Shinjiro's baptism into a fire he is not even sure he wants to go through - fantastic art. Really has captured the essence of Ultraman while taking him and reinventing him into more modern and emerging technologies. Really liked UM as a small boy. Nice to be able to go back in time and visit him again; this looks like a great series!
World: The art is fantastic and the best reason to read this series, the sense of motion is insane. The world building here is also very light, with small steps to show a larger world and also the cloak and dagger of the SSIP.
Story: The story is very short and very basic, it’s Shinjiro accepting the role of Ultraman, that’s it. It’s fights that drive this series and it’s fun. The character development is basic, the emotions are on the surface. The introduction of Rena was very cliché and expected in this series. A cool alien fight nonetheless.
Characters: Very little development, just Shinjiro accepting the role of Ultraman and that’s all the arc we get. We also see the detective and Rena and the asshole of the SSIP and that’s about it. Still fight heavy as it should be.
Although we did get some more internal struggle from our main character Shinjiro and more world-building, I’m just not sold on a majority of these pages solely being action scenes. Feeling another 3 stars and seriously contemplating continuing with this series and might just catch the anime. 🤷🏽♂️
Slowly improving on the previous volume by introducing new characters who add variation to the story, but it still feels like a rehashing of so many things before it. The best thing it has going for it right now is mostly the suit design. Shinjiro is struggling with who and what he is, and it's a little frustrating because it feels like we linger on this for longer than is necessary. Sometimes the comedy elements fall a little flat, but despite all my gripes, I actually can't stop reading... I can't get enough of it... On to the next volume!
The hero's journey in the series had a very good start in volume 1, and in this volume, it starts to get more interesting as training begins and Shinichiro, the protagonist, manages to earn the trust of a few citizens while seeking to prove himself worthy of being his father Shin's Ultraman successor, although one of the villains calls him a fake Ultraman. Since the series is more than 10 volumes, expect more heroic trials, stakes, and villains to arrive as you read the entire series up to date. I myself look forward to reading what comes next.
Still really enjoyed the second book! The book had a new and entertaining version of the blinking red light from the old TV show. The art continues to impress as well, though sometimes some of the characters look like they are missing an eye because of the way that the artist depicts shadows or focus.
The characters are also still pretty empty but I just enjoy the manga for the quick fun and big explosions.
The book was really good and I think if your a person who likes manga and action this book would really be for you. Ultraman has left and it's been years since he has gone but now the extraterrestrials have made a move on human's like secret murders. Earth doesn't know of the extraterrestrials existence. Can the next Ultraman prevent that from happening? find out on Volume #2. You will want to read this.
Shinjiro is a student and one day meets a alien the tells him that Earth had made a alliance with other planets and Earth is in danger because Ultraman it's now old and they need a new one so he tells him "We want you to be Ultraman" Shinjiro was not sure about it but when people were in danger he said "I'm Ultraman!!!." He accept it and defeat the enemy.
Another fine volume in this series. While the previous volume was kind of an origin story, this one is about Shinjiro learning about responsability and what means to be an Ultraman. Again, good action and great pacing.
The frenetic pace continues in this second volume of the new ULTRAMAN manga. Shinjiro is learning what it truly means to be Ultraman and mysteries are cropping up. The art continues to be awesome and the story thrilling.
El traje del Alien está muy cool, en general es un manga que te atrapa al principio, sin embargo, no sé si vaya a leer los siguientes. Le doy 4 ⭐ por el arte y el trasfondo.
A much stronger follow up to the debut - stellar art is complimented this time with alien crime intrigue, darker tones and themes, and a wider sense of the universe they are building, or re-building - like a darker Men In Black meets alien Iron Man, to be reductive.
We see a lot of world building in this second volume. As well as a bit of mystery behind the true motivations of several characters. Still really enjoying it and will continue on.
This is great manga. So much action and a little drama so far. I love robot kind of manga, and this reminds me of Pluto a little. But so far so good. I do see myself buying the whole series.
This remains a fun bit of nostalgia for me. Unlike most manga this series is more of a traditional Western take on a super hero character, in this instance one of Japan's most famous Tokusatsu franchise characters.
Except, so far Shinjiro, this series Ultraman, isn't a giant. As the son of the Ultraman from the first television series he is being introduced to his legacy in his teen years. His father hid the fact from him that Shinjiro inherited some of Ultraman's powers, and the Science Patrol have given him a suit to enhance , and grant him him, some of father's abilities. This among the better takes I've seen on this story (and if you're interested in USA takes on the superhero legacy I do recommend DC Comics' Impulse for a very upbeat and enjoyable tale).
There are hints of a larger story lurking in the background, including, the amusing to me, fact that the Science Patrol have morphed into a sort of Men in Black in Japan (the movie version, and not the superior Malibu comics series).
From a fanboy standpoint I was amused and interested by the small author's not that this is a direct sequel/reboot of Ultraman from the first television serie and that the other television don't exist in this universe (a bit of shame as there was some loose continuity between the series), but and I don't consider this a spoiler....
The creators drop a hint that some aspects from later series mat appear.
Another tale of the Son of Hayata. This one does a little more world building than than the previous volume. We learn that Earth government aligned themselves with an interstellar organization that was helping keep aliens away from Earth for so long. We also find out that the the Zetton, named Edo, who's sort of the point mane on earth apparently has some sort of plan going on. We meet Moroboshi, I'm assuming it's Dan at this point, another member of the Science Patrol who does leads a strike/ investigation team and he's not too fond of the new Ultraman at this particular point. We also meet a cop who's investigating a series of murders that centers around a particular pop idol that he has a connection too. That for the moment seems to be the the current ongoing arc. There's another, more briskly paced one meaning they find the alien and send him in, one where Jiro is orderd to take him down.
So far it's a more interesting read than volume one. Still a pretty fast read though. But like I said they seem t be building up the world a little more now, and hopefully the pop idol story will take a while. but as a Ultraman fan I would suggest that you would check it out.
I read the first volume last winter so I was a bit out of the loop for this one. I can't decide if I like the pages of action without words or not. It's enjoyable art but I don't feel like the scale is great for the action shots, it's something that would be fine in a normal graphic novel but in a manga, even a larger than normal sized one, it's not quite right. Also the lack of color I think makes it a little harder to pick out what's going on. Personally I don't want to stare at the page, I want to see it, understand it, and move on since there's nothing to read on it. This is still very much the middle of a story, it has a different feel than a chapter a week kind of manga, it feels like everything was planned well in advance and they're taking their time spooling it out for us. I want to know the whole story now!
Shinjiro continues fighting petty criminals and likes the attention he gets so his reluctance to be Ultraman quickly dissipates. Then he's put to the ultimate test and sent to fight an alien. Lots of action in this volume! I loved the battle scenes. Lots of little things are going on with the plot as well: the reasons for the Ultraman scheme, the serial killer story, and Rena the pop star plays an important role. Everything is intriguing and as I said the action is great.
