Shea Harper is forced to stay in boring, hot and dry Phoenix, Arizona for college. But once she meets the enigmatic yet positively egocentric Lucian, Shea’s life changes forever.
She finds out that she comes from a long line of descendants called Vessels. In her soul is the key to destroying an ancient prison protecting the world from darkness itself: Lucian’s father.
Up until now, Lucian has captured every descendant except Shea. With her powers awakening, all vampires want to drag her down to the pit. But Lucian is territorial. She’s the first female Vessel… and he’s convinced she belongs to him.
Saucy and tauntingly surprising, Black Moon captures the struggle between burning desire or denying the heart. This is a love story that will drain you dry.
"Light and Darkness are not so different from one another".
This is a YA, paranormal romance story. It follows Shea who finds out she comes from a long line of descendants called Vessels. In her soul is the key to destroying an ancient prison protecting the world from darkness itself: Lucian’s father. Lucian is an ancient vampire, determined to capture the vessel. When the two meet, everything changes.
The story is told from the perspective of Shea and the perspective of Lucian. Both characters have a unique voice and I found both of them interesting.
I'm a huge fan of dark fantasy, the battle between light and dark in this book was so exciting! I love how the vampires aren't sparkly being (sorry not sorry), but true bad asses!
I love how action filled the book is! A lot happens, with twists and turns along the way.
Something I didn't really like was the pacing. Sometimes weeks would go by in a few sentences, while other events took pages to describe. It felt a bit unnatural at some points.
I'm looking forward to read the next book in this trilogy!
Shea Harper finds out that she is a descendant from a line of Vessels. Her friend, Adian has always been her protector, but she is unaware of her powers until they bot go to college. It is there she meets, Lucian, who is working to take Shea's soul to his father. But, once Lucian sees her he has a bit of change of heart, Adian and Shea have always been like brother/sister. Shea finally discovers all the facts about Adian and Lucian.
Favorite Lines “Perfection is a diseased idea that’s infected mankind.”
“My brothers protect the true light. We disturbed the balance of good and evil, and you are nature’s way of preserving it. No action comes without a cost.”
“Darkness was not meant to be bound.”
“They’d decided and sealed their fate. But they were wrong. Inside my dead, cold, hollowed out carcass, I knew that it was stronger to fight for that tender spot. Fight to keep it alive. To keep the weakness in you breathing. But it was more than that… my heart… my soul needed her.”
“He could feel it too. Something bigger than ourselves. The Vessel and the one sworn to take it. We were meant to be. Our fate the same.”
“Though we may fall, we will never fail because we have given ourselves over to glory. To fight for those we love.”
Viscous and Beautiful! Those are the 2 words I would use to describe this book. It's a Beautiful love story between light and dark. Lucian is the dark a vampire who has one goal to being the vessel to his psychotic father of the dark. Shea is the light, the vessel everything good, bright, and warm in the world. They couldn't be more opposite for each other. Viscous because the darkness in this book is bloody and gory, and evil. It's a great start to this series! I'm going to be keeping a close eye on this author. I loved it!
I was given this book in exchange for an honest review
Interesting vampire paranormal story with a unique twist.
This is told via dual POV from Shea (the Vessel) and Lucian (the vampire); the other key player in the story is Aidan, Shea's best friend, but he also shares a history with Lucian.
Lucian might be a 3,000 year old vampire, but he still remembers the feelings he had for his first love and how her death shattered him. When he meets Shea, his original intention was to use her to free his father, but somewhere along the way his feelings toward her changed, which I thought was interesting, that as the world's second oldest vampire, he still managed to retain a scrap of humanity and was actually able to experience the feelings he has for Shea.
Shea on the other annoyed me to no end, I'm sorry to say. I will say that she was loyal to Aidan and defended him against Lucian, until that pivotal moment that occurred in Missouri, and even after escaping, she was still devastated by the turn of events with Aidan.
It was good to see Aidan and Lucian team up for Shea's survival, although the fight scene that occurred just prior to them teaming up was good and intense until the whale scene happened (that's as much as I'll say, you'll have to read it to find out what I'm talking about); it got a bit ridiculous with the whale.
The ending was good, even with the cliffhanger, and I can't wait to read the next book in the series.
Shea Harper has spent her life growing up with her family and best friend; Aiden. Aiden is like a brother to Shea but all is not as it seems!! Shea and Aiden are about to start College, they move into their student accommodations. And then Lucian appears. After Shea has met Lucian everything changes.
Shea develops feelings for Lucian, but she decides not to tell Aiden. Aiden has a history with Lucian; a history that dates back thousands of years. Now that Shea knows that things aren't as she has always thought, she must decide who's telling her the truth and who to trust.
Will Shea's best friend still be her trustworthy rock? Should she trust the newcomer Lucian?
I really have enjoyed reading Black Moon; I loved the characters, the story, the way in which the book is written, for me it all works really well. The characters were very realistic; as realistic as a 3000 year old vampire can be; and believable too.
Shea starts out as your normal everyday 17 year old. She lives in Phoenix, Arizona; and it's hot and dry, Shea doesn't particularly like it. Shea and Aiden have grown up together, she trusts Aiden with her life. Shea isn't a 'quiet girl', she's got a smart mouth and isn't afraid to use it. Not forgetting that she has learned that she is one of a line of Vessels, which gives her the power to break pure darkness out of its prison.
Aiden has been born every 500 years, his purpose to protect the Vessel. To stop the vampires from taking the Vessel into the depths of the Earth and freeing the Darkness that is Caelius. Aiden and Lucian's history goes back from thousands of years and its not necessarily always pleasant.
Lucian is a 3000 year old vampire, he was created by Caelius! Lucian is broken, he lost the love of his life when he attempted to turn her. He was a young vampire and didn't know that females can't be turned. After losing her Lucian has felt like there is nothing left except to free his father. So the hunt is on again!
The story is told from multiple POV's and it works! It's clear who's POV your reading and never confusing. It's also different to see two author's who have written different characters, they compliment each other so well.
I loved the action packed scenes, especially when Aiden's brothers appear inside Caelius' prison! I'm not saying any more on that because I'd hate to spoil it for you. There is a clear romance beginning between Shea and Lucian, Shea doesn't tell Aiden but that's because she knows of their history.
I was hooked from the start, I just couldn't help but keep reading page after page. As I was reading I was constantly trying to guess just how this would end. I must admit that I definitely did not see that coming!! I need to know what happens to Shea, Aiden, Lucian, Caelius and...
If you enjoy paranormal and vampires I'd really recommend giving Black Moon a read. I will warn you there is a bit of blood and gore too, not loads just a smattering!!
This review was originally posted at Corazones Literarios... This book was provided by the authors through BBT in exchange for a honest review!
Shea just arrived to collage. She is sick of Arizona, but for some reason, she just can’t go out from them, so she goes to a local school. But her simple life turns up side down, when she is attacked by a stranger with vampire complex on a party, and she finds herself trough a world where vampire comes from Egypt itself, kill without compassion and an ancient beast with the mission to keep save her kind.
So, I like the plot. All the trick and twist the authors present fix very well into the story. The world they build together is very good with all the myth and thing from the past; I also like how they fix history with their book time line. We can see where is writing each author, their voice is very different at each chapter and, when Shea voice is lightly and very much modern, Lucian is dark, dangerous and very much ancients.
The story drag me, it was difficult to put it down. Every situation was so involving and the action was very much captivating since the beginning.
I like Shea; I think she was my favorite character from the book. She stands her points and was funny and lightly. I was so on her side through the entire story. I also like Aidan; he was enchanting, no matter what he had done in the past or what he did to her, I like him the most, and if I have to choose a Team, it would be his. About Lucian, well, although he was fine, he did gain me. I couldn’t find something likable, I felt like I was so drowning into his over powering personality and could breath.
I think that the only that dislike me from this book is Lucian. I mean, he could had thinking a little bit less about him; it was all about him, he liked her, his “sons”, his “father”, his old friend, his feels, he ravage, his rages, him, him, him. At some point, I was so over of it. Like, I don’t want to know anymore about it.
I felt that the romance was a little bit too much to Twilight. You know, the bad vampire and the beast, but also the fact that, for me, is rush. Like, they don’t spend too much time together but instantly, she knows she love him; not quite enough for me. Although, I like that despite has some similarities, it could also be different and got it own magic.
Overall, I think this an amazing read, full of actions and captivating story.
[Full disclosure: I received a free print copy in conjunction with the blog tour in exchange for an honest review.]
I really do love the characters in this novel. Both Smith and Sherrill did excellent jobs with their respective characters, Shea and Lucian. I felt like I really was in Shea’s and Lucian’s shoes during their chapters and I understood their motivations for their actions. I’ll admit it: sometimes I’m a sucker for tales of forbidden love. And boy, does Lucian ever fit the bill here. Our dark vampire here used to be a slave in Egypt who loved the beautiful Nefertiti but was killed for it. After all these centuries, he still loves her despite the tragedy that befell her because of him. His guilt and his love are clear in many aspects of his life…until he meets Shea.
As an Egypt buff, I loved the infusion of some history into Black Moon, but it was rather disappointing that Smith and Sherrill played fast and loose with the facts. No, Nefertiti was hardly captured in battle along with her father. No, her father’s name was not Ur-Nammu. And no, she was certainly not a slave at court with the name of ‘wife'; by all accounts she was greatly beloved of Akhenaten. Now, I can definitely forgive some historical inaccuracies in the name of a good story. But when Lucian passively mentions that Queen Hatshepsut constantly reeked of myrrh, I had to laugh. Hatshepsut was far before Nefertiti’s time and therefore Lucian’s time (since he was human then). There were three kings with extremely long reigns between the two women, so there’s no way Lucian actually would have met her.
My griping about historical accuracy aside, I really enjoyed Black Moon. It has quite a fast plot and so many twists and turns that my head was spinning by the end. Yes, in the beginning it seems to be mostly character-driven but by the end it seemed to be more plot-driven. In reality, it’s actually the best of both worlds: it’s a fast-paced novel with extremely well developed and believable characters. I thought it got a little melodramatic toward the end, but that’s a personal thing rather than an actual flaw with the novel. The cliffhanger at the end was excruciating; I would have read the next book without it anyway, but with a cliffhanger like that I know I definitely have to read the next book now.
"Black Moon" is the run-of-the-mill YA fantasy about a heroine who holds the key in saving the world while guarded by "light" and "dark" beings. Unbeknownst to her, Shea is the "Vessel" reborn chased by supernatural creatures who are ordered to bring her alive to Calius, the "Father" of all vampires. Predictably, she discovers her powers and somehow immediately accepts her fate as the conqueror of evil.
There are definitely aspects of the story where B. Smith needs to explain in greater detail. For example, why can Lucian walk out into the streets and only be weakened under an overcast day with sunlight still peaking through the clouds? While a few chapters later, Lucian's arm almost gets burnt to a crisp with just a quick exposure to the sun? Is direct sunlight and/or UV radiation that causes such severe injuries? Is being in indirect sunlight or under the shade okay? It is details such as these that make the story more vivid, interesting and enjoyable.
Also, transitions between scenes are not always fluid and leave the reader guessing as to how an event occurred or resulted. For example, one minute Shea and Aidan are at the campus and the next they are in some other state without any explanation as to how they got there, the significance of traveling to that specific location, and when they got there. Another example, is when Shea meets Lucian and instantaneously hates him with a passion. Unsurprisingly, within the next chapter or so they come to some unexplained emotional understanding and instantaneously becomes physically attracted to one another. The lack of character description and development contribute to the choppiness of the narration.
Overall, "Black Moon" is a quick read but lacks in plot and character development. The insinuation of homo-eroticism is mentioned but never dealt with or explained. The conclusion is anticlimatic promising an inevitable sequel. Getting through this novel will definitely leave you with more questions than answers.
Lucian is a 3,000 year old vampire. He has lost his love, his life and his freedom. What else could he have to live for but to free his Father from his underground prison and destroy the friend responsible for his loathing?
Aiden is a guardian born every 500 years to protect the Vessel at whatever cost and to ensure Caelius will never be set free from his prison.
Shae is, unfortunately, the Vessel. She's a college student in a hot, dry desert town that she hates. She's almost made into vampire food at a party on her first day and then finds out she's a powerful being capable of freeing an ancient evil. No pressure there.
Lucian and Aiden have history and it's a history where they hate one another. Age old battles over the Vessel have made them bitter rivals.
Minus: There are typos in the story that a beta reader should have picked out. There is a lot of setup and telling of backstory that gets tedious in places. Lucian needs to stop correcting his thought processes and just have them. "Butthurt" and hyphenated words are overused. The big action happens and then the book ends. But what happens next?! And the last chapter really should have been an epilogue that becomes a prologue for the next book, in my humble opinion.
Plus: The action is well done. The fight scene isn't rushed. Aiden and Lucian have a believable love/hate thing going on. You genuinely don't want to believe Lucian when he speaks, but his words have the faint hum of truth. This story kept me turning pages. The action never lags enough that I want to put the book down. Very entertaining.
Well now, that was an interesting read. Where do I start with this review?
The book itself is not a very long read, roughly about 14 chapters not counting the prologue or epilogue. But in reading those chapters you do get a detailed account of the story being told.
The most important thing to be said about this story is the uniqueness of the tale and how thoroughly intriguing it is. It’s a different type of vampire story fused with history and an interesting take on biblical mythology (I say mythology because not everyone believes in the biblical stories so please no attacks.)
There is the typical romance in this story but luckily it is not one of those back and forth love triangle tales that frustrate the readers but the characters are well-rounded and full of backstories and history; not to mention the chemistry between them. While there is some predictability, it’s nothing to get in a snit about as it doesn’t deter the story in anyway or take away from the execution.
The authors, in my opinion did a stand up job creating this universe and the characters inhabiting it and I look forward to seeing where they take these characters and reading how the story unfolds. It’s a different kind of book so I can’t really pinpoint a title to compare it to but vampire readers this one is definitely for you. Also if you like a little history mixed in with your paranormal romance and a dash of magic then yep, it’s a book for you. :D
“I received a free copy of the book from the author/publisher for my honest opinion. I was in no way compensated for this review and all opinions are expressly my own”
I tried to like this book. I enjoy a good paranormal book every now and again, but by page 30, I was dreading having to read the rest of this. Pros: -The use of 2 authors to write the 2 different characters was very creative and really sells you on the fact that these are people coming from different places in life.
-The romance was also a nice addition.
Cons: -The main character was kind of whiny. Of course, she is a 17 year old girl, so maybe that is what they were going for.
-There are some very graphic and, in my opinion, disgusting scenes that are definitely not for teens (which is what this book seems to be aiming for). For example, "She flinched for a moment, but I took the time to fill her body with a deep, aching sort of orgasmic pleasure. Her limbs trembled as she peed herself. Something turned my stomach. Was it boredom? The taste of silicone from a leaking bag in her breast?"
-It's kind of insulting to women. The Lucian character goes on and on about how vapid women are. "In this generation, they were nothing more than household pets. If men were modern slaves, women were the slaves of slaves."
-There were a few typos. For example, "Suddenly white blinding light filled every POUR." "ME AND YOU will have our day."
-There are father and son vampires. They describe them in a familial loving way and then in the next sentence they are behaving sexually toward each other. If find that creepy and off-putting.
*I have received a free copy of the book for a fair and honest review.*
Series: Black Moon Saga #1 Category /Genre: Dark Paranormal romance Recommended for: 18+ due to sexual inferences Grammar/editing: B – a few small errors Received from: F.M. Sherrill & Becca C. Smith (in exchange for an honest review) Tour by: Read Between the Lines
This is the first book in the Black Moon Saga series. They will need to be read in order.
Shea and her best friend, Aidan, have always been together. Now, they are starting college together. When she is attacked on campus, she activates the powers she never knew she had. She is the Vessel, an agent of the Light (God?). She has now attracted the attention of Lucian, the Dark Prince. As the Vessel, she is the key to unlock the prison holding Lucian’s father. Aidan must choose between love and the safety of the world. Lucian must choose between love and obedience to his dark father. Shea must choose between Aidan and Lucian, and choosing wrong could cost her either her life or the lives of everyone on Earth.
This story kept me on my toes and the edge of my seat. It is fast-paced, romantic, dark, and occasionally funny. The humorous parts were perfectly placed to keep the dark from becoming too depressing. I did not guess the twists before they happened, which was a nice change of experience.
This book could be read as a stand-alone (no cliff-hanger), but I look forward to reading the next book in this series.
Disclosure: I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion on a promotional book tour. Review is as follows:
This was a pleasant way to spend a few hours in the evening. It takes the vampire tale and gives it a nice, hard twist, melding it with other mythologies and ancient stories. I do admit that Shea bothered me some and came across as a tad whiny, but she is only seventeen so that should be expected. Lucian and Aiden are interesting and in the midst of this complex, ages-old, love/hate relationship that is at once understandable and frustrating.
Good action and a plot that kept moving, I read this quickly and my mind kept trying to jump to the conclusion. There were moments where you really empathize with what it must be like to be Lucian or Aiden, a moment where Shea's pain is palpable, and the story just keeps pulling you along. I hope there is more in this universe, especially with how it left off!
So I read this because I won it in a good reads giveaway. It does have an interesting premise, light and dark but with a twist. It deals with Angels and Vampires. A being locked away, children he 'created'.
So good book overall, there are some glitchy areas, maybe going over it again to catch some phrasing and spelling mistakes. The dual perspectives are kind of cool, but I think in some spots it a tad rough.
Would I recommend this? Yes. Even with the issues, it was a good book and I am looking forward to the rest of this series. I currently don't have my book on me or I'd go ahead and put some quotes. There are some very definitely good quotes!!!
There are some laughs to be had, not many, but some. It's definitely an intense book in parts, toss in a sprinkle of laughter, the evolution of the 'bad guy', and the revelation of a new love. Something I like, total uniqueness!
Honestly this is the first vampire book I read and it was pretty good. Well, I read "Twilight." but this book has way more substance! I don't think "Twilight" really counts. I really liked the novel and could really identify with the characters at times. Shea is the first female Vessel and must be protected. Will her best friend Aiden protect her, her love interest Lucian, both, or neither? I was satisfied with the ending for the most part as it paves the way for a sequel. There was quite the interesting twist at the end and I'm wondering about the sequel. There were a few grammatical errors and some typos and a few word choices that I question. There is romance but I really like the fact that it's not too explicit. Big points for that! A+!
Black Moon I thoroughly enjoyed this tale about darkness and the Light. I didn't put it down until I finished the last paragraph. I carried my laptop to the kitchen, bathroom, even to the grocery store until I finished. The way it is written is similar to Beach House by James Patterson: with each character telling the story in their own perspective. Very entertaining and captivating! Looking forward to more from these two authors!
