Boot Camp for Vamps has a new prisoner, and Ria is testing her new world of rules and regulations, fighting her oldest nemesis—conformity. Her key battle is keeping her individuality and hiding her phoenix powers.
With an uptight mentor, an estranged werewolf, and an unlikely band of humans on her side, Ria must first survive her trials, designed to break her by a queen hell bent on making her suffer...let the nightmare begin.
This book was surprisingly good. I hadn't read the first book in the series and I was very nervous I wouldn't like this book because of that. That was not the case. I really didn't feel like I missed too much. I did however wish I had read the first book first. I will definitely be checking it out now.
I couldn't get enough of this book. I really enjoyed the world Costanzo created. It was a fun paranormal read for me. I love the paranormal and I always love the new twist various authors put on the world of paranormal. A great read that I would definitely recommend to all paranormal fans out there. Also, beautiful cover.
Immortality? Escape from poverty? Cool. Forced to enter a group of vampires that are not...errrr...welcoming to their newest member. Not so much.
Our Ria is back with a vengeance. She is up to her usual antics. That's who she is, who she has always been. It's why we love her. But now she is forced to play by a very new, very lethal and rigid set of rules at vampire boot camp. Queen Phea's word is law, and it's a real bitter pill for Ria. She is left helpless to go against Phea, when she wants to with every fiber of her being. Queen b___ seems to hold all the cards, and she literally holds all that Ria holds dear hostage. The community of vampire boot camp was in some ways surreal and some ways seemed like it was very stark straight out of a nightmare. Sometimes when you win, you lose.
There is so much going on in this book! I felt like I just got to eat the first bite of an extremely decadent piece of red velvet cake. Our regular cast of characters is there, and a whole new crew that we are just starting to get to know in this book. I cannot wait to learn more about them. To mention a few:
Mark? Sex on wheels. Eugene? Oh my gosh. I don't even want to go there. I am SO intrigued about where this relationship w/R can go, given his relationship with James. Mindless? Wow. I want to know more and more and more about his statistics, that was an awesome plot line. Very original. James? Everything ALWAYS comes back to James. Boden? Call me crazy, I trust him implicitly. Ari? Love that name. Curious to see how she will fit into this Broken World. I felt like I detected some jealously on Ari's part even aside from the quick Ria/Mark encounter - but I can't put my finger on why, so that is probably just in my head. But there it is.
I think there are so many different ways to go in this series....and I hope all are explored.
"Blood Phoenix: Claimed" by Alisha Costanzo 4 1/2 Fangs
I received this book from the author and from 'Paranormal Romance and Authors That Rock'. This is my honest review.
This book is the second of the "Broken World" series by Ms. Costanzo. The first is "Blood Phoenix: Rebirth." This book is not meant to be read as a stand alone. It is a paranormal novel that delves into the strict world of vampires.
The pacing of the book is fast. The writing was tight and filled with tension. There were no grammar errors or typos that I could see.
Ria has just recently been turned into a vampire. At the opening of the book she is recovering from wounds that would have killed a human. Everyone is amazed that a vampire so young could recover so fast and have some control over her base urges.
Ria is being mentored by Gene, a vampire that is over eighteen hundred years old. Her powers are growing, and the queen and those close to her fear her powers and renegade status.
There are many secondary characters in this book. Their presence and side stories help pull the main story together cohesively. This story examines her need to remain true to herself and to those she loves and respect yet survive and perhaps thrive in the vampire community that is ruled by a queen that has lost all humanity.
It is different kind of vampire series. I enjoyed the nuances of the characters and enjoyed seeing them grow as they face foes and challenges that test their strengths and weaknesses.
Be sure read the first of the series "Phoenix Blood, Rebirth". This is the second in the series, so I recommend reading the first and be prepared to get the third book.
Since I did not read the first book in this series, I am lost on what went on before the beginning of this one. Ria was recently turned into a vampire under the control of Queen Phea. Her mentor, Gene, is helping her gain and control her powers – powers that the queen, the other vamps, and even Gene fear are becoming too strong for such a young and newly turned vampire. Ria is forced to play by the rules when she must attend vampire boot camp and go by all the rules and laws the queen deems fit. The queen holds all of the power by holding hostage everything Ria loves, which is why the head vampire is so afraid of Ria’s powers becoming too strong. It, also, seems as though the witchy queen is very jealous of the newly turned vamp – at least that is my take on the pair. Ria tries so hard to hold on to her humanity in a world where killings and hunger rule. She does manage to keep her wit and sassy personality despite being newly turned.
There are a host of other characters that play a part in Ria’s world throughout the entire story. Some are from her current life and some are from her past. Either way, they all move the story forward and show Ria’s humanity or loss of it in their own way. Things happen that I won’t mention because of it being a spoiler, but it makes her even more powerful.
I really enjoyed this story and the world the author built within it. When you read a book and hate a character as much as I did with the queen, it’s easy to stay focused and involved in the story.
I did not read the first book in this series before being gifted a copy of this book and it greatly impacted my understanding of the storyline. I understood maybe 25% of the who, what, when, where, and whys of this story and definitely recomend reading book one first.
Ria is a newly turned vampire under the control of some sort of queen though I couldn't understand why this queen had so much power and why those how didn't like her didn't just leave. Ria has powers she's trying to learn to control and there's a whole host of people trying to help her.
She's smarmy and a smart ass, but when it comes to friends she's fiercely loyal and would do anything to protect them.
She also seems to have men galore at every turn, but again I could barely understand her connections to any of them.
Overall what I understood of the story intreagued me which is why I didn't give it a lower rating, but because I read this as a stand alone I was left disapointed.
I very much recommend reading the First book in this series First. In my case I did not, I'm on tour with this book and I didn't get the opportunity to read the first book.
With skipping the first book in any series, it will cut the experience and full knowledge of who, what, when and where in some cases.
However, it did not deter me and this was absolutely a wonderful paranormal read! I really enjoyed the world that was laid in my mind and the characters were also amazing. Paranormal is my favorite genre and this book made it to my favorite list. Definitely recommended!
