ghost of Vik, gives this story an emotional punch. I found myself sympathizing with both Ria and Zayn in what, at times, felt like an impossible situation.

Although the story is full of action and adventure, there are several more poignant moments. As the details of Zayn’s past come to light, I found myself moved by some of the powerful scenes. In addition, Ria’s history isn’t so peachy, either. As Ria gets closer to the freedom she so desperately craves, her options become reduced. Together with Zayn, she discovers a horrific coverup, creating internal turmoil that threatens more than her own life. These more difficult scenes give In the Devil’s Nebula added depth, creating a fuller, richer story.

The action and adventure make In the Devil’s Nebula a fun read. However, I was confused at first (which required a reread) on what exactly Ria planned to do to gain her freedom. I also felt it was not the best course of action to take, but the author does a good job telling the story and spinning in some wonderful glitches and twists, which kept me on my toes.

All in all, In the Devil’s Nebula is a fun story, with enough serious moments to create an enjoyable romance and balanced tale. I found Ria and Zayn’s story exciting, passionate, and thrilling, and I found myself wrapped up in the adventure. I look forward to see what is in store for the Phoenix brothers.

In enjoyed this science fiction romance with plenty of exciting action. It had a good plot and decent romance. I particularly liked the struggle with the heroine's identity from both main characters perspectives. Pilot Zayn discovers assassin Ria has beat him and his brothers in the hunt for the last three treasures because she wants his help.

IN THE DEVIL’s NEBULA is a Anna Hackett fast action - adventure Space Opera novel with plenty of Steam and a HEA. The 3 PHOENIX BROTHERS are the most notorious treasure hunters in the galaxy. Although the brothers hunt together, IN THE DEVIL’S NEBULA/#2 is mainly Zayn’s story.

Zayn Phoenix/MMC has a love for technology and an understanding of engines which parallels his natural talent for piloting, his passion for flying and his incredible skill in the cockpit. As a thrill seeker with very quick reflexes, Zayn enrolled in the Galactic Strike Wing Fighter pilot program at 15yrs and was noted by his superiors as repeatedly demonstrating bravery in battle during his years of service. But two years ago a mission ended with a disastrous outcome. Zayn’s flight wing squadron was drawn into the Devil’s Nebula, to the planet Lucifa. There, the home-based Assassins guild captured, tortured and killed Zayn’s fellow pilots. Zayn managed to escape but experiences flashbacks and nightmares to this day. Soon after the mission’s disaster, Zayn was released from duty with a medical discharge and joined his brothers’ business. Zayn is lethally trained in hand-to-hand combat and is the youngest of the Phoenix brothers.

Ria Dante/FMC, a Pictori humanoid specie with subtle ridges running vertically from her temples down her neck, was born and trained on planet Lucifa, in the Devil’s Nebula, currently existing in the Exodus Quadrant. Her earliest memories are training with the Assassin’s Guild but in the last few years she’s been experiencing troubled, fragmented nightmares that include flashback memories of Zayn’s face who she believes she’s never met. Ria desperately wants out of the brutal and deadly Assassins guild where she’s never been anything more than a weapon or a tool to be used. She sneaks away from Lucifa and approaches the Phoenix brothers proposing a plan to steal an old Earth relic called the Lincoln Derringer to help her accomplish her goal - escape the guild or die trying.

In the Devil’s Nebula/#2 the Phoenix brothers, Dr Eos (from bk1) and Ria race across space. They run across both villains and roadblocks as they implement Ria’s plan concluding with their arrival on Lucifa - the location two of the three Phoenix brothers have good reason to hate.

Comments ~
I enjoyed reading IN THE DEVIL’S NEBULA, although not as much as bk1. A secondary character, Lala, added a YA tone IMO which I couldn’t embrace. I enjoyed the various worlds encountered and when the action picked up, with unexpected twists and turns. ITDN provided details regarding Zayn’s past and the varied people living on Lucifa. I have purchased the next books in this series and look forward to reading them. ITDN could be read as a standalone title but characters introduced in bk1 of the series play an important role ITDN as well. This is a series that continues to add layers with each additional book.

I recommend IN THE DEVIL’S NEBULA to readers of Space Opera Romances, Fantasy Romance novels, those who enjoy romance action and adventure novels and are okay with a fair amount of Steam. No cheating & a HEA.

Reader Cautions -
Profanity - Yes. Strong language used.
Violence - Yes. PG. Explosions, gun/weapon fighting, hand-to hand battles yet not described in an excessively graphic or dark manner.
Sexual situations - Yes. Beginning at mid-book the 2 main characters develop a growing trust and relationship that falls into repeated physical intimacy. ITSN is a Space Opera adventure story but the romance is definitely present as well. If the above offends readers, I do not recommend. Also, IMO, not appropriate for YA readers.

In the Devil's Nebula was fast-paced fun. Actually, I was a bit surprised at just how fast-paced. I went into it expecting it to be mostly focused on the romance but found myself in the middle of an action adventure instead. The plot manages to combine space opera with heist story with romance and even tosses in a little Western just for fun. It's a lot to jam into such a small space but the style is very cinematic and it hangs together well.

Naturally, the characters come with baggage. Back when Zayn was in the military, he was forced to mercy kill a team mate he was attracted to--a team mate who looks eerily like Ria. Despite this, Zayn isn't much of a brooder and I liked that about him. He prefers to channel his grief into action, as the pilot for his treasure-hunting brothers. He also has a talent for conducting heists... when a certain someone doesn't get there before him.

Ria is a member of the Assassins Guild who wants out. Of course, no one retires from the Assassins Guild, so she's been forced to get a little creative with her retirement plan. But she needs help. I liked Ria's boldness. She gets the attention of Zayn and his brothers by pre-emptively stealing the treasure they're hunting. Yet while she's bold, she's not generally reckless and is more than capable of physically keeping up with Zayn no matter what sort of trouble they find themselves in. The sexual tension between these two sizzles, though some of the early romantic moments could have been held for a beat longer.

However, it was the secondary characters that really stole the show. BEll is the onboard computer for the Phoenix Brothers' ship. I liked that she had such a distinct personality and spoke in a very sassy, casual way. Then there was Lastite Lala, a teenager with a talent for explosives. Despite her young age and total lack of fear, Lala is capable of looking after herself and does a great job of keeping the protagonists on their toes.

In the Devil's Nebula made for some light, action-packed reading. I thoroughly enjoyed it and will be snagging the rest of the series for later.

I really enjoyed IN THE DEVIL'S NEBULA, especially seeing Zayn's more vulnerable side compared to his charming, care-free attitude from the previous book. Plenty of action and adventure keeps the book moving quickly but it doesn't overshadow the romance between Ria and Zayn. I truly felt for Zayn's initial struggle to recognize Ria for herself instead of always seeing Vik, his ex-partner; talk about a tragic story. Zayn carries a lot of guilt over Vik's death and this creates a lot of drama over his growing feelings for Ria. How can Ria trust that Zayn's feelings are real when she has the same face as the women he loved and lost?

I love a strong heroine and I can always count on Anna Hackett to deliver. Ria was strong, determined, and honorable; she knew in her heart she wasn't an assassin and that she needed to live the life she wanted. In particular, I enjoyed the mystery surrounding Ria's likeness to Vik. Normally I can figure out the "secret" in a book, but this one had me second guessing myself up until the end. I had so many different theories running through my head and it added a lot of great tension throughout.

I absolutely love this series and author Anna Hackett's writing style. The details place me smack in the middle of the action, and there's plenty of that by the way! This is sci-fi romance done right and the Phoenix brothers? Love 'em. This is Zayn Phoenix's story and we get to learn about his past (I knew this would be a great story!) Our heroine Ria is a strong woman (an assassin who wants her freedom) and she is a great match for Zayn. While this is Zayn's story, I have to say I am anxiously waiting to read about Nik and Darc. I fully recommend!

Zayn Phoenix is the youngest of the three Phoenix brothers. The oldest one, Niklas, is an archeologist, who usually chooses which items the three of them will attempt to obtain next. Dathan is the second brother, and he's married to astro-archeologist Eos--which has allowed for his rough edges to be somewhat tamed. And resulted in them donating some of their acquisitions to museums. Their treasure-hunting father taught all of them his skills, and they've been putting them to good use ever since. Zayn is the pilot--he used to fly for the Galactic Strike Wing, but there was an incident a few years ago that resulted in the capture and death of his fellow pilots--and he holds himself responsible. So he quit his command.

Ria Dante is a member of the Assassin's Guild, and she wants out--which is not supposed to be possible, but she thinks she's found a way. Lately she's been dreaming about a handsome's man's face, and she's shocked when she meets the three brothers, to realize that it's Zayn's face she's been dreaming about. He's shocked because she's a dead-ringer for one of his dead crew--the one he shot, to put her out of her extreme misery and pain, from the torture she endured at the hands of the Assassin's Guild. He hasn't been able to force himself to pick up a gun ever since.

The story has many twists and turns, involving the theft of an item from the Assassin's Guild that Ria plans to use to negotiate her release from the Guild. She needs the brothers to help her, even though she's been doing a good job of thwarting them by taking their target items before they get there, and leaving a token to let them know she got there first. But that did get their attention.

I really enjoyed this book--to the point where I stayed up WAY too late the second night, because I just had to know what happened. And apparently this is part of a series. Guess I'll have to add the others to my TBR list.

Series: Phoenix Adventures #2
Rating:4 stars - It was really good

Zayn, a former Strike Wing pilot, now spends his days treasure hunting alongside his brothers. When an assassin lures them into a hunt for her freedom, he finds himself confronting his past and his lost love.

This was another action packed adventure for the Phoenix brothers. Zayn was shown as the care-free brother in the previous book but we find that isn’t really the case. He has been running from the demons of his past and meeting Ria means he can’t run anymore. It was an emotional struggle for Zayn to see Ria for herself in the beginning but he quickly finds himself falling for her, not his lost love Vik.

Ria was a wonderful and deadly heroine. I can always count on Anna Hackett’s writing to have kickass females. I liked that while Ria wasn’t an assassin at heart, she still wasn’t afraid to kill for those she loved. Ria and Zayn were a great team and a great couple. I can’t wait to see what they will do in future books.

An entertaining if forgettable addition to the series. Ria is an assassin born into the Guild and trained from an early age. Zane is the youngest of the Phoenix brothers, an ex-strike wing pilot who struggles with guilt and nightmares about his and his partner, Vik's capture two years ago where - unable to free her from rape and torture - she begged him to kill her and he did. He meets Ria, who is the seeming identical twin of Vik. The book has a fantastic premise filled with some heavy material but the short length and light treatment of it leave a lot to be desired. After convincing the brothers to help her get free of the guild by stealing a priceless treasure, they meet with Nera Darc, infiltrate a scary alien ship, and then discover Ria is a regenerated person created with Vik's body and implanted with fake memories. Along the way she struggles with falling in love with Zayn, who seems to confuse her with Vik and his memories. So it had such great ideas but the fast/short plot and scratch-the-surface dealing with deep issues was disappointing. 4 stars

The second official Phoenix brothers book was ok. Ria is an assassin who wants to leave the guild, unfortunately that is not allowed. So in order to leave she decides that she needs to steal the gun used to kill Abraham Lincoln, and she'll need to have help from the Phoenix brothers. Instead of hiring them though, she steals items that they were about to steal for some reason, it didn't really make sense.

Zayn is shocked when he meets Ria because she looks exactly like his former military associate, Vic. He had feelings for Vic but she wouldn't act on them since it was against protocol. He killed her when they were taken prisoner by the assassins...and now Ria looks EXACTLY LIKE VIC(torRIA). It was pretty obvious that Ria was a new identity put into Vic's body.

The story moved along fine, it wasn't my favorite but it wasn't awful. Lala was an annoying new character. Maybe she'll grow on me.

It's been two years since Zane Phoenix shot and killed the woman he could have loved.
Now she's back but it is not her – and a DNA test proves it.
Assassin Guild member Ria Dante wants out but no-one leaves the Guild (unless it is feet first!).
She's come up with a cunning plan - steal the one thing the Guild values above all other and use it to barter for her freedom.
“In the Devil's Nebula” sees Ria and Zane team up with the Phoenix family to remove the Lincoln Derringer – a rare relic from Old Earth.
It's the usual mixture of high adventure and a sexually charged relationship – how can he love Ria if the only woman he can think of is Viktoria?
The explosive character Lastite Lala was interesting but only features peripherally.
It's a fast and mostly frothy read.
3 Stars.

This is a book to read for the sheer fun of it. And if you are a Firefly fan, also for the extra dose of Firefly-like space-western nostalgia. The Serenity cut a much wider swath through SF and SFR imaginations than would be expected for a show that had such a short run, and it’s awesome.

But don’t let my squeeing about Firefly dissuade anyone who hasn’t watched it. This story definitely stands on its own. But if you watched the show, the sense of it in the background warms the heart.

The Phoenix Adventures are space opera of the mercenary treasure hunter type. (If you like Phoenix, try Ruby Lionsdrake’s Mandrake Company for a similar feel)

The Phoenix brothers, Dathan, Zayn and Nik, are professional treasure hunters. It seems to be a family business, and we see a bit more of the rest of their family, and the family’s operation, than we did in the first book in this series, the awesome At Star’s End (reviewed here).

But At Star's End was Dathan’s story, and In the Devil’s Nebula is Zayn’s. In the first book it was obvious that Zayn wasn’t happy about something that happened before he rejoined his brothers. Zayn is their pilot, and he used to be a military pilot. Now something is eating him that caused him to leave the service.

Zayn misses flying fast and far. He misses the adrenaline. But something went very, very wrong on his last mission, and he can’t find a way back from it. Until a new rival turns into a new client, and forces him to return to the scene of his biggest regret.

Ria Dante is a member of the Assassin’s Guild, and she wants out. Membership in the Guild is essentially life-long slavery, and Ria has had enough. She doesn’t even like killing people unless it’s necessary, but the Guild raised her from infancy and she’s supposed to owe them her life. Until she dies on a mission somewhere.

Instead, Ria concocts a plan to steal one of the Guild’s most famous artificacts, the gun that killed Old Earth President Abraham Lincoln. (This gun really exists and is part of the museum collection at Ford’s Theatre). Ria’s plan is to offer the gun back to the Guild in return for her freedom.

Of course, she has to steal it first. And for that, she needs the Phoenix Brothers.

The plan is almost over before it starts. Because Ria is the spitting image of the mistake that Zayn can’t get past. Zayn had feelings for his fellow Strike Wing pilot, Viktoria. But when they were captured by the Assassin’s Guild on their last mission, Vik was raped and tortured. By the time Zayn managed to escape his captors, Vik was too broken to move. She asked for a mercy shot, and Zayn gave it to her. Saving her hours if not days of continued torture before her inevitable death.

He’s never gotten over it, not just what he did, but what might have been. Ria is a stark reminder of the woman he cared for and failed.

Zayn can’t help but want to act on the feelings that he had for Vik with her doppelganger. But Ria wants to be loved, or even just wanted, for herself. No one wants to know they are a stand-in for someone else.

The mission to free Ria takes priority, but Zayn finds himself falling, not for the woman he used to know, but the person that Ria is in the here and now - a woman who may look like Vik, but doesn’t act like her.

And just when they think they may finally have a way to finish the mission, they make a discovery that changes everything they thought - about each other, about themselves, and about the Assassin’s Guild that is hunting them to the far reaches of the galaxy.

Escape Rating A: This has been my week for SFR, and I have to say that they have all been marvelously fun reads.

There is an element of serendipity or coincidence that made one of the central puzzles in this book very similar to one in yesterday’s book, Through the Static by Jeanette Grey. It made it easier than it should have been to guess what the big secret was, but the way that Zayn and Ria find out was still an emotionally gripping scene. (Just because I knew definitely doesn’t mean they did).

One of the terrifically fun characters in this story is Lastite Lala, a 15 year old explosives savant. Also more than slightly bonkers. Lala lives on a planet that has a culture much like that of the American West. It is a desert, people mostly ride horses and have farms or ranches, and whoever settled this place decreed “no advanced tech” and managed to enforce the edit. Very Firefly space-western-esque, and Lala is oodles of crazy fun.

Then there’s the romance. This is one of the few cases where the insta-love thing works. In fact, Zayn has to fall out of love with Vik so he can fall in love with Ria, even while he thinks they might be the same person. So he has to convince Ria that she is the woman he sees and is making love to, and not the ghost of the pilot Vik. He screws up fairly often, Ria has no experience with relationships, and they have a lot to figure out as they go along. Only to have it all blow up in their faces at the end.

In the Devil’s Nebula is a tremendously fun SFR romance/caper with a lot of heart. I had so much fun with this one that I bought the rest of the series!

Another good entry in the series (I'm reading slightly out of order), despite the "twist" regarding Ria that I mostly saw coming. Lots of rollicking adventure in this one, especially with Zayn being a hotshot pilot, and the addition of Lastite Lala.

I think the slow introduction of Niklas and the buildup of his character in the background means that I'm really looking forward to his book the most out of this set of Phoenix brothers!

Very. Very good.

You mind if had an idea what would end up happening. It was a great read to get there. Ria. Assassin. Tough. Strong. Loyal. Zayn is haunted. We finally learn why. He is strong. Brave. He goes after what he wants and confronts his guilt and nightmares head on. Love it.

Zayn and Ria's story is full of danger, adventure and love. They were on a quest to steal the Lincoln Derringer from the Assassins Guild in the Devil's Nebula, a lawless place with criminals of every kind. Another good addition to the series but, I really like Lala Lastite. She is great and I hope that we get to watch her as she grows up.

Assassins

Another great tale with the Phoenix boys.
Ria,is an assassin in the Assassin Guild, and she wants out.
just one problem, no one leaves the guild alive.
So steal something she can bargain with, something the assassins hold in high regard.
With the help of Zayn Phoenix, what she uncovers is mind blowing .
Great action👍
