Immediate Obedience

Rate this book
Listen and These words transformed Rod Loy's relationship with God. He wondered what would happen if he became more sensitive to the voice of God and immediately obeyed whatever God told him to do. Through his story, Rod describes the thrill and the challenge of walking hand in hand with the King of the universe. God gives us specific assignments in the ordinary course of every day-even, and especially, in the mundane and the frustrating events. When we grasp that truth, every moment will become infused with the possibility that God may do something unexpected and spectacular at any moment. Jesus delighted in doing the Father's will and showering His love on people. In the same way, when your heart is aligned with His, you'll delight in doing His will-fully and immediately-and seeing Him use you to touch the lives of those around you. Get ready to hear God clearly and to obey immediately.

√ Stop Dragging Your Feet and Obey God!

IMMEDIATE OBEDIENCE is a message of exhortation to Christians--when you sense God telling you to do something, DO IT! Rod notes that the great events in the Bible stem from obedience: "There are no amazing stories in the Bible that don't include immediate obedience."

The author lays a solid groundwork for recognizing the wisdom of God, and deferring to Him: "Many people see Him as more of a Santa Claus than a sovereign King... People think they know better than God." And, "The key to a thrilling life of being sensitive to the voice of God and immediately obeying Him is the firm belief that God's plan for our lives is fundamentally better than anything we can dream up."

This book originates in some self-observations by the author on his life. Although he believed he was a faithful follower, he realized that he 'was responding, but sometimes slowly or even reluctantly." So, Rod embarked on a one-year plan of obeying God without question--as soon as he recognized the leading of God. His plan was to respond instantly when he heard a nudging from God.

The results were so encouraging, that Rod explained his idea to his congregation. He wanted others to try a similar plan--a plan he calls the 90-Day "Challenge." The key is be open to the idea that God may have some wonderful plan--something you've never thought of, something far beyond your dreams: "Just maybe--God is working in, around and through you to accomplish something far begging than you ever imagined... and he wants you to join Him." This book is filled with numerous stories of people who tried this plan, and their encouraging, inspiring results.

The theme of IMMEDIATE OBEDIENCE reminds me of the writing of the famous Gaither Band gospel singer, Mark Lowry, who, in his autobiography, suggests planning your whole life around exercising the gifts that God has given you. Similarly, Rod wants believers to fashion their lives around obedience, and see what exciting things God will do in your lives.

The author cautions the reader against being to quick to simply accept a suggestion from someone who says that "God told them" to do something. Rod provides 7 separate checks to use to confirm such suggestions, for example, the person's track record, and of course, whether their suggestion is in accordance with the Bible.

There are barriers to Christians obeying God instantly. One practical obstacle is indebtedness. If you are a slave to debt, your freedom is reduced. Live on less than your income--live cautiously.

In IMMEDIATE OBEDIENCE, Pastor Rod Loy has sent a message to the Christian community--how about stop dragging your feet? This is an inspiring book, with a practical, heartfelt exhortation. At the end of each chapter, there are study questions to ponder. Additionally, there are suggestions for using IMMEDIATE OBEDIENCE in classes.

√ Excellent book with a challenging, provocative theme. Recommend!

Immediate Obedience
The Adventure of Tuning In To God
Rod Loy
Copyright 2014

Loy reminds us that every second is infused with possibilities because God can show up and do something miraculous at any given moment.  The author also points out that there are no amazing stories in the Bible that do not include immediate acts of obedience.

We are reminded to that God speaks to us something I think bares repeating.   Another reminder that bares repeating is that God's plan for us is greater than anything we could dream up.  We are reminded too that God needs to be our first priority in our lives and that the Bible is our guide book.  As we grow closer to God we will be able to see what direction the Lord is moving in our lives.

One line that really stuck out to me was this:  God often uses difficulties to get our attention and fertilize our growth.  We are also reminded that when we start actively listening to the voice of God when your tuning into God's frequency you are most likely to hear him.  We are reminded that disobedience can lead  us to many dangerous pitfalls. There is always a cost for obedience but we have the promise that God will reward us if we respond to him in obedience.

I would definely recommend this book be added to your library, because I believe  it is an important book on why obedience is important.

I give this book five out of five stars. ..

I got this book at least 6 years ago and should have read it then, but sometimes a book sits on a shelf and waits for the right time to be read.
I really liked this book. It was practical and if followed can lead to a life full of God moments. The author says early on that the biggest way God speaks is through his word (the Bible) and I was glad for the emphasis on that, but all of the examples he gave through out the book, both his and others, were not examples of this. I don't recall one example that was "I read this passage and this is how God spoke to me through it" or something similar.
I like that real examples from the author, his family, and others who have written to him were included both as good examples and some that were examples to learn from.
I love that the author put in 90 days of passages to read and reflect on at the end, with the questions and a time to practice listening and obeying God. I have yet to finish that section of the book, and I intend to start that tomorrow.

Obedience is ainspirational

Rod Loy does a great job illustrating and explaining his journey of learning to be immediately obedient. The anecdotes, letters, and testimonies were real, down-to-earth, and didn't seem hyperbolized. It is an inspirational read. I'm going to take the 99 Day Challenge.

I enjoyed the different testimonies included within this book. They reflect the real struggles and joys of obedience to God. The hindrances to obedience are presented in a straightforward fashion.

Rod Loy, Immediate Obedience: The Adventure of Tuning in to God (Springfield, MO: Influence Resources, 2014). Paperback / Kindle

My son is five years old. Much of my parenting of him at the moment involves teaching impulse control. I tell him, “Just because you feel like yelling—or making rude noses or smacking your foster sister on the back of the head—doesn’t mean you have to do it.”

It is generally understood that impulse control refers to the suppression of negative impulses. That is well and good, of course, but not all our impulses are negative. Should we also teach our children to restrain positive impulses? Shouldn’t we rather teach them to act on positive impulses? Indeed, shouldn’t we act on good impulses ourselves—to forgive, to help, to share God’s love?

In his book, Pastor Rod Loy encourages readers to practice immediate obedience, which is “the courage to act instantly on whatever [God] told [you] to do.” Such obedience assumes, of course, that God speaks to us, through Scripture preeminently but also through other means. It also assumes that we are listening, not allowing disobedience, distraction, or doubt to close our ears to God.

When we listen to God speak and immediately obey His voice, He leads us on an adventure of increasing faith, service, and blessing. When we don’t, we miss out on God’s blessing, allow disobedience to creep into other areas of our lives, and experience regret about how God could’ve used us…if only we’d been willing. Clearly, immediate obedience is the better option.

The concluding chapter of the book shares good advice about how to start developing the habit of immediate obedience: give God your heart above all else, make decisions today that will allow you to say “yes” to God tomorrow, avoid debt or eliminate it if you have it, hold possessions loosely, start small, and never say no.

The book includes discussion questions at the end of each chapter, making it ideal for use in small groups. It also includes “The 90-Day Challenge” with a Bible reading, prayer guide, and reflection questions. The goal of the challenge is to help you “ask God to make you sensitive to His voice, and then, to obey whatever He asks you to do.” I found this book spiritually encourage and very practical. I plan to take the 90-Day Challenge.

(Full Disclosure: I am a friend of Pastor Rod Loy, and I work for the Assemblies of God, which is the parent company of Influence Resources.)

I got this book for review from the publisher through NetGalley.
I really liked the voice of the author. I enjoyed the anecdotes he shared about the results of obeying god immediately. Honestly, as a low income family, I balked at his first story about giving someone 100.00 and the person going to vegas with it. I don't have that kind of money to give away, though as a pedestrian I'll often go to people on the corners and offer to buy them lunch at a nearby restaurant. I really wanted to know more about the 'how' of obeying god immediately, and how I could adjust it to my income, but the author took a long time to get to that point of the book.

I did like the questions at the end of each chapter. They help the reader to be 100% honest with themselves, and the 90-day challenge at the end helps you apply what you've written throughout the book. Overall, this book is recommended to people who want to do more with their spiritual lives and become closer to god, but may not know where to start or feel overwhelmed by how much more others are doing.

Immediate Obedience: The Adventure of Tuning in to God by Rod Loy is about becoming more sensitive to hearing God speaking to you and being obedient by listening and obeying his commands. I enjoyed reading the numerous stories that others have shared in this book of times they have heard God speaking to them and their encouraging outcomes. Yes some people will think you are nuts when you say God speaks to you. But what a wonderful blessing when he tells you do something and you follow through with it, giving him all the glory! At the end of each chapter are questions to give you something to thing about. There is a 90 day challenge at the end of the book to help you learn to open your spiritual ears to what God is trying to say to you. I will be taking the author's challenge over the next 90 days.

I received a free copy of this book from Assemblies of God and Net Gallery in exchange for my honest review rather it be good or bad. Thank you.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

In "Immediate Obedience", Loy gives you practical ways to learn how to listen to God's voice without hesitation when He speaks. He explained things very simply so that anyone, whether a new Christian or someone who has been a Christian for years can understand and apply it to their lives. I love that he used stories of his own life as well as stories of those in his church to give examples of how to obey immediately. I highly recommend this book!

This is an excellent book to read! It is very challenging to every believer in God. How often do you obey God? Do you ever hesitate to obey God? This will challenge you to obey God immediately every time. This is not a book to read quickly, but to apply what is being taught from scriptures. This book has questions for you to ask yourself at the end of each chapter and also has a 90 day challenge to hear and obey God.

A good challenge. Really, all Christians need to live this way. It seems it always boils down to us saying, "not my will, but yours".
