North Carolina State's 1983 NCAA championship still ranks as one of the true Cinderella stories in the history of college basketball. Coached by legendary Jim Valvano, the Wolfpack had been a long shot to even make the tournament. As a low seed, they went on a wild six-game win streak that culminated with a last second upset over Houston's team in the national championship game. At the time, Valvano's team was the lowest-seeded team to ever win a national title. This book, told through the eyes and memories of several players and coaches from that team, takes readers back through the magical month of March 1983.
A very inspirational book on the 1982-83 N.C. State men's basketball team, coached by Jim Valvano. Seriously, how has this story NOT been made into a major movie yet??? Tells the story of each player on the Wolfpack, including players not often seeing playing time that year along with the stars such as Sidney Lowe, Derek Whittenburg and Thurl Bailey. I didn't really like how the author started previewing chapters with other chapters near the end of the book and that ended any chance of a five-star book. Interweave those stories together. I'm reading about the Final 8 game after already being told what happened in the Final 8 game. Same thing with the ACC tournament. Why tell the same story twice? But other than that, a great book and college basketball fans must read.
As a life long NCSU fan and NCSU alumni, I was extremely interested in this book. My love for NCSU came from my dad, a fellow NCSU alumni. Growing up, I had heard my father's stories of what he was doing during the 1983 championship game - his excitement, his surprise, his joy. Through this story, I was able to somewhat understand the excitement during that magical run though the NCAA tournament. I enjoyed the player profiles and recaps of each game. Overall, a great read for any college basketball fan.
