Elliot Beck may not have been blessed with mad art skills, a crooner's voice, or a godlike physique, but he makes up for it with an abundance of quick-witted sarcasm, massive insecurities, and a love of bad boys.

After his best friend Trevor finds him naked and tied to his bed—abandoned by his latest troublemaker—Trevor convinces him to take a chance on a nice guy. When he has an awkward encounter in the men's restroom with a fitness instructor named Chase, he never suspects the Adonis might be his perfect bad boy.

I write about painfully awkward, usually embarrassing, romance because long confident gazes followed by sexy dancing NEVER happens to me.

I am a native of the Pacific Northwest, and will probably never leave. I'm like a hypochondriac sundae, with claustrophobic sprinkles, and a big cherry of anxiety on top, so I don't travel much. I read to relax my mind, so I love getting lost in someone else’s story, even if it is only for a little while.

Slow beginning and a crash-and-burn ending don't make for the best story, and neither does a whiny, bitchy narrator.

Elliott is single, a few pounds overweight, and cranky. His sole purpose in life, it seems, is bitching about his greasy, creepy coworker Stan. His best friend Trevor despairs of E ever finding a boyfriend, so he sets up a meeting between E and Chase, a fitness instructor from Trevor's gym.

E doesn't feel he's good enough for hot, buff Chase. Cue incessant complaining and poor-me-I'm-so-fat-but-I-hate-working-out diatriabes.

But Chase likes E! God knows why, because E is lazy, negative, and pitiful.

Not much happened in the story. E's snarky first-person present-tense POV made my head hurt. There was a twist at the end related to Chase that came out of nowhere and made not a lick of sense.

There was ZERO chemistry between the MCs and no steam at all (one anti-climatic kiss). There were no editing issues or errors, but the story felt flat and rushed, with no emotional resonance.

Mood.
Sometimes you have to be in the right mood, or craving something in particular. This is a total mood book. It’s not a fabulous book or even a really good book.
I’ll come clean and tell you it’s not the greatest writing I’ve ever read, but oh my shit!
This book is funny. I mean, avoid drinking or eating while reading, it could be dangerous. I may have slipped a few lady-like snorts here and there. It’s that stupid-funny that you can’t help but be amused at the ridiculousness of it.
And frankly, sometimes that’s exactly what you need.

Elliot, or ‘E’, is looking for love….in all the wrong places. He’s got some issues. He complains a lot, he has little to no self-esteem, and he’s flippin’ hilarious.
His best friend attempts to set him up on a date with a ‘nice’ guy. E is clueless to this, and accidentally checks out his surprise blind date’s package in the men’s room. Awkward!

He agrees to go the gym where his new ‘friend’ works as a personal trainer. Gorgeous, funny, and sculpted to perfection, Chase is not the dream man E has been hunting for. He wants to snag himself a ‘bad boy’. There is nothing bad about Chase. Mmmm, Chase is very very good.

Both visits to the gym left me in hysterics. I especially loved the hot yoga scene. I love hot yoga; it’s one of my most favorite things in the world. And his experience cracked me up.

Every time they get physical, Chase pulls away. E thinks it’s because he’s sporting a muffin top and he’s very self conscious about his body. Chase swears he wants him, but needs to take things slow. Chase is keeping something from Elliot. You’ll never guess what.

The plot is extremely far-fetched.
A fair amount of bitching does occur.
The ending was absolutely absurd.
But good gracious, I haven’t laughed that hard while reading in a long time.

Don’t expect a lot….except giggles.

This book was an up and down rollercoaster ride!

I went through so many emotions in such few pages while reading Meet Cute and I absolutely loved it. After reading my first book by C.C. Dado (Say It With Ink, which I loved), I immediately pursued this book. The blurb had me hooked, and the cover, oh boy.

Meeting your future hubby in the bathroom, at the urinals, no less? Yeah, give me that book! I knew this book was probably going to have me laughing, but I really had no idea how much I was going to love it. Chase was a wonderful, perfect human being, the main conflict was well written and perfect for this short-ish story, and then there was Elliot.

Ah, Elliot. He was such a dork and so completely caught up in his need to be with a “bad boy” that he was brushing Chase off left and right. I’m actually surprised he didn’t just walk away altogether. He liked Chase, but he didn’t like his job or his suburban minivan feel.

Chase was a very unexpected surprise. Not going to spoil it for you, you’re just going to have to read it for yourself. But I will say that I loved his character from the beginning and every flip of the page just made me love him more.

This book is absolutely 100% worth the read! I’ll be keeping my eye (eyes?) on C.C. Dado and future releases. Highly recommended!

This was actually a really cute story. I liked Elliot. Yes he was negative and snarky, but I thought he was hilarious. Laugh out loud funny. I even understood his reaction to meeting Kelly. What happened after that (around 80% or so) seemed a bit over the top and out of place in this story. Well written. Would like to see more from this author :)

SCREAMING!
The potential was there. It really was.
Elliot is not a great narrator. Kinda hated him often. Just the things he thought and said were not good. Not here for it. Hated how the body image issues were put in the story. Could have layered in better completely. Especially for how Elliot blows up because of them later on. Like I love when things like that are included in a story but this was too much. That whole scene of the first date at the restaurant was too much.
hated the Ex-boyfriend Kelly. Unnecessary on so many levels.
Just I liked the general plot outline even with all this until the big twist happens and it's like yeah nope. Now I'm really done. I wanted to like this so bad but I did not.

But the Miss Congeniality reference killed me though. Like that was Funny. I'll give you that.

This is cute and fun and fast. I do with characters carrying more weight than your average romantic lead didn't suffer from self esteem issues (or at least not more than any other character in the book).

This is very funny in its wit and situations but not well developed. I had a good time anyway.

This book is funny. I found myself laughing and and smiling at Elliot's snarky, cranky narration. Elliot is awkward and insecure on a good day and when his friend sets him up with hot, gym trainer Chase, his insecurities go into overdrive, especially when Chase refuses to do more than give him a kiss after a few dates.

While I enjoyed the story, I felt like in the end was a bit rushed, with a twist that came out of nowhere, but if you want a quick read with plenty of laughs and no sex this one fits the bill.

This was an afternoon delight!

I loved Elliot's voice narrating the insecurities of a non-model-like gay man dating a demi-god, and I loved how we are surprised at the end.

I also loved the secondary characters: Claire and husband Trevor, Elliot's best friend, the kind everyone should have at least one of; Trevor's parents, who provide some of the funniest moments in this short story; and the Irish-American waitress with the put-upon brogue to enhance her tips.

(I found this at Dreamspinner Press's website, not Amazon.)

To be honest, this one reminded me quite a bit of Tell Me It's Real…except with more guns and fewer homophobic parrots.

Ok, the plot isn’t the same, but Elliot Beck sure does bring Paul Auster to mind. He is not a skinny twink or a musclebound gymrat. He is an accountant who enjoys a good meal, and honestly doesn’t feel all that bad about it. Except when on dates with incredibly hot and fit gym trainers. Elliot doesn’t have all the self-confidence in the world, but he has a best friend to look out for him and to push him into incredibly awkward situations for his own good. Like when Elliot totally and accidently may have given the impression that the guy next to him in the bathroom had a laugh-worthy dick (when really it was just the fact that he was giving faux-Jesus a golden shower in the urinal next to Elliot)…only to find out that Chase–whose dick is sooooo not laugh worthy–is actually at the bar to be set up with Elliot by Elliot’s best friend. Awkward.

Anyways, Elliot doesn’t really believe that Chase could want him…so he is more than a little confused as to how he got talked into hot-yoga with the dude. Not that staring at Chase, all hot and bendy is much of hardship. But the more he sees of Chase the more he doesn’t understand why the guy could ever choose him. And it doesn’t help that the dude won’t do anything more than kiss him.

This was actually a lot of fun. Elliot was great, and he is my favorite type of character. Not some perfect little gay boy, but a real guy who likes men-–bad-boys, to be exact. Which gets him into more trouble than it is worth, really. But normal Chase isn’t a bad-boy (or is he?) and Elliot finds that stepping out of his comfort zone, while sometimes painful (like a exercise machine to the face) can be rewarding.

The twist at the end of the story…was interesting. Didn’t really see it coming, but I guess it makes sense in hindsight. And really, I do love twists like that. I might have to avoid bacon for a bit though…and that is a travesty of the highest order (if, you know, I could actually afford bacon at the moment).

I did find Elliot’s little hissy fit near the end to be a bit annoying. Seriously who takes the word of some sleazeball over the word of the guy they are dating…and maybe love? Elliot didn’t even give Chance a chance to explain, he just stormed off in high dudgeon and acted like a bit of an ass, to be honest.

That aside, this was a fun short story, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. Though now I have the craving to go read Tell Me It’s Real all over again, even if I listened to the audiobook like three weeks ago. Oh, well, it is not like that is a hardship, really.

This novella focuses on Elliot, a bit chubby, a bit nerdy and always going after the wrong bad boy. Told first person from his point of view, he’s sort of whiny but he’s also pretty snark-funny. He has the greatest best friend named Trevor, who happens to be the one who has to bail him out of bad situations with those bad boys. Such as being left bare ass naked tied up to his own bed. Even Elliot is sort of surprised he and Trevor as so close, since “I’m pretty sure there is not a nicer person alive than my best friend, which is weird since I’m kind of a dick…” See, I love that Elliot knows that!
Trevor wants Elliot to take a chance on a nice guy and forget all the bad boy crap. He never wants a repeat of having to untie naked Elliot. To this end, he introduces Elliot to Chase, a personal trainer from Trevor’s gym. Chase is a beautiful Adonis with bad boy muscles who is, dare we say it? Nice. They have the most awkward introduction ever, due to Elliot’s way active imagination. Who else would see Jesus in a pink urinal cake?
Since Chase is a trainer he gives Elliot ten free lessons. This is the torture Elliot puts up with in order to get to know Chase. Chase is that nice guy and they go very slow. “We’re dating?”, I asked, sounding like captain of the moron pirates.” There is just something about Elliot’s voice that made me laugh over and over. Is he snarky and bitchy? You bet. Is he whiny, particularly about Stan the coworker? Absolutely. Is it damn funny? Yes! “…trying to give him a semiflirty smile I’m pretty sure just came across as douche.”
I laughed at Elliot’s attempts to “girl-punch his suitors”, even though I felt that was Elliot all over, jealous and impulsive. Elliot’s penchant for bad boys is fulfilled with Chase, although for different reasons than normal. Chase is an enigma at times and his part in the story was a little confusing (because Trevor introduced them, so had Chase asked him to?).
I admit, I did want Elliot to quit harping about Stan. We get it, Stan is obnoxious and gross! I loved Elliot’s take on things and I adored Trevor. His running the gauntlet of Mrs Baker in order to get to Elliot’s apartment shows what a true friend is. Mrs Baker herself is an exhibitionist who bakes penis cookies. Come on!!
This is a fun novella where you have to suspend belief a little bit but it was well worth the read. And some of it, I read twice because the phrasing just made me laugh.

A Joyfully Jay review.

Urban Dictionary (because they’re one of my favorite sources—don’t judge) defines meet-cute as a “scenario in which two individuals are brought together in some unlikely, zany, destined-to-fall-in-love-and-be-together-forever sort of way (the more unusual, the better).” Well, this story definitely matches that definition. Meet-cute is the story of two guys meeting in a most embarrassing situation and the ensuing courtship that follows. I’ve got to tell you, the first part of this book, the courtship, is so good. It’s funny and cute and completely and totally adorable. Let me tell you about the meeting. The bathroom scene? Hysterical. I literally laughed out loud and then did so again when Trevor actually introduced them. Then when Elliot goes to the gym to work out with Chase and the events that seem to push them apart that actually draw them together? So funny. Seriously laugh out loud funny.

Elliot Beck is the brightest star of this story. Slightly pudgy, insecure, awkward, klutzy, and highly bitchy, Elliot is a number of people I know all wrapped into one. And I fucking love him. Elliot’s the kind of guy who speaks his mind and I thought in the beginning it was to cover up for his insecurities, but no. He’s just that guy. He doesn’t have much of a filter. The guy is a laugh a minute. Okay, I get that he wouldn’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but he’s totally mine.

So yes, the first say, 65-75% of the book, I really liked and because of that I huge hopes for the rest, but I’m not sure what happened here. Okay, I take that back, I totally get what the author was trying to do, Dado just didn’t take the time to do it. The conflict is good and I like the build up to that point, but then the author throws a freaking curve ball into the mix and I’m all, “Wait. What?” Here’s the thing. I like curve balls. Curve balls are good. They keep stories alive, but they actually have to add to the story and like I said, this one came out of nowhere and then the book is over. The. End.

Elliot, “E”, is an accountant. Nerdy, pudgy, and ridiculously attracted to bad boys. He loves his job, but hates his co-worker with his porcine smell. One day his best friend hooks him up with Chase, a personal fitness trainer.

Chase is everything E isn’t and E has a hard time believing Chase is really interested in him. This is especially true when every time the two get close to doing more than kissing, Chase puts on the brakes.

It turns out there’s a good explanation for that, as Chase is more than meets the eye. The two end up with a HEA and E ends up with a new co-worker, minus the bacon smell.

I really, really liked this book. My only complaint was it’s length. There was a so much potential, areas where we could have focused on E’s insecurities or taken time to draw out the plot with the stinky co-worker, but instead everything moves at break neck speed.

We don’t get a terrific sense for the relationship between E and Chase and as a result it never felt as authentic as it could have.

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed reading it very much. But I was disappointed in the ending – it was happy- but unsatisfying and vaguely rushed.

I’d still recommend it, it’s a quick read, funny and light story, but I wish there was more.

I give it 4 of 5 hearts.

This is a short, sweet novella. I loved the main character Elliot, he was awkward and nerdy and just incredibly sweet. I was suspicious of Chase from the first time I met him so I guess I wasn’t able to bond with him like I did Elliot but they were still both great characters. I think it would have been interesting and helped me understand him more to at least have an epilogue written from Chase’s point of view and get his reactions to his relationship with Elliot.

The plot while short did not seem rushed at all. It was a fast-paced and drama filled read with plenty of comedy to lighten things up. Overall this is a fun, short read to just relax before bed or indulge in over the weekend!

As the star says, it was okay. Eliot tries to be one of those snarky, witty narrators, but his jokes too often fall flat. And I'm afraid I agreed too much with him and his reasons why Chase wouldn't be with him, it made Chase seem crazy.

Some Favorite Quotes:
What? No jogging.... No jogging....
"You're doing great," he said as I started what he called a light jog but what was in reality the fastest I had ever run without thinking someone was chasing me.

A quick read, a little odd. Some of the humor works and some of it really doesn't, but I can honestly say it didn't feel (imo, obvs - this would be the height of YMMV) like the author was trying too hard with the jokey jokes and that's a welcome relief. The story turned very sharply and ended abruptly (with a quick epilogue) and, well, things could have been paced better. Definitely.

I am, as stated in earlier reviews, not a fan of the illustrated underwear covers. They are hokey as hell, but this almost works. However, that butt looks misshapen. I guess the nice thing about ebooks is you don't have to be looking at mutant ass cheeks every time you set down or pick up your book.

Elliot is far from perfect. But his inner dialogue was hilarious. I enjoyed his sarcasm and view of things. Honestly, he is someone I could relate to. From the first meeting with Chase to the very end I was entertained by Elliot.
The writing was fast paced and the story moved along at a good clip.

Although here were a few things that made me think and question at the end, they did not distract from the story. This was a good short. I do so love when the not so perfect guy gets his perfect man.

A witty, very often true to life account of the awkwardness we all feel inside our own head. C.C. Dado sums up our inner struggles very well even in a short novella. I can't wait to see what she comes up with next!

OK so this has nothing to do with the book, which I liked BTW, but I was wondering do many 'Irish' pubs in America offer Bangers and Mash on their menu's? Because that's a British dish just saying!!!!

I liked Elliot, finding his self-deprecating world view and insecurities to be endearing. It's one of those where the character's snarky attitude will either be very entertaining or annoying and, fortunately for me, I enjoyed the trip through Elliot's point of view.

This was a so-so story. It had a very promising beginning and I even liked the narrator, even though he wasn't very likeable.

The rushed ending and out-of-nowhere crime plot lowered my rating.
