When a legendary predator decides prize horses should be on his menu, Kate takes the advice of her neighbor ranchers and hires a big game hunter to track the mountain lion and remove the threat. The hunter arrives to take up the trail, but instead of the seasoned older man she expects, he's young and impossibly sexy.
Freshly back from deployment to Afghanistan as a special forces operative, Jakob needs to clear his head of the horrors of war. When his uncle is injured, Jakob steps in to fulfill the older man's commitment to hunt down a mountain lion on the other side of the state. The prospect of several days in the wilderness with only his horses and dogs for company sounds like the ideal opportunity. Except the infuriating female rancher insists on going along for the ride.
We all know real life, real people, and real love aren't always roses and rainbows. I do my best to keep my characters, and their love, as real as possible, even if that includes an occasional stereotype or insta-love. Let's face it. Stereotypes exist for a reason, and love at first sight is a real thing.
So, if you're good with those things, and with: dirty-talking, overprotective alpha males as heroes, and strong, smart heroines; sexual tension and steamy sex scenes; a man willing to do anything, even kill, for the woman he loves (and sometimes the other way around)... Well, then you might love my books. If those things make you squeamish, these are definitely not for you.
In case you've just found me, I'm Aden, a male romance author in a female dominated world. I live in the south eastern US, in the middle of nowhere, with the wife of my dreams, Elyse. We have a few fur babies, and a horse named Joe.
I wanted, so badly, to be able to rate this one 5 stars that I almost considered lying. You see, I love horses, and although I've only ever owned quarter horses, Tennessee walkers are a sight to see. Both were part of the story. I am also fascinated by big cats. There was one in the story. I live in Texas, so cowboys, ranches and that way of life is a common, every day thing around here. I am telling you again, I really, really wanted to rate this a five star.
The plot was original enough. I also liked the characters. But I didn't get to know them very well. I was told their background instead of shown. I wasn't able to get in their heads or their emotions enough to fall in love with them. A couple of plot twists were here and gone in a page or so. I felt like I blinked and missed it. The insta-love didn't work, it was too fast, too soon, too brief. The cookie cutter sex scenes I skimmed over.
Ok...this is what I didn't want to do. I did not want to go on a rant. Let me just say this could be a pretty great novel given time to develop and mature the story and the characters.
Love a good Cowboy romance, but...why I deleted it or why it didn't work for me (contains semi-spoilers):
1. I thought the plot line which could have been interesting but was poorly developed. The "killer" cougar was found immediately and after the dogs barked at it, it choose to relocate. I needed more.
2. The male character had limited thought processes and mostly his descriptions were f***ing perfect, f****ing lost, f****ing glorious, etc.. I don't have a problem with the f word, but this just felt more like a limited vocabulary.
3. A neighbor shows up at the end for an extremely brief scene which seemed to serve no purpose for the plot of this short story, but maybe it is related to the next. I wasn't interested enough to read the follow-up volumes or story segments.
4. This had more a feel of a book divided up into short stories and may have read better combined as a single book. The ending was not a cliffhanger per se, but a HFN. It did however leave you with feeling like you got an incomplete book.
5. The timeline was really short (I think 3 days) and felt more like insta-lust. I didn't feel the connection, but then I like romance versus let's just go straight to sex.
Big Game is the first book I’ve read by Aden Lowe. However, it certainly won’t be the last. This is a wonderfully sexy romance and love story, with a wonderful adventure as the setting. It’s a lovely and quick read, absolutely a ‘cannot put it down’ story. The story begins with Kate Holt, a lovely young lady running her late father’s ranch, having to deal with some dead horses killed by a cougar. She needs someone professional to handle this big cat problem and her foreman suggests a well know hunter Frank Barger. Kate calls Barger and talks with his nephew Jakob Barger, who forgets to mention his uncle has just passed away and he’s seeing to the estate. Jakob, just on leave while he decides if he wants to continue his heroic career in the military or assume his uncle’s place decides he’ll hunt this cougar and use the time in the field and alone to make his decisions. Kate, in a car wreck as a baby, has had many painful surgeries and was told she would never be able to walk and ....however, she decided to let go of the doctors and make her own fate. She’s been left with a marked limp and some limitations and scars. She’s given up finding love and decided to just run the ranch. She’s now decided she’ll accompany this hunter, not let a stranger loose on her property. Okay, that’s the set up and I don’t do spoilers. The whole fun of a wonderful story is to discover and enjoy it for yourself. What I can tell you is the storyline is well written, the plot for this book is simple, but thoroughly enjoyable. The style of writing is excellent. This book completely held my attention and I absolutely devoured it cover to cover. Tomorrow I’ll be reading book two...and since book three is due out in March...Tuesday or Wednesday should find me devouring that as well. I’m always delighted to find a new author that I can count on and Aden Lowe is certainly on that list. This story is exciting, definitely romantic, and sizzling hot love scenes make it one of my favorite reads! Enjoy everyone, I certainly did!
I loved this book. This is a book that is hard to put down once you start. You meet Kate who owns a ranch left by her father and she has taken it over. All her life she has been dealing with a disability but she doesn't let it stop her. When she has lion killing her horses she needs a Hunter to help. she calls for Frank but gets Jakob instead. Jakob is one hot Hunter cowboy. The chemistry between the two is hot and when under the stars.....oh my.
Great job Aden, I'm so happy that you listened to Lucian on writing as it's amazing. I can't wait for book two and hopefully we get more of Kate and Jakob. So worth the read so if you haven't read it then I recommend you do.
Two stars is generous. I nearly didn't write a review for this book. How could I be the only one of how many people who felt this was such a mindless story? I am shocked at the number of people who are writing glowing reviews for it. The only thing it had going for it was the incredibly sexy hero who preceded most of his descriptions with the f word and the independent heroine who was kind of hung up on her disability.
The plot was poorly developed and seemed to be on fast forward. I like a little more romance in my stories and not the instant lust. The sex was the usual cookie cutter stuff with not a lot of emotion.
You never know where you'll find love, and for Jakob Barger and Kate Holt, it could be on the hunt for a mountain lion.
Kate Holt is a survivor. As a young child, she survived the car accident that took her mother's life, and left her with a life long disability. She survived a brief stint in the city where she tried to have a “normal” life, only to return home betrayed and brokenhearted. She survived the death of her father less than a year ago. Now she's trying to survive a lonely existence running her father's horse farm, surrounded by employees who attempt to make things “easier” for her. And, it might be easier...if a mountain lion wasn't loose in the territory. It's already made a meal of one of her horses, but she doesn't plan to lose another. She needs to find a hunter.
Enter Jakob Barger, a war hero home on leave, partly to bury his uncle – who happens to be the hunter Kate Holt is looking for. Deciding the hunt is just what he needs to clear his head and regroup, Jakob shows up at Kate's farm, ready to hunt down the mountain lion...until he finds out he's not going on the hunt alone.
These two strong, confident characters are very likable. They're each able to assert themselves and get their points across without being annoying or irritating. (Although, I do believe it's Kate that came out on top!) Their banter flows , and while they are both hesitant in the beginning, they do begin to address...and deal with...the feelings they have for each other.
This is where my only problem with the story shows up – I didn't feel any chemistry between them. Yes, there most definitely was attraction, but they're both thinking of the possibility of forever in their minds, and I just didn't feel it. Doesn't mean I'm not routing for them though! Maybe, in time, I can get to where they are. But, Jakob's leave time will end soon, Kate has Alexander, the unwanted suitor who only wants her land on her tail, and there's trouble on the horizon! Seems like that mountain lion was a piece of cake compared to what's coming!
This book is a must-read, and should quickly be followed by “Bounty: Hunted Love 2”, where you'll get to know Rita James and Falon Harris, and the dark MC leader, Tom Kellen. (Yes, I read book 2 first...do not judge me! LOL!) “Captured: Hunted Love 3” releases March 27th – and I can hardly wait!
In this book we see Aden's passion for all things horsey and the great outdoors shine as he brings us the story of Kate and Jakob.
After losing several horses to a cougar, Kate enlists the services of big game hunter Frank to bring in the beast. Unbeknownst to her Frank has passed away, and his nephew, whilst home from a tour in Afghanistan, offers his help, hoping to clear his mind and decide his future whilst out on the hunt.
Come one along for a 5***** ride, and an ending which will leave you giddy for more.......
Kate and Jakob are a fabulous start to the series. We really see the author’s passion for everything outdoors and especially horses. Kate is devastated because she keeps losing her horses to a cougar and she enlists the help of a big game hunter in Frank. By a twist of fate Frank has died but his nephew, recently back from Afghanistan, has taken his place. Jakob is floundering now that he is not in the military and will work on Kate‘s dilemma while he is figuring it out. The chemistry between the two is off the charts. I can’t wait for more from this author!!
From the very beginning this book sucks you in and won't let you go! The characters are fabulous, love the plot and pace of the storyline - the love scenes are HOT - it all works for me! Looking forward to #2 Mr. Lowe!!!
I don’t understand any of the positive reviews or some of the negative reviews. Some of the negative reviews said too much sex. Sex does happen until after 60% into the book. Only one is a really good steamy scene. The story feels very incomplete. Everything happens over a couple days, and the story could have been stretched out long based on the plot. The whole hunting for the mountain lion was ridiculous, that’s not how that set works. Also the inner monologues of MCs made me feel like I was missing part of the story, that I went to make sure I didn’t miss an update that needed to be downloaded. The third and what appears to be a final book in this series, may ease some of the incompleteness, but I have no desire to continue this series. Also the third book is a continue of this book, plus the second book in the series and appears to be a crossover with another book (which appears to be part of an MC series?).
This was the first book that I have read by Aden Lowe, and I have to say it won't be the last. I really did enjoy this story. So much so, that I have to go onto book 2 now.
The story between Kate and Jacob is quite fast paced. From the moment they meet until they fall in love is pretty instant. Their lives are messed up and by this chance encounter, they're left wondering what their future holds for them both.
This is the first book I've read by Aden Lowe. It was a quick, very sexy read. The quick, easy progression of the relationship between Jakob and Kate was very entertaining. The only thing I would have liked to see was some of the issues resolved. There were a few things/issues mentioned, but then never brought up again. But aside from different things left hanging, I really did enjoy this book.
Happening in this story just a lot of sex which I have admit I skipped ! Foul language! Not my mind of story. The sad truth is if the author took some though, time and limited the sex scenes this could have developed into a good read. Also what is wrong with people holding out for marriage???
While this didn't end in a cliffhanger, it didn't truly have a resolution either. I really wished I had known that before beginning because I don't really have any intention of continuing the series - this book was free and the others are not on KU.
A quick read and parts not really believable but you can finish reading. Kate and Jakob's story will continue in a future release so wasn't happy where the story ended here. The book description wasn't accurate in the story line, and it wasn't a cliffhanger but it still isn't finished here.
This is a great story about a woman who is now running her horse ranch butt having problems with a lion taking down a few. She decides to hire a hunter but the nephew comes a makes her day.
Jakob needs to decide what he wants to do with his life. Kate is trying to find happiness. When a moutain lion wrecks havic on her horses she call a old number her father used never expecting who arrives. Loved this book and couldn't put it down.
Loved these characters! Jakob is perfectly alpha with a great heart. Kate is strong and intense. They have so much heat. Great read and I definitely need more of them!
I received a copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
This is a cute cowboy romance. Jakob and Kate are a great couple. Felt like the story between them could have been better developed but it was a fun read.
Really enjoyed the way the story flowed. The story shows that even when you think there is no one out there for you, life can surprise you Size and disabilities doesn't matter when love is involved
Quick read that was over way too fast. Story was rushed and not very developed. There's so much more that could've been embellished upon. The ending, while not a cliffhanger, was more of a HFN.
