Two Lost Whales + One Concerned Newscaster = An Authentic, Breathtaking and Cool New Kids Book
In May 2007 the world watched with awe and concern for the plight of two lost and hurt humpback whales who were trapped for more than two weeks in the Sacramento River.
In Delta & Mother & Baby Whales Journey, you ll join Mama Delta & Baby Dawn as they accidentally swim under the Golden Gate Bridge into San Francisco Bay after being hurt and scared by a big boat, and then wander up the Sacramento River to the Delta town of Rio Vista and the city of Sacramento. The impressive mammals eventually find their back home again to the Pacific Ocean, with lots of help from friendly spectators, scientists and Coast Guard rescuers. They encounter trials, tribulations and fun along the way and Dawn always stays close to her Mama.
Newscaster Stefanie Cruz spent hours covering the story of the lost whales on Good Day Sacramento. From that experience, she documented the whales journey, infusing it with her own perspective as the mother of a toddler. Touched by the bond between the whales, she thought of her young son and how she would never leave his side during times of trouble. That bond was the inspiration for the book. Even when all hope seemed lost, Delta and Dawn always were side by side.
Illustrator Lily Toppenberg, muralist for the Sacramento Zoo, has created an authentic and richly textured view of the humpbacks, their underwater habitats and the sunny landscapes of Northern California. Her stringent attention to detailing the wayward cetaceans and their environment, and cheerful take on their unusual journey make the illustrations in Delta & Mother & Baby Whales Journey a delight.
An awesome book - absolutely perfect for kids who love animals! Bright, colorful illustrations that keep their interest, informative text that teaches them about whales and their habitat, and it's all based on a very touching *true* story of a mother and her calf and their journey home to the Pacific Ocean. A definite must-have in every child's book collection.
