Darkest Hour Saga

'Twas the Darkest Night (Darkest Hour Saga #1)

Rate this book
Owner and operator of Bits and Pieces, and resident expert on charms and glamours, Elsa Karr is a witch with a sour frown and a list of things to do as long as Thor's hammer. Top of the list is saving her father's shop from ruin. If she isn't trying to claw her way out of debt, she's arguing with her cat, Fenris, or shoveling carts of cake into her gob. She's not interested in romance or the vampire who rents the flat above her shop. All she wants is a little peace and chocolate--fine, all right! All right! The vampire is kind of screw-all cute. (Curse him.)

The disgraced son and heir of the Wingates House vampire clan and a mad-man to boot, Marshall Ansley spends most of his time working and dodging his mother's phone calls. Marshall is beyond family. He's beyond everyone, actually. Don't be daft, he especially doesn't do...Christmas. But behold, the plague brings an original flavor of annoyance this year when his boss tasks him with acquiring the account of a recluse fey and her upcoming Gothic clothing boutique, Sinister Stitches. That is the ONLY reason he's bothering with his shrewish landlord. No, that's it. No...really. Fine, if you insist, the witch might be a tad bit...all right, she's adorable. (Damn her.)

Scrooge meets Scrooge. Dominant meets Dominant. Tempers...spark. In each other, they may unfold a tale that only comes to pass on the darkest of nights.

Sophie Avett is kind of a nerd. Like not even one of the cute, hip ones everyone brags about nowadays. More like the socially awkward hippie who eats way too much bread and dreams about being a dragon from behind towers of mythology books. Um...yeah. Picture old, tattered paperbacks and comic books--mostly Batman and Wonder Woman--dwarfing a tiny desk, with just barely enough room for the troll who writes there and the 70 pound hell-hound that insists of laying it's wet nose on top of her bare foot.

Granted not the most exciting existence, but she tries to make up for it by writing romances populated with her own peculiar ilk of paranormal beasties. Trolls, wyverns, the obscure Nordic brownie--she likes to keep things interesting. And bloody. (And mostly naked--but, we'll keep that bit between us.)

Sophie Avett loves to hear from her readers. (Hi, mom.)

DISCLAIMER: I write fantasy. I buy reference books. Therefore, I review reference books. I will NEVER review a fiction book as Sophie Avett. Such things are frowned upon. Also, I try to be as helpful and as accurate as possible with reference book reviews because they really are an expensive investment. So, NO--I don't know those people. Nor did they ask me to review for them. I'm just tryna help another reader/author out with info. :)

Twas the Darkest Night by Sophie Avett is 2014 Skeleton Key publication. I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Elsa is a witch and an authority on Charms and glamours. She is the owner of a shop called Bits and Pieces, which happens to be having a little trouble staying afloat. It is very important to Elsa that she keep the shop up and running which leads her to make some tough choices in order to get herself out of debt.

Marshall is a disgraced vampire commissioned to snag the lucrative account of an upcoming Gothic clothing store called Sinister Stiches. This is the reason he needs to make an special effort with his landlord... Elsa.

Marshall and Elsa would usually be described as two peas in a pod, which is a good thing most of the time, but not with these two. Elsa feels the need to keep her shop because it was once her father's and she just can't let it slip away or abandon it. So, pretty soon the two of them are locked in an epic battle of wills.
Marshall will find his true calling as he falls under Elsa's spell. At once her lover, her submissive, and her protector, he will make choices he never dreamed he would. Elsa was his, and he was hers. But, before either of them can admit this to themselves or one another, there will many obstacles to overcome.
This book is one of the most unique fantasy/ paranormal erotic romances I have read in a long time. The author has an unbelievable imagination. The details are vivid and colorful, the story is funny, sexy, dangerous, and edgy... but also, sweet. Elsa refers to Marshall as "Vampire" and he refers to her as "Witch". The banter between the two is razor sharp . It's obvious these two are meant for each other, and with Marshall's help Elsa might be able to save her business after all. Both of these characters have a good side and a dark side and I liked both of them.
When I signed on to review this one I didn't realize it was this type of erotica and usually I will pass on anything I feel is out of my comfort zone. However, I had committed to review the book so I stuck it out . I think this author has a great deal of talent and could write anything she wanted to. This one is just a little long and perhaps it could use a trim here and there, but overall I think the characters were very well developed and the writing was lush. I would like to see this author tackle a high fantasy type novel or something perhaps more on the Urban Fantasy side of paranormal without the harder core erotica. But, again, I must remind those reading this reveiw that I am a bit older than the targeted demographic... so I don't consider myself prudish. LOL! I would also like to compliment the beautiful cover art as well.
If you like erotica, fantasy, paranormal romance, vampires, witches and manner of otherworldly creatures I highly recommend this one for you.
Overall this one gets an A.

Favorite Lines “What would it be like to have complete control over such a luscious creature? What would it be like to tame all that dark energy boiling beneath her tepid surface?”

“Right now, nothing mattered but the little witch hanging from the darkness. And he hated her for it.”

“And she forgot he was anything but the man who’d turned a cupcake into a delicious crime.”

“So die very slowly for me, Marshall.”

“Sing for me, Elsa. Not him. Sing for me.”

“That moment—Marshall snapped the image. He saved it amongst the few a man carried with him even in death. Just in case he was never fated to see the sun again.”

“Care to be my angel, Ms. Karr?”

What a fabulously naughty book! I can honestly say I've never read a book with so much eclectic detail. The way this author describes things has me blushing, wondering, cheering about every word!
Marshall is a angry monster and Elsa is a spinster monster. They are both running from there past, the lives, there hearts. When Marshall needs Elsa's help to land an account for the advertising company he works for. She's sure she's making a huge mistake! They both need each other so desperately! Watching them both heal each other was beautiful! It also gave me a whole new outlook on submissive! (Yummy)
I'm dying to know how Elsa handles Marshall's family and clan! This was a fun and sexy world that made me laugh! I will be following this author closely!

Elsa is a witch and not a happy one. Primary among the things making her unhappy is trying to keep the charm shop she inherited from her father running – a seemingly impossible task. Socialising is something she’s largely written off, preferring cake.

But Marshall, her vampire tenant, may actually have the key to solving her money troubles – but it means going away with him to secure an important contract for his firm. Of course, alone together on a romantic Christmas scrooge (and them both dedicated scrooges), other priorities arise.

This book begins in a very intriguing fashion. We’re presented in a full world with a vast amount of supernatural creatures, a city that is ruled and dominated by the supernatural, lots of monsters and magic and even a focus on some creatures we very rarely see in the genre – Trolls and Huldra. The world is described in a very intriguing fashion. My hopes were raised, this world really interested me and I wanted to see more.

We have a snarky cat, which is always fun, and a protagonist who is both fuller figured and quite happy to enjoy food, especially cake. I always like a protagonist who appreciates good cake.

Elsa herself had a somewhat mundane but neat little task – she has inherited her father’s shop and wants to make it a success; there’s also a very artfully suggested underlying issue she also has to deal with but is more teased than revealed as we burrow into the plot. I also really love Elsa the Troll and her little problem with greed.

I even like how Marshall offers to help – recognising her independence he offers a trade of services: her magical help in exchange for his advertising expertise. He offers a service that will help her shop rather than playing the White Knight and simply buying off her creditors. I was intrigued – this was looking good.

The problem is that this very promising setting is used to be a background for sex. Lots and lots and lots of kinky sex. Sex and S&M scenes consume most of the book and there are major problems with this.

By far far FAR and away the most severe of them is the problem of consent. The sexual relationship between Elsa and Marshall begins with rape. There’s no ambiguity about this (the book has a “dubcon” and “forced seduction” written in the front – this isn’t dubious – it’s rape. Elsa is restrained, helpless, does not consent and is raped. There is no question of that. The rape is certainly not treated as rape, Elsa does not regard him as a rapist and there is generally a denial of the whole rape element here. If anything, she is annoyed that he has seized control and she is determined to enforce her own authority over the relationship she is now determined to continue and even pursue. She pursues a relationship with her rapist, the rape seems only to annoy her because of the power dynamics of the relationship rather than the actual violation itself.

From there we just have lots of really broken consent – basically she then decides her appropriate action will be to use magic and woo-woo to control and sexually assault (and, again, rape) him. This back and forth rape seems to be the establishment of their relationship and the assumption that everything from then on is actually consensual. To which I just repeatedly gaped at the book and occasionally just chanted “no no no no no” over and over again.

Even if we removed the rapes (because there’s no real need to point out what is problematic about a relationship beginning with rape – it’s self-evidence or should be), from then on we still do not have a very healthy depiction of an S&M relationship, especially with 2 strangers. There’s no discussion of limits, consent, safety words, preferred activities or really any attempt from either partner to establish what the other wants and whether they agree to what is happening. There’s no consent, there’s no communication and it’s generally far from an ideal BDSM relationship

Once we have that problem it seems pretty ridiculous to complain about anything else because, really, rape renders everything else somewhat moot. But I did find there was a problem with how the sex consumed the story and the world building, even if there wasn’t any rape. Sex and sexual tension seems to take the place of expositioning this world, of the whole mission they’ve set out to do – even the conflict between Marshall and his ex feels undeveloped and tacked on so we can have some more angst from Elsa and an evil Ex trope. There’s so much focus on the sex that nothing else really thrives

As far as sex goes in terms of a purely mechanical description and word use and flow it’s actually really well written sex. Once the characters actually move towards consent (though I can’t say they’re ever excellent at establishing consent) it’s really well written in terms of how-to-make-a-sex-scene-sexy. So there’s that.

It’s not that nothing else exists but sex – no we have Elsa‘s body image issues which are huge and linked very much to who and what she is and we have Marshall and his tragic childhood. Both of which I’d be more interested in if it didn’t feel like more pulling from the main plot.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review through the Goodread's group, Lovers of Paranormal. When I first started reading, I thought I'd made a mistake by agreeing to read and review it. I was a little overwhelmed and didn't think I was going to like it. That changed very quickly. Before I knew it, I was in deep. I didn't want to put it down and found myself stealing time to read it here and there.

The writing is like poetry or the lyrics to a song. The author doesn't just tell the reader what's going on or what the scenery looks like. She paints you a picture with her words. It's definitely not a book you can just walk through, you have to pay attention but, if you do, you'll realize what a beautifully-written story it is. Surprisingly, the story has a lot of Dom/Sub elements in it, that I didn't expect. These were also written in such a way as to bring a sort of beauty to the scenes. There are occasional 'raunchy' words thrown into the dialogue but it's done in a way that adds to the personality of the character speaking, and doesn't really take away from the prose-like feel of the narrative.

The characters are multi-faceted and, though they are paranormal creatures, they have a realness to them that only enhances the story. Humans and monsters have learned to live together, for the most part, and the supernatural beings live and work just as humans do, only after dusk. You get the fantasy of a paranormal realm with a bit of reality thrown in. Not too much, just enough to give it a sense of believability, with a twist. The main heroine, Elsa, is a strong being who gives the impression that nothing can phase her but we get glimpses of her soft underbelly the minute she reveals her attraction to the main hero. She brought tears to my eyes on a few different occasions with her vulnerability. The main hero, Marshall, on the other hand, actually believes he's a strong, cold-as-ice, hard-ass with no weaknesses. As the story unfolds, we find that he's as layered as any other being, once you chip away at his shields.

Speaking of characters, there are so many awesomely, interesting characters in this story that anyone with a fascination for myths, legends, fairytales, and the like, will be spellbound. You'll find a variety of beings here, from ghosts and pixies, to vampires and brownies, each with distinct personalities and quirks. It was amazing to me that I could keep them all straight but they're so well-written and individually interesting, that I had no trouble at all.

I'm not going into detail as to spoil the ending but I just want to say that I loved that Marshall wasn't appalled by Elsa's 'true form'. That part, to me, was so very beautiful and, I admit, I got a little teary-eyed. Elsa deserved to be loved completely, and so did Marshall, for that matter. Lovers of happily-ever-afters won't be disappointed, and that's all I'm going to say. Happy reading!!

Independent Reviewer for Archaeolibrarian-I Dig Good Books.

I'm writing one review for the entire series, 4 books, since they follow on immediately after the other and I am reading them back to back.

Elsa finds herself making a deal with a vampire to save her father's shop. Elsa is a witch, a half breed at that, with incredible powers that leave Marshall, quite literally, tied in knots. Marshall is a cambion, a half breed, vampire/incubus. He knows where he strengths lie, and Elsa seems...immune.

Welcome to New Gotham. Its a city, just out side of New York, that gives the creatures of the night, the night. A curfew rings for humans to retreat. Those stupid enough to find themselves on the street after dark are fair game.

I read a warning for these books, I suggesst you heed it. It dark, its deadly and its utterly, and totally, delicious! This is NOT your average paranormal romance, no ma'am, its not.

Elsa knows she is keeping secrets, and Marshall is still suffering from a dreadful childhood. Both know their faults and embrace them. They both have motives and will do whats necessary to get what they each want. I loved the other creatures that are here, pixies, brownies, and Fenris, the familiar. The wit that cat has is ace!

Some scenes are very borderline, almost, ALMOST non-consenual. Some readers may not like this, some will revel in it. I found them just, so very JUST on this side of okay (for me and my liking) The scenes between Marshall and Elsa are not so hot and heavy but more down and dirty, and the way they both use their own powers, and for Elsa, when she uses Marshall's power, to get what they want out of each other. Marshall almost turnabout from Dominant to submissive is a slow burn, its starts right after their first time together, and it total in its devastation. BUT equally, its so beautiful, when he finally comes back to Elsa.

As I said, no fluffy romance, there is no I love you. There IS a happily ever after, as far as these two can ever be really happy.

The only reason its getting 4.5 stars and not 5 is: the writing is a little choppy. Its the STYLE, I think, of Sophie Avett, rather than a negative comment. It just took me a little getting used to. Had I read these as instalments when they came out, and not back to back, the rating might well have been lower, simply for getting used to the writing each time. I should like to read more in this series, there are some listed on Goodreads, but not Amazon. I would wait til there are all parts available, though, again, because of the style of writing.

The first part of this set is currently free on Amazon. If you enjoy it, buy the novel bundle, rather thn the instalment seperately, it works out much cheaper. Yes, you'll have the same book twice, but you will save a few pennies. :-)

so, 4.5 stars.

I was given this book in exchange for an honest review, Lovers of Paranormal.

Erm....where to begin? WOW?
Forget everything you think you already know about paranormal before you start on this book. Sophie Avett takes us to a unique world where nothing is as you know it. I had to keep telling myself to 'just go with the flow'. The whole atmospheric world was a mix of Victorian England, modern day London/New York/Boston......anywhere you felt applied at that time. It kept you off balance and totally captivated throughout.

Everything and everybody was a mix. There were witches that were part wolf/vampire/troll, you name it they were there. There were brownies, pixies, vampires, werewolves and even mermaids!

There were great moments of humour and some funny smart-arse one-liners that made me chuckle. I loved the throw back to names from A Christmas Carol - all very cleverly done, even the address of Bits and Pieces - on the corner of Cratchit and Marley lol

If I'm brutally honest the book was too long. I have given it 5 stars but I was honestly torn between 4 and 5 stars and only because of the length. Saying that, it was good enough to keep me with it although I did wonder from time to time just why it was so lengthy. It would have been worth 5 stars+ if it were trimmed down a tad. Sharper editing would have made it a much more exciting read. I couldn't honestly say which parts I would say to leave out though!

The scenery, the characters, the descriptions are all amazingly well-written. There are so many characters that pop up throughout the book, that in other books have made it totally confusing, but are handled so well and appear instantly so interesting that they are accepted into the whole with ease. I'm not going to start listing all the characters or the plot of the book, to me that is what the blurb is for, that is why we read it. I will say that for major characters such as the Sinister Stitches crowd to appear after the mid point of a book was unusual but just made it all the more exciting - and as I said, it is a very long book so there was plenty of time for them to develop!

I have read this from an electronic copy - I wish I had the hardback/paperback to sit on my shelves - the cover is stunning and although I, literally, don't choose a book by the cover this is worth looking at and does draw attention.

50 shades meets The Christmas Carol.

First and foremost let me begin by stating that I received a free copy of the book from the author in exchange for my honest review (LOP R2R). Thank you

Twas the Darkest Night is not for those faint of heart. It is Dark, Sexy and very uncomfortable. We face so many feelings and all at once it becomes overwhelming at times. Sometimes I felt like Sophie gathered all of our Christmas stories, and twisted with her own version of 50 shades. If you love Grey I can’t guarantee you will love Marshall but he is also one of those evilly beautiful beaten creatures that you can’t help but feel over protected over. Then theirs Elsa, the eccentric, reclusive, and introvert shopkeeper who is madly infatuated with Marshall; but she is not the weakling or timid character we tend to encountered in sub/dom stories. She is strong willed and will even surprise her self at how much can she take.

If you love 50 shades and the Christmas carol you will love this book.

*****Warning: Spoiler Alert*****

Let’s start with Elsa’s and Marshals first sex scene. I was so confused. I wanted to hate Marshall for raping Elsa, for taking advantage of this lonely creature. But I couldn’t I couldn’t help but feel like they belong together. I know very disturbing.

Then there was the scene during new years, the way Marshall submitted to Elsa was beautiful but at the same time oh so so very disturbing.

Let’s move to something less disturbing….

I was very disappointed that Sophie didn’t answer some of my questions. Such as why did Sally went to see Elsa at her Office even after she had cure her brother. And how did she cured little Tim? When did Marshall realize that Elsa wasn’t after his money? What happen to Marshall after his submission? How will their life be once he goes and works with his father? How did his father react to his submission to a Troll?

I do love a character with a sense of humour and Twas the Darkest Night certainly delivers that. Described as a dark, paranormal Charles Dickinson style Xmas story, it was pretty much that. I really wished I’d read it round Christmas as it was brimming with food for festive thought. It is part of a longer series, and I must admit that I really wished I’d read the other books first. There is a glossary of ‘world’ terms, however it kind of made the flow judder a little, as I had to keep going to back to find out a term to appreciate the joke.

From a writer’s perspective, the main character was what made this book for me. To have a supernatural stuck in the same messes that us ‘normal’ people end up in was quite refreshing. The Cat, Fenris was also a lovely addition and really reminded me of Alice’s Chesire Cat (who is one of my favourite literary characters of all time) It was also lovely to read about a protagonist that doesn’t suddenly get it all (I think this is because I’ve read a lot of YA recently) but has to work to get what she wants. The adult scenes were written very well and just in their appearances too – which in this type of fiction is a must.

The front cover is pretty and shows the characters well. A very, very competitive genre, Paranormal Romance is one where the cover really has to stand out, My only criticism here is that Xmas should have played more of a role on the front.

Overall, I’d give Twas the Darkest Night 4 out 5 stars, don’t wait till Christmas, pick it up now!

Sophie Avett's 'Twas the Darkest Night gives a new spin on the paranormal romance world. From her witches, vampires, fey, and fairies, she takes you into a world of nothing but magic. Sophie's characters strengths and weakness work well throughout the story. Her twist and turns leaves you swings towards turning to the next page.

This book could use a little trimming here and there, but worth reading.

As someone that is not really into witches and fairies, I found myself wanting to know what happens next, that's bonus with me. I highly recommend the witch, fairy, fey, vampire, troll, pixies forks out there to get this book. 'Twas the Darkest Night will definitely be right up your alley.

I was honored by Sophie when she asked me to read and write a review of her book. As I read her book, I was tickled pink to see her honor our favorite Author. For Sophie and I share the blast of loving the same Author. My heart swelled when I read Sophie giving great praise to this Author.

Good Job Sophie!

***I received this book in exchange for an honest review from the Goodreads group,Lovers of Paranormal, LoP.***

I really enjoyed this book despite initially not caring for two main characters. There were so many secrets and walls up with both of them, and I was not impressed with how they presented themselves. This was an important part of the story, however, and it was so fun to see them transform (literally) as they slowly let down their guards and opened up to one another. There are so many crazy/fun/crazy characters in this story described in such wonderful detail. I appreciated the glossary at the end as I was not familiar with the Norse terms. And I NEED one of those Sinister Stitches dresses. Like now.

***I received this book from the author, Sophie Avett, in exchange for an honest review.***

My first exposure to Sophie Avett's world of New Gotham was via her Cry Wolf books, which focused on an unlikely pair and their interactions with each other.
I've had the unfortunate experience where some authors are unable to give each character different personalities, making characters and environments all seem one dimensional and, in my opinion, redundant.

However, the more I read about New Gotham and its inhabitants, the more I'm sucked into Avett's world, and my imagination is taken beyond the limits. I couldn't stop reading this book! I found both Elsa and Marshall to be relate-able in their own ways, and I especially was able to relate to Elsa, a short, chubby witch with a penchant for eating sweet things, and staying far away from anyone who could possibly hurt her. I especially appreciated that Elsa isn't a wispy damsel-in-distress type, and is a powerhouse. Marshall is no weakling either, and I love their chemistry, I love that they know that there is chemistry, and I love that neither will act upon it because of their own deep seated reasons, which is a refreshing change in my opinion.

You should definitely give this book/series a read if you are in love with Terry Pratchett's work, except there is far more sex and graphic details and (if you have delicate sensitivities against this sort of thing) blatant swearing, two things which I personally don't mind and love, as they leave nothing to a reader's imagination, and makes each character's personality stronger.

I look forward to delving into the next instalment of the saga!

AMMENDMENT: REST OF REVIEW CONTAINS IMPRESSIONS OF BOOKS 2-4

After reading the rest of TDH books, I found it harder and harder to continue reading. By book four, I was agonizing over the different issues I found with the story thus far. I found there to be more detail in the sex having, rather than in any description of the surroundings. I often forgot they were even on a boat, because there was hardly any movement, save to buck just in time to throw someone against someone else in a timely fashion to intensify mood.

The repetition of particular tropes/metaphors (aka, angsty male plays violin, has violent tendencies, spends 4 books wanting to know what love is, and wanting female to show him) slowly frustrated me, and I felt that by the fourth book, which was intended to be, I assume, a wrap up of events, it was stretched longer than necessary with Marshall and his own internal struggle, which I had had enough of hearing about by book 3. That's just me.

Furthermore, I found that many of the characters shared the same 'voice'. The Sinister Stiches trio, brother and mother all acted similarly. There seemed to be no difference between the three of them save what interested them, and who they were mated with. Even the mother seemed less of an aged, mature individual, but as crazy as her children, making the brain behind the entire organization seem less interesting. Even the quest in having to find her was more mundane than I expected. It was said that the fey didn't show herself in public, that no one knew who she was, yet here she is, without glamour, in the middle of a Christmas Show... Elsa wasn't even needed. Sally shows up at the last minute, but unnecessarily. Even Marshall's enlistment of Gwyneth's help was unnecessary, since, again, the fey revealed herself unnecessarily.

Overall, the 4 books felt like one long book that, do not get me wrong, has promise, but needs reworking to include more description to give us ambience and setting. As it stands, the book seems to be focused on whatever sexual exploits between Marshall and Elsa (which, I agree with another reviewer, starts with rape), and seems more like a tribute to Fifty Shades of Grey and Twilight (both of which are referred to due to the author's likeable penchant for using pop culture references in her work), or rather, a lengthy fanfiction that combined the two.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

'Twas The Darkest Night (A New Gotham Fairy Tale)

I received a free copy, through LoP, in exchange for a review.

As a witch and owner of a slightly failing shop, Bits and Pieces, Elsa never ventures to far from home. The mystery surrounding what she is and her negative attitude makes it easier for her just to stay away from others, as much as possible. Unfortunately, she does have an over the top beautiful, successful vampire tenant living upstairs from her shop. But, neither of them are what they seem and one day, Marshall propositions Elsa, for a job. She helps him figure out who this reclusive fey owner of clothing label Sinister Stitches is, so he can try to win her over to his marketing firm and in return, he would help her with her own store and bring it into the black. But, neither of them knew what would happen when they mascaraed around as a couple and what that will lead to.

'Elsa's reflection in the car window caught his attention. Seated with her back straight and her attention to the scenery, she looked beautiful in the understated, classy dress. His eyes clung to her mouth, to the frown ever set there. What would she look like if she smiled? He'd seen a shadow of amusement, but the small flickers of humor died as fast as they surfaced. Washed away like waves against the sand. Leaving no trace on her stern countenance.'

Wow, talk about a lot of Dom sex scenes! The story overall was interesting, but I felt like every time the actual story line started, oh hold on, here comes the next saga of their sexual tension and onward. I'm not a prude or anything, but I find that it can be a bit much and so I will have to admit that I skimmed over these parts, in order to get to the plot. I know that this is part of the plot, but I'm just not that into it. I did like Elsa's character and her background story, along with Marshall and the ending was great. A little on the long side, but overall, if you are into Dom/Sub and paranormal characters, I think this would be great for you!

Elsa is a witch (or is she?) and owner of a shop, that is sinking fast called Bits and Pieces, She never ventures to far from home. That is the first mystery of this wonderful The Christmas Carol meets a Sex Club. Be forewarned it’s hot as hell, not for the meek reader. If you like paranormal romance and erotica this will get you going Enter Elsa’s hotter then sin, upstairs tenant Marshall a vampire with a bit of demon and succubus thrown in the mix. When Marshall needs a witch to help him find a fey who owns clothing label called, Sinister Stitches, clothing that comes in one size and adjusts to the wearer! (What a concept). He turns to the little witch, with a proposition that she can’t pass up. Neither of knew what would happen when they pretend to be couple on a paranormal holiday cruise or what was going to happen to them along the way..

There is a very strong Dominate tone to the book. It’s refreshing that a good bit of it is Female Domme. What sparks fly when two dominate paranormal creatures are attracted to one another? The sparks fly of course.

Even with all the Dom scenes (yes a lot of hot sex), the story ebbs and flows wonderfully and will keep a reader awake to finish just one more chapter! Then fall asleep by the glow of your Kindle and dream a very kinky fairy tale.

There will be times you want to slap a few characters. Will true love blossom and last? What kind of creature is Elsa? What demons can haunt a vampire? Read this page turner to find out.

Favorite Line from the book

“Actually, he'd just been smacked by a pixie, and he was on his way to be spanked by a woman - he wasn't certain of anything anymore.”

Ms. Avett managed to get almost every single paranormal character into this book, in a refreshingly different way. An extremely hot ride through monster paradise.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review (LoP or Lovers of Paranormal). If there was one word that I would have to use for this gorgeous book it would have to be lush. At the beginning of the book Sophie Avett warns the reader that this is not necessarily for the faint of heart. And she is right - it is extremely dark, has a wonderful gothic feel to and is quite graphic in describing some of the darker subject material. But it is an unforgettable experience. Avett is one of those few writers who you know loves words and is passionate about them. I am not saying that there are a bunch of fifteen dollar words (i know its not usually fifteen but that seems a better fit given the size of the book hehe) throughout on the contrary there is a simple elegance to the words used that contrasts beautifully with much of the action taking place. Rather I mean the way she writes, the sentences she puts together, the imagery she creates is so wonderful, so enthralling, so….lush. It sucks you in and you cannot stop reading. It also helps that she has such wonderful and complex characters. Characters that make you cringe and make you laugh, characters that manage to both melt your heart and make you cower - they are all such forces of nature and you want to spend more time with them (even if you don’t always want to admit it ;)) I love the way the Avett manages to mix so many types of faerie and supernatural ultimately creating her own completely unique mythology that is New Gotham. I was so excited to hear more about Marshall and Elsa and to see many of the side characters that create this universe that I went and looked up all of her other books as soon I finished this. I cannot wait to read more!

I received this book in exchange for an honest review (LoP or Lovers of Paranormal).

Ok, so safe to say I had a definite love/ hate relationship with this book- in that I really did overall love it but I hated that it took me so long to read.

The main characters, Elsa and Marshall were very likeable, Elsa more than Marshall. I think Elsa is very easy to relate to, being a strong independent female with serious body issues and a love for cake. Whereas Marshall is a broody vampire with father issues which most girls, me included find very hot. Together they seem like they would be an unstoppable force of nature which I absolutely love and let’s just say their sex life made me blush.

Secondary characters were also great and I do think the very loveable Sally needs her own book because she’s awesome! Ingrid and Ferris too.

The story line is great and I loved how the author didn't just tell you what was happening she painted a picture making every single aspect in such detail that it is vivid in your mind and unforgettable.

The pacing of the book was good however sometimes I felt that there was a lot of description and nothing else happening. However this was just a small issue because I was pretty much addicted to the story.

This book has been a very enjoyable read however is a one which you need to set a longer reading period- you don’t want to miss any of it- also I look forward to the sequel very much.

A great book to switch it up in the paranormal erotic department! First of all, I love the genre! I love how it was more female-dominant. That's something that I don't see very often, and it was new and refreshing to me. It's also kind of dark and has a lot of bdsm, which I don't mind, but it also pushes the boundaries of what you may be comfortable with. When I got to some parts of the book (mainly the scene towards the end *cough* where Marshall does something to proves his love for Elsa *cough cough*, it did surprise me a little but i don't mind and it even made the book more interesting for me.

So I read this during the time that I was busy with school and work, as a result it took me a long time to finish (approximately 2 1/2 weeks). There were times that I didn't get back to reading it because I wasn't as interested. But i'm glad I finished it because it was worth it! I kind of have a problem with stopping in a book/anime/tv series when it gets boring to me, but that part where I stopped was actually leading up to a big climatic scene lol

Anyway.. Overall it was an awesome book and I'll be keeping an eye on Sophie Avett's next work. Hopefully this review wasn't written too poorly; its my first review I have ever written for goodreads >.< haha

Twas the Darkest Night is a New Age Christmas story filled with spells and cake. Ms. Sophie Avett describes respectively each sentence in vivid details. Your senses will wonderfully explode with all expanse of emotions and images. The dark romance between Elsa Karr, a shop owner and Marshall Ansley, advertising agent, range from harsh and bleak to sweet and loving. I could not help love all the secondary characters. I can't wait for this story to continue.

My favorite quotes in the book are as follows:
"Actually, he'd just been smacked by a pixie, and he was on his way to be spanked by a woman - he wasn't certain of anything anymore."

"Because the past nourished our bones so that we may weather even greater titans."

"My dear boy, love is friendship," Mrs. Potts opened her arms wide, "set on fire."

and MY FAV-FAV

"Granny huffed. "Woman don't need saving, lad". "Indeed," Mrs. Potts followed with a curt nod, "I've always said if you can take a dick, you can take a dragon."

I loved this novel. I was captivated by this book from the first page. The story is an awesome journey through a winter wonderland of fantasy. As the story began to unfold I was surprised at the depth in which the author had taken me. Well written is an understatement. The mass array of characters was an added bonus. I love a story that blends so many personalities that compliment each other in a way that brings the story together. The humor throughout had me laughing out loud and catching looks from anyone around me. The BDSM aspect was played out well in regards to the characters. The characters themselves were well thought out. So many had great roles throughout. I look forward to reading more about each and every one of them. A must add to your tbr list. Definitely recommended!

When I first started this book, I have no idea where it will bring me and I was very surprise, it was like riding a roller coaster. This is a very interesting yet different world. It contain more than just weres, vamps, witches etc, it also introduced mermaids troll and many more.

This book have plenty of moments of humor with those snarky/ smart-ass replies from either parties. It was very entertaining.

This book is quite long but because of the length, the two mains had plenty of time to develop their attraction into something more. The scenery, the characters, the descriptions are amazingly well-written although certain parts I was a little confused.

Elsa is a good heroine, they're both likable. Definitely a YES for readers who love paranormal with sparkling romance.

I give this 5 stars.

Marshall and Elsa are aboard the Palantine Light in search of Marshall's next client, Madame Mari. Marshall is drawn to Elsa. She isn't glamorous but she is something. He can't put his finger on what it is about her, but when the sparks fly between them, he is for once at peace. Elsa sees how beautiful Marshall is and is drawn to him. She tries to show no feelings toward him. Their back and forth with one another brings a smile to your face. Their chemistry when they finally submit to each other in their own way, is consuming.
These 2 characters show each other small parts of themselves, but both get overwhelmed with how the other perceives them. Marshall has demons from his past that has him on edge, with no peacefulness and Elsa has a bigger secret. Marshall thinks she is a witch.

10 stars of unique awesomeness!!

Read this years ago but sadly can't find it on amazon anymore, luckily i have my original epub version transferred to my kindle, and the paperback signed version by the author. Not my preferred reading style cos I'd love to read this awesome book again.

What a shame the author hasn't written anymore, she is so incredibly talented.

This book is everything! Unique plot and storyline, characters, world building it is stunning and I've yet to find anything similar!

Incredible characters and some of the hottest sex scenes I've ever read.

What a fucking crime not to continue writing!!!!

Talent like this amidst the legion of mediocre is just criminal when the mediocre thrive and the sublime dont.

The most under rated book ever.

The most diverse and interestingly unique characters I've ever read.

Fuck I'm pissed!!

I received this book in exchange for an honest review (Lovers of Paranormal, LoP).

An interesting story about Elsa, a surly witch who is trying to keep her late father's store open and Marshall, a cambion who rents the apartment above the shop. Marshall presents Elsa with a deal: help him land an advertising account and he in turn will keep her store from going under. Ms. Avett did a fantastic job on the world building, and there is just about every paranormal and supernatural being featured in this story, but the story moves along so fluidly you really don't even realize just how much information is coming your way.

There are some parts of the story that could be trimmed down, but overall it's a fantastic read and I can't wait to read the next book in the series.

***I received this book in exchange for an honest review from the Author and the “Lovers of Paranormal” Group on Goodreads.com***

What a crazy book! I took me quite a while to really get into it and build up a sympathy for Marshall and Elsa. But I liked it and I enjoyed reading it. Although I have to admit, I'm not into that Dominance-Submissive-thing. I skipped a little when I came to these parts. But nonetheless a good book!
Maybe a little too much fantasy for me and I lost the connection when it came to all these different creatures. I should have known there actually is a glossary in the back. It would have made my life a bit easier.
I think the plot is a clever idea and brings this old Christmas story back to live.

First of all, take heed to the warnings, don’t read if any of them may offend you. I was highly entertained throughout this entire read. It is an emotional roller coaster, fun and exciting, sad and dark and very sexy. I love the interaction between all of the characters and their quirkiness. Elsa and Marshall are an interesting puzzle to be solved and I love learning more and more about them. This was my first read by Sophie Avett and I enjoyed it, looking forward to the next book. I received this in exchange for an honest review.

Deliciously naughty, Twas the Darkest Night captured my attention from the very beginning which started with a warning about how dark the story would be.Sophie Avert and Elsa did not fail to delight; each delivering the promised darkness. Sophie's imagination and sense of humor created a world I felt I would find in the shadowed alley around the next corner. Looking forward to the next 'episode' of New Gotham! Thank you Sophie.

Just when I think there can't be a different approach on paranormal, I read this book and am blown out of the water. The writing was beautiful, the atmosphere was magical. At first it was a little hard to keep up, but soon I was swept away with the story. And I really liked Elsa. Definitely recommend to paranormal readers. Look forward to seeing more from this author!
