I loved this book. Christine Allen-Riley has written a magical story that will pull you inside the small town of Iron Falls and make you want more when you reach the last page. Her characters jumped off the page and I was emotionally drawn to Devon. Her pain, her grief and guilt was at times overwhelming that I found myself crying as she struggled to find a way to save her best friend, Rachel, from the Sidhe.

The world Christine Allen-Riley created is vivid and full of magical elements that weave together Native American stories, Celtic and fairy lore. Each creature we meet is unique and I can close my eyes and picture the Sidhe, the animals, the forest and the majestic Lake Superior shoreline as the story unfolded before me.

I can’t wait to find out what happens next for with this series. I did receive this book as an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.

With a strong start, smooth writing I enjoyed this story until it lost momentum roughly half way through and became static with the characters not moving forward.

Spoiler Alert!
The story did pick up again near the end when Devon finally got to the fantasy land, but it took forever for Devon to get there and the time she spent there was too rushed.

What I enjoyed most about Ms. Allen-Riley's work was her characters. To me all her characters were relate-able and enjoyable with the exception of the traditional villain and high school bitch that everyone hates, but even those were well written. My favorites besides the main H/h was the little sister, I really enjoyed the sibling dynamics and antics throughout the story.

Another thing I enjoyed was her ability to be descriptive without the story dragging on or having lulls. There were no lulls at any point that I noticed. I literally read it through in one sitting only taking moments to jot notes down. Now this was partially because I had to find out what was going down in Iron Falls, as I couldn't even begin to guess, and also because I was slightly spooked. Look with all legends there's a grain of truth so I get a pass for being creeped out by the evil fae! I adored that Ms. Allen-Riley took the evil fae route, even though I was sure I wasn't going to be able to sleep and questioned my ability ever to go camping again! I enjoyed every moment of suspense she put me through.

I was utterly enamored with the whole story. After completing it I was very pleased to hear she plans to write at least two more in the series. I think it is a wonderful read for anyone who enjoys suspense, the fae, the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, or series in general ~Eventide is a fantastic start and I look forward to reading about what happens next in Iron Falls!

An enjoyable YA novel. Devon, our teenage heroine, was the driver in a crash that killed her best friend...or did it? Things aren't what they seem in Iron Falls, mystical creatures lurk at the periphery, and it's up to some clever and meddling kids to figure it out. :) As someone who grew up in Michigan, the richly described setting really took me back.

What I liked: The first thing that comes to mind for me with this is the cover. After reading the book and looking at the cover it just really fits the story. To me it gives off a sort of creepy vibe with the way it looks, actually I think creepy isn’t the word I’m looking for. The vibe though, it gives it off and it reflects into the story when you read it in places. I liked the Sidhe part as well, that they weren’t just your everyday faeries. They were Sidhe. From what I’ve read of them, the Sidhe are different from other faeries. Plus bringing in the darker nature that faeries have makes me interested. I love the darker side of The Fair Folk, I find it a lot more interesting than the nice side. Anyway, the plot was interesting, with little predictability to it. Devon was a nice main character, she was determined to make things right, and I felt that the guilt over her best friend was at times shoved aside for other things but at the same time, she did everything to save her best friend. Loyalty and close bonds between friends at its best, of course try explaining that to the kids at school who blame her. Jonah was a good side character, he had his own motivations and story that happened outside what we saw when he was with Devon and we got glimpses of that when he spoke of it. Mellie was a character who’s motivations and actions I questioned whenever she was present, mainly because of who she is. Thorn though, I didn’t like him from the moment he showed up in the book. Struck me as a character that Devon definitely shouldn’t be around no matter what. His motivations weren’t clear at first, but as the story moved on they were more clear than I wanted them too be. The romance was nice and cute as well, there was a build up to it which made it feel a lot more real to me. I loved how the parallels between different cultures as far as myths were concerned were pulled in for us to see, that was different in its own way to see. Let’s also not forget the great family dynamics that were seen, there were no evil family members out to kill the main character (unlike some books in this genre I’ve read recently). The family dynamics being portrayed in a realistic fashion is probably what sold me to this book. I loved the way the family was shown in all its quirks and normality.

What I didn’t like: The descriptions were sometimes lacking on some characters while others had descriptions repeatedly mentioned, and there were some minor errors involved here and there that I noticed. Overall though, there were very few hiccups with the story and it flowed well.

Overall Review: I loved this book, I really did. The characters, while sometimes having trouble and the few inconsistencies, they were moving with the plot in a way that worked. The plot didn’t move them, they moved the plot, twisting it and moving it around as they tried to solve this mystery. The plot itself, it was something that I wanted to read again, and makes me anxious to read the second installment of the series (which sadly doesn’t apparently come out until Winter 2015). I’m certainly going to read this book again in the future to immerse myself more solidly in the book and take it slower. I’ll know everything that happens and the next time I’ll be reading to try and pick up more on the story than this time.

Recommend?: Definitely! If you love fantasy this is an enjoyable read. Or if you’re looking for something with The Fair Folk being evil and creepy. Both reasons work incredibly well.

Eventide was a great scary read, perfect for October. This YA fantasy had me staying up late and reading into the wee hours of the night. I loved this story. I loved the magic, the faeries, the other worldliness, this book had so much mythology weaved into it. A perfect fantasy adventure.

Devon accidentally killed her best friend, Rachel. It wasn’t her fault but she was driving. To make matters worse the family of the girl, and most people in town, hate her for it. There are very few people she can trust. When she starts to see her dead friend running through the woods, she is compelled to find her, to find out why. As this book unfolds it was a white stag in the road that made Devon swerve, causing the fatality. This is not the first time a white stag has been the cause of an accident in her town, she is just the only one who lived to talk about it.

Devon finds some unlikely allies in Rachel’s cousin, Jonah, and a girl at school named Mellie. Mellie has taken a liking to her all of a sudden. She may be the only girl in her whole school who sits with her at lunch and helps her with her homework. This couldn’t have come at a better time for Devon. She is so grief stricken that homework tends to fall to the wayside. I really felt bad for Devon. I can’t even imagine loosing my best friend and then having people blame me for it. Jonah almost hits Devon as she runs across the road trying to find Rachel. Almost killed her, and they form an unlikely alliance. All of a sudden Jonah starts to see Rachel, too.

I loved that there are faeries in this story. The Sidhe (faeries) are really bad, and I loved that they use magic on humans. They have some weaknesses, too as we soon discover. The other person in this story that sees the magic is her little sister Lucy. I would have liked for Lucy to play more of a staring role in this book. She sees Rachel in the woods, and she knows about the tree people. She may not understand it all, since she is so young. When she tells Devon that she sees Rachel too, Devon realizes she is not just loosing her mind, and the story shifts. It was seriously creepy when Lucy describes what she sees for Devon.

Devon starts to see those tree people, too. They sound terrifying, like the stuff of nightmares. Devon goes a bit crazy trying to figure all of this out. The search escalates when Devon loses hours of her life, the victim of a glamour at the hand of Thorn. Thorn states he is Mellie’s brother. This is almost the truth, except that Mellie is not who she seems. Devon doesn’t play the stupid victim, and there were no stupid moves from the characters. For example: Devon is lost in the woods and uses her phone’s GPS to find her way out. The next time she heads into the woods, she brings her dog so she won’t be fooled again. I liked that the character was smart.

There were so many twists, I was sure someone would end up dead by the end of the story. I wasn’t wrong, I just didn’t realize who. I really liked this story and it is complete enough for me to walk away from the series. The author did leave some loose ends and so I am looking forward to the next book Darkling Night. Eventide had a preview of the next book, which is due out winter 2015. It looks good, can’t wait to read it.

This book had me at the mention of faeries. I’m a bit of a sucker for books with faeries in them. I must say off the bat that this one reminded me a bit of Carrie Jones’ Need series. It’s different enough that it didn’t bother me, but there are definite similarities. And definite differences. I don’t think the similarities are enough to detract from the story.

Devon is an interesting person. Right off the bat, you feel kinda bad for her. Poor thing lost her best friend in one bad accident, and swiftly became the social pariah. Everyone in her small school turned on her, blaming her for the accident. And she, of course, blames herself, too. Sometimes, though, it felt like she’s bound and determined to hate herself for this, even when something positive happens. I didn’t particularly like that. She was somewhat inconsistent — mostly accepting her classmates’ abuse while occasionally standing up to them. I loved her witty comebacks whenever she dished them out. I wanted to see her stick up for herself more.

There were some eye-rolling moments in the book. Things where the solution was painfully obvious to me, and I couldn’t see how Devon couldn’t find the answers herself. In many instances, it was like she had to rediscover things that she’d clearly learned at a later date. I get that you can’t always remember everything you learn, but she seemed denser than I’d expect.

The stuff with the Sidhe seemed way too easily resolved, but then going into this you know it’s the start of a series. Even without the Queen’s threats, you know there’s no way it’s over yet. In fact, we’re just getting started! I do want to see how things play out. I do think I’ll read the next book, Darkling Night, which is slated for late next year.

I Received A Complimentary Copy Of This Book From The Author/Publisher In Exchange For My Honest Review!

In a tragic accident that wasn't her fault Devon ended up being responsible for the death of her best friend and the most popular girl at school. Since the accident her life has been pretty much hell. Everyone in school blames her for Rachel's death and so does Rachel's family. Not all of them though. If you think she's had it hard before that isn't nothing to what she's got to deal with now. She's seeing Rachel in the woods, things made out sticks that move and talk, faces in trees, and people dying.

Jonah is Rachel's cousin and such a sweet guy. He doesn't want to believe the crazy story that Devon has told him but when he sees things with his own eyes he can no longer deny the truth. Jonah is one of the few people in town and in Rachel's family that knows that the accident wasn't Devon's fault.

I got pulled into this story at the beginning and as the fantasy world kept growing and expanding to include all these different types of things I found myself falling in love with it. Though I loved Devon and Jonah and their cuteness together as they discovered their feelings and start to build a relationship I found that the plot of the story had my attention more.

So what are you waiting for join Devon and Jonah today in their magical and exciting journey to try and save Rachel and their other friends from the people who have them. I can't wait for the second book to be released. I'm so hoping that Devon and Jonah can continue to grow as a couple but more importantly I hope they will be able to save their friend "Millie."

Thank you again for such a wonderful read and I look forward to returning to your fantasy world and the forest.

Oh my gosh! It has been a long time since I read a book that I have a hard time putting down.

I will admit to putting off reading for two nights though because death, hallucinations and ghost/spirit sightings do not mix well with me - especially when I'm alone with just my daughter in a dark room. Thank goodness my partner was around the next night so I could continue reading.

Eventide is among the best written books I have read so far. I love (and also hate) how it gave me the creeps while reading it - I do not ever want to experience seeing spirits of the dead or otherworldly creatures! I also love the suspense during the plot's climax - it left me almost breathless and I was pretty brave to read it in the middle of the night!

The romance part of the story also has just the right elements so it's not too cheesy although there may have been more kisses shared here and there than I would have expected. Or maybe that's just because I live in conservative, Catholic-dominated Philippines and PDAs, especially in front of parents and the elders are frowned upon. Haha!

I think the book gave me more reason to love young adult fantasy novels. I'm pretty sad that I have to wait around a year for the next book though (I can't believe this one's yet to be released!) - there are still so many questions left unanswered and the story's still hanging.

Kudos to Christine Allen-Riley for such a great book!

Devon Greer’s world is shattered when a tragic car accident takes her best friend, Rachael. Miserable with grief, Devon attempts to adjust to this new, hostile reality, in which the kids at school (and most of Rachael’s family) blame Devon for Rachael’s death, since Devon was driving the car that fateful night. Not long after the accident, Devon has reason to question her own sanity when she sees Rachael running through the woods next to the road near the accident site. Upon investigating, Devon finds there are more creatures living in the woods than just wildlife, and she begins to believe there’s a chance to rescue Rachael from them and bring her back. Will Devon and Jonah – Rachael’s cousin who has discovered the secret in the woods as well, and who is developing tender feelings for Devon – be able to rescue Rachael before it’s too late?

Allen-Riley has taken the wild and beautiful forests and waters of Michigan’s upper peninsula, and planted them in the pages of her book, adding her own magic to the mix, including a society of dangerous fae who will do anything to gain the power they desperately need. The characters are intricately wrought and easy to care about from beginning to end. This suspenseful, imaginative story kept me turning pages waaaayy past my bedtime! It’s wonderful.

A lovely YA book full of secrets and magic, Eventide was an enjoyable read. It had romance, faeries, and a few twists along the way and I really liked it.

Devon was a good heroine. Clever and able to handle herself in the situations she found herself in. She proved herself capable and I ended up liking her.

Jonah was a sweetie. He had moments where I wanted to smack him upside the head for being oblivious but he was determined to help Devon and adorable in general. I thought he was great.

The romance was light but sweet. Devon and Jonah were definitely cute together.

The plot was fast paced and I was kept interested the entire way through. There were a few surprises along the way as more secrets were revealed. I enjoyed the story and the ending has me curious for what happens next.

Eventide was great YA read that I really enjoyed. YA lovers, this is a book worth checking out.

I love this book so much! I was pulled into the story right away and totally connected with the characters. Christine Allen-Riley has written a great YA novel that isn't dumbed down like so many YA books seem to be lately. Her characters are young but smart and you can't help but root for them. I love that the stepmother isn't a typical mean stepmom, that Sam and Lucy are freaking adorable and act like actual little kids, and I love that Devon's dad typically just doesn't know what to say but he keeps trying. :) Oh and I adore the fact that Devon isn't a Too Stupid To Live character... She's been through hell but keeps on kicking.

I can't wait for the next book!

Devon Greer experiences a huge loss when she looses her best friend in a tragic car accident. Not only does she have to put up with normal teen angst and hateful schoolmates but she has to try to figure out if she's loosing her mind when she starts to see her dead friend in the woods.
Christine quickly pulled me into Devon's camp and had me rooting for her all the way. I'm anxious to see what she throws at Devon in the next book.
This was a really good read and I plan to share it with my 14 year old.

A fun YA read! It was very well written, and, honestly, scared me a couple of times with the suspense and creepy descriptions. Has some of the standard YA stuff--a heroine who blames herself for things beyond her control and a cute boy who adores her--but that didn't detract from the story for me.
