On any given day, Chief Carrie Stewart has her hands full, between meth cooks, pot farmers, drunk and disorderly calls, and the ever-present day to day hassles of running an underfunded police department.
But when first livestock and then people start dying, it will take the help of a mysterious man and all her resources to discover the truth.
I can see where this might appeal to someone who wants to read a "scary" book, but not be scared. Or maybe to middle graders who are just cutting their teeth on horror, or monsters. I, personally, from ages ten to thirteen, was reading Carrie, Salem's 'Lot, true crime like Helter Skelter, cop novels like The Onion Field or The Choirboys. Then of course there was Rubyfruit Jungle and Fear of Flying...
But I digress.
This book. The characters were ok. The story lines were ok too. It just never picked up any momentum. Even when something happened that should have had the characters reduced to a fearful quivering mess, they were all "wow that was crazy... I need some coffee..." Even in the last few pages I held out hope. I'm thinking this could go one of several ways. Could the MC discover the "infection" had completely taken over her sleepy town? Could she herself have symptoms? Could her recent loss come back to... hunt her?
SURPRISE ENDING I often pride myself on guessing the outcome of a cop/spy story, but this time I was way off the mark. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, in one of my favourite genres, Though, I often say I am not a fan of sici-fi / fantasy, this was so down to earth I could believe in the unbelievable. The characters were well drawn and I particularly identified with Carrie. I particularly liked her dialogue and the way she neatly got people to do what she wanted with her excellent choice of words and approach. I enjoyed the exchanges between mother and daughter, often a well worn theme, but their relationship was refreshing and fun. This is the second book I’ve read from this author and I much prefer this one, but I shall be buying more in the future. A good book in which to lose yourself for a day.
This story was well worth reading. It started off interesting and only got better. A small town under seized by something that goes bump in the night. Great details and descriptions of small town life. I loved the characters and how the sheriff was well liked.
I started looking in the werewolf horror books and this one stood out. I was drawn in from the first page by the author's ability to make everything seem as if I was there. This one has it all...a love story, lots of small town drama, and lots of suspense and horror. I could not put it down! I only hope there are more books like this one out there!
What a well written and thoroughly enjoyable book. It excels in believable dialog and scenes. Quite wonderful to find a treasure like this and would love a follow up book featuring the same characters.
I was surprised by how much I really enjoyed reading this book. Sometimes they can be too silly and written just like any monster movie you've ever watched. Had a surprise ending and not a familiar plot.
This is another book that surprised me with how much I liked it. I pretty much listened to it as much as I could and didn't want to take out my headphones. This focuses on Carrie Stewart, who is Chief of a small town, where her usual problems include "meth cooks, pot farmers, drunk and disorderly calls, and the ever-present day to day hassles of running an underfunded police department." But when some live stock turn up with their innards missing and all that are left at the scene are incredibly big wolf tracks, it will take the help of a stranger to unravel the mysteries and catch the killer before it's too late.
I really liked the Chief. She is a no nonsense, strong and caring police officer. She loves the little town and is willing to do, and believe, anything to help it. I liked that, along with the wold mystery, there are also other issues being dealt with, like a lecherous mayor!! She was well written and developed and I was rooting for her throughout the book.
The plot was entertaining, though I would have liked a little more on the origin of the outbreak! It was fairly fast paced and kept my attention throughout too. I do have to say that I had an idea of who the culprit was about 3 quarters of the way through, though it didn't detract from the story.
In all. An engaging and entertaining read. It mightn't be the scariest but that didn't bother me. I like these kinda ones, where there's more story and mystery, rather than just blood and guts. I would like to see more from these characters and can only hope we see a book 2.
Michelle Marie did a good job. She read the story well and had a clear crisp voice. I did find some of her tones to be nearly the same, especially the females, but overall she did good.
I was voluntarily provided this free copy by the author, narrator, or publisher. This in no way affected nor influenced my thoughts.
