"When Life Feels Empty" is a great read on using ancient Christian practices for greater fulfillment instead of depending on the world or our flesh. Around 180 pages, the book centers around 7 practices in a typical church (song, baptism, communion, thanksgiving, Bible, church, the Lord's Prayer) and suggestions for using these practices.

Among the many points made include:

1. Examples of the futility of trying to find fulfillment apart from Jesus Christ.
2. Specific examples of we can use things (phone, social media, drugs, etc.) to try to fill the emptiness in our lives.
3. Types of different false religions we depend on (politics, sports, busyness, causes/movements, etc.).
4. Church songs that speak of God instead of focusing on human nature.
5. Importance of baptism (while baptism does not save us, the sacrament is an outward expression of the salvation and grace through Jesus Christ and not of works).
6. Communion is an excellent way to express our allegiance to Jesus Christ.
7. God wants us to express thanksgiving (not that He needs it, but it's good for us) when practicing ingratitude is much easier and goes against our natural tendency to focus on self.
8. The Bible is not just a book of words but is ultimately authored by God Himself.
9. While God is all we need, it is good to practice and enjoy fellowship with other believers - don't live life in isolation.

The book is easy to read and comprehend, includes a helpful notes section, and points the reader to Jesus Christ instead of ourselves or the world for fulfillment like so many books try to do. My only real criticism would be to include both a scripture and subject index for quick reference.

Still, a good read and recommended.

I was given a review copy by IVP in exchange for a fair review and appreciate the opportunity.
