I love Jouelzy, and I know she has an important narrative to tell, but at times, I felt confused like I couldn't keep up with the main character's feelings or my own. I wasn't able to fully digest the weight of the scenarios because the chapters seemed rushed and incomplete. And the typos...were a distraction. But overall, it's worth a read. Just be prepared to feel like you were left hanging.
This book very much reads like the stories you tell your close best girlfriends on a Friday night out or a sleep over. This vibe alone makes this book an engaging read. However, it was all over the place and poorly edited. I need an updated version as I enjoy the author’s critical takes on pop culture and Black feminism.
I enjoyed this collection, only one of the essays had me high-fiving the air "Peach Cobbler". Anyway, all of the short stories felt real and emotionally draining. If I was reading this in my 20s, it would definitely be 5 stars.
Reading the book was overall interesting experience for me. I enjoy Joulzey on YouTube and thought her collection of short stories would be fiction based and therefore letting me in to a different side of her creativity. Although it's not clear how much is autobiographical and how much is possibly fiction - like most books you will read if you try hard enough you can find what relates to you or did relate to you in a past situation. I'm very different from the protagonist soli B but was able to sympathise with her, judge her and accept her. My favourite part was Zumunda. I felt like it was beautifully written and got me invested in whatever the story was behind there. What I didn't like so much was the fact that the book is hella confusing. It's like reading a paranoid persons personal diary that they filled with code cos they were sure someday someone will read it
I heard about this book from YouTube because jouelzy has a natural hair channel. It's supposed to be a book of short stories. When I think of short stories I don't think of them as being connected to the previous story. Some of the stories felt more like chapters or reading someone's blog, diary, or thoughts. Other stories were not connected at all and made no sense to me as a person who doesn't know her or the people she is talking about I felt I had to attempt to fill in the blanks of what was going on and who these people were. There was no back story for any of the characters it was just overall confusing to me throughout most of the book.
I'm gonna give her kudos! She's young and full of spunk and grit. I will not put her an amazing writer; just yet. Her writing doesn't match up to her attitude. The book was ok but not great!
